Fans of Kyuss should check out Vista Chino. That was basically a reunion of the classic Kyuss lineup minus Josh Homme. Solid album that continued the Kyuss stoner rock sound. Additionally, the Kyuss / Queens Of The Stone Age EP should be required listening as well.

I don't know if my story warrants being told twice, but it be what it be.
I still remember going into a record store and seeing "Blues for the Red Sun". I had never heard of the band, but the album title was cool, the cover art was cool, and I was pretty sure with a name like Kyuss this wasn't going to be yer mother's blues. I own most everything with John Garcia on vox now.

John Garcia was in so many great Stoner bands such as Unida, Slo Burn, Hermano, and much more. John is most definitely one of the most underated voices in rock history. If he was mainstream he would be one of the greats.

I used to love him as a singer until I had seen him perform with Unida acting like a jerk and leaving the stage early. After that I couldn‘t stand listening to him sing until a few years ago. Don‘t think his voice is that great though compared to guys like Ian Astbury who has a similar vibe but is a much better singer imho.

    • @marcbasil
      @marcbasil ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@wernermoritz882 astbury was not better than JG. With JG, the thing is that, one can only listen to his prime stuff. The rest of it isn’t good, including his vocal work with Kyuss. His prime was 1997-2002. In 2002, he tore his larynx, and his prime ended. So, the first Hermano! album & the UNIDA material. That was his best work as a vocalist

Very, very hard to choose between Blues... and ... Sky Valley, they were cooking on those albums, telepathic musicianship from these super talented kids who learned to play together - the secret to real rock greatness.
Agree that Wretch gets a bit overlooked, great energy on that one, kinda taking the vibe on Black Flag's Slip It In but getting a really heavy groove going - I always dug it.

Greetings, Pete. Thanks for taking the time to redo this video though the soundless version was entertaining, too. Well, the silver-lining - at least for me - of you having to redo the video was allowing time to go listen to some of the band's catalogue. Only had time for the first two albums but will go back for the other two. The first album did come across a bit raw but that did not diminish its listening enjoyment. Will be curious to see how the last two feel after this. Thanks once more.

Finally someone who shares the same ranking I do with the Kyuss Discography! I really don't understand how people like Sky Valley so much. It has some killer moments, don't get me wrong, but it's also a very uneven record that hasn't aged well for me and I seldomly manage to listen to it in one go. Wretch. Also worth having is their Muchos Gracias compilation. I know you're not a big fan of Queens of the Stone Age. I think you re-evaluate them. Kyuss were the best, and the “Big 3” are impossible to rank, as they’re all very different, considering they all had different personnel, and are therefore all special in their own way. …ATCLT is arguably the heaviest rock production job ever pulled off. Reeder absolutely towers over that album’s aesthetic, and Goss allowed him to template the unbelievably impenetrable wall of bass that defines that piece of work. It’s also arguably Hommes finest hour solely as a guitarist. Also how are you leaving out the Into The Void EP…?

The “Big 3” are all equal. It’s impossible to rank them. BFTRS literally redefined how people viewed heavy rock music. Homme melded Doom metal with Alt rock on that album & forever changed the game. Also, the band was more dangerous & unpredictable with Oliveris volatile punk edge. Reeder is one of the most talented & prodigious bassists to ever live, but he couldn’t replicate nicks hardcore/punk aesthetic. Nevertheless, the band after Scott joined became arguably the greatest & most perfect hard rock unit known to man. It’s impossible to pick. And the Into The Void EP was absolutely freaking iconic

I've always mentally pronounced Kyuss as one syllable KYOOS (rhymes with noose) instead of KI-us. But I've never talked to anybody who knew who they were.

Verified pronunciation from Spotify bio and Wikipedia - Pete's right. Though I'll probably continue to mentally pronounce it my way in my head 🤓 because I'm just kind of nerd...

It's not that hard...magazines, review sites, TH-cam, Bandcamp, music forums...just a few of many ways to discover stuff.

I'm surprised to see Wretch so high. It is great but I put Circus higher. For me Size Queen is the moment I crank the CD even louder and put my cheap car speakers to the test all the way through Spaceship Landing.

All about Sky Valley for me in regards to Kyuss…my old friend Catherine Enny managed their career early on…the other three records are mostly meh for me overall, IMHO Homme would go onto bigger and better things before long

    Best to "worst" for me:
    1. Sky Valley
    2. Blues for the Red Sun
    3. And the Circus Leaves Town
    4. Wretch (the only one I don't like)
