    The quality of this recording is extraordinary. And the show features a very interesting variation of the 1981 setlists, that tended to be quite repetitive. My personal favorites the drowning man and in your house are amazing, and the early versions of the pornography song material show just how much potential the band had. These bootlegs are quite a treat. Almost like time travel to the days when I was far too young to attend concerts. Thanks for the wonderful uploads.

      I especially love the early versions of the 2 songs from Pornography (Figurehead, Hanging Gardens). They're so raw and embryonic. Quite different from how they ended up on the album. I actually was of concert-going age at this time (16 years old in '81), and already into the Cure. The problem was I was living in middle America, and before they finally did a full U.S. tour in the fall of '84, the only cities they played in America were a select few Northeastern cities (NYC, Boston, Philly, D.C.), and 2 West coast cities (L.A. and San Francisco). Since I grew up literally equal distance from the Northeast and California in either direction, all I could do was listen to the records and read about their gigs. Really pissed me off at the time. They were great when I finally got to see them in late '84, but it was *THIS* era of the Cure that I was really heavily into. Oh well.

      @@BrewzerrI too adored the Cure, but despite living in London I wasn't old enough to see them until that '84 tour, when I was 15. As you say, it was a different band by then.

    I love this early version of The Figurehead. Sounds fresh and raw. Must have been brand-spanking new at the time. Hanging Garden too. Like a totally different song than what they recorded for Pornography. Would have loved to have seen them at this time, but I was 16 and stranded in a middle-American cultural wasteland, and the Cure didn't set foot in that part of the world until late '84, when they had become an entirely different band.

      Yes us Brits were spoilt for choice with great British bands in the 80s. On the other hand American bands rarely came to the UK in that decade! Swings and roundabouts

    • @Spectrescup
      @Spectrescup ปีที่แล้ว

      @leethomas255 it's true. Amazing that no American band recorded a Peel session between Beefheart in the early 70's and Sonic Youth in 87, but as you say American bands rarely ventured over, although you'd think Pere Ubu, Suicide or the Voidoids, who were all here a fair bit, weren't asked.
      Mind you, in those days Sessions were often reserved for new bands, and Britain between 76 and 82 had the greatest glut of great new music in their history (and I include 65-68).

    I remember being LAUGHED AT in 1981 because I liked The Cure (who?) and New Order (what?). I laugh now at the how big they both became and I hope THEY cringed every time they heard those names again and again and again.

      Nah, they probably just lie and tell everyone they've been into 'em since day one. That's usually how it goes with people.

      People don't realise how little mainstream recognition Joy Division had here in England in their lifetime.
      Sure, music press readers knew them, but they were completely unknown to the general public. That their records (like Fall or Cure Lps) achieved respectable chart positions was cos their fans were the sort who'd buy the records the week of release, but they rarely hung around in the charts for long after that.

    This is such an important document, the darkness of Faith then forming into the early stages of Pornography, so lucky to have this fantasy recording. It's just wonderful, particularly the long Drowning Man at the start.
    One thing though, the Figurehead is not a different beat, it's just actually played wrong. Lol was playing exactly the same (great) beat he's always played for this, and Simon came in on the wrong musical quatrain and they couldn't get it back, so they just played ahead with it, rather than stop and start again, which is why everything sounds upside down. Must have been a very very early live version of it, maybe the first?
    I say this as a drummer who has been through this experience several times, everyone starts up but in the wrong place, and no one can tell (except the drummer usually) why it all sounds so odd. I hear other live bands do it sometimes also. The choice is to stop and start again, or just make the most of it, which they did here.

    This version of "The Hanging Garden" is (perhaps unsurprisingly) very similar to the early demo that's included on the Deluxe Edition of "Pornography".

    does anyone have a good idea of what some of the alternate lyrics are for Pornography tracks? I can't string together more than half a line at a time.
