“Has Richard Gadd Slightly Gilded The Lily?" | Mike Graham QUESTIONS Netflix Baby Reindeer Series

  • The fallout from the Netflix drama miniseries “Baby Reindeer” continues after “real-life Martha” Fiona Harvey joined Piers Morgan on Uncensored.
It’s caused so much of a stir that John Nicholson, SNP MP has written to Netflix to tell them they have to substantiate the series' claim that there was a court case involved.
Virgin Radio presenter Steve Denyer says: "It was those words, ‘this is a true story’, that made me watch it and drew me in.”
Mike Graham wonders if Richard Gadd “maybe invented bits of it".
Fiona Harvey has said in a newspaper that she wants £1m from Piers Morgan for the interview.
Mike says: "She's probably sat there thinking everyone is making money out of this."

Fine print is all nice and dandy but they should never have put in print - in the opening episode the show claims: “This is a true story”.It's not a true story, it's 'Based On...' blah blah and this is where the trouble starts. It's misleading and why Fiona Harvey, guilty or not of being a stalker, has a case.

Stories are changed to protect identities, so the complaint is basically a complaint that they did things to protect her. What a lot of people are overlooking is the fact that the events that are depicted in the series are virtually contemporary. They only happened six years ago. I think it's reckless and you're asking for trouble when you release a series so soon after the events it is based on.

  • @0Mitzuio

I think they did their best to disguise her identity while keeping important character traits intact. They changed her name, which is the least one can do. Her appearance, which happened to resemble hers, is important because it tries to evoke a feeling of pity and, at first glance, appears to be harmless. The character being Scottish adds familiarity and provides reasons for him to have talked with her, while her being a lawyer highlights flaws in the system regarding stalking, showing how someone familiar with the law can exploit it. The fact that both the character and she have a history of stalking emphasizes this point. One thing we can argue about is the language used, especially the sexual innuendos. While it's his story and she undeniably said those things to him, he should have known that using the exact same phrases she said could lead to her identification, making it a double-edged sword. Television shows often take creative liberties, with dramatizations and deviations from strict accuracy being commonly accepted. Whether minor details like offering tea or alcohol are altered, or significant plot points like imprisonment are fictionalized, artistic expression is prioritized over factual accuracy. Shows claiming to be based on true stories often blend fiction and interpretation to capture the essence and emotional truth rather than strict historical accuracy, and it’s unlikely Netflix would have produced the series without verifying the existence of all the emails, voice messages, etc.

From my standpoint, both individuals are deeply flawed and equally desperate for attention. He is gullible and eager for validation, much like her. However, she is portrayed as overweight and less successful than she initially claimed. He welcomed her attention and even exploited it, giving her false hopes. This raises the question: why does the narrative seem to invalidate her self-confidence and feelings entirely? Even if her actions were as the show portrayed, she clearly needs help. One has to wonder if he would have reacted the same way if she had been a beautiful woman.
When he discovered that she was not a lawyer as she had claimed, he quickly turned the narrative in his favor. He cast himself as the innocent victim of her stalking, feeling embarrassed by her laughter and uneasy about her constant emails. It’s important to remember that he too was seeking attention, likely to boost his struggling career as a comedian. This shift allowed him to depict her as a wholly negative and harmful influence in his life, conveniently ignoring his role in encouraging her initial interest and obsession.
In reality, both parties share responsibility for the toxic dynamic that developed. He tried to take advantage of her infatuation for personal gain, enjoying the attention until it became inconvenient for him. When her obsession crossed boundaries, instead of addressing it honestly and responsibly, he portrayed himself as a victim, focusing on her looks and lack of wealth to undermine her credibility.
This interpretation suggests a more complex interplay of manipulation and desperation between the two, challenging the simplistic victim-perpetrator dichotomy promoted by the show. Both individuals engaged in harmful behavior, driven by their own insecurities and desires for validation, making the situation far more complicated than it initially appears. Wheres the mental health awareness? Yes it exists and it’s exactly why people with this disorders need help instead of being demonised on social media

Once they could not find any evidence of the stalker having being convicted/ jail time, it put real doubt in my mind about Richard and Netflix’s account. One thing that struck me about Richard, is that he was desperately trying to have professional success. And I just wonder if Mike is right. He would have to come up with a very compelling story with a good ending-satisfying to the viewer, for Netflix to buy his story and produce the TV series. And now he has gone silent when asked about why we can’t find basic evidence of jail time for the stalker. So I think his account is a mixed bag. I think some of it is true. Maybe most of it. But this has greatly discredited him. And he shouldn’t be silent. It only makes it worse. For the life of me, I don’t know why Netflix didn’t have their lawyers vet his claims more carefully, especially as they were going to put the label “true story” on it!

Do people really think a giant like Netflix would be so stupid not to cover themselves? She has no case! Trying for her 15 minutes of fame. She obviously didn't do well at law school. Piers etc know this graphic was there but chose to exploit an obviously psychologically ill woman. Why didn't she come out earlier when the play was running? She sees £s from this - she's got no hope. Richard needs to stop hiding, man up and do some interviews about this.
The Cohen brothers (Fargo etc) put the "Based on a true story" slide at the beginning of all their stuff, it's a running joke. Look at all the pre-screening work The Blair Witch Project did, creating the website, releasing teasers, plotting the whole myth - brilliant work (for such a crap movie lol). The Netflix publicity department must be sooo happy with all this; couldn't buy this publicity. If Fiona wants finacial compensation, she DOES in fact need to prove the character is her, even though she's denying most of it. 😳🙄😉
