    This video was a great help, clear and concise instructions! I have an issue, I can lock down the Tilt axis, and it stays in any position I move it to(perfect), but when i balance the Roll and Pan they always move back to the center position I balanced it to(parallel). So if I balance the roll so the bar is parallel to the ground then move the bar down(or Up) it will swing back to center. Is this an issue? You've earned my sub either way.

    Interesting method.
    But - and I don't have a gimbal so i'm guessing - I would have balanced it in the opposite sequence. Start with the
    adjustment atop the tripod and work your way toward the camera's baseplate.
    Have you tried that way, and what were the results?

    • @HaiTran
      @HaiTran  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +spikey 27 Are you suggesting doing pan, roll, tilt then baseplate? I've really only ever balanced the gimbal in the order that I've done it in the video.
      Although it's easy to balance, I feel that since the pan requires you to lift the gimbal, most people would do it last. I personally leave it last because it's easy and doesn't require much thought. I focus on doing the hard stuff first.
      I balance the roll first because as I've said, if you don't, while balancing the tilt and baseplate, the camera will be bouncing around, making it harder to balance.
      The tilt and baseplate is next because they correspond with one another and generally take more time. I assume that this is where most people will be having difficulty balancing the device. Once this is done, everything else is pretty self explanatory.
      If you work at it backwards, I feel that it would be doing pretty much the same thing that I did. The only difference would be doing the pan first.

    Great video! I'm struggling with the balance of my Crane 2 with a 5D Mark III and a 24-105 lens. I can balance it perfectly level but when I move it to a different position it's supposed to stay in that position - but mine just keeps flopping back to its levelled position. I've recalibrated it. Once I've balanced, with the camera facing forward I can point the camera down and up and it'll stay put like it should do, but if I roll to either side, it always rolls back to centre. Is it me or have i just purchased a faulty gimbal? If you need a video for understand better my issue I can send it to you. Thank you!! :)

    • @HaiTran
      @HaiTran  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      From what you said, I don’t think it’s the gimbal. Since you had the same issue with the tilt and then was able to get it balanced properly. It sounds like it just needs to be balanced further. If you can’t get it, just try turning the gimbal on and using it. See if it even matters because very often you don’t even need to get the gimbal balanced to he point of it staying in every position. You just need it to the initial balanced position.

    I bought this for the savings and haven't successfully balanced my DSLR on it yet. And when I do, I'll have another balancing act with lens changes and my other cams. Do two-handed Ronins give users this much trouble?

    • @HaiTran
      @HaiTran  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Unless you get a custom gimbal made for a specific setup, balancing is going to be something that you’ll have to learn to live with.

  • @paulomateus3083
    @paulomateus3083 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great tutorial! Just a stupid question, after balancing it for the first time, you don't need to do it every time you want to use it, as long you use the same camera with same lens and the quick release plate, right?

    • @HaiTran
      @HaiTran  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes. As long as the setup doesn’t change and the balance isn’t accidentally changed, you can use the gimbal without having to rebalance.

    My biggest problem with this gimbal is I cant see my screen!! Like wth? The back arm completely block it’s screen and I have to hold it somewhat sideways and I sacrifice some stability.

    • @HaiTran

      Manufacturers make gimbals with an angled roll arm for a reason. You bought the wrong gimbal for your needs.

    If I was going to set out to demo this process and did it as well as you've done, I'd be like SO pleased with myself!
    Don't have one yet - my 5d2 with the 28mm Pentax prime I want to use for this comes to a bit under 1200g - how does that compare to your Sony set up? No way I can afford the bigger heavier Crane... but I'm a little concerned that's pushing things a bit.

    • @HaiTran
      @HaiTran  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Even though all of these gimbals give a maximum load capacity, that number can only be achieved under certain situations. I can tell you that the same set up shown in this video but with a cage is pretty much the absolute maximum that I can get to work with this gimbal even though it is under the maximum capacity and at that, the gimbal isn’t even balanced properly. It is just balanced enough to function. If I were you, I would invest in the Crane 2 just to have the flexibility to really balance a variety of setups.

    I use the ZY Play app and cant get the gimbal to finally stop at the final point. It will instantly jump back to the default home position. Example i set point A to focus on a vase and then point B to a window. The damn thing wont finish and stay at that window. It will immediately JUMP to the start position. Any help from someone here who knows how to make it stay at the last waypoint/position being set ?

    I am struggling to keep the camera positioned any way i want "after" balancing it. I've been at this for a day and am not sure if its because the weight of the camera is too small or i may have fucked up the motor. gear: a6500 with a 10-18mm.
    please help if you can

    • @HaiTran
      @HaiTran  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      That set up should provide enough weight for you to properly balance the crane. If you have Instagram, DM me a video of your balancing and I'll see if I can figure out the problem.

    • @ThorCaes
      @ThorCaes 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am also really curious what would be the problem here. Since I can basically balance it. Not being able to keep it positioned. However, whenever I turn it on. It works as it should.
      Just the positioning after the "balancing" does not keep it the same when pushing it a bit forward or backward.

    • @HaiTran
      @HaiTran  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +ThorgalCaesar It works when you turn it on even though it’s not balanced because the motor is working to correct it. It’ll work, but it’ll just put more stress on the motor reducing your battery life and probably the general life of the motor in the long run. If you have a problem with balancing, DM me a video of what’s going on through Instagram and I’ll see if I can figure it out.

    Hey! Have you tried balancing the a7rII with it's battery grip? I'm curious to see if it would work as I'd much rather have the battery grip on without the hassle of switching batteries.

    • @HaiTran
      @HaiTran  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've tried this but would not really recommend it. Even if you balance it to an acceptable point, there is no top clearance so you'll have to watch how you move the handle. I'm a battery grip user too but have learned to just not use it when I'm using the Crane.

  • @saiyan_princestudios9790
    @saiyan_princestudios9790 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    so i just got my gimbal, and granted its my 1st night trying, but after trying for hours i can't balance it at all. it keeps rolling forward (lens goes down) I'm using the fuji xt2 and light lenses like the rokinon 12, fuji 18-55 and the 23 1.4. none of them work. I adjusted the side screws and the baseplate like you said but no matter what i do it kept rolling forward, best i could do eventually was to just get it to go forward (facing down) just a little bit. but never level.
    Eventually i gave up and tried to add the battery grip, figured that had a lot of weight on it, maybe that would help, well sure did now the thing would roll backwards (lens facing up), no matter what i did from there it would always go backwards. Until I tried the bigger heavy lens the 16-55, and sure enough it would roll forward again. But couldn't ever adjust it to just be balanced either.
    Small and light lenses or big and heavy, nothing seems to help, grip or no grip. Extremely frustrated and really hope my gimbal isn't broken. its probably user error but dang this is so hard.

    • @HaiTran
      @HaiTran  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If the setup is falling forward/ backward, the first thing you should be adjusting is the baseplate. Move it back and forth to compensate in the direction opposite of the fall. The second thing to do is adjust the vertical arm. If you drop it all the way down and the setup still falls forward/ backward, then it definitely means you have the baseplate setup improperly. Adjust the baseplate then and raise the vertical arm. Keep down this until you can't raise the vertical arm anymore. Adding more weight wouldn't be how I would approach this problem.

    • @saiyan_princestudios9790
      @saiyan_princestudios9790 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      eventually got it to work, took hours to balance. IDK what i did. lol. I balanced the base plate like a million times (it felt like) before and it didn't matter what i did. I guess eventually i got lucky.

    • @HaiTran
      @HaiTran  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hopefully, you can figure it out because you're not going to want to use it if it takes hours to balance it every time.

    • @HaiTran
      @HaiTran  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Unfortunately, I don't have the GX85 so I can't accurately answer your question. I do know that some people have had issues with the a6300 being too light so there is a chance that your setup is too light.

    • @HaiTran
      @HaiTran  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      As a reference, I can balance the A7rii/A7sii with the Zeiss 16-35 F4 without a problem. I feel that the a6500 and A7rii/A7sii are close enough in size that you should be able to balance it with the 16-35 without a problem. Just keep going at it 👍

    • @YassineSamar
      @YassineSamar 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      yeah i will keep going and hope the adapter will help. Many thanks once again !

    • @HaiTran
      @HaiTran  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is just me, but I don't think having the adapter will really help at all in balancing. It just makes mounting the camera faster. If you can't balance it without an adapter, you won't be able to do it with an adapter. If anything, the adapter will only add to your max payload.
      Also, you're welcome and glad I could help you.

    Do you think the zhiyun crane V2 would work good with a sony a6000+ 16-35mm canon lens w/ adapter?

    • @HaiTran
      @HaiTran  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don’t have this setup so can’t concretely verify for you. I would say that I’m concerned because with the adapter, the setup would be front heavy and there may not be enough clearance to actually balance it properly. But again, this is just an assumption.

      @HaiTran  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      From personal experience, there are 3 possibilities: improper balancing, the setup weighs too much for the motor, or poor walking/holding technique when in use.

    Do you need the little tripod to balance it?

    • @HaiTran

      No, it's just for convenience and so you don't have to lay the gimbal down whenever it's not in use.

    • @HaiTran
      @HaiTran  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Various things can contribute to that problem. You may have just not balanced the gimbal properly or the problem could also be that the setup is too light. It's hard for me to say definitively without actually doing the balancing.

    do you need to calibrate it in the app before you do this? I completed all your actions and it was balanced fine. Then I calibrated it in the app and once it turns on it loses balance now and joy stick keeps spinning? Is the app calibration even necessary?

    So I've heard different opinions on the subject of lens/camera stability in addition to the gimbal... like ois or ibis. I have ois on some of my lenses like the 18-55mm fuji lens, would that help with stability or make it worse and get in the way?
    I was using my rokinon 12mm f2 lens and it did a good job mostly but still some shake. maybe its just user error and how i walk. Sadly I don't think i can use this lens for vlogging it seems like i was always out of focus bc of min. focus distance when i had the camera flip around to selfie mode. but for everything else it worked nicely. maybe a good wedding lens once I get more practice, maybe try the heavier but theoretically nicer lens my 16-55 2.8 zoom.

    • @HaiTran
      @HaiTran  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's typically recommended to turn OIS or IBIS off when on a gimbal but I never do. You'll just have to do your own testing and see what works for you.

    • @eliovisita
      @eliovisita 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually you can use the rokinon as vlogging lens, just make sure to close the aperture to f/4 or 5.8 and set your focus in infinity that’s it! I using a manual lens as vlogging lens!

    Hi. I have a similar set up with the a7rii and 28 mm. The problem I am having is that the base plate hits the bottom axis when rotated.. I feel I have tried to adjust it so that it doesn’t hit but then it’s out of balance. I’d love your help on this. I’m getting frustrated :)

    • @HaiTran
      @HaiTran  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I regularly use the A7RII with the 28mm so can say that if the baseplate is hitting the pan axis, your setup is too low. Raise the tilt and readjust.

    • @ericaoldham3906
      @ericaoldham3906 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @HaiTran
      @HaiTran  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You should not need to have it all the way up. It won't balance properly. It doesn't make sense how the baseplate would hit the bottom pan axis (where the handle is) if it is all the way up. DM me a video of the situation on Instagram @TheUpperLeftUSA

    I have the Sony A7s ii with the 24-70mm lens but having trouble balancing on the Crane 2. Do you think my lens is too heavy for this product?

    • @HaiTran
      @HaiTran  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Zhiyun Crane 2 has a maximum payload of 7 lbs, which is more than enough for the Sony A7SII and 24-70 f/4 or f/2.8. Your problem with balancing is likely not a weight issue, but that the combo is too long for the setup to actually balance. The gimbal might not have enough clearance to actually get the combo to the proper balancing position. I don't have the Zhiyun Crane 2 so can't verify this, but this is a problem with the Zhiyun Crane V2.

    • @travelpockets
      @travelpockets 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I see. Thank you so much for the fast response and clarifying my issue. I might look into the lens you have or just return the gimbal. We'll see!

    • @HaiTran
      @HaiTran  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You’re welcome. I would suggest you invest in a small lens. You’re going to have issues with a long lens on any single handed gimbal. It won’t balance properly until you go to something the size of a DJI Ronin.

      LOL. That was something the beginners themselves do but i was asking experts here or people who own it. I spoke to the manufacturer head office and they are like eeeeeerrrrr bluuuuuuh blaaahhhhh. He didnt know anything. He was telling me try xyz. I said that didnt work. He goes > ok try zyx. I said that didn't work either. He goes > Ummm that means both no working, we will try other method (in the same broken English), did you try to see on youtube, many videos there sir. That's why im here asking some people who actually know :). The head office knows sales and where to buy it. He Goes > Where did you buy ?, how much you pay ?, you could have bought in our dealer sir. Why you bought amazon ?. (his dealer tries to sell it without official warranty at 30% higher than amazon price, with no returns i believe lol, at least amazon had 10 day return policy). When i ask him to just help me troubleshoot and get it to work. He goes > This is outdated model sir, that's why it have no drivers, no support. WTF ???? I paid and bought officially with bill, he agreed its covered under warranty, but no support to get it to work etc bec its an outdated model.

    • @HaiTran
      @HaiTran  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s unfortunate but at least they’re covering it under warranty.

    • @mgr5550
      @mgr5550 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cover what under warranty. How do i know if its even broken to send it to these muffs to tamper and open it up and try to repair it. How would you feel to send back a brand new unit to be repaired and given back to you. Once repaired you can expect nothing but trouble in the future. For all you know, its not set properly or its a setting problem, in which case my gimbal will be unnecessarily opened and fiddled with, put back with screws missing etc just to get it out and be done with it. In my country those are the standards with every warranty ive ever experienced. I maintain them brand new and after service they come back with scratches here and there. Scratches from the screw holes, which imply the technician made them. Ford does that to my cars regularly. It goes in for service, meaning oil top up and that kind, it will come back with dash board scratches, scratches on my fender and they'll argue that it was already there.

    • @HaiTran
      @HaiTran  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s a cost to play the game and it sounds like you already know that. You choose to use the warranty and you gamble with the possibilities. No one is forcing anything on you. If it were me, I would’ve returned the unit at first sign of issues. I wouldn’t even have bothered with the warranty if I bought a new unit and was within a return window.

    Hey man I’m using the Sony a6000 with Sigma 30mm 1.4 it’s always front heavy no matter how far up or down my axis is, any help

      Have you tried moving the setup back towards the roll motor?

      @basvisuals348 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Upper Left USA yes

    • @HaiTran
      @HaiTran  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      From experience, I would say that because the lens you're using is relatively small, it shouldn't give you much trouble with being front heavy. If your setup is far back towards the roll motor and low on the tilt motor and you're still front heavy, something is wrong. It takes a lot of weight to push those two axis to the max. I had heavier setups on my Crane and I didn't even push them that far. The only two points of adjustments that would affect the issues that you're facing are the camera/baseplate position and the height of the tilt arm.

    • @basvisuals348
      @basvisuals348 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Upper Left USA it’s fine I got it solved I just taped some weights to the top of the camera, it finally balances, I’m guessing the weight distribution from this setup by itself isn’t exactly made for this gimbal, if I put a mic on it then it would work a lot better, but thanks for trying to help

    • @HaiTran
      @HaiTran  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've been thinking that over the past day. The only thing I could think of was that your setup wasn't heavy enough. But that didn't make sense to me because you said that you had the tilt arm low. Which in theory would only be front heavy if you have a setup that was heavier than the gimbal could balance. A really light setup would need to have the tilt arm all the way up. Either way, glad you were able to solve the problem. Have fun using the gimbal 👍

      The Upper Left USA hi man, it only tilts forward with my larger lens (12-60) it wouldn’t tilt forward with my 25mm. Very annoying. I’ve now balanced it on my larger lens but when I turn it on the camera just flies all over the place. Idk !!

    • @HaiTran
      @HaiTran  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      If it's tilting forward then the only logical answer is that the camera isn't pulled back far enough towards the roll axis motor. How high you have the carriage on the horizontal will also affect this.

    • @phillipsfilms2429
      @phillipsfilms2429 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Upper Left USA no! It will not tilt forward. Matter what I do, there’s not enough weight in front

    • @HaiTran
      @HaiTran  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is extremely difficult to not have enough weight in front because essentially all camera setup with a lens will be front heavy.

      and , once i set the mode to tilt locked, i adjust my camera to the to highest angle (camera looking up) through joystick, my camera drop back to flat level immediately , no matter how man times i tried , is this something to do with battery power?

    • @HaiTran
      @HaiTran  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      From what I see, he has his tilt axis way too low. Lowering the tilt axis is really to compensate for a heavier camera. If your base plate is all the way forward and your camera is tilting back like the video you sent, you need to start raising the tilt axis. The higher the tilt axis, the more you'll need to move the base plate back though.
      If you can't figure it out and you have Instagram, DM me a video of what you have going and I'll see if I can figure it out for your case. @TheUpperLeftUSA
