I once had hyponatremia and it was TERRIBLE. Any sudden light that hits my eyes or any sudden movement from my head will make me extremely dizzy and see stars. It was not fun
I remember this. I thought it was just a tragic accident though. that no one ever thought about the idea that drinking too much water could hurt you. I remember the news (or at least, some of the news) acting like no one could have seen it coming and it was a big wake up call, something we'd have to keep in mind in the future. the fact that they actually had people calling in and telling them exactly what could happen, and they were dismissive of it, paints this in an entirely new light for me.
And if the court ruled that they didn't warn anyone, that means that even if the hosts didn't know, they learned it was a problem and refused to tell any of the contestants. Like, if the contestants overheard that exchange with the nurse then at least a few would've up and left.

@@lazyhomebody1356 Yes but no one's response should be that they've signed a waiver. They should've at least looked into what the nurse was talking about. I see your point bu this whole thing makes me sigh deeply
It's also worth noting that if you're trying to stay adequately hydrated, you can also consume certain foods that have a high water content as well to help out with this
I recently learned as well that drinking all your water for the day at once doesn't really hydrate you very well. It's better to do sips throughout the day! (But honestly it's so hard to do that & easy to forget)
as someone who suffered from dehydration after a (way too long) mountain bike ride, I can confirm that it takes hours between the time you drink and your body actually getting hydrated. It was a miserable experience, but I learned a bit.

I don’t know why but this story always illicits a strong involuntary feeling of dread and anxiety from me. I’m not implying that I’m somehow mentally channeling similar effects of water intoxication through osmosis (terrible pun not intended). This story is just tragic. I can’t imagine how her family must have felt, how SHE must have felt in the hours leading up to her untimely passing. Wanting to do something difficult and painful in order to bring a smile to her kids’ faces, not knowing the gravity of her mistake (the radio station’s mistake) until it was too late. Not only did that host say , "They signed releases so we're not responsible, it's okay" , but the way that they joked about her looking pregnant when she had a serious condition going on really shows just how much of a bad host they are.
I always wondered how exactly how this happens. Back then in the radio they mentioned that it was "just" an electrolyte loss, but it was never explained in any manner, thx for making this video.
Our local high school lost a football player to water intoxication in 2015. It was extremely sad because he thought he was being healthy and staying hydrated during and after practice. The player was the one in the video. I hadn't gotten that far yet. 😮🕊💔
well, there was this one time at dorm, my roommate challenged me to drink 5Liters of water, I said that's too much, then he told me "what could go wrong ? it's water!", I started drinking then when I got to 4L I started feeling a terrible pain and that's when I decided to stop, now learning about this I thank god I stoped and I'm never doing any challenges again.
This was so sad! I was listening live when this happened. Even then, as a teen, I was really worried about it sounding dangerous. I had no idea how bad it was
I once heard a case in a hospital that a woman had arrhythmias and tachycardia. The only background was that she was doing a "Water diet" to lose weight. She said she drank like 20 litters of water the last day. This time the greatest problem wasn't the loss of Sodium, but instead of Potassium, which lead to many cardiac problems. Luckily this situation had a good ending, stabilizing her ions and everything ended up alright.
I wish her family had sued the station AND the radio hosts. What's amazing is that when the NURSE called in and warned them of water intoxication. They actually replied "It's okay, they signed a waver!!!" They were actually so narcissistic that they they thought the caller was calling out of concern for the radio hosts!! That's like them holding a contest where they have inexperienced contestants handling deadly snakes, and a pro snake handler calls in to warn them, and a radio host says "It's okay, all of the DJ's are behind a protective glass. WE are safe."😳
Going into the video: Hmm, hyper-hydration or ruptured bladder? Let's spin the wheel of horrifying things excessive hydroxic acid can do to a body! After video: The radio hosts should've faced criminal charges in addition to the wrongful death suit. They straight up lied *to a medical professional* about informing the contestants of the risks. They should've been charged with one count of criminal endangerment for each survivor, and one count of criminal negligent homicide.
Absolutely. It would still be negligent even if people weren't phoning in warning them, but the fact that they clearly were yet they just dismissed it should make it a clear cut case, no excuse for it.
When I drink a lot of water, like during a hike, I start to get funny feeling in my stomach and a disgust for water. I hope it's not a symptom of something else I overlooked, but I'm glad that I'm dissuaded by my own body to drink too much water.
Its just water bloat my guy, same reason why she looked pregnant. Its pushing the edges of your stomach which makes a funny disgusting weighted down and boggy feeling. Shake your stomach well like that and you can feel the water sway
I am one of the people that drink a bottle in only a few gulps... the "secret" is to drink often, but only in sips. water bladders are perfect for that (camel back and alike).
@@penedrador Great. Thanks for sharing with us a technic to drink in an unhealthy way. Seriously, don't try to bypass the alarms of your body. There's a reason why your body tries to stop you from drinking too much in a short amount of time.
Even though I don’t drink this much water, I hold in going to the bathroom the whole school day (7 hours 10 minutes) because I don’t feel comfortable using the school bathrooms unless I absolutely need to
I keep being told you can't have too much water. Those people have never heard this story. Although I try not to drink too much water, I think my efforts to not overdo it are too successful. Every professional with the license to tell me this tells me I need to drink more water and it's my primary beverage of choice.
Most people have to force themselves to drink a fraction of the water humans need daily. You are supposed to get 80% of water from your food, but most women are dieting! There are literally alarms you can set to remind you to drink your water. I heard a cautionary tale of a teen who drank so much water (because she didn't want to get dehydrated from taking Ecstasy) that yes she died, so I learned to keep track of how much water I drank, which was alot, lol, and sorry for rambling on!
But it's pretty well known now that too much water is fatal (just like any other substance in too big amounts). I typically read the amount of 6 liters (though it's obviously somewhat individual and depends on other circumstances like how much electrolytes especially sodium one consumes). Too many runners died from electrolyte problems to make this even more well known but scientists knew about this thing before... It's sad people often don't learn this - though for most of us (I think) our body keeps us from being in danger. I am a very thirsty person but after some sane point I can't drink any more water. My throat may feel parched but my inside is hydrated and water is very off-putting. But as we know not everyone feels it this well or they still force it.
@@shiNIN42 well known is sadly very dependant on where you live something that may seem normal knowledge to you might be totally unheard of to many people depending on where they live
I really REEEAAALLY hope that radio station and those employees running it got into legal trouble and even criminally charged. I cannot BELIEVE the absolute flippancy of those djs when even being called my nurses to warn them. The didn't care!!!! Psychopathic. Disgusting. They should be charged with manslaughter AT LEAST. because even tho they signed a waiver, there were professionals calling them out for even allowing this competition. They endangered the public. There's a loophole here somewhere to get them. There's gotta be.
I drank a bit of water when watching this.....not overdoing water it can help hydrate and get nutrition going it's nice to take care of our bodies tho 😁
I live in the area and remember listening to this live on the radio. Never would've imagined it would end in death or that the events would become so well known in the medical community
I'm always dehydrated so I've made it a habit to take a drink every time I hear or see the words "drink" "water" "thirsty" etc. I drank almost an entire bottle of water while listening to this before I noticed the irony. Now I'm waiting while my bathroom is under maintenance. 😖
I knew that water was toxic in large amounts, but I thought that it would be such a large amount that it would be almost impossible to drink that much, not just seven litres!
I've read 6 liters. It's just an approximate amount of course, it's not that clear but you don't need insane amounts to mess with your electrolyte balance. If it's proper electrolyte water (really, really salty, I couldn't drink that but some people are okay with it), it should be higher but we probably still can burden our body too much with some probably near impossible amount (except water torture done "well" I suppose)... But I don't really know about that. Once I fasted for 5 days out of curiosity. No sodium intake as I did nothing about electrolytes, it's not something school teach you and magazines are about other, more or less true things... My last 2 days were definitely odd and I strongly suspect it was due to electrolyte problems. And my body is pretty resilient regarding that, some people need to drink salty water all day just because they eat keto or fast just 16-20 hours a day! Or they get dizzy, that's a common symptom of lacking sodium.
Water intoxication wouldn't have been a thing in the first place, if getting there hadn't been possible. you'd only know if you've been poisoned, if you can get poisoned after all.
2 US gallons is ~7.5L. 2 Imperial gallons is 9L (each imperial gallon is equivalent to 10 lbs). I would assume it's US gallons so your probably right but still worth noting that this guy could have very well drank 10-20% of his body weight in one sitting.
@@zancloufer I think they said the guy was playing American football, so it seemed safe to assume it was US gallons, but your point is valid. It's a lot either way.
I remember this story, in my high school bio class, our teacher used this story in our unit about cells to illustrate how important those salts are in balancing water retention in cells. I wasn’t aware of more of the details like the legal repercussions or the fact that a nurse even called in to try and warn them only to be completely disregarded. I’m glad her family won the case but My heart goes out to them for having to do it in the first place.

I'm so glad I learned this. Bc I would drink a lot of water in an hour just to fulfill the daily count. But thank goodness nothing ever happened.
Im glad you learned this too
It's also worth noting that if you're trying to stay adequately hydrated, you can also consume certain foods that have a high water content as well to help out with this
I recently learned as well that drinking all your water for the day at once doesn't really hydrate you very well.

I’m not implying that I’m somehow mentally channeling similar effects of water intoxication through osmosis (terrible pun not intended). This story is just tragic. Wanting to do something difficult and painful in order to bring a smile to her kids’ faces, not knowing the gravity of her mistake (the radio station’s mistake) until it was too late. So glad the family won that lawsuit. RIP to the Mother
They've signed a contract, it's okay if they die. -radio host

your videos always scare me but i cant stop watching 💀💀
Every single substance is perfectly safe or absolutely deadly at the right amount
@@shiNIN42 well known is sadly very dependant on where you live

Bro we were talking about this in biology class in the Osmosis unit! Glad to see this gain more attention
9:53 A bit of a mistake there. Two gallons is about 7.5 liters, so if he drank two gallons of each, he drank closer to 15 liters of total fluids.
