As an Asian, it's fascinating to see the amount of people in the comments thinking taking off shoes while going inside the house is absurd and even stupid. For us Asians, it's almost instinctual removing shoes, ESPECIALLY if you're in somebody else's home. If you do this in an Asian household, it's not only unsanitary, but really disrespectful. It's basically bringing outside dirt into someone's home that they cleaned.

The Health Department requires shoes to be worn in restaurants and forbids bare feet at public pools. Amtrak requires shoes at all times moving through the train. Do what you think is safe and best for you, and respect your host’s wishes. It isn’t necessary to have a national policy. As far as I’m concerned it makes no difference if I’m picking up germs from the floor that came from other dogs or peoples bare feet, shoes, or fleas and cookie crumbs. It’s easier to wash my feet than my shoes, and easier, still, to keep my feet inside clean socks and shoes. Face it: gravity attracts all kinds of stuff to the floor. Outdoors this gets sanitized by sunlight, but in an indoor moist environment stuff lingers.
