How To Pour Huge Fishing Sinkers Fishing Weights For Big River Catfishing

  • Having heavy weights in the boat for deep, swift water is a must for targeting the monster-sized catfish I go after. I've learned how to set up using basic equipment to form a garage assembly line to efficiently pour lots of sinkers in a days time using scrap lead-- including lead pipes, lead sheating, and tire weights.

    Great job guys. I do a lot of casting myself from fishing weights, bullets, shotgun slugs to cannon projectiles. One thing to note, please look for a heavy duty burner like a cast iron and use firebricks around it or a turkey fryer. Keep the hot lead closer to ground. If one of those cheap China burners falls over or breaks it will dump all the lead at your mid section. We all don't want that. You do too much good for the catfish world. Tight lines and keep up the great work.

    I like how you both show your trial and error mistakes then show what you did to get it right.

    My step dad my fishing partner still uses them big hooks he loves them and I was at ducks sporting good before I seen this trying to by stuff to do my own sinkers weight and they sold everything but the molds. Can't wait for your next video

    We use a turkey fryer burner for making beer. 10 gallons of water and grain are stable while stirring the mash, that’s 80+ pounds.

    To heat up the molds, just take a torch with map gas and run it over it for a few seconds and you will be ready instead of burning up all that propane. It works for me anyway. Do the same with my ladles and strainers. Also, when pouring big weights, the hotter the lead and the faster you pour, the better the results will be. Just my thoughts and what I have experienced. Started pouring my own weighted hooks and I save a ton of money even after buying the hooks in bulk. The ones I make will cost you 5 bucks for 3 weighted hooks at the bait shop, I can make 30 to 40 for 5 bucks. Also, started making my own lead bricks so when I pour I can use clean lead and save time and use just a few bricks if I'm not planning a big pour. Thanks guys!

    Are there fumes to worry about? Any health side effects from exposure during this process?

    • @davedean7499
      @davedean7499 ปีที่แล้ว

      Should wear a respirator (as per my doctor) you get more lead from the fumes than chewing on a lead bar. His words. I also smoke my molds for easier release.

    I didn't realize how much is involved with pouring sinkers. Great info, so you prefer the bank type sinkers over flat type in heavy current?

    • @epiccatfish365
      @epiccatfish365  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I like a bunch of different styles of sinkers- bank no roll, egg, pyramids. Different currents and depths get me to use different styles and weights of sinkers 👍

    With 2 years inflation the 12 oz sinker will exceed $2-3. I’ll check at my bait shop in the morning.

    A turkey fryer works much better and is alot safer than the setup you are running there. A face shield is something I wear when making sinners. Instead of dumping them out of the mold, try grabbing the sprue with a pair of wire cutters.

    I am planning on getting stuff to make my own sinkers. Is it better to just increase size of the bank sinker or switch to say a flat coin sinker when your current speed increases?

    • @epiccatfish365
      @epiccatfish365  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I just use heavier weights but coin sinkers sound like a good option 👍

      Really big bank sinkers are a different beast than egg sinkers under 5 ounces... especially without an electric temp controlled pot.

    Lead has tin and animony (I'm sure that's not spelled right) tin helps to fill out the mold the other hardness zink doesn't mix with lead just a little zink will curdle the whole batch. Don't try to mix it you may be able to cast zink by itself

    • @catfishheroes8390
      @catfishheroes8390 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Awesome info bud that's interesting!

    • @papawed489
      @papawed489 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just trying to help hate to see someone mess a shit ton of lead stuffs hard to come by. Some wheel weights and cast net weights are zink check with side cutters you won't hardly even dent zink.

    • @catfishheroes8390
      @catfishheroes8390 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@papawed489 I never poured sinkers before its actually pretty fun.

    • @epiccatfish365
      @epiccatfish365  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      See the second i say something ive heard from other people i end up repeating the wrong info... thanks for commenting so i know its not zinc in lead but animony 👍

    • @papawed489
      @papawed489 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes I started casting bullets last summer and had to sort wheel weights the info I heard said it was mixed with zink .Found out Thanx to youtube the truth and how to sort,side cutters are your friend also seen what zink does and the only way to discribe it is curdled ,and there didn't seem to be any way to get it out.

      Definitely.... i was trying to show the cheapest way and those little camp stoves at 24$ were definitly not the best compared to the old one i already have.
