  • A new dual camera video recorded during a nightshift. Allot of people ask me questions about these videos.
    I suggest you post the timestamp in the comments with your question, and i will put it in the description :)
    Some info i can not put online due to privacy regulations.
    For example the communication between the pilot and the tug or other communications are not allowed to be posted.
    This tug has 5500 horsepower and has Voith Schneider Propulsion.

    Thank you for including the engine startup.

    Your skill is to be applauded. Much more than required to operate a hydrostatic snow grooming cat. Fixed RPM with line pressure controlling speed of track drives, while operating front and rear implements. Your skill of insight and anticipation, for complete control, can only be learned by what we call "mileage" (hours). The difference is also obvious that in your operation, mistakes have more dire consequences. I groomed snow for ten years at a west USA resort. Your vids are mesmerizing.

      Hey, Thanks for the compliments. Yeah indeed,you need some mileage in order to get used to all the controls and movements of the tugs. Do you have some videos of the grooming? I would like to see that to be honest. I checked your profile, but haven't found any videos. Greetings

    Thank you for posting these. I have been fascinated with tugs for decades. This is the first time I've been able to get a close up look at what it's like to be aboard a tug during ship handling operations. Two questions ...
    [a] what is being controlled by the two rows of buttons (left side inset) that light up when pressed?
    [b] what's the button you press under the wheel doing? You reach through the wheel (which seems an odd place to put such a button - isnt that a safety issue?) you press this button that turns on something.

    • @ShippingHarbors
      @ShippingHarbors  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      The buttons are to lower/raise the rpm of the engines. And that other button is the communication between pilot on the ship and tug.

    Is that port side engine control limiting? Looks like that red light indicates overload...not quite familiar with Voith...

    Excellent vid! Many thanks! The picture-in-picture is a nice touch. How about next time setting up a camera to look at your GPS/plotter screen? Just a thought! Oh and I can't get enough of the engine startup sound, brings back so many memories of my fathers tug (Niigata 6cyl diesels).

    • @ShippingHarbors

      +Helidan The camera that films the steering also has the GPS covered, but it's difficult to read i think. But i can try to add the gps next time. The recordings are allready made, but i still need to produce it. It will be online within a few days normally. The ship in the next movie is the "Maersk Idaho"

    • @ShippingHarbors

      +Helidan I just checked the recordings, and the gps is not readable (is that correct english? haha) due to reflecting sunlight :(

    It won’t be too long before they figure out how to replace the deck crew, so it will simply be skipper + engineer only and the training via simulator. It wasn’t so long ago that there were 5-6 man crews and progress was straight forward for a youngster starting at the bottom. This is a different kind of ‘progression’. That starboard motor is kind of smokey!

    Hello, Love the dual Camera view! very interesting to see in realtime what you are doing with the controls. i was wondering if you could explain what it is that they do exactly i understand basically what they do but i was hoping to have a better understanding of what they do. i am hoping to be a Tugboat captain some day. Again thank you for your videos hope to see more dual cam views

    Hi, First, love your video, highly educational, second: at 6:53 you position yourself waiting for a bagatelle to go by and I'm wondering is that a LOCK they are coming out of? and Third, why is it you seem to be at the stern of ships most of the time (curiosity on my part?) , ~Again, thanks for sharing your video, and your willingness in answering question, it is fantastique. Pierre, Calgary, Alberta Canada. We re in the snow........ and my friend is in TONGEREN where I was stationed for 2 years 1968=thru 1970. Bye for now.

    • @ShippingHarbors
      @ShippingHarbors  8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hello, yes this is a lock they are coming out from. We also connect to the bow of the ship from time to time, but that is not so interesting to watch as the stern I think.

    • @j.pierremalette4482
      @j.pierremalette4482 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +ShippingHarbors Thank so much for answering. Would it be possible to see a video of the ship in the lock being raised, lock gate opening and onward from there? I use to go to lock in Maastricht at the Maas and Albert Canal near Eben-Emael fortress in 1970-1972 watching the bagatelle being raised and lowered and the long convoy of barge coming in on the Albert Canal going to a steel mill further on. I'm still fascinating by these boat.

    I like the warning at 19:00. I take it that it's telling you you're pulling too much power from the engines?

    What is the red light showing on the propeller quadrant?

    • @ShippingHarbors
      @ShippingHarbors  8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      That is the 'engine overload' pre-warning. It's not overloading yet, but if you keep pushing it harder it will go into overload and the rpm will drop.

    Does the steering invert when you face backwards or do you just steer oposite.

    • @elliotcapson3101

    Prefer to work backwards Or, the design of those exhaust pipes seems like an engineer had some bad luck when he was thinking ;-)

    • @Tjita1
      @Tjita1 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It never goes fast enough for it to matter. I had the same reaction when I bought my lawnmower with the exhaust pointing forward, until I realised the thing never goes faster than like 7 km/h..

  • @dizneym1
    @dizneym1 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Do the throttle looking controls move the pitch of the props?

    • @sjem618
      @sjem618 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Matthew db It is more complicated than that, this is Voith Schneider Propeller (or VSP short), look it up on the internet. ;)
      With normal propellers it would be impossible to manoeuver like this.

    • @dizneym1
      @dizneym1 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +sjem618 I understand the system but the controls seem out of date and difficult to grasp where a joystick would be appropriate, seems like a lot of wasted energy too, a lot of the power goes to rotating mass, ? Cutting through the water. this job looks like it will be replaced by a drone tug in the future, go the way of the fighter pilot. Don't mean to be negative I actually would like this job in another life

    • @ShippingHarbors
      @ShippingHarbors  8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +Matthew db these controls are also available in electronic controls, but the ones in the video are fully mechanical not depending on any electronics. This way they will always work, even with a blackout thruout the tug.

    • @Sam-W
      @Sam-W 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +Matthew db You are right about the efficiency, it is lower compared to a regular propeller. But keep in mind that a propeller also is a lot of mass turning through water. In my mind VSP is the best system that a tug can be fitted with to do jobs like this. Manoeuverability is as or even more important than power for a tug like this.

  • @WhiteGangster400
    @WhiteGangster400 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @ShippingHarbors
      @ShippingHarbors  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +WhiteGangster400 Yep, the pilot and the tugs are on a dedicated channel to communicate with eachother.
