I wish the band would re-record the earlier albums with the sound, equipment and production they have now on The Sciences. Vocals were never a strong point but Al sounds better now than he did back then too. When they do the older songs live they just crush it, sounds better than the studio versions.

Has anyone noticed that the black & white photos of the 3 band members on the insert with The Sciences is a takeoff on the time lapse exposure photos of Rush from the Moving Pictures album?

Thanks, Pete. Keep listening to more doom/stoner music since coming to SoT. So another band for investigating and listening. As always, appreciate these ranking the album shows - particularly for bands that it sounds like need to be heard.

Sleep and Neurosis the two heaviest bands I've ever seen live, just massively crushing. Makes sense that Jason Roeder was the drummer in both bands.

Oh man, you hit the nail on the head there buddy. I personally think that there will never be a band like Neurosis. I am 53 years old and in all my years as a metal fan, nobody does, or has done what they do. crushing, sooo heavy, emotive, apocalyptic as well as sublimely beautiful.

Sleep... the best at what they do.
    My current ranking:
    1. The Sciences
    2. Iommic Life: Clarity / Leagues beneath singles
    3. Dopesmoker
    4. Holy Mountain
    don't own the first one
Al's singing got better on the latest releases (after the reunion)

    4. Volume One (1991)
    3. Sleep's Holy Mountain (1992)
    2. The Sciences (2018)
    1. Dopesmoker (the full version, not the truncated "Jerusalem" version)

Often said that I prefer Al Cisneros' other band OM and his time in the supergroup Shrinebuilder more but a fan of Sleep all the same. Here's my ranking...
    Holy Mountain.
    Volume One.
    The Sciences.
    Dopesmoker.
    Jerusalem.

I've only heard Volume 1 and Holy Mountain, so far. I've always been a bit confused on the whole Jerusalem/Dopesmoker thing; which is the best version? And, I'd like to hear The Sciences as well.
I am a huge Matt Pike fan, though. Love all of High on Fire's albums. Also, he came out with an amazing solo project and album last year called Pike vs. the Automaton - which was sadly overlooked by much of the heavy metal public - but it's amazing!

Only 4 studio albums, but they are top notch! Stoner and Desert rock is what I grew up on in the early 2010s, while my contemporaries were still listening to Five Finger Death Punch, Metallica, and Iron Maiden. My first vinyl record was the 2012 reissue of SLEEP's Dopesmoker. I do in fact have Volume 1 on CD and vinyl. Extremely underrated, even in the Stoner Doom community. I didn't even realize you were into this stuff when I watched your channel years ago. Listen to any Electric Wizard or possibly Goatsnake?

Sleep alomg with Kyuss revitalized my interest in metal; I wasn't into the overproduced pop sound of mid to late 80s hard rock and metal. This is the stuff that brought me back into rock in the 90s.

Thanks for the ranking. One of the great Stoner/ Doom bands. My ranking would match yours. I don`t have Vol.1, but:
    1. Holy Mountain - Classic
    2. The Sciences - What a great return, this one can almost tie with Holy Mountain.
    3. Dopesmoker - I love it but it can be a challenge to get through at times.

  • @Diamond_Jim
    @Diamond_Jim ปีที่แล้ว +1

Let me preface my ranking by stating the obvious: I love all four of these albums!
    1. The Sciences - It is their best sounding album. It is a more mature and focused version of the band.
    2. Dopesmoker - It took me awhile to get into it. It isn't something I listen to often, but when I give this titanic release my undivided attention, it is a rewarding experience.
    3. Holy Mountain - Great songs stripped of some impact by hollow production.
    4. Volume 1 - Creepy, ominous, and raw. Highly underrated.

    • @howtovinyl
      @howtovinyl ปีที่แล้ว +1

Agreed 10000% with your assessment, and thank you for saying that about the Sciences...so few people acknowledge that its the first album of theirs that seemed to capture the huge sound that the band achieves live. As much as Sleep is one of my fav bands, the '90s production definitely negatively impacts those early albums.

    Hello Pete,
I absolutely love the channel and I'm an avid watcher of your shows with Martin Popoff, Album Ranking and New Album Reviews.
Love your ranking recently of Kyuss and Sleep but I was curious if you were familiar with the band Solitude Aeturnus? If so, what's your opinion of them and if not, I highly recommend them. I discovered them maybe 3 years and love the brand of doom metal they made.
King Buffalo has been a recent love over the last couple years as well. Great interview with Sean McVey.
My music collection has increased ever since following your channel. I discovered the greatness of Budgie through your channel and your shows with Martin have introduced me to more obscure albums.
Continue the good work. You've expanded my collection and my musical ear for classic rock, hard rock, progressive metal, doom and stoner metal.
    Thank you Pete.

I didn't think putting Dopesmoker at number 3 is contrarian. It's hard to listen to because it's basically one riff for an hour with a solo every 15 minutes, and not a whole lot of lyrics. It is one of those albums that requires you to be in the mood.
Sleep's Holy Mountain is easily my favorite Sleep album. Great stoner metal classic.

I see what you mean w/ Dopesmoker Pete, but I think it's such a monolithic statement - heavy rock worship taken to transcendental extremes - that I almost feel I have to rank it number one. Al took that approach to really interesting places w/ Om (who I like way more than HoF).
If you're into the debut than you should 100% check out the Melvins, esp Ozma, Bullhead and Lysol, a very big influence on this scene. Good luck doing a ranking w/ a 34 album discography though...

Pete, when did you become a Sleep fan? Did you, for example, own Holy Mountain in the mid-'90s? This is one of those bands where I'm always curious when/how people became aware of them. It often feels as if most discovered them in retrospect, drawn in by the reputation of Dopesmoker in particular.
