What size net? Great video, glad you shared your knowledge
Thanks brother!!! I use 10’ radius 5/8 mesh. Used to use larger mesh, but we were getting full Christmas trees too often. When mixed bait sizes are around 100 gill-netted baits are not good for anyone involved 😆.
Hey Mike the net link is 3 years old can you post a new link? These nets aren’t cheap so I want to make sure I buy the right one! Thanks
@@gulicio1m293 I appreciate the heads up. here ya go!!
www.blackpearlcastnets.com/product/cg-xts-invi-series-cast-nets/
You want the Gold 1.65lb per foot.
10ft “length”
5/8” Mesh.
The Gold is the middle weight option. You can go heavier or lighter if you wish. I prefer this gold1.65lbs.
Thanks for your support brother!!
What kind/make/type net are you throwing?
Mike, how large a net would you recommend for a beginner? 10’? Is 12’ too big?
I would still start with a 10 which is plenty big and work on mastering that size. An 8 or smaller is a different method in most cases. Once you master the 10 you can throw pretty much anything.
what is the deepest water you toss the net. I fish out of Boston, and the water can be 40 - 50 feet deep in the harbor. Is it worth tossing the net? Thanks Mike
Good question. Actually I faced the exact same issue when we fished in Boston with Joe Marciano. 30-40 ft deep is EXTREMELY difficult for adult Menhaden. (The net is 50% closed or more after 20 ft. )They are just so fast and alert. The only way you can really do it is if the schools are thick from the very bottom all the way up to just below the surface. So thick that they can’t flee because they are crowded in.
That dog is like.. bro give me one.
Yeah man 😁
Khub Sundor lagcha very thanks
What net do you recommend
It’s very hard for me to recommend anything other than the Black Pearl INVI nets. They are so comfortable to throw. They are expensive but definitely worth it. 👍👍
What size net are you using?
Mostly 10ft radius
Thanks Mike. Great information I become a fun of you videos. I’m new on Stripers fishing
Hey Mike Gio here from Western Long Island sound, sometimes we run into bunker schools a quarter of a mile wide. is there such a thing as netting too many and not physically being able to lift the net what do you do then. My arms are about 1/10 the size of your buddy. Thx
I know what you mean. We see that sometimes too. You can do what I did on the clip right after the underwater footage where I brought it up section by section or you can rail dump some. Grab the horn of the net and shake half out but you have to do it quick, since they swim the net into a tangle after a while. I also keep a small 6ft net for that, but I rarely end up using it.
@@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS awesome thanks as always
Wow, just wow. Does the diameter of the circle matter? My pontoon is like turning a semi truck. Thanks for all you give us!
I’ve actually done this with a 25ft pontoon boat believe it or not. So yep! It works. Glad you liked it! Thanks!
Hi Mike,
How are you doing, You are doing good fishing I like it.One question please,
What does the like Bunker? I will try to catch live Bunkers in Hudson River NJ, here is some fishermen catching with triangle hook drop and pulled.
Maybe I can use some corn or bread crumbs, what do you think?
Thank you!
Hi brother! Bunker are filter feeders so they won’t bite anything. Snagging and cast netting is all you can really do. 👍
@@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS Thank you so much.
@@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS Thank you so much.
Do u have any advice for catching bait in the Chesapeake bay? I’ve been a largemouth bass kinda guy for most of my life, have a couple buddies that run charters that I fish with but I finally got my own boat this year and really wanna get into some rockfish this year. I’ve never actually went out to catch bait on the water or anything like that. Just curious what type of things should I look for to find bait in the bay? Docks, bridges, pylons, Bowie’s, rocks, that type of thing. I’m young and don’t have that much experience doing it all on my own. Out of Stoney creek on the upper bay, right next to the key bridge. Although I have no problem running the bay down to the bridge or trailering the boat far. Appreciate any type of pointers or advice u could give me. I’ve watched a shit ton of ur videos getting ready for this year and I’ve learned a hell of a lot man. Appreciate any knowledge u can give
My question is related to the Sea Pro 248 DLX. I'm a 2019 248 DXL owner as well and I'm not sure I understand how the bait well controls are suppose to function. I do allot of live bait fishing so I depend on the bait wells to keep my bait alive all day. I flip both console switch's too the ON position to fill the live wells , both forward and aft. Once full with the lids closed they just run over into the boat. I don't find any way to re-circulate or airate my bait fish. I know you're a Sea Pro sponsored angler and have much more experience that I do. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
If you have the dual version you will have 3 position switch’s. Up is fill and down is recirculating. I added a Venturi valve to my stern well to aerate. It’s super easy to do. I can send you a short video showing how I did it by email. Mikesmedley9@gmail.com
You have to adjust the flow so it stops just short of over flowing with the wells open to use the pressurized feature. If the pumps are over flowing strong with the lids up you will never be able to stop it even with 2 guys standing on the lids. The pressure will lift you right up. The pumps are very strong. I set my drains partially open so I can run ALMOST wide open pumps and the level slightly over flows with lids open. Then I fine tune at the valve to get it perfect. I rarely keep the stern well pressurized. It’s more needed at the bow since it takes a pounding. Hope this helps. There are a few well configurations depending on how it was ordered. Let me know if I can help further. Feel free to email me anytime. 👍👍
Thank you for going through the trouble to show us all how you do what you do.
I’m glad you like it brother!! 👍👍
Gonna have to try this on mullet
Hey Mike would this work for shad in deep water on a lake
Maybe. If the Shad are on the surface it might help. I haven’t tried it. These Bunker are so dang fast it’s amazing.
@@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS Thanks that is the problem I am having they are popping the top but when I throw I may only get 5 tops. I have been watching Sonar for Dummies and has helped me to understand mine a lot better.
PapapillGaming glad you like it brother!! Give it a try! Let me know if it helps. I honestly haven’t tried in freshwater water.
@@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS Will do.
Another great video what size net you using and where can I buy one. I need a good net to catch shad for hybrid stripper fishing
Thank you!! 👍👍👍😁😁😁This is the best net you will ever see. It is the easiest loading and opening net I’ve ever tried. amzn.to/2XGNj2y
That is just sick netting!! Awesome can’t wait to try this!! We’re on the Connecticut shore line on the Sound! Plenty of bunker!
Thanks brother!! Always try in the shallowest water you see them first. The deeper it gets the harder it gets.
Will this technique work for gizzards?
Most Gizzards you can find shallow, and even deep Gizzards can be easier to get, but I have had cases where 5-6” Gizzards where on the surface in summertime and they were very hard to get close to before dispersing. I didn’t try this technique, but I imagine it will work on any surface bait that is too fast to net.
Nice video. I see large schools of larger white bait or Greenback out off shore in the Gulf of Mexico down in the Everglades, and can’t seem to catch them. Would this be the way to go down here? It would be in 15 - 20 feet of water or so. You can see them coming, but when they get to you they disappear under the boat. Frustrating. I would be throwing a 10’ 3/8 with 1.6 per foot. Thanks
Absolutely!! There are several types of Menhaden there. The Gulf and Yellowfin Menhaden. Pogies.
Mike tried messaging you but can’t figure out how to on TH-cam lol. Finally got my own boat. I’m ready to start trolling and live lining for stripers, but where I fish there’s a lot of catfish that’ll take the same bait as stripers, even big live eels. I wanted to ask you if there was anything I can do to try to hook up to more stripers and less catfish lol. Thanks in advance!
Sure. Where are you fishing?
Mike Smedley I fish the Susquehanna river below the conowingo dam. When I go on my boat I plan on fishing by the quarry where the water drops to about 80ish feet or possibly where it opens to the Susquehanna flats. Last time we were there we kept marking schools of (I assume) striper at anywhere from 40-60 feet. Live lining eels, got a couple striper but probably a ratio of 10 blue cats to one striper.
Man I just got myself a Simrad Go series. You got them things Dialed In. Working on learning mine
This is cool, I have never seen this technique being from south Mississippi. Always good to have a new trick in your arsenal.
It’s the only way to get these fast baits in Water deeper than 15ft. They are amazing!
Great tip, thanks for the help
Thanks Ron! Appreciate it brother!
when i first moved to the northeast the first time i EVER got seasick (after being on the water my whole life) was from working on a bunker boat doing circles all morning haha. But it works!
Oh yeah!! That’ll do it.
Nothing better than a net full of silver
You know it!!
Good stuff! How much extra rope to you have added to the net line? 20 or so feet?
Yep, around there. 20-25 ft. Use a Velcro strap around your wrist and attach the line to the Velcro Incase you net something solid. (Big Mike didn’t use the Velcro but he should have).
Great Video!
Thank you my brother!!👍👍
YAY First!! Love the videos
MY MAN!!
Thanks man love it!!
Thanks brother!!
I've not had any mechanical issue other that a few minor one's at delivery which they took care of. The dealership is very busy and my questions go unanswered.
Thank you for the video. I'm new at this and have been frustrated by the empty net. 👍
Thanks brother!! It can be tough.
Second video I watched. A lot fishing videos are about them. You makes these with the narration for us to get better. Thanks Mike.
Thanks brother !!!
Cowboy style....Team Old School at work
You know it brother!! Those G forces can be tough when the boat goes in circles. I have been stuck frozen trying to throw the net right but the hard right hand turn pulls the net left 😁😁🤣
What are the specs on your preferred net for this technique?
11 ft Black Pearl Cast Net INVI Series
amzn.to/2K58pQa
I use a 1.8 lb per foot 1-1/4” mesh net. I love the new Black Pearl INVI nets, but they don’t make a 10 footer right now which is the max size allowed in NY. Here is the link for the 8 footer, they also have an 11. They are the most amazing nets I’ve ever used. They are the easiest to load and throw.

Could you make a video on your tackle for striper fishing? - I’m really struggling with getting all the right gear, I’m happy to pay the price, on the right tackle...
You know I got you covered brother!!
th-cam.com/video/SV3ePAf9vZk/w-d-xo.html. This mostly freshwater version, but it covers ALOT that is saltwater too.
Great video and I love the fishing dog. I had one just like it.
Thanks brother!! 👍👍😁
Mike, like always another great video! What time of year is best to catch Menhaden? I've been catching white perch and spot in marina's. Should i be focusing rivers meeting the bay?
They will show up mostly when water hits 50 and stay as long as the water is warm. In NY we see them in March thru November. They love backwater spots where they can be safer. Creeks, harbors, rivers, little cuts.
@@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS Thanks for the quick response. BTW i screwed up! I am i bit naive when it comes to utube and how you guys make some coin off of your passion for fishing. I ordered a black pearl cast net because of your video you posted. Its a 6 week back order. Can I somehow mention your name to black pearl for you to get credit?
No worries brother!! There is a link in the description. There are some in stock at the link on Amazon. I do get a small percentage for gas 😁😁. Thanks brother!! I appreciate you looking out!
@@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS I'll be more cognizant in the future watching your videos. Maybe someone else who reads this will not be as naive as i was! FISH ON!
I really appreciate that brother!! 👍👍
Recently found you on TH-cam your videos are very educational and entertaining keep it up. What weight and mesh size would you recommend for bunker?
I like 1.8lbs per foot with the largest mesh you can get. 5/8- 1-1/4” The new Black Pear INVI NETS ARE CRAZY! I’m not throwing one in this video but you will see them in videos goin forward. They are truly easier to load and throw because of the “chain” of lead shot instead of marble lead. No BS. They are legit easier to throw. Check this out th-cam.com/video/f_YjocnVKQ8/w-d-xo.html
Here is the net amzn.to/2XGNj2y
@@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS thank you for the reply. I was looking at the barracuda nets this week on your recommendation from another video but was unsure of the correct size I will check out black pearl thank you Mike
I wanna know how to find big gizzard Shad in Lakes!
Im doing a video on that soon. Backs of creeks. Think shallow. Watch for flips.
@@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS Can you also do a video on how to target big fish in fresh water lakes.
Great information Mike, as always, and good timing on the video. Patiently waiting for my Black Pearl! I fish up in the Kid’s neck of the woods.
Awesome!! Go get em!
Good video man. That was interesting and cool. That South Carolina boy needs to get a little taller or little stronger to pull in nets fulls of bait like that. Haha 😆
😁😁😁. You know Chip??
Yes sir. We used to fish a lot together. He got me into striper fishing. We also work for the same company. He’s a great fisherman with a lot of fishing knowledge.
Thanks Mike for the information. Please send the video you referenced. Apparently, my boat on has the single pole switches for the pumps. There is only On and Off. Thats going to get revised!
The dealership I purchased my boat from has already discontinued their relationship with Sea Pro so I'm left hanging.
That’s unfortunate. They should still honor the service agreement.
Maybe I just found out why I cant catch shad over deep water
Will definitely be trying this circling method
T O S for life
Thanks brother!!
I should have tried to net some bunker today. I used hook and line to catch spot, but was mostly catching undersized croaker. Needless to say, I couldn't use those for bait. The spot I was able to catch came off the circle hooks too easily. One got its tail bit off by a blue fish. I turned it into cut bait, and only caught a skate. Oh well. It was still nice to be out there.
Matthew White Yes sir!! If your near the water, life is good!!
How can I catch the spot? Any info?
@@mrbloxx60 I usually use hook and line near structure. You can catch them on a variety of baits such as blood worms, nightcrawlers, small pieces of crab, and even tiny pieces of shrimp.
Again I'll settle for second......LOL
😛😛😛🤣
😅👍🏻👍🏻
THE PRO WILL NEVER TELL YOU???
HAHAHAHAHA
TOTALLY FALSE.
Great video!!!
