    Today on the channel, I am driving the Genesis GV60. The firm's first ground-up EV built on the E-GMP platform that also underpins the Hyundai Ioniq V and the KIA EV6. How does the Genesis differ, and is it worth considering over established rivals?

    11/10 very soothing intro thank you very much
    Also, GV60 is actually rather interesting. From what I can see they nailed the luxury brief really rather well. And it actually looks interesting, something we desperately need on the road. If they can sort out the charging issues (which is not strictly a Hyundai/KIA/Genesis problem) I'd take one over any Tesla in a heartbeat. Or whatever the electric equivalent of heartbeat is.
    Then again heartbeat can be resuscitated using electric current so heartbeat it is...

    Thanks Jay. The Genesis brand is very underrated. I have driven a few and their quality is close to Lexus. MB and BMW really have to lift their game and MB has to address their customer support if they want to stay relevant.

    Really enjoyed this, I normally don’t bother with EV reviews, but there was something about the look (particularly inside) that gave me the same feeling as when I first saw an LS400 all those years ago. The amusing start of the video reminded me of a very funny Two Ronnies Sketch, too! Thanks Jay

    Just wanted to say great review , I have had my GV60 now for 16 months I live in BC.Canada so I have driving the car in all types of weather in the 33.000 klm I have not have any problems love the car . The big plus here we have lots of FREE fast charging the range is much better than Genesis claim the best I have done is 537 klm or 333 miles but that was in Eco mode , to be fair most of the time I am getting around the 430 klm per charge . I agree if you are looking for an EV do check this one out. Thank you.

    Hmm, had my current Pixel 6 for over 2 years, USB-C cable is just fine. Likewise the Motorola I had before that for 2 years the USB-C cable was fine. USB-C is normally extremely robust - far more so than Micro USB. Are you sure you just don't need to clean it out? They can build up lint in them so you do periodically have to blow or pick it out, and the symptom that the lint has gotten too dense is often the plug won't hold anymore - I usually use a toothpick as the wood shouldn't damage the contacts - then it's good as new for the next 6 months or so.

    Get something thin like the end of a staple, shine a light in your usb c port and scrape fairly hard around the thin plastic bit. Chances are you'll get loads of fluff out and then your charger will click into place like it used to. That's worked for me several times now anyway, albeit with a google pixel.

    • @DirectInput
      @DirectInput 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      This. I recently bought a S22 Ultra for very, very cheap just because the USB-port "didn't work". With the back side of a needle and two minutes of patience I had it working flawlessly :-)

  • @aljowen
    @aljowen 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    All you need to do is clean your USB C socket and it will likely work fine again. They get filled with lint from your pockets, get a thin bit of plastic and give the inside of the connector a good scraping out, you may be amazed by how much gunk comes out. You will likely also find the connector then feels new again.

    Hi James, I really appreciate your honesty. For me you’re the go to place for reviews who don’t just praise tech or german badges. Personally, my concern is evs are too heavy. We need solid state evs/fuel cell & petrol for future.

    • @jamesonslow

      Too heavy for what? What are the effects?

    • @jamesonslow
      @jamesonslow 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @KentBuchla More mass requires more force to accelerate/decelerate/corner, so not only will you burn through more power getting it off the line, you'll generate more brake dust when slowing down and more tyre particulates when doing any of the above, not to mention the effect it'll have on the tarmac. The immense torque these things generate (and the encouragement this gives people to use it) is partly to blame, too.

      So, just like a Range Rover or Land Rover Discovery (as well as great many vehicles of this size from other manufacturers) except that EVs are not burning up fossil fuels and polluting the atmosphere quite as much as these cars.@@jamesonslow

    • @jamesonslow
      @jamesonslow 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @philhartley7551 Yep. For what most people tend to use them for, ICE SUVs are also unnecessarily massive. I can accept a shift to EVs provided we're not only offered 2+ tonne SUVs, and provided competing technologies such as hydrogen are given a chance.

    GV60 owner here - AC Charging problem - too late now as you will have returned it but by default it will be set to priority charge over an odd time period, and the priority charge thing is crap. You need to change it to Off-peak only, or Always charge, then it is fine. This seems to be an issue across the Hyundai/Kia/Genesis brand. Since I got mine the settings improved as you can now define a charger period, where as at first (and this was the same for the Hyundai and Kia I looked at) you had to set a depart time in one menu then a charge length in another.
    With the panoramic roof, I'm still in two minds about having chosen it. I have the light interior and so from the front don't really need it, also in the winter, if open you feel the cold through it (not when closed, it is very well insulated).
    There are a number of things you missed which help with the price. 5 years free servicing, free loan car, 5 years roadside, 5 years discount with Ionity (which has just gone up from 24p per kW to 58p, but still cheaper than the standard discount of 61p).
    I would say you also have your PA, but they were hit and miss (mine was fine) and with Genesis being moved in to Hyundai there's a question mark over how things will be done going forwards, nothing has been clarified but rumour has it there will be a small PA team for existing Genesis owners, but anyone else will be through their local Hyundai place. Still to be confirmed though.
    Over all I've had my RWD (with most packs, but not digital side mirrors) for 15-16 months now and I have no regrets. It is supremely comfortable and I moved to it from a Lexus GS450 H (last gen) and before then a well sorted Citroen C6 with a specialist garage looking after that.

    Great review, FYI with the Ioniq 5 and EV6, you don't get anywhere near the top end of the charging capability-unless you precondition/heat the batteries. To do this in an Ioniq 5 at least-is to set your fast charger destination on the gawd awful builtin sat nav (doesn't work on android auto) about 30 mins this time of year means I can get about 225kWh at my local ionity.

    James…a fascinating report on this car because I test drove one and had oddly differing views compared to you. The interior has merits but looked too much like an American speed boat or a dated US motor caravan. The shiny bits reflected everywhere and the leather felt like plastic. The brakes…I thought them awful like a switch..on or off and I am Mr Delicate..my Discovery Sport at 40,000 miles is still on its original pads and only c40% worn.The steering was super smooth but felt like it was not connected to anything at all and to drive…it was ding dong quick!! In fact I still liked the car but not as much as I expected. I didn’t keep it for the full 2/3 hours offered but took it back because it just felt good enough but not special….ans it’s final failing was the total lack of ANY dealership or support except for the reassurance that a man would drive from London to pick it up, fix it and drive it back to me afterwards. As for resale value…..almost nothing….in fact Genesis put their ex demonstrators on Autotrader and hope…for quite a few months…that somebody might buy one presumably without ANY support! However….you did escape one thing…the utterly, utterly useless, stupid, dangerous and thoughtless electronic door mirror screens which are the most crazy technology thrown at us so far! Positioned exactly under my hand as I hold the steering wheel, too small an image to work out what was happening and deeply unnecessary.
    So I hate it…..but no…I STILL like them and actually saw a real owned car on the road last week..the first one ever. It looked interesting, different, nice…and got me wondering again. Yes….if I get an EV…..I will go straight to Kia for an EV6GT!
    Thank you for reading…..😃😃😃😃😃

    A friend of mine bought one recently and took me for a brief ride. Wonderful Interior, as James pointed out. Stylish looks and, as his was also the top of the range model, plenty of get up and go. But it is expensive. Here in Australia is around the $150,000 mark. Similar in price to the UK with our currency exchange rate of 2:1. I still don't get the point of EVs. They're relatively expensive, heavy, have limited range, and still have a big carbon footprint in the manufacturing stage. Plus they occasionally catch on fire.

      Charging curves are very interesting and not often reviewed on short term reviews except for the likes of Out of Spec and Bjorn Nyland who both provide a good insight into the differences between manufacturers and models. For many cars, assessing their capabilities when at 50% charge is not great as you need to see how it performs from, say, 10% to 80%. Many people, such as Tesla owners, adopt a different charging regime to make best use of the faster charging (low down in the pack in a Tesla) where as others, such as Audi E-tron drivers often charge for longer (because the more even charging curve means you get a lot for longer).

    Thank you james, you are the only other person i've seen online slating USB-C, regardless of speed, the mechanical engineering of the connector is awful, they are so un-positive and wobbly, the tolerances and insertion depth are terrible, and most stupidly the (weak AF) retention latch is innthe port instead of the cable! So when it wears and gets weaker you need to replace your phone (or car...) Instead of the cable. Micro B was a piece of shit too but at least it had a strong latch and it was on the cable end. Lightning is slow AF and doesn't have enough contacts, but the actual design is great, excellent positive bite and cable-end retention again. Honestly USB-C is an awful awful standard. Especially in professional usage, all modern gear uses it and it's so bad it falls out all the time and thats unacceptable in pro scenarios (camera tethering, audio interfaces, DJ controllers, VR headsets (not pro but fucking important to not suddenly cut out), displays, music)

      If you're talking about hydrogen, even an ounce of research reveals how little that makes sense in terms of cars and green credentials.
      You lose energy at every step of the process, the infrastructure is unproven and expensive, and the cars are still very difficult to manufacture.
      For electric cars, you lose less of the energy you generated in the first place, and the environmental impact of the battery is easily absorbed by that increased efficiency.
      Obligatory disclaimer: I still think interesting ICE cars should exist, but maybe we can make all the boring cars most people buy more eco-friendly so we can still enjoy the fun ones on weekends.

      @@matthewwatt2295Yeah, the infrastructure for hydrogen is crazy. Desalination plants, water splitting plants, giant trucks carrying compressed gas, every petrol station modified to hold tonnes of compressed gas.
      And if you burn it like this guy is suggesting then you'll be at around 15% of the efficiency of a BEV. Which means we'd have to basically coat the entire country in wind turbines.
      And after all that you still end up with NOx emissions into built-up areas.

    One thing is almost certain with respect to this and indeed all evs. You and other TH-cam car content creator are not going to be having one of these in your garage when they are 25 or 30 years old. The battery would have degraded to the point of making the car un drivable and a replacement if available would be multiple times the vehicles then worth, the electrics especially those screens would have packed in and be impossible or prohibitively expensive to repair etc etc. Which alone makes them utterly non environmentally friendly, saving the planet type vehicles.

    • @matthewwatt2295
      @matthewwatt2295 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The materials in that battery are a lot more recyclable than petrol fumes! Plenty of businesses springing up to recycle these things, or repurpose them as energy storage for businesses and homes.

The science shows it's possible to recycle the majority of an EV battery, the economics should improve as it scales - this never happened on the same scale for phones and laptops because they're much more labour-intensive to dispose of.
