Anyone into this stuff is already plenty familiar with the more notable and oft cited releases, so I'll try to offer a few lesser known gems, or at least ones not mentioned as often ...there are so many to choose from nowadays, and that's coming from one who grew up in an era where Doom Metal bands could be counted on your fingers. These are mostly older titles ...there's a lot of good newer stuff out there too.

I think Bell Witch- Mirror Reaper is as classic as a five year old album can get. I think it's one of those albums that will stand the test of time. People will still be talking about it 30 years from now.

@@RMFlagg I know, my remark was more about it being talked about in 30 yrs as a classic album and the same with the new one's part 1 & 2. I really don't hear too many people now saying Mirror Reaper is a classic. It's really good but I hardly ever play it, and even seeing them play it live was a chore.

i liked Black Sabbath but couldn't be bothered with stoner/fuzz/doom during the '90. That changed in the end of the 2000's after hearing Colour Haze and attending the Roadburn festival.
Now my favorite albums post 2000 are stoner/fuzz/psych records like SLEEP The sciences, ELDER Dead roots stirring, SLIFT Ummon and the SHRINEBUILDER album. And i play Wo Fat all the time. I only like my doom when it has touches of psych and stoner (like the drumming more) . My most recent purchase in that genre is SAGE Say goodbye. Fun stoner/doom.
Today i'm off to the Sonic Whip festival. Colout Haze, Slift, Lowrider, Psychlona, Causa Sui and King Bufallo as the highlights 🍻

  • @MalditoMendoza

A pioneer of Doom Metal (and Stoner) that's often overlooked but I think should be considered essential listening to anyone getting into the genre is Paul Chain, specially everything he released under the "Paul Chain Violet Theatre" moniker. He even recorded stuff with both Lee Dorrian and Wino. His discography is massive, but the earlier stuff is the best.

Good call! As a teenager in the '80s I was into underground metal, but my first love was Sabbath from when I was a kid in the '70s ...found my way to all of the seminal Doom Metal bands of the '80s but was never able to (FINALLY) hear Paul Chain Violet Theatre until the internet came about. Pagan Altar, too ..those were two bands whose records weren't available at all in my neck of the woods growing up.

Lots of great suggestions. I'll dig into it. Don't know exactly why but I never dug deep into more "traditional" doom although some records that I absolutely love are very doomy. One example ? Ahab-The Call of the Wretched sea. Absolute masterpiece.
I am also very much into sludgey/doomy/doom-related bands that usually fall into the so-called "post metal" bin: like Neurosis, Isis and i think they are great, don't know if anybody from SOT is into those bands (and the vast swarm of clones...)

First... it's nice to have a different, female vibe with Karen. Second... I'll mention Camel Driver; instrumental, German, doomy, fuzzy, psychedelic, circa 2010-17. Third... the most captivating band/project I've heard in MANY years. I think their mix of traditional metal & doom riffs and instrumental modern prog metal might split them between camps that feel the need to stay in a specific camp. Again, metal/doom riffs with stripped down djenty accents twist and groove into a bit of complexity and virtuoso melodic and creative soloing. SCOREDATURA (with an 'E') circa 2016-2022.

Nice job covering most of the early classics! I was cleaning up in kitchen and may have missed a couple, but not sure if y'all mentioned The Obsessed?
Brendan Radigan, formerly of Magic Circle, currently in Sumerlands, has been singing for Pagan Altar the past few years. Saw them at Hell's Heroes V in Houston this year! Sounds like you'll need to do an episode on 21st century doom like Magic Circle, and as you mentioned Khemmis, Pallbearer, along with early Spirit Adrift, Witch Mountain, Castle, Uncle Acid, SubRosa, Avatarium, Messa, etc.
Fun fact, the only time a (partially) doom album ever topped the charts was Black Sabbath's 13 in both the UK and Billboard charts. In reference to their single "God is Dead?" I wrote about that and a brief history of doom called Doom Goes Pop: God May be Dead but DOOM Isn't.

Just of the top of my head, this would be some of the most essential doom albums, covering some different grounds within the genre:
    Cathedral - Forest of Equilibrium
My Dying Bride - Turn Loose the Swans
    Candlemass - Epicus Doomicus Metallicus
Warning - Watching from a Distance

Loved the show and looking forward to it here on out. I like Doom but have never properly got right into it. I'm wary of a lot of the newer bands because I don't care for the funeral Doom, the stuff that moves purely at 3bpm and I don't like overly guttural vocals with it either. So I'm looking forward to recommendation of bands more in the Sabbath vein of Doom which is what I like.
Gonna throw out my own recommendation for that in Magic Circle. I've got their self titled album on vinyl and they are totally Sabbath worshippers. The whole album has the same guitar tone as Symptom of the Universe, which is my favourite tone of all time! I'm just so annoyed that by the time I discovered then they had already split up, but the lead singer is now with Sumerlands and actually done some stuff with Pagan Altar so a nice link to this video. I really want to get their other 2 albums on vinyl in the future but it's pricey to do just now since I can only import here to the UK.
If anyone knows any decent online suppliers for Doom vinyl in the UK (other than discogs) would love to know!
Anyway, keep up the good work and looking forwardto seeing more every month.

Doom is passionate music with passionate fans, and for music that is known for being utterly miserable, it's great to see how much enthusiasm it can actually generate. Loved seeing that in this video from both pete and karen.
I do think Dopethrone is the most "special" Electric Wizard album. They're always lumped in with stoner bands, but they have a vibe that's for me very different...and that vibe is...8evil*. Whereas most stoner music just makes you want to trip out and smell the flowers, Electric Wizard are like a depraved, drug-fueled apocalypse. After certain experiences in my life, with a person who took the subject matter of this band a little too much to heart (and I don't mean weed-smoking), I now have a hard time listening to them, but this Dopethrone thing, it's a monument of darkness and doom full of odes to nuclear destruction, the dxarkest of weird tales, barbarity. The nasty vocals taht sound like they're being wailed into a broken microphone are not attractive, but they suit it perfectly well. Love the riffs, the distortion, the very organic-sounding drums and the way they were produced.
Everyone forgets that there was a third Witchfinder General album that came out in the late 2000s or so. I forgot about it too. That band was lightning in a bottle for a very brief time only. Something about it just shouldn't have worked, but it does. The vocals are terrible and for every few great songs like "Witchfinder General", "Invincible Hate", "Rabies", there's something like "I Lost You" and "Music". The vocals are kind of terrible. But...man, they almost do taht Electric Wizard thing where they manage to tap into the heart of something that's a little crazy and unhinged. Think it's probably the drugs.

Most of your picks are also my picks, but let me add a couple more...Solitude Aeturnus "Through the Darkest Hour", Solstice "New Dark Age", Witchcarft "Witchcraft", Reverend Bizarre "In the Rectory of the Bizarre Reverend", Saint Vitus "Die Healing", Warning "Watching From a Distance" and Burning Witch "Crippled Lucifer". This episode was great, congratulations!

For me the only doom band I listen is Sorcerer. With this new show I’m curious to check some other bands in that style. And Karen is is a ray of sunshine in this show I like her enthusiasm. 🎉 Some people here who likes Sorcerer, just curious? The band’s influence by Candlemass and Solitude Aeturnus Saint Vitus that I’ve never put the time to listen to and of course Sabbath.
