Been a fan since I started gem hunting 5 years ago, quick question and an idea:
-You should TOTALLY go to highway 1 Big Surr area for Jasper and football sized bubble citrine, and a quarter mile away from those rivers in the redwoods, JADE COVE, big sur jade is an ocean deposite of blue green black jade that washes up in a cove where the fog is green from the serpentine reflection!
-Have you ever come across Ajoite? I really want to do another few week long tour through AZ/NV/CA as I do and its top of my list
    Keep on hounding dude!

Opal is so fun to dig for! My family and I usually go dig at Rainbow Ridge, it's real close to the royal peacock, and we come out with some awesome stuff from rainbow ridge. They are a bit more expensive, but I'd totally recommend going there. You can either pay to dig the tailings or you can get a large loader scoop and have the day to go through it.

You really shouldn't be holding that Gypsum fur for lack of better word if you look it up they actually become small spores and hook to your lungs if you breed them in and can make you deathly sick. Check it out if you don't believe me just giving you a heads-up and anyone else that goes up there some minerals even though they're very nice and cool to have you have to be careful when handling or breathing them just like opal it's very beautiful and a gym but it can give you silicosis if you breathe the dust when cutting. DEFINITELY keep all the wood you find out there, even if it looks like it doesn't have the opal with the fire. I've collected many pieces from there that I've taken home just because the limb casts looked nice for display, but when I wet them in the sunlight, I see little stringers of precious opal running through them. Sometimes the opal is sneaky!

If you're looking for some big, and by that, I mean HUGE, pieces of Obsidian, get your butt up to Glass Butte in Southeastern Oregon. We're talking about specimens as big as a basketball! Sure, there's a ton of small stuff, too, but there are also pieces that will knock your socks off.
I recommend going in mid to late spring before the rattlers start coming out of their hibernation dens. The best time of day would be around high noon when the sun reflects the most off of newly exposed edges. Sunrise can also be a productive time to go hunting, but relax and take your time. Springtime in the inter-mountain west can be mighty cold in the morning.
If I remember correctly, digging at the top of the butte is prohibited as it is sacred to the Native Americans of that area. Always show respect for the traditions and culture of others. Do that, and you will always be welcome to return again and again.
It has been more than 30 years since I collected from Glass Butte. Much may have changed during the intervening decades. It's a fairly remote location, and, as such, I would highly recommend contacting the appropriate authority about the accessibility status of the site.
    Happy Digging, y'all!!

Chances of you finding something that is worth as much as you paid, are absolutely slim to none. Not to mention it has to be hydrated as the opal has no lapidary value in most senses of the word.
That being said, I still feel its worth it just for the experience and the landscape adventure. Im happy i did it. But, don't expect to strike it rich. It sure looks pretty in water though. the people are kind and the landscape is phenomenal. I recommend it without any expectation. If you can afford the rockhound trip just for the experience, it truly is worth it. Much to explore throughout the area.

Interesting that you can claim petrified wood in Nevada. Also, I think that was tremolite (asbestos) not gypsum. It looked flexible which tremolite and actinolite are. Small gypsum crystals are somewhat flexible. Either way its asbestiform so be careful! Also, dude, I still got some new locations to take you to in Utah!

YESSSSSSSS ANOTHER UPLOAD also, 5:46 be careful around gypsum cause its a furry firbrous material which is microscopic. Basically, if you breathe it in accidentally, your risks of getting lung cancer gets higher so if you don't have a mask, just breathe slowly and don't get it too close to your face.

I went to a place out past Temecula to dig for tourmaline and it was pretty much tailings that we got to look through. I wonder if this place is same way. Where you were standing at the beginning it all looked like tailings.

It must have been a great year to go to that mine because we have gone there a few times and dug off the wall, and we didn't have those kinds of finds! However, we did ok off of the tailings.

Should come to Australia and check out the opal mining areas, maybe there's some open to public? i'm not sure. I do know you need some licenses to fossick or mine but they're not expensive. Heaps of other gem places through Queensland too, though it's a very large state so prepare to do a lot of traveling, lol.
