I had this exact iPod, green and everything, and I absolutely LOVED it. I was running competitively at the time and this was the first time I was able to take music with my on workout runs that didn't weigh me down or skip at all. When it came out, I knew it was for me. To be frank, up until music came to smart watches, this was still my go-to music listening device for running.
This ipod has always been hilarious to me. I've hunted it down and bought one last month. The lack of TH-cam videos on this was criminal. Thank you so much and sorry if this video gives them a price spike
Bruh, same here! Lmao. There’s something fun about finding old tech products from brands like Apple and then showing those products to ppl who’ve likely never seen or heard of them before. Hopefully more tech TH-camrs continue this trend and eventually recognize the 3rd gen shuffle
I still own this one. With the engraving, "whisper word's of wisdom" on it. Got it with the money I made working at the local camera store during high school. Even bought a waterproof earbud set that you housed it in to go swimming. That was a great fall/summer for me when I picked up in 2009 I think. Toronto weather was great, I was working so had lots of disposable income, went out late with friends, was in great shape. The air just smelled and tasted better. Man I hated high school. But not that summer. I still keep this shuffle near me to remind me of that time. 12 years ago. Damn.
I had one as a freshman in 2009. it was nice for working out because it was very light and stayed clipped on. I did curse its low memory a few times trying to make the perfect playlist. The little voice had a knack for awkward pronunciation that had me in tears a few times.
I had one of these as a kid and I had 2 alternatives to the included headphones, both made by Scosche. The first was a dongle with the 3 buttons that connected between the iPod and any 3.5 mm headphone plug (didn’t last long before it fell apart). The second was a case that you slid the iPod into with a built in plug that went into the iPod, it had the 3 buttons on the opposite side from the clip, and a 3.5 mm jack on top. I felt like such a badass using this to listen to music in class without getting caught, which was even easier because I didn’t have to pull it out of my pocket to scroll through playlists. I just wore a hoodie and stabbed a hole in one of the pockets to run the headphone wire through.
God I miss having a Shuffle. I remember spending so much time uploading my music to my original (and then the second and third gen) and eventually I listened to it so much that I had my entire library order memorized.
Man I remember back when I used to take the time to edit and type up the song names and artists for albums. I actually remembered the order of songs on albums. Nowadays with streaming, it’s very, very hard to actually do that. I can’t remember the order of any new songs on albums except maybe Billie Eilish’s first album.
I was on a bus with a church group to Six Flags. On the way there I had a brief connection with this girl. On the way back we shared headphones from my shuffle and listened together while holding hands. I’ll never forget
I had the green shuffle 3 when I was a teenager and thanks to it i was able to have an Apple MP3 player without much money. This videos brings back a lot of nice memories about it thanks.
I remember saving a whole year of birthday and christmas money to get a 2nd gen shuffle used in elementary school, I felt so cool whipping that thing out on the bus in 5th grade, moved in with my grandparents when I was 10 and got grounded almost immediately and they still have it, I turn 25 in 2 weeks
I remember when it came out and I got the Apple Store exclusive version, in which the whole Shuffle was made of stainless steel, as opposed to just the clip. I honestly loved it, and I thought it was just the coolest thing!
I had the first grey version of this, and fell in love with it. It was perfect when cycling or working out as I could clip it only my clothes and not have to find the device to operate it, as I could always reach the earbud wire. Being small was key and it excelled at that. even now I use Jaybird bluetooth earbuds with a wire connecting them (gives some security while cycling, although they have never popped out) and I always control them with the switch on the wire. Even now at gym I always operate music with AirPods. I think Apple was onto something here, but we just weren't ready for it
You said it yourself. Even now you use headphone controls instead of device controls. You know why? Because ALL devices can use headphone controls. But this one forces you to use them. So it's objectively worse and a stupid idea. It would be like if your jaybirds were the ONLY way to play and pause music.

I had this when I was 11 yrs old. Didn't find it too hard to use. It was aight. Cool that I didn't have to reach out for the device when navigating it. I also used it a lot as a flash drive. Given the context of that time, having one of these was still such a big deal in terms of what it can do while being this handy. Unfortunately it was too small that I lost it. Lol.
Had one of these when I was 6 (it was my first ever tech product), and I loved it. Lost it about 2 years later, which is pretty unsurprising given how small it is, but it was cool. Honestly if someone made one of these with a larger capacity, and perhaps supported bluetooth, I'd still use it, especially for podcasts.
This video taught me two things: 1) There's a third-gen Shuffle with no buttons. 2) The square Shuffle I mysteriously found in my room one day is a fourth-gen, not a refresh of the rectangular second-gen I got as a gift back in '07. I've never used the fourth-gen, but it's good to finally know what the button does.
I remember having this years ago and I have to say it was an interesting experience. It was a gift from my dad and I have to say that voice over was a neat feature!
I have this version of the iPod Shuffle and it was "unleashed" when Scosche made a button case for it, which I have as well. It's a great size, even with this addition of the Scosche part, and still works like a charm even today.
I loved my 4th gen shuffle. It lasted a long time and had that convenient clip. I'm a fan of shuffling music and not as much making playlists or hunting around for the next track.
This was a cool ipod, I had it when it first came out and the buttons on the headphones was a rad gimmick. And you can use 3rd party headphones just fine, the issue was if you used 3rd party headphones WITHOUT a microphone on them. It -required- the 3rd ring on the audio jack to function properly.
I still have this. I've been using this for over a decade already; and I honestly love how convenient it is especially when traveling and running. This is also my first apple product, and this is the reason why I love Apple as this product showed how apple make sustainable products that could last long and functional even if it's been a decade old already.
Great!....I just found mine but can't seem to make it work. It's not charging at all. Do you have any idea of how to make it work again, do you have to download itunes for it to charge? (I've got a PC) Any comment will be appreciated ;)
I used to have this iPod, same color and everything. I ended up selling it because I didn't want to buy new earbuds from Apple every time the ones I had broke. It was around the time Spotify was becoming more and more popular, so it didn't make much sense to keep using that iPod anyway. Sometimes I still miss it though, especially during long road trips, and also just for that feeling of owning an iPod
I'm happy you survived your near fatal wound! I have a 3rd generation iPod Shuffle and still use it and love it! But for me it serves one purpose, providing music to my ears via my old Bose QC15 headphones (which have the volume and center buttons on the cable) while I'm mowing the lawn. While the voice over is pretty cool, I deactivated it in favor of more space for music. With over 900 songs of my own choosing, mowing the lawn has never been so enjoyable!
You can put all of your favorite songs into one huge 1000 song playlist, and carry. Best ipod ever, still use it, have the black version with 4GB capacity. Works with any earphones, but voice over can be used with just the old apple ones from 2009-2012... One quirky feature of this, if you sync with a windows PC, you get a female voice, and with Mac you get a male voice for voice over.
I still have mine from back when it first came out, it was super useful to keep in the car as it took up literally no space when plugged in to the USB port and you still had full library control via the cars display.
I searched for videos about this iPod because it's my favorite product that Apple ever made. All these years later, I still miss it. It was a really, really beautiful and elegant product that worked great. Not hard to figure out the remote control on the cable. Volume up and down. Two taps to skip to next song, three taps to go back, one tap to stop, one tap to start, press and hold to skip to different albums or podcasts. Very fun, very easy.
Why didn’t they just release a dongle thing that converted your headset to one with buttons. And since the connector wouldn’t have changed then you could just leave it on.
I remember these. I liked the second gen nano way more. I had saved up for a silver one when it came out and I used the hell out of it. Thing still works to this day
I had this and as a kid my earphones broke and so I had to order a 3rd party controller extender for like $8 to use any earphones I wanted. I also usually just plugged in the ipod into my xbox 360 and used the music player function there. So many good memories as a kid
VoiceOver was introduced for the first time as a gesture based screen reader on the iPhone three GS. You are right about it being on macOS in 2007 though. VoiceOver on the iPod shuffle is nothing more than some clips that were gathered from your Mac back in the day.
Yeah, VoiceOver was introduced as Spoken Interface Preview for Panther in 2004, then bundled with Tiger, from installation to setup and beyond in 2005. I would love to sync this with an old G3 which cannot run Leopard for the older voice clips. There were also .wav files of Alex on the iPod, so super cool.
Do you mean that instead of bundling a TTS engine, the iTunes app simply rendered the TTS from the computer and then bundled the audio descriptions with the songs themselves upon syncing? That's a clever workaround I've heard of
I used to absolutely love mine. Was perfect for snowboarding or pretty much anything active. Even to this day I still mostly use the inline controller on my earbuds to control my music. Even though it's an Android phone now instead of a Apple device.
I have the mirror version of this one. It was great. Until I added an audio book to it and then it would randomly try and play a chapter of a book between songs. If you ever tried to pause the book it could skip instead of pause. So listening to books was a nightmare. Eventually a third party made a big adaptor. It gave you buttons on the actual iPod and you could use any 3.5mm Jack headphones with it.
I remember whenever the ad came up for the shuffle, my Dad would rile up me and my two siblings, fake-shouting, "IT'S THE MONOLITH!!!! FROM '2001'!!!!!! WE GOTTA GO!!!!" Ahh, memories...
This was the first iPod I ever bought with my own money. I was in middle school and I just kept saving every penny I got until I finally got my own iPod. I got the Black/space grey one. Also they sold an adapter that just the buttons so you could plug in any headphones.
I actually forgot (or, didn't know) this model existed. In 2010 (obviously after this came out) I was too caught up in the iPod Touch realm of things as well as the square iPod Nano with its touch screen, so this just passed me by. It seems like this just came and went. Truly a strange piece of tech indeed. It should've at least had volume controls IMO, or a physical mute switch. I do like the look of it however. It's extremely sleek and looks like it could fit anywhere. But this is an extreme example of something looking pretty but also being a pain to actually use. I think it'd actually be a cool device if it had all the traditional physical controls, but in that form factor and with the same appearance. That would've made for a compelling Shuffle, I think. Speaking of the iPod Touch, I also vaguely remember VoiceOver being a thing on there, if I'm remembering correctly. But I never used it, it was always just a vague settings option and nothing more.
This was my first iPod and first Apple product of any kind and it was the starting point of my full switch to the Apple ecosystem, so it is weird to see that some people found it strange, for me it always felt intuitive to use (ok after the first few hours of geeting used to the controls). I would still be using it, but I find it hard to find compatible earphones, because the "new" earpods don't work :(
Had the second gen. Unfortunately didn't last long after a year. Was a good workout partner for me that got me into running marathons. Wanted the Sony mp3 but they were too pricy
I had this iPod and loved it. It was great for the gym! They had a control adapter for any headphones. This was perfect for a set of Bose headphones I had a disconnection right a neck level. I would put on the adapter and clip the iPod to my shirt collar. I would no longer risk cords catching on machines or weights. For me it worked amazingly, but for sure it was a small market.
Seeing the cable EarPods and the remote on it gave me some flashbacks. It’s funny to think about the struggles we had back in the days with the cables and how neat and convenient the Bluetooth earbuds nowadays are
I miss my old Shuffle 3! Thanks for bringing back forgotten memories, it wasn’t that good but it was all I had for a while as a kid, and I really wish I had taken care of it.
I still have the 1st and 2nd gen Shuffle and 1st Nano in my drawer! Back in college I used the 1st gen Shuffle to listen to music and as a thumb drive for my schoolwork. I played around with them not too long ago and it’s amazing they still work after all these years.
This was the first (and only) iPod I ever owned. This was my favorite thing in the world up until my apple earphones broke. And then I found out how expensive their earphones were... And then this just became a glorified USB.
I used this thing for over a decade. It was a convenient actually-pocketable general USB storage device in an era where that was something necessary with the added bonus of being a good quality mp3 player at a time where other mp3 players did not have the most reliable build quality. It's the only apple product I have ever felt had no competition. Before smartphones were so widespread it did a good 75% of what I use mine for these days.
There are only limited models of headphones have remote controls work on the Shuffle 3 in my experience: Of course the earbuds shipped with it, the iPhone 4/4S earbuds, 2008 old Apple In-Ear, Beats Tour series, Powerbeats wired, Beats Solo series, Beats Studio series’s, or any over-ear/on-ear headphones would work if you swap the cable to a Beats remote control cable. Note: EarPods wouldn’t work, Apple In-Ear 2012 refresh wouldn’t work, urBeats series wouldn’t work, and Beats EP wouldn’t work. They do play sound but remote control wouldn’t work.
Had it, loved and hated it. This thing is amazing when you know your way around it, but the 4th gen kept all the same features except the 4gb storage. Voice over was awesome because I could navigate albums and playlists by using it without looking. I could only imagine blind people being really happy to own one of these. Wish they still sold the shuffle 4th but with 8gb storage minimum. Biggest problem today, no earbuds I've found will work, even Apple's own earpods with remote don't work. You have to have the official 2nd gen style apple earbuds with a remote.
I bought one of these in like 2012 to use for snowboarding and I actually loved it. Im the type of person that is happy to listen to pretty much any of my music so I wasn't bothered at all by having no buttons. And the tiny size was perfect for snowboarding. I couldn't even tell I had it on me.
Thank you sooo much for this elaborate review!! I'm not a huge Apple fan by any means, but the 3rd gen Shuffle is one of my favorite tech products of ALL TIME. I love how weirdly inconvenient, yet at the same time strangely simplistic and easy to use it is. I loved going to the gym with this thing, as clipping it onto my shirt and not having to worry about a screen cracking or some other flimsy part breaking while handling weights was a huge relief. When the original headset broke, I tried to use the newer Apple buds but soon realised that they actually DO NOT WORK with the 3rd gen Shuffle. So, in typical Apple manner, if your og headset broke, you were pretty much screwed. Luckily though, I found a third party headphone adapter with buttons on eBay (this was back in 2014, and I'm happy to report that the adapter STILL WORKS!!).
I've got this device when it was released, many many years ago. The headphones lasted for 2 years, and after I just had to get another pair of headphones for the ipod to continue working. Was pretty neat and minimalistic.

Great!....I just found mine but can't seem to make it work. It's not charging at all. Do you have any idea of how to make it work again, do you have to download itunes for it to charge? (I've got a PC) Any comment will be appreciated ;)
I HAD ONE OF THESE! Dropped it in coffee at the mental hospital I stayed at
Can't wait to see our "mate" reviewing this nugget :)
mom scolding u that u smoke , cuz she found a lighter ?
naaa mom , its my ipod shuffle suspiciously looking
He cut his finger to make this, show him some respect. (looking at you, people who disliked the video).
Why would people dislike this 😔
You're laughing, he cut his finger, and you're laughing
7:08 Blood Warning ⚠️ make sure to tag these sequences. Some people can be highly anxious and nauseated or even faint to these. Not me though
With over 900 songs of my own choosing, mowing the lawn has never been so enjoyable!
i keep reading this as “the boneless ipod”
I remember getting the 2nd gen shuffle for my 10th birthday, and immediately loading up System of a Down's Mezmerize
ALL the music in this video is LEGENDARY
WELCOME H O M E -
You can put all of your favorite songs into one huge 1000 song playlist, and carry.
I legit found out a about this yesterday because I was watching the 4th gen shuffle keynote and wanted to know more. You have some great timing.
Did not expect 7:06 but hilarious commentary 😂
Why didn’t they just release a dongle thing that converted your headset to one with buttons. And since the connector wouldn’t have changed then you could just leave it on.
@TH-cam Nutzer the dirty buds
They had some dingus remote thing that you could connect your headphones to
@@myrealusername2193 it’s true! My first iPod, a 20gb 3rd gen, came with all the crap. Remote, case, dock thing.. all the crap.
Back then the headphone Jack was the charging Jack. Now the charging Jack is the headphone Jack.
91 tech you are giving me the nostalgia feels with this review. Keep up the great work bro
It's literally a flash drive with a headphone jack
VoiceOver was introduced for the first time as a gesture based screen reader on the iPhone three GS. You are right about it being on macOS in 2007 though. VoiceOver on the iPod shuffle is nothing more than some clips that were gathered from your Mac back in the day.
I think Mac is 9 even had voice over. As I remember using it on osx 10.4 and earlier
@@lorumipsum1129 OK
Yeah, VoiceOver was introduced as Spoken Interface Preview for Panther in 2004, then bundled with Tiger, from installation to setup and beyond in 2005. I would love to sync this with an old G3 which cannot run Leopard for the older voice clips. There were also .wav files of Alex on the iPod, so super cool.
@@setoth1234 oh yeah. I would want to see an old iMac, I mean iBook G4.
Do you mean that instead of bundling a TTS engine, the iTunes app simply rendered the TTS from the computer and then bundled the audio descriptions with the songs themselves upon syncing? That's a clever workaround I've heard of
I thought that ipod was super dope looking! I still have my 2nd generation shuffle!
Whoa!, this review turned into a Tarantino movie all the sudden.
Honestly, whenever I go for a run I just hit play on the same playlist every time.
The shuffle is absolutely perfect for that.
I used to absolutely love mine. Was perfect for snowboarding or pretty much anything active.
Even to this day I still mostly use the inline controller on my earbuds to control my music.
Even though it's an Android phone now instead of a Apple device.
I have SUCH emotional connection to this one. It was my first apple product - only 1 I could afford - and it was a great time for music too
I have the mirror version of this one.
I was in middle school and
I just kept saving every penny I got until I finally got my own iPod. I got the Black/space grey one. Also they sold an adapter that just the buttons so you could plug in any headphones.
Do u know where I could buy that adapter today?
I genuinely loved this iPod. Easily my favourite MP3 player ever!
But I never used it, it was always just a vague settings option and nothing more.
i like the little half-unintended humor segments lmao mans really cut himself opening a damn ipod and proceeded to die on camera
This was my first iPod and first Apple product of any kind and it was the starting point of my full switch to the Apple ecosystem, so it is weird to see that some people found it strange, for me it always felt intuitive to use (ok after the first few hours of geeting used to the controls). I would still be using it, but I find it hard to find compatible earphones, because the "new" earpods don't work :(
“I suddenly realize I’m bleeding” what a twist😂
This video was informative and kept me in suspense
Had the second gen. Unfortunately didn't last long after a year. Was a good workout partner for me that got me into running marathons. Wanted the Sony mp3 but they were too pricy
My 2nd gen still works today.
Dude the music you chose for this is sick I used to listen to this synth over and over
Renaissance by Home. One of my favorite songs that got me into synth wave. Thank you for including it in your videos.
The 1st Gen shuffle was my fav. Took that snowboarding with me all the time when I was a kid.
I remember the old EarPods, this brings me back to the iPod Touch 4th gen
DankPods: “Oi mate I’m getting some ideas fah dis’ nugget…”
I had this iPod and loved it. It was great for the gym! They had a control adapter for any headphones. This was perfect for a set of Bose headphones I had a disconnection right a neck level. I would put on the adapter and clip the iPod to my shirt collar. I would no longer risk cords catching on machines or weights. For me it worked amazingly, but for sure it was a small market.
Seeing the cable EarPods and the remote on it gave me some flashbacks.
It’s funny to think about the struggles we had back in the days with the cables and how neat and convenient the Bluetooth earbuds nowadays are
Imagine how great this would have been if it had Siri
6:34 introducing USB type D
Now you can insert it by 360 sides, not only just 2
I miss my old Shuffle 3!
This was so nostalgic. I also had the green one.
I remember having the so vivid in my brain. I knew exactly were my songs were. Which playlists came in next. It was not distracting in any way.
I had this thing and I loved it. Having all your music in this small device is just convenient and I felt so cool he
It looks like a green lighter
Right? Although it's much smaller than an average lighter lol.
Not gonna lie Apple back in the day was untouchable, now not so much.
Yeah I misss iOS 6 tbh and all its former glory 😔
So this is probably one of the best music devices built for people having visual impairments never imagined Apple is that thoughtful.
As someone who uses the 3rd gen shuffle still let me just say apple released a remote for it that let you use any headphones with it.
Skull candy 50/50 earphones will work with 3rd gen Shuffle.
Huh, wouldn’t’ve expected there to be a compatibility issue, I thought TRRS with remote was pretty much a standard.
0:43 “I’m careful with my laptop, I don’t eat with it, I try to keep it clean…” **he says as he shows his laptop on grass**
Didn’t know apple made a vape
This thing probably spent 8 years sitting in a mall claw machine
I don’t remember this being a thing
It short lived
I've got this device when it was released, many many years ago. The headphones lasted for 2 years, and after I just had to get another pair of headphones for the ipod to continue working. Was pretty neat and minimalistic.
First Person to Lose Blood for Just an Unboxing Video
Appreciate You Man 😂
I Hope You Are Fine 🥺
i remembered using that first iPod shuffle for so long from 2006-2014 , it was a hassle when everyone moved on to smartphones
