    This is not what i have in mind. When you said single core i thought you would use pentium 4 or other processor with a real single core design.

    • @relentlessaf4361
      @relentlessaf4361 8 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      The problem with that is the performance would be pretty obvious. Terrible, so the point of the video was using a more powerful core to show what would happen since it could handle a greater load of things which is what newer programs are designed for.

    it looks like the games arent optimized for singe core. There is no way 1 core of modern CPU will give you 1 fps, its unrealistic, the games are just "broken" in this sense and not intended to play this way

    • @GregSalazar
      @GregSalazar  8 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      There "is a way," and I just proved it right here. The games aren't broken. They just can't force that much compute data down a single lane. You'll see in Part 2 that hyperthreading makes a HUGE difference.

    • @tylerweigand8875
      @tylerweigand8875 8 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      +Science Studio I'd imagine that in a well optimized game running it on a single core would be at worst 1/8th the fps of a 6700k. I'd imagine something else is going on behind the scenes in ashes that is giving you 0.1 fps.

    For anyone wondering, what happened is that the CPU he plugged in was so slow, it had to send out an emergency message to the rest of the computer parts to slow down, and they complied to protect the CPU from melting from being overworked. This is what you probably know as "bottle-necking". On top of that, the CPU only does complex mathematics and instructions very slowly, and with that old CPU, it could only do so much, after the fact.

    • @streaky81
      @streaky81 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Sucks to be wrong, there's no such thing as an emergency message to slow down. There's a scheduler in the OS but that's it. I'd say it's mostly down to scheduling and bus bandwidth.

    • @DanZhukovin
      @DanZhukovin 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      streaky08 What do you think made the schedule? The ram? No. That kind of thing is an executive order, and that is something the CPU does.

    • @streaky81
      @streaky81 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Scheduling is the job of the OS kernel not the cpu itself. Just to add to this - a modern os with a modern scheduler, if you throw a single core at it you'll get interrupts for days due to schedulers prioritising short running tasks and it will perform like *ass* relative to the overall potential of that core if all things were equal. A fairer test would be to set affinity of the software to one core then the scheduler wouldn't interfere with the game's process.

      3)Left 4 Dead 2 40-60 fps no problems
      4)SCP 27-38 fps
      5)Minecraft (lag spikes) (1fps - 16fps) (lowest setting) but after a few minutes it optimized well and run 60-80 fps high setting (12 chunk + fancy setting )(Optifine) but when I run my 100 mods it surprising me I get 20-35 fps but eventually it crash. @ThEMarD 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Heyyo, well it has a much weaker single core performance due to lower instructions per clock, so I would imagine an AMD FX processor could be anywhere from 25% to 50% slower... This test that Greg did was more or less out of curiosity since he's not using an actual single core processor from 2005 or earlier heh. :P
      But yeah, nowadays from Intel the smallest core count available is two and from AMD it's two in APUs... so definitely two cores is the bare minimum these days for most modern games.
      Total War: Warhammer is an anomaly since the series has been historically very single-core based and not multithreaded properly (as my experiences with Total War: Shogun 2 have also pointed out to me as well) so that could be why it works mostly fine on a single core CPU as it was only with Total War: Warhammer that the Creative Assembly game devs wanted to make the game engine better with multithreaded CPUs.

      Yes, it really does. None of the other 3 cores on the die are active, meaning they can in no way contribute to the processing power of the CPU itself. This is the closest you will find to represent a "modern" single core CPU. The most recent "true" single-core CPU that I can recall was an Athlon 2.8Ghz solution back in the Phenom days.

    You do not need to disable the cores and hyperthreading on your bios! You can simply do it within the task manager, by setting the cpu affinity only to one core (hyperthread is seen as a separate core).

    Games needs at least 2 cores on Intel, or 1 core + 1 threat.
    Intel manages games by dropping GFX driver process in 1 core and physics in the other core. Even tho games doesn't seems to use "physics", every single graphic that produces movement on screen requires a process which Intel renders it as a single physic.
    That's why when you enable Intel HD graphics one core it's at its max helping its own AGP.
    And you might say (I disable my integrated graphics!) well was disabled as a display port but Intel HD will be always enabled, helping game physics and rendering.
    As faster your Intel HD +faster RAM+ faster clocks = faster render = faster CPU physics.
    Remember: Intel HD bases on RAM bandwidth as video ram, faster ram better the framerates. (CPU physics)
    You can test this by removing one of your dual channel ram and running a 3DMark11 bench.
    If you remove one channel ram you're practically taking off 50% of your video bandwidth on the Intel HD. The result will hit physic score.

    What about a single core with Hyperthreading?

    • @fobusas
      @fobusas 8 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      He did another video with hyperthreading on. And that's the problem. Single cores of old had all kinds of tricks to parallelise incoming data. Turning of all but one and then hyperthreading off makes this a worthless benchmark, because even single core NetBurst had hyperthreading....

    • @SianaGearz
      @SianaGearz 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well not all NetBurtst were hyperthreaded, only starting specific Northwood versions. Williamette didn't have hyperthreading. OK, Williamette was also a broken piece of shit, which was hit by float denorm bug the hardest of them, but all NetBurst inherited some denorm performance issues.
      Back in that era, games were single-threaded and a non-hyperthreaded AMD Athlon singlecore was a genuinely better choice.
      The instruction decoder and opcode scheduler design which does pretty well extracting parallelism from a single thread goes back to Pentium Pro, and was already quite impressive in late Pentium 3 versions, being able to decode and schedule 2 opcodes per cycle a significant portion of the time. However, modern schedulers which are not derived from NetBurst essentially inherit and enhance these properties. So using a modern CPU is not a limitation. It's just that games are developed exclusively for multithreaded systems at least since Xbox360 and wide availability of multithreaded PCs, with Core2 Duo and Athlon 64x2 being common PC CPU target requirements since 2007 till not too long ago.

    • @GoldenSun3DS
      @GoldenSun3DS 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ignafiltro Sanchez It doesn't work like that. You won't get more performance pairing a weaker GPU with a weaker CPU instead of a stronger GPU.
      Think about it like this:
      I can run 2mph, but my friend can run 5mph. We have to stay together, so he has to run at 2mph.
      If I instead run with my friend that can run at 2mph, we'll still be only running at 2mph.
      As long as my friend can run faster than me, it doesn't matter whether he's slightly faster or hugely faster than me. You are only as strong as your weakest link.
      Of course, this is overly simplified. If your CPU is much weaker than your GPU, you can always turn up settings that only impact GPU performance, like AA and resolution and still get the same performance.
      Also, I should point out that this is completely unrealistic testing. If you're getting crappy performance, you don't keep max settings and then say it's unplayable.

    I think the issue is not so much that it's a single core, as much as it is the games are designed with multi core in mind since we've had several generations of those, and shit the bed when they don't have other cores to send instructions to. They assume multicore and die in various ways. It used to be that some programs and games, although not many, would have a multicore checkbox to take advantage of extra cores, because the way they needed to be designed to take advantage of that isn't the same as if it just assumed single core operations.

    Team Fortress 2 and CS:GO ran at cinematic 24 frames per second, most of the games from my Steam library didn't even bother launching, but somehow Xonotic could maintain a solid 60fps with Normal graphics settings (still, it had some strange micro stutters).

      Michael Brown Yes.. Yes, it does. The other cores existing doesn't change the fact that by disabling them, it is effectively a 1 core CPU.
      However, his testing was completely unrealistic. You don't try max settings on a low end system and then claim gaming on it is impossible.

  • @logicalfundy
    @logicalfundy 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    It actually makes a lot more sense than you realize. You see, when everything is bottlenecked down to a single core, you now have everything fighting for CPU time. Some games may handle this better than others.
    Games with a traditional loading mechanism and a traditional game loop won't be as affected as much, because more traditional stuff works well on a single core, because at one time that was all we had.
    However, games that use a less traditional loading mechanism that is designed for multi-core machines will have problems. Streaming resources in with separate threads is something I believe some newer games do, and what I believe you are seeing with the first demo is assets not loading in properly because it is trying to stream assets in on a different thread, and that thread is not getting the CPU time it needs because it is competing with the other parts of the game. You may notice that things are still loading in, just very slowly.
    Things should get a lot better once you switch to dual cores, because then you will have far less problems with resource locks due to everything having to share a single CPU.

  • @GIJew

    A single powerful core always beats several low power cores (at least when it comes to server hosting).
    I used to host a gmod server that would host at least 80 people on at most times. I was always thinking that because I had an 8 core Xeon that it would be the best option.
    Most game servers (like Source engine) only use one core. So all that power is being wasted on running 7 other cores that do nothing. I disabled all those cores and holy crap. I used to only be able to run at 18 tick tops. I was able to hit 36 tick without any drop in performance.

  • @stylesoftware

    gaming on single core was a thing back in the 90s all the way to 2006 or 7. after 2008 almost all games required dual core.

    I think it would be interesting if the top of the line was a single core again, with like 4 threads. something with like 300%+ ipc, takes up the whole die size, and has an increased version of hyper threading.

    the main problem is with modern game engines. Modern engines are using a dedicated rendering thread, which takes all commands for DX/OpenGL and execute it. This makes stuff easier and faster, because no one uses a single core CPU today. I think that was actually the case of GTA V, but you will have to ask the costumer service.
    I read a blog about the rendering pipeline in GTA V and the guy confirmed, that GTA V is using a dedicated thread for rendering.
    I am by myself a graphic programmer, my engine uses also a dedicated rendering thread.

    What strikes me the most about the GTA benchmark is the fact the even the physics couldn't keep up!

    Tried this on an xps 15 with i5 6300hq 960m playing GTA 5 on high at 900p and I got 15 fps whereas normally it would never drop below 60 but the environment rendered fine

    Dual core with Hiperthread vs without Hiperthread vs sigle core with hiperthread

    Wow. This just educated me about how little people know what "cores" are or what they do.

  • @toddabbott781

    The games might detect the CPU and expect the cores to all be turned on. It could also be that things like bus and such are split between the cores, so disabling the cores instead of using a single core CPU might be causing you a lot of trouble. So if you want to run this just use a single core processor.

    can I just point out to you that it didn't physically "break"; that's in reference to the first bench test you did in GTA 5. What actually happened was that it was working but that the map couldn't physically render because you were only using 1 core. Basically because of the speed at which the ram is sending data to the CPU, the CPU basically doesn't have enough resources to fully render the map in said amount of time. In other words your processor was at that time, "unable to import the necessary data fast enough for it to look realistic".

    @1:00 What gets me is how people hold their phone horizontally like this! It does not matter, the phone wont stop working because you are holding it at some strange angle while on speaker phone (or voice recording in this case)! lol
