Thanks for this video. Having been in open pit diamond mining for many years in many places, I now realized that most of the rocks we dismissed as 'Samples' were in fact valuable precious stones that we do not know!
Now I've got the itch again! No way to get there, but to know that I drove the roads all around that area & not knowing... Those beautiful apatite crystals reminded me of many I found at the Beryl Pit at Quadeville. Plus your mention of Bear Lake, which was a true disappointment for me, drove my itch to where I may need a liter of calamine to ease it!! ;-)
I had a large gem mineral rock collection. Sadly my collection was stolen..The insurance company is claiming after paying for the items first turned in that now items are considered like jewelry furs which has limits of coverage. They deducted money paid for items from final inventory items turned in a few months later. Is there a way to get around their screwing me royal. They paid for items claimed then when they received final inventory refused and deducted amt. Paid from items that were covered. Please help
Sorry, Randy, but you are asking the wrong person for help on this. I specifically asked my insurance co. about my collection. They said they were covered ONLY if I can prove the value of each piece and not what I may have paid for particular items. Since most of my collection is hand-picked (meaning, I collected them) trying to find a "market" value for each item would be impossible. I have absolutely no idea how you would handle a situation like you are facing. Sorry, my friend...
You mean alf from the flea market by Tim hortins on the highway? You also must have met those fellows not quite at bear lake mine. Funny I chatted with the titanite guys as we'll, small world. Those apipitites were really nice, we mostly found the light green ones where we dug not so much the bright red. We also got some small titanite and a few needle type crystals we can't quite identify yet. If it's the same alf I've met with my son he's a great guy and not shy to give tips. Cheers and great vid.
Thanks and yes, it was alf from the flea market. I was passing through and my mother wanted to stop and check out the deals - hence Alf. I am especially interested in titanite and the guy I met at Bear lake was from the Ottawa area and that was about 15 years ago.
ahh, I met two brothers at another site close to bear lake that were only interested in the titanite. Ive met them there both times I went so they must have been doing well in finding it. Alfs a great guy! we make it a point to stop there and shoot the breeze with him when we visit Bancroft. So far this is the first season my son and I have really tried for mineral hunting and we have done pretty well thanks to the few good fellow rockhounds we have met and ran into on the road. thanks again and cheers.
I agree with Caver461. I've never encountered Quartz on the properties. It's not abundant and there are so many more interesting things to find in my opinion.
Been trying to find this location for a year now. 4 hours each way and still cant seem to find it. Cant wait until i finally find the spot. I end up just going to tory hill everytime
Thanks for sharing. Ben E. Clement Mineral Museum housed in Marion, KY has an outstanding collection of minerals, gemstones, carvings, period journals, photographs, mining tools and other items. The collection has been visited by various authorities on minerals and is believed to be one of the finest in existence. The Ben E. Clement Mineral Museum, Inc. was formed in June 1990 to make the attraction something that would generate outside interest in the mineral and mining heritage of West Kentucky.
I was there about a week ago, and its still worth visiting. My observation about the place that it is very similar to Bear Lake dig (except one can on dig at Bear Lake anymore given it is now in private hands). As for the crystals, the feldspar is really a feldspathoid scapolite (even then, massive in size, with decent crystal faces). Near the almost horizontal calcite views, one can find a layer of decent augite (1 to 3 cm in diameter) with multiple faces. I do have to agree with the video in the amount of red apatite, given it is more common than the green apatite, but many of the crystals are chemically eroded and in fragments (hard to find a fully formed hexagonal crystal).
And if one has a truck with 4 X 4, one can drive up to the workings (great place is one is not physically able to walk very far or is in a wheel chair; can't really say that about Titanite Hill).
Always loved your videos! My fiancé and I love crystals and I love rockhounding whenever we go to her aunt and uncles in Bancroft. This year I’d love to surprise her a really nice specimen from that area. Would you even consider selling me something you found? Please let me know , thanks brother !!
Found my first mineral a few days ago. Quarts with small crystals of feldspar in white and red color. Got me interested in finding more. So im reading about where i can find minerals. And from what i understand so far, minerals CAN be found anywhere, more or less ? I live in a area in Sweden with LOADS of ice age stones, stones brought here from different places, some from different countries and from the middle of the ocean :)
HI .We passed by Smart mine but did not see the mailbox but we seen a red paper box at the road. Is that where we pay. We will be going soon . Great interesting videos . .Thanks
Rachelle Lovesy The mailbox is some distance from the mine, off the top of my head I recall that it is on the main road toward eganville directly across from a place where they repair trucks. The mailbox is orange and it says 'Miller'. good luck
Great video and channel, thanks for sharing! :) Faved and subbed. Guess rockhounding is one of the few things that lets a grown man play in the dirt and mud like a little kid, eh? :D I'd like to ask how you locate places to go rockhounding in the first place. Do you tend to go by word of mouth? Hunt through old records on mine locations? Investigate local geology All of the above? And how much planning goes into visiting a new location?
Bancroft?? Ya, it's amazing how many calcite seams there are in that part of Sebastopol township. Some mined, some excavated, and many as crystal-lined crevaces in the bedrock. The occurrences exist underwater in Lake Clear as well.
Awesome spot and great video.... Was thinking of checking it out... From Petawawa and wondering exactly where that trail might be :) would love to take a look :) which road are you on? Thx
so nice you inspired me because in my area I can try to make this real trials on the root of mountain Kilimanjaro valleys my home place, hope so I can expose this fundamental of precious digger fighter, thanks so much for your idea
Thank you for sharing with us. I have no idea how rock hounding works, but I really wanna try it. When you find an area like this of the video, no matter where you dig you will find something, or is it some specific areas ?
Hi,Im in Brasil and came acros some crystals in a mountain. The place has been ¨visited¨before and now i would like some advice on how to trace the path as you might say to find where i might find the untouched area.I would apreceate any helpfull advice on what to look for on the out side as it is full of trees and very large boulders (cave size) ,you can actually walk underneath them. The crystals i found are about 3 mts from a river bank. Some are pointy but most are all broken tips for now.please get in contact with me.thank you for your positive insights.
+eric gringo It all depends upon what type of crystals and the local geology, but some general advice is to locate the seam from where they came and dig into that. If you can describe the crystal and the local rock I might have a better idea of what to say. Is the rock granite, marble, calcite? What color are the crystals, what shape, habit etc.
Excelent, I find soccer size rocks, opaque white with tint of brown orange ,all crystal formation along the river.-in the site that has been escavated coarse sand dirt, and some individual crystals, opaque to transperent.aperent some from previous diggings and some as i dig horizontle to the mountain,(with a plastic fork type tool. Then about 2 mts.up the mountain trees w-thick humos ,under that about 12 in. deep small clear crystals.some clusters break easily.Ill try to identify the huge boulders.different clays red ,light brown ,grey.sweet smell apears upon digging (never more than 12 in.) Those that do apear look as if there was an explossion of sorts, there scattered and i dont see the ¨ seam ¨.Thank you again!
eric gringo sounds very interesting - maybe smoky quartz. Could be occurring in cavities in a layer. If someone has been there before you with the intention of extracting specimens the best spots are likely where they've been digging. Brazil has some amazing minerals - tourmaline jumps to mind.
ok,today I found what looks like a base, flat on the bottom side and thousands of very small crystals on the top. is this of any help?this is in clay, then over that sandy then on top rock.
TheIdeanator Nothing to worry about. The track leading there is very well defined - you are looking at about 400 meters along a clear track and then a turn to the right. study the video and you'll recognize all the points. Are you attending the gemboree? They are doing several geologist led trips to this spot.
I'm thinking about it. Its very close to when I'd like to go so I may as well. There's only one trip to the mine listed on the 28th but if its an easy spot I may well find it on my own first. I've collected in the bancroft area before and the word "road" is used more than it should which is why I ask.
TheIdeanator in this case it should not be a problem. quite honestly, I prefer to go on my own and make a day of it, but there are also advantages to going with a group. If you are going on your own let me know and I will send an aerial photo with more precise directions than might be on the video.
Caver461 From what looks available I think it might be worth a lone trip or two. I hear there are other excellent spots in the immediate area like the meany mine and turner island, any recommendations on those?
TheIdeanator I think you can follow the track to the Meany Mine, I had started in that direction, but did not make it there. If you want to do turner's Island there is a real nice place that rents cabins and boats right across the way - can't remember the name of it.
The link below shows the location and if you click on the "Latitude & Longitude (decimal):" link, it will bring up a Google map of where this mine is. Doesn't look like a far walk, if the locale is accurate. www.mindat.org/loc-7806.html
Can you teach me sir. I love hiking. I live on Indonesia. And my home town so close with arjuna mount. Can you tell me how can i found the minerals here?

Wow, some great finds at Smart Mine - Adam and I enjoyed your video Mick!
Fantastic, looks like a great way to enjoy what the earth has to offer us, just superb finds. May have to visit!!!
I'm strongly considering a trip to Turner Island this spring (if I can get permission)
These videos are excellent. This is the fellow to watch.

To a collector, and there are certainly some museum quality specimens as well.
can you look for quartz

This is not the most abundant crystal at this location - in fact I've not found any here.

That's really pretty

Im interested in radio active rocks i live in Toronto can i find Uranite and Autunite there? is Titanite radioactive also?
Awesome! Lucky it was wet because it's a lot easier to dig.
Loved that snake skin opal you had a video of
Caver461 Yes I was lucky to snag that one. When picking from opal parcels in Ethiopia there are very few top choice stones.
I wonder where do they sell their super rocks?
Would like to know how to find crystals anywhere .
Crystals are rare and therefore prized where they are found. They need to be there to begin with - research.
hi! im 17 old and i love your job

Not a great deal, but when he does you can bet its meaningful.

amazing that ALF the alien gave you that intel
We'd all be wiser if we listened to Alf
In Portugal you can find nice minerals 😉
Pedro Travassos Yes i find
You mentioned mica a lot and mica is a commen mineral
Yes, its a common mineral but what makes it unusual is the overall size of the books.
my cottage is in haliburton would you happen to know how long od a drive that would be?
It was about1.5 hrs from Bancroft, but I was rubber necking all sorts of road cuttings and other attractions on route so less time maybe if you are purposeful
Can somone let me know what is termoline i got it here in my place
I love rocks and minerals. They are so cool. I hate when people them for jewelry
+Daisha Clayton check out wirewraps
wonder if it's all gone today, time fly's
Please tell where it is
Like what road is it off?
Bancroft chamber of commerce can provide directions and where to pay the $10 collecting fee. it is in the vicinity of Lake clear
+Caver461 ok thanks

The walk in from wittke road is about 10 minutes and this time of the year there should be few bugs.
It beautyful minerals

here in my country, is the biggest gold medal in Albania. this measure of 1 kg of 45% mineral is gold. how can I divide gold, if you have any formula, can you email me Please ?
is this in the usa?
No, its in the Bancroft Ontario area. The mineral claims owner ask people to make a $10 donation to dig.
Why didn't you take the mica I would
I actually take very few specimens - I'm looking for gem quality material
has anyone noticed at 2.01 and a few seconds it looks like a dead girls face hanging on the top left corner of the hole?
Great finds. Good job prospecting. I am a prospector also. God will give you great specimens in the future. Just keep prospecting.
omg i want to go in this place😱😱😱😱😱😱
Am i permitted to go there myself? Park and walk around to dig? Or is there laws and rules.. i dont want to get in trouble i would be alone with the wife
watch for jasper while you are there, any stone with color. id take home.
+jenny minny You'd be buried in more than you can carry if thats your plan.

How do you know where to find mines?
Research or using observation of the clues
Abandoned Mines Inventory System or whatever it's called. I may be wrong about the name but you can go on the AMIS site and it points out all registered mines from the past that are no longer utilized.
Research on the internet before going or confer with other rockhounds.
