The 1950 house at Maihaugen with the sink in the hallway, was used to empty filthy buckets of water, after cleaning the floors/house etc. and also used two clean your hand after using the toilet, mostly situated at the end of the hallway. Not every toilet had its own sink in those days. Very practical to keep everything clean and hygienic in the kitchen and the bathroom. I should know. I was born and raised in a home like that. 🙂

When mum and dad got together they rented two rooms upstairs in a fifties house. There was a sink and cooked on the landing as the owners rented two living spaces out. Wouldn't be allowed now. ;-)

As someone who lives in Lillehammer I’m actually ashamed to realise how few times I’ve visited Maihaugen in my life.
I’m actually going to take a trip on Shiblanser this summer with my family. The worlds oldest running steam boat. It was built in 1856 and it’s still sailing on Mjøsa every summer.

Lovely idea to bring all those old buildings together. Nice that you could really get immersed in it all. Hair wash with one jug. Most impressive! Good to hear your opinion of the roads and driving. Car parking was quite dear. But as you say, only here once 👍😊

The stocks (neck band) are for inattentive husbands Ken. Those that put cold water in the jug for hair washing. Good job you and I only need a wet flannel. Have you been to Singleton and the historic houses there… it’s much better than it was when I first went 30 years ago, and the repair shop on the bbc is filmed there. Posh cafe too, needs checking out by someone.😉

I do enjoy hearing the casual chit chat between you as you travel. Nice touch. The village with the old buildings/homes/churches was a winner. I love the fact that hundreds of years ago people were going about their daily lives like us yet it was so different. The 70’s house brought back memories for me since I was born in ‘62. Take care and be safe, Mary

Back in the 90s I studied modern history from 1700 onwards. Some of the classes were in one of the houses on Maihaugen. Talk about learning history - Norwegian history in such an historical place. Among the topics - Norwegian workers-movement in early 1900s. You can feel the importance in the historical buildings.

I have arthritis so find it difficult to wash my hair in the van, until that is I came up with this idea. Other people may find this useful too. We have the worktop that has the bowl in the middle with the cooker to the side. We got a bath towel and laid it on the worktop. Then cut out the shape of the sink and machine the cut to stop fraying. You then have a washing up bowl on the worktop filled with water that your partner uses to tip over your head whilst you lean over the sink being able to steady yourself on the worktop edge. No fear of falling over. Eithet you or your partner washes the head. The laugh comes when you hang the towel out to dry with people wondering what the hell you are doing with a bath towel with a large hole in the middle. Anyway for me it works and I feel secure leaning against the worktop. Standing in a shower is no good for me as I fear falling. This way its safe. Loved your video.

If you come in the summer you'll find night driving more enjoyable I think.
Moose on the road is mainly a problem in winter when there's deep snow in the forest.
Although animals of all kinds *can* show up at all times it's mostly livestock that'll show up in summer as they're not afraid of us while wild animals usually are.

They'd be covered in tar to preserve them.
Unfortunately the method to make the high quality tar used on stav churches back in the middle ages that allowed them to survive till today has been lost, so they need modern tar applied far more frequently to get the same effect.

That looks a lot like our boats here in Trøndelag, although we have wooden boards above the edge to shield against waves in rough seas and ours had sails.
And perhaps a *tiny* bit deeper.
But the idea is that when you reach speed you push the water down into a specific shape that kind of helps you drift less from wind hitting your sail from the side, as if your boat is deeper then it actually is.
I don't know all the details, but it's a pretty nifty design and the reason why the curve changes so much in different parts of the boat.

It is nice to see the history of a country, sadly I have tried Google maps and sadly it kept letting me down saying no satellite reception not good when in an area you are not familiar with took me miles out of my way going back to TomTom built into car and invest in a Garmin for walking Ken have you thought of a pair of night driving glasses.
Sadly it is about time Nissan updated the lights on their small vans my daylight running lights are brighter.

I agree you need offline maps as internet is lost so easily. I use the app Pocket Earth, not as good as TomTom for guidance but it has other functions we use a lot. I have not tried night glasses so I may give that a go. I need to uprate my lights really 👍

Try a company called Powerbulbs UK they may be able advise you I have been using them for some years now and they have supplied bulbs for my twenty four year old Daewoo Musso even listing bulbs not mentioned in the owners manual.

24.12: if anyone is wondering where the burnt marks on the table come from, it is the irresponsible use of disposable grills, some people unfortunately do not show consideration. it's a big problem, disposable grills should have been banned.

Yes I think they should be banned. People leave them behind and cause fires. At a time when we are trying to get rid of single use items they are very wasteful. They aren't really necessary.

If you ever do make it to Canada , all the round abouts are 40 kilometers per hour [25] and you do not use your signal ,
I got pulled over in Northern Ireland for that and she let me go , she said she had been to Canada LOL....eh

One of our bugbears is people not signalling at roundabouts so there would be a lot of swearing while driving in Canada 🤬😂

I agree with you regarding driving at night on the “wrong” side of the road. I’ve driven a fair bit in Australia and New Zealand and do all right but trying to drive at night is a nightmare, never again for this American. 😮

That was great fun! Quite a play house for a 3 year old, but it is certainly one that they could grow into. I enjoyed all of the houses. I was surprised by how very similar the houses there were to what I grew up with. While it is a small world, I did not expect to see such similarities back in the 50s. Actually, it is awesome! I also have trouble driving after dark, and my biggest challenge is oncoming traffic and turning- trying to see where my headlights haven’t reached yet. I make it a point to finish and stop before it is fully dark. That is not always possible when you are traveling and heading for a specific destination.
