    This may sound strange, but a way I’ve learned to often help deal with “ear worms” is to imagine the *end* of the song playing, and then immediately try to think of something else afterward. It doesn’t work 100% of the time, but it has helped me on many occasions!

    Am I the only one that always has music playing in their head all day, every day? Because mine practically never stops! There's always some sort of song playing, unless I'm actually listening to music, which is the only time it goes away. I've had full songs, parts of songs, instrumentals, and even songs I hadn't heard in years randomly pop into my head at all hours of the day. It's so constant to me that it just blends into the background, like my own little soundtrack. Is anyone else like this or is it just me?

    This happened to me, and eventually turned into voices as well. I am surprised I was not hospitalized in that time. It happened for around 1 year. I could only sleep with a radio, and only hearing other noises and music would make it go away while hearing those things. Any classical piece or any type of music could become an ear worm. I still can not listen to some songs without fearing that they will trigger an episode again. And then, whenever I heard another song, that would become trapped in my head and constantly repeating. My brain somehow forgot the songs on the radio, as I was falling asleep.
    I did not know at first if I was actually hearing things or not. I have had it happen in the last 5 years as well. It happened around a year and a half ago for 2 months. Before that, it only happened for around 1 week.

    "Musical itch" sounds very accurate. It's like my brain is stuck in one little piece of the song and, for me, listening to the whole song is usually the most effective way to "scratch the itch" and get my brain through the rest of the song.
    Conversely, if I listen to a catchy song and stop it partway into the chorus (or otherwise the catchy part), that's the most effective way to get it stuck.

    As someone with OCD, ear worms can be BRUTAL. Sometimes it’ll take hours to fall asleep cause five different songs are looping in my head. Sometimes screaming a song in my head that never becomes a ear worm is the only way to drown them out. Fortunately most of the times it’s songs that I like, but even those are anxiety inducing.

    • @emmafranks9363
      @emmafranks9363 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I myself find that saying `no' over and over again out loud works the best. My OCD isn't nearly as bad as it used to be, but only because of years of therapy and actively working on it. That was my go-to option for when something got stuck in my head when I was younger though. It worked for words, phrases, images, and clips, too

    • @super_nova_1
      @super_nova_1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Do you ever get random phrases stuck in your head? It happens so often for me, especially at work. Alliteration is mainly what causes it but I also get the same two Beethoven symphonies stuck in my head all the time. And atleast one a day the song snippet “I saw the signs that opened up my eyes I saw the sign” will repeat.

    I've been diagnosed with OCD and while my earworms have never been outright debilitating, they have been to the point of extremely obnoxious before, especially around the time when I was going through puberty. Two that I remember were when I was around 13 and heard Gotye's "Somebody That I Used to Know" for the first time playing in a store, then was awake in bed until nearly 6am that night with that xylophone loop playing VIVIDLY in my head over and over again, and sometime not long after that, I think I was 14, I had the chorus of Bonnie Tyler's "Total Eclipse of the Heart" stuck in my head nonstop for nearly an entire month.

    My mom suffered head trauma in a car wreck and suffered a few neurological effects, including some memory loss and inability to recall words in conversation. She's mostly recovered now, but one of the long-lasting effects was getting lyrical songs stuck in her head REALLY easily and struggling to get rid of them. She basically just can't listen to any music with lyrics in English anymore. Instrumentals and non-English lyrics don't bother her, at least.

    I have a weird quirk: I wake up almost _every_ morning with a different song stuck in my head and it goes away once I listen to music to do my steps. This is normally something I actually listen to (it's on my iPod), but not always. While I _do_ have vivid dreams, the songs are not heard _in_ them and are selected either at random or by some subconscious algorithm I don't yet understand upon waking.... Operative word being "yet" lol. I'm actively trying to figure out the logic.

    Earworms only exists because the brain wants to know the full lyrics, while we can only remeber a few lines at the time it occurs. So the easiest solution is to actively and consciously listen to the song once or twice so that you know the lyrics and bäm, the earworm is gone. Works 100% of the time.

Just randomly popped in my head one day and wouldn't leave. I ended up buying a whole album just for that one song (30 years ago, no streaming. It was a CD though 😂) and i listened to that song on repeat until i knew every word and then it finally left. It's still kind of a running joke between me and my husband.

    A friend of mine said that while he’s at work sometimes he’ll play a little game. He’ll randomly sing or hum a line from a popular song but not complete the whole phrase or part of the song so that it doesn’t resolve. He’ll just stop sort of abruptly. Then usually, people who heard it will subconsciously feel the need to resolve it, so they get that song stuck in their head too. He says usually he’ll hear people humming or singing that same song at some point later in the day.
    EDIT: An example, from this video, California Girls. He’ll just go: “California girls we’re unforgettable.. 🎶 “ ..and that’s it.

    As a musical instruments passionate, I feel more likely to have the instruments sounds, rather than the songs themselves, stuck in my head as “fully playable (and FULLY EDITABLE! OMG!) earworms”,that for me is a pleasant sensation, because I can clearly guess the synth that originated that sound by a combination of my knowledge and internet researches, and with many more internet researches about many various musical instruments and genres, find also out that I’m even capable of editing the sounds stuck in my head by associating them to the original (or an imaginary one, in alternative)synthesis chains,and hardwares (real or imaginary) (OMG) of the instruments themselves! XD This also means that I can create new music with TOTALLY NEW ORIGINAL sounds that the instruments stuck in my head can make (by mentally tweaking them)! So, at least for me, is possible to have THE REAL (AND/OR IMAGINARY) INSTRUMENTS IN THEIR FULL BEAUTY themselves, rather than the sounds (or the songs), stuck in my head!

    The trauma surrounding my mother's Alzheimer's and death launched nonstop music in my right ear. It really sounded as if I was hearing an external sound - it was a choir humming songs in unison. (My mother was a classical singer and was in her church choir for close to 50 years). The first song was the famous sextet from the opera "Lucia di Lammermoor." After awhile there were more songs. I longed for silence but it never came. One thing that drove me nuts was that the choir _could not_ sing a half-step correctly. I had to teach them how to do it, using the song "Bali H'ai" from the musical _South Pacific_ (which is chock full of half-steps). This started in early 2008. Now my tinnitus is so bad that I don't always hear music, and when I do (some song or other always starts up when I get up in the morning), it's more in my head than in my ear. But it has never interfered with getting things done, unless I can't remember what the song IS! I finally identified a piano piece as a Chopin Prelude (Op. 28, No. 5, 'Raindrop') a couple of weeks ago, to my great relief.

You'd think I would've been suffering all that time, but truth be told; It never stopped me liking the song, think differently about it or get tired. This is a great video about earworms, but...
    By the description of the symptoms, her several diagnoses and successful treatment, this woman was most likely having musical auditory hallucinations. Most people associate auditory hallucinations with voices, but in can be music too. I have this. It's as if someone made a playlist of music that you have varying degrees of familiarity with and you can hear them playing it, but you can't find the source. Obviously this is your brain doing this, but it's still interpreting as if you are hearing it from an outside source, not as if it's running through your head like an earworm. It happens to me when I'm stressed out (I have bipolar and general anxiety disorder) and I've lost many nights of sleep because of it. It took me a long time to realize this was because of my disorders and needed to be treated. Hopefully it can help someone else.

      @brennap337 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      No, if it were auditory hallucinations she wouldn't have been able to distinguish they were coming from her brain. It would sound like it was playing in the room or whatever. OCD causes thoughts to become "stuck", like along, and the more she worried/thought about it the more it would stick. I have OCD and it's happened to me before. You have to break the spiral and think about something else completely which is insanely difficult.

    I usually get earworms of songs I was listening to on loop not long before, and it usually happens right when I'm trying to sleep. I just "imagine" the end of the song and try to "imagine" other things, like another song, to try to counter it. Weirdly enough, forcefully "imagining" music box version of lullabies works pretty well, as well as paying attention to my own breathing, and imagining that I'm deep underwater.

    Most earworms for me are songs I just recently discovered, or rediscovered after a long time of not hearing it, and fell obsessively in love with right away. I find what works best to unstick one is to listen to the song on repeat until it eventually becomes _too_ familiar and recitable, losing that exciting novelty that made my brain latch onto it. It usually takes a couple days of that and then the earworm goes away.
