Scotty, I'm an owner of one of these cars. Once you get it running correctly, and perform service at regular intervals religiously, it is reliable. Let one PM slip and you'll be in a world of hurt. Easy to work on? um no....any work underneath the intake requires removal of said intake. there are many failure points on the coolant system. The PCV system requires an oil catch can setup. The older Gen injectors should be pulled and replaced with new gen injectors. If miles are 100K, replace turbos.
I had a '91 300ZX Twin Turbo, 5 speed transmission during my college days. The engine itself actually started production from 1989 and Scotty forgot to mention the twin turbo models have 4 wheel steering aka Super HICAS. It was an awesome sports car but 2 things I didn't like was it was a timing belt driven interference engine and to change all the vacuum and heater hoses next to the firewall was a pain in the a$$
@@skylurbishop8407 they actually used them. If you peel the thin carbon fiber strip off the top of the "diablo" headlights you'd see Nissan motor corporation.

I've owned my 300zxtt for over 20 years. I replace the original 1991 motor with a 1995 JDM twin turbo engine which came with the new style injectors. I've also added a few other mods. The car is a pleasure to drive.
In 1991, I had no interest in cars, but when I saw this in the dealership window, I dragged my mate down to have a look. 1980's cars were ugly. This still looks great 30 years later.
Bought my 92 TT in 93 in Canada. Got 88,000 km on it. Chipped, exhaust, and KN. 391 hp at the wheels. Appraised at $35,000 CDN in July 2019. Nice hearing Scotty taking nice about this model : )
@@8latt don’t want to burst your bubble, but since you’re 17 now, you understand why it’s not the best first car. I almost bought an old corvette for my first. But then I remembered insurance exist. Get something cheap to drive and save till you’re older.
That “Turbo Noise” sounded like electrical noise/interference from the alternator coming through a speaker! lol iffy grounds or something up with the stereo or possible bluetooth adapter lol That’s not what they normally sound like! 🤣
@@ryanmckenna5254 Don't be silly. The noise was exactly in line with engine RPM.. Turbos not only have lag (even tiny ones), but also don't build boost with light revs... Thus, that was not turbo noise, but electrical interference noise as bbrex suggests.
"Easy to work on"....famous last word. I owned one myself and had it pushing 600whp. But man I had no knuckles left after working in that engine bay that literally had no space to work in.
Word of warning for the 300zx tt. They have to be maintained and the engine has zero room to do work in it. We have one and it's nice but a head ache when we have to do engine work. Timing belts are the worst. Ours has bigger stillen turbos and intercoolers and a bunch of other mods. Goes through tires pretty fast with 600hp in it. Not so bad with lower boost though. Going to be selling it soon.
Hey Scotty. Great clip. New to your posts. I owned/leased a '93 Cherry Red Pearl Nissan 300Z twin-turbo. So sorry that I didn't buy and keep the car. They were tough to get in '93 and my buddy who was a Nissan dealer back then had a tough time getting hold of one for me. They had a "HICAS" steering system that really hugged the road. You didn't sit in the car, you put it on. It wrapped around you. That car gripped and hugged the road and wouldn't skid an inch making a fast turn. The ride WAS hard, especially in the sport mode. I guess some loved to feel every bump. The T's were beautiful when off but taking them off was a PITA. Each T was stored in an individual leather bag. They had to be stacked in the rear and strapped down to keep them from sliding around (they were heavy). Forget it if it started to rain. The other problem was, back then, the torque was great enough that the tires would wear down to the bare tread quickly. In '93 times, both my rear tires cost $500 to be replaced. I also heard that after a period of time, although the car was built really well, the turbo chargers would break causing engine damage. Overall, it was well built, heavy, solid, excellent trim, amazing car and blazingly fast for the time. The main competitors those days, besides the Corvette, were the Mitsubishi VR4 and Dodge Stealth, both of which were really cool but you don't hear or see anything about them anymore. Keep up the great reports. You have a new subscriber.
Actually they started in 1990, I had a white on red leather. The steering wheel was the last without an airbag. It was a 3 spoke wheel, and a beauty compared to the bulky airbag wheel. Maybe my favorite car I ever had!
The Z32 was released in 1989 as a 1990 model. I have a 1989 TT with 50,000 miles on the clock. Forged built with lots of upgrades, including 8 piston breaks. They are stupid fast, unique and like nothing else. Its good to be different.
This car is the encapsulation of "I like my cars how I like my women, 29 years old and extremely fun but filled with issues. Don't be fooled. These Z's at this age are not reliable or easy to work on compared to other cars especially under the hood. The engine compartment is tight and you have to take apart other parts of the engine to get to other parts you easily could in other cars. I had one for 5 years back in the late 90's into the early 2000's and don't get me wrong this car was fun and it feels different and faster because you are lower to the ground but they can have some problems.
Noel Madera- I agree! My 90 had hicas, but my current one is a 91 slicktop (base model) And that didn’t come with hicas. I didn’t know that until I bought it.
I was downtown last year and I could have sworn I saw you driving around... It was over near the America tower, now I'm positive it was you Scotty. You're the reason I became a mechanic.
i have a 90 NA and i love it original engine and transmission shifts beautifully 150k miles and i see no signs of it stopping go buy one before it’s too late
I couldn’t stop laughing when you described the z32 as “cheap to fix”, “reliable”, and “easy to work on”. But after seeing you had some 101st airborne division stickers on a couple of your cars and you also like 300zx’s (and you’re in Texas too), I’m loving the channel.
300ZX TT or skyline GT-R since it’s legal there now (but damn expensive) is always very wise to have. They’re like investments, collectors car as they say. Really love the 300Z! My only problem last time was their engine bay, it’s so cramped can’t reach stuff easily. 😅 Try the 90s Gtr next time Scotty, they’re like Japan’s national sportscar because of their records and achievements in Japanese motorsports, simply most successful one out of Japan.
*_I JUST WENT ON AUTOTRADER AND PURCHASED A 300ZX PER SCOTTY'S ADVICE._* *_I'VE ALSO PURCHASED 5 OTHER CARS BASED ON SCOTTY'S PREVIOUS RECOMMENDATIONS, AM CURRENTLY $323,000 IN DEBT, AND MY WIFE IS LEAVING ME. BUT, IT'S OK BECAUSE YOLO._*
Goes to show you he hasn't been around Z32 and definitely hasn't worked on one besides an oil change or two 😁 but people believe anything this guy says smh
That 300ZX is still more car then most people can handle. Big thing with that Z is how balanced it is. It is reasonably quick but also has the balanced handling to match it's quickness. Many sport coupes today may be faster in a 0-60 romp, but they fall behind this old Nissan in road manners and handling. Performance is more then just acceleration times. I amazed to hear Scotty talk positive of anything from Nissan.
I hate working on mine. Despite that though, I can't see myself selling it - I pray I never have to sell it. I love driving that car, even if I barely drive it now. I baby that thing so much lol.
@@joshuathomas3500 Hope I am not too late. Do not buy this as a first car. I bought this as my true first car. My actual first car was an 04 Lancer but I got it for free, fixed the bent valves then sold it to buy a 300zx 2+2. Id highly recommend buying a cheap 4 cylinder car then buying a 300zx shell and saving money here or there to do what you want with the 300zx. The 300zx is a weekend car.
I was 17 when I bought my na. Its been 12 years. 200k+ miles. Its a truly reliable car. Only issue is serviceability. Its not easy to work on, but I learned a lot owning this awesome car. If you do your own(painstaking) repairs, its is not a money pit!
It’s so weird seeing Scotty not only buy but REPLACE his Celica with a 300zx. It’s like the only 90’s JDM sports car that has the reliability of a modern ford truck. (Not to mention they’re difficult to work on)
I love how you talk about reliability then you tell us it's on it's second motor! I had a 1981 280zx with the straight 6 and it was bullet proof! Almost 300K miles, original engine, ran like a top!
Guys please remember Scotty is a different bread of mechanic . He’s been doing it years . While some of us haven’t so when he says it’s easy to work on it may be easy for him but for the average mechanic it can be a pain in the butt .
I really wanted one but it was way out of my price range. I bought a new 92 Miata instead which was my daily driver for 25 years and now my nephew is driving it.
Exactly where my civic is going when he gets his license and i teach him to drive standard transmission. Gonna let him destroy the clutch and have it rebuilt when he graduates.
A few thousand dollars well spent under the hood and that thing destroys a lot of these newer sports cars. Big community here for the z in the Houston area we love to have ya with us.
8:38: "Just take a garden hose and flush it all out". That's not a good idea, there's a reason why common procedure demands using distilled water to flush a cooling system out, and not tap water or from the hose. Same reason why that person was worried about Dexcool in their system.

I remember seeing these things on the road when I was a kid in the early 90s. I thought they were so cool looking.. Would love to own one now.
Good luck finding one that hasn't been abused!
You can find a good amount of them still. Unlike the 240sx. Just going to pay more for them.
You could say that about any sports car. It's the risk you take. Just about everyone I've known that's bought a r32 skyline has blown up.
I got a 280zx for $650... It wasn't running, but overall it is in amazing condition and worth much more...
You can find a lot of great ones around if you are willing to pay a little.
I bought a bone stock 300 tt with the 4 seat option for 1500. Lucky me.
Daily Driver? Easy to work on? Reliable? lol...Scotty is in for a surprise :D
It was an awesome sports car but 2 things I didn't like was it was a timing belt driven interference engine and to change all the vacuum and heater hoses next to the firewall was a pain in the a$$
Yes, "the price is getting right high now" I agree, especially after this video was uploaded. Thanks Scotty.
I bought mines for 1,200 from a auction 3 years ago. Someone just offered me 7k for it. I’m not selling but it is going up in value
Fun fact: late 90s Lamborghini used those headlights on their latest generation of the Diablo. :)
Fun fact they actually copied the z series head lights for the headlights of the diablo
@@skylurbishop8407 they actually used them. If you peel the thin carbon fiber strip off the top of the "diablo" headlights you'd see Nissan motor corporation.
@@skylurbishop8407 Didn't copy, they outright bought the lights from a parts store and used them in the Diablo. But being egotistical, they couldn't live with the fact that they didn't design the lamps, so they covered up the incriminating evidence.
Scotty: 'The AC is working!'
Also Scotty: *Soaking wet*
Texas: “Yeeehaw!”
" Hey the AC is working !!! " and the sweat is dripping 2 minutes later from poor Scotty :))))))
He turned it off so we could hear him better
@@Big.W. we heard him fine with no noise when he said AC still works!
Welcome to Texas where AC never makes a difference
Yes sir, dry off after a shower, go outside and dry off again from the sweat. Lol i miss South Texas
That's Toyota Celica '94 angst sweat. 🤣😆😋
I've owned my 300zxtt for over 20 years. I replace the original 1991 motor with a 1995 JDM twin turbo engine which came with the new style injectors. I've also added a few other mods. The car is a pleasure to drive.
my favorite 😍 Z
These are the only cars ive worked on for past 15 years. Im hooked line and sinker...love these beasts. Great video
First you say - ‘It’s got a replacement engine’ and a few minutes later you say - ‘these cars don’t break down’. I don’t understand your logic Scotty.
Lol a 30 year old car with force induction turbos.
I haven't understood his logic since I started watching him and I'm not even a fan.
Simple, its an import.... Theyre on a different curve with this guy....
I own a 91 charcoal pearl slicktop 300zx (meaning no t-tops) its 1 of 86 ever made in that year, near perfect condition and I love daily driving it!!
How do you find out how many were made each year for different trims?
In 1991, I had no interest in cars, but when I saw this in the dealership window, I dragged my mate down to have a look. 1980's cars were ugly. This still looks great 30 years later.
Almost though Scotty was gonna toss that T top like he toss's plastic that pisses him off lol
Lol 😅
2:30 That's not the turbos spooling, thats a bad ground and it's coming from the speakers when the radio is on.
thanks for the possible future tip, im importing one of these right now :D
Exactly...... Turbos spinning, geez..... LOL all the folks that listen to this guy preech....
Bought my 92 TT in 93 in Canada. Got 88,000 km on it.
Chipped, exhaust, and KN.
391 hp at the wheels.
Appraised at $35,000 CDN in July 2019. Nice hearing Scotty taking nice about this model : )
Pre-Renault Nissans were awesome.
No they were not. They were unrealiable and hideous that's why they were going bankrupt when renault rescued them.
@@jarnoob Yes that was the case, Nissan tried to merge with Ford who said no.
My favorite car of all time. This was my first car. Thank you Scotty for increasing the value on this car.
Is this a good first car? Im sixteen and am very interested in getting one.
Yep, thought the exact same thing...
Haha yes, that's what my n/a sr20de sounds like. Budget powerless supercharger
That’s exactly what it was
Those weren't very big turbos, so a lot higher pitch sound than you're use to, compared to the big tornado makers Tuners use now
@@ryanmckenna5254 Don't be silly.
This makes me glad I still have my 1990 twin turbo! Good job Scott.
And apparently lots of engine heat over the years kills all the plastic and rubber components.
What you asking 4 it?

Hey Scotty.
I had white on black 2+2 NA but put some red Bride Zeta III's in and swapped a TT engine into it as well. amazing car wish I never sold it.
Filming while driving a stick shift. What a legend
YOU FINALLY REVIEWED A 300ZX
"reliable sports car" oh Scotty, you know a hell of a lot, but you're gonna have to learn a thing or two about Z ownership...
Whoa whoa whoa... What z do you have? My 280zx is extremely reliable
About to amend that comment next month. Rest assured
They're reliable just a little expensive with the replacement parts
Ive heard its a cramped engine bay. Especially the one u see here
Reliable, but definitely frustrating to work on! No space to do many quicki night time jobs
I love my 91 Z32 but it’s a pain in the butt to work on
Same here... hicas needs to go too
Noel Madera- I agree! My 90 had hicas, but my current one is a 91 slicktop (base model) And that didn’t come with hicas. I didn’t know that until I bought it.
I found it funny when Scotty said it's easy to work on. The engine bay is a nightmare to work in.
Tightest engine bay ever. Especially if you have the twin turbo.
TuneLow PlaySlow - yeah it gets messy under the hood. Only thing that’s easy to change is the fuel filter, and that’s it
I was downtown last year and I could have sworn I saw you driving around... It was over near the America tower, now I'm positive it was you Scotty. You're the reason I became a mechanic.
i have a 90 NA and i love it original engine and transmission shifts beautifully 150k miles and i see no signs of it stopping go buy one before it’s too late
I love these old Datsun/Nissan Z cars... a late-friend of mine had a 240-Z that they bought brand new... those were the days...
I miss my 87. First time inside it, it felt like I was inside a fighter jet. So many lights and buttons.
I love my 87. I can’t wait to start building it once my 90 is done.
love the Celica. BUT I LOOOOOVVVE the 300ZX!!!!!!!
I couldn’t stop laughing when you described the z32 as “cheap to fix”, “reliable”, and “easy to work on”. But after seeing you had some 101st airborne division stickers on a couple of your cars and you also like 300zx’s (and you’re in Texas too), I’m loving the channel.
Yeah... I think Scotty tends to oversimplify everything to Japanese = Good, Everything Else = Bad
I’ve had mine for 8 years and counting. TT of course. And after doing the maintenance on it. It never broke Down on me.
0:29 ** the twin turbo's were produced from 1989-end of 1998**
Production 1989-2000.
It's a bummer that those VG30DETT engines are belt driven interference engines, pray your timing belt don't break.
Israel R as long as you keep up with your maintenance the car will last
Remplace every 5 years or 60000 miles... Im 21 and owned one for 3 years and I just to my maintenance now since i fixed its previous owner negligence
Go guess why the original engine got fried and now on #2.
Mine is due already. Only drove 9k miles in the last 7 yrs
@@Pennychaser1 yep better be preventive than blowing up that VG

300ZX TT or skyline GT-R since it’s legal there now (but damn expensive) is always very wise to have. They’re like investments, collectors car as they say. Really love the 300Z! My only problem last time was their engine bay, it’s so cramped can’t reach stuff easily. 😅
Try the 90s Gtr next time Scotty, they’re like Japan’s national sportscar because of their records and achievements in Japanese motorsports, simply most successful one out of Japan.
Yes. He should do a video on the R32 skyline GTR. Imagine if they put the r32 mechanicals in to the beautiful zx tt.

Such a beautiful car but it’s got Tightest most cramped engine bay ever.
Also including the notorious head gasket issue.
@@victordelcid7902 let it go, its good for the car community. this car needs more credit, gets overlooked or forgotten about too often.
That 300ZX is still more car then most people can handle.
Big thing with that Z is how balanced it is. It is
reasonably quick but also has the balanced handling
to match it's quickness. Many sport coupes today may
be faster in a 0-60 romp, but they fall behind this
old Nissan in road manners and handling.
Performance is more then just acceleration times.
I amazed to hear Scotty

This was when Nissan was great.
Had a 1992 and loved it. One of the greatest Japanese engineered sports cars of the nineties.

Id highly recommend buying a cheap 4 cylinder car then buying a 300zx shell and saving money here or there to do what you want with the 300zx. The 300zx is a weekend car.

Hey Scotty, from one tech to another. Welcome to the nissan family. Looking forward to more content on the Z. Keep up the good work!
Last year I bought a 75 Z from the original owner. Yeah it needs restored, but I love it.
I was 17 when I bought my na. Its been 12 years. 200k+ miles. Its a truly reliable car. Only issue is serviceability. Its not easy to work on, but I learned a lot owning this awesome car. If you do your own(painstaking) repairs, its is not a money pit!
When the Z's were new they were muscle car killer's especially corvettes.
Not no regular z an it depends on what vette your talking about.

It’s so weird seeing Scotty not only buy but REPLACE his Celica with a 300zx. It’s like the only 90’s JDM sports car that has the reliability of a modern ford truck. (Not to mention they’re difficult to work on)
Have you ever had a show on a Toyota MR2? Great little car. Those early "Z"s were not that expensive.

Looks like a fun car to replace the celica
"Typical Japanese car." Hilarious
I really wanted one but it was way out of my price range. I bought a new 92 Miata instead which was my daily driver for 25 years and now my nephew is driving it.
Exactly where my civic is going when he gets his license and i teach him to drive standard transmission. Gonna let him destroy the clutch and have it rebuilt when he graduates.
TheSlimeyLimey that's quite a testimony for reliability.
LES , Miatas are very simple and reliable. My 01 had 230k km before I sold it for my 2011 Miata.
A few thousand dollars well spent under the hood and that thing destroys a lot of these newer sports cars. Big community here for the z in the Houston area we love to have ya with us.

That's not a good idea, there's a reason why common procedure demands using distilled water to flush a cooling system out, and not tap water or from the hose. Same reason why that person was worried about Dexcool in their system.
