  • Menhaden (also know as pogies or bunker) make great baits for all sorts of fish...
You can fish them dead on the bottom in deep water for cobia, grouper, and snapper, or you can fish them live in shallow water for redfish, trout, and snook.
They're also great baits for tarpon when they're running the beaches.
In this video, we've got Capt. Jud Brock of EasternAngling.com taking us behind the scenes with him as he catches menhaden to prepare for a trip the next day.
    You'll learn:
    - How to find schools of menhaden that you can catch with your cast net (and which schools you likely can't catch)
    - The best size cast net for menhaden
    - The best way to keep dead menhaden if you're using them at a later time
    - And much more
Have any questions about catching menhaden?

Slushing menhaden (pogies) immediately with ice, seawater and pool salt superchills them, makes them hard and keeps them that way much longer. After sloshing in the slush for hour you can drain the water, leave them in the ice and you've got great bait for days. Doing the same before freezing makes them almost like fresh caught when thawed.

I caught 2 peanut bunkers in my cast net last night and I decided to keep them alive overnight and both of them surprisingly survived till now but had to kill one cuz I wanted to just keep the other bunker which is doing fine right now I bought it a air pump for the water and usss aquarium salt for it so it’s doing rlly good rn

I wish I could find them, or even the bigger ones in Clearwater, FL for tarpon and grouper.

I use a net for bait(5ft). I have never been able to get fish in deeper water(10+). In fact in much over 4or 5 i have problems. Ignore that i need a larger net for now. Do i let the net hit the bottom in say 8 ft or do i try to do something fancy.
