And they usually disable SATA ports instead of PCIe lanes used by the PCIe slots, unlike a PCIe SSD. Also, PCIe-based SSDs, even something like the new super fast 960 Pro with over 3GB/s doesn't really perform too much better at all in the real world over a SATA SSD. It really only performs better for things that do large file transfers like copying large video files for video editing and then that's really only when the file is being copied to the same drive, not another (unless of course there are two PCIe SSDs).
I have been watching SSD vs HDD tests for a few days now and this is the one video that made things clear of what happens after you use a drive for a longer time. Great video and thank you for it.
Awesome guys you've pretty much cemented an SSD into my next build. Love the real world tests the only tests really worth a damn. Couldn't think of a better use for your old drive. Thanks
I get annoyed people keep referencing boot times when that's about the least impressive difference between an SSD an HDD. It's to the point where people think that boot times is all it improves. Seriously just go scroll down and I bet close to half the comments consist of this: "My *insert random HDD brand* drive boots in like *Insert random time in the 30seconds -1min range* why do I need an SSD?". Enjoy purposely avoiding change and purposely making your computer experience worse because you are too cheap to shell out what is at this point a very nominal amount of money. I mean come on, on the extreme low end you are talking 50-60 bucks. Also please don't reference the amount of storage space you are getting for that money. That's a non-issue in a desktop environment because you are paying for the speed not the space and your old HDD hasn't magically disappeared for all your mass storage needs.
***** Yup I was helping troubleshoot my parents crappy prebuilt computer the other day which is running an HDD for boot (computers fairly new so I'm going to guess it's a 7200rpm seagate) and holy crap you don't realize how SLOW it is when you haven't used an HDD for a boot drive for over 2 years. Took what felt like an eternity to boot, just opening up random folders had a lag I wasn't used to and even opening up the start menu I could SEE the icons loading up ;p It felt like the computer was freezing up every time I clicked something because I'm just not used to the seek times on HDD's anymore. It's just a subtle lag to everything I was doing that I never want back after using an SSD.
Yes, thank you! This whole comment section has been annoying to read. An ssd is the biggest improvement to your pc experience for the money. It can make an old pc feel responsive and light it's so nice. The only people with criticisms are the ones who haven't tried it.

Janis Zambars The dislikes and the polarizing effect you observe in the comment section seems to be centered around the fact that the test was not correct. Old HDD, new SSD. aserta What you've said is extremely subjective. Even though your points might be shared amongst the common consumers, you've to remember that there are ample amount of people out there who can afford SDD's, even in raid 0. Not only that but having top of the line SSD's such as the Intel 730 series SSD's in raid 0 for many justify the cost. The divergence in performance is akin to that of buying an exorbitant car (£50,000 for example) instead of a modest car (£15,000).
Every single friend I've recommended an SSD to were hesitant at first but once they got one. they said they would never go back to HDD. They were all amazed at the difference. Honestly, you have to have one to see what I mean. If you haven't got one, get one.
It just makes everything better, even small things like opening right click menu's. There's never a delay with an SSD, yet on HDD it loads for a few seconds. Also opening start menu's, using search, loading the list of installed programs before uninstalling. All happen instantly. Just makes using your pc so much nicer.
Totally agree, my main system has had nothing but SSDs for a few years now, just recently I wanted some extra cheap space for game recording and a bit of "scratch pad" storage so I got a WD black, 2 weeks later I had to get a second one for RAID 0 just to help make it bearable to use. Even though all its used for is low use storage it still managed to frustrate the s*** out of me.
When you go for speed, want speed (SSD), you really can't go back. Slow (hard disk) is NOT where it's at for those of us who compete in gaming, or even just normal desktop activities... ;) (Hard drives are best for cheap mass storage these days.)
hmm after growing up with playing minecraft with 5-8 fps regurlarly and seeing my laptop(ibm r40) crash when trying to play any downloaded game, i just cant imagine the luxury of having a ssd,and now i am about to buy a 970 evo 500gb m.2 ssd
I'd like to point out that this is a very unfair comparison. The HDD, being as old as it is, has a terrible read/write speed compared to a brand new HDD, not just that, because it's so old, the HDD has been worn a lot, making it even slower... To make this test fair he should have cloned his data to a brand new HDD as well as the SSD; that way he'd run a fucked up OS on 2 brand new drives, rather than on one brand new and one ancient...
Well, the idea wasn't to get the best of both markets to do a fully loaded, brand new test. The idea was for the average user with a shite HDD, and what performence boost he would get, with an SSD with identical load.
Glisern Dont make sense as if you update that shity HDD you would still make a fresh install. Also from what i understood it was to show as if the SSD was just as old (that they failue in my view)
Glisern You have to take hardware wear into account... A brand new hdd is gonna be more than 3 times faster than a 6 year old one of the same make and capacity, simply because they didn't make them as good back then as they do now. Which is why it's more fair to migrate the data to a new HDD as well as a new SSD. To put it in perspective: What they did in the test was compare a Model T with a modern day electric car, rather than comparing a gasoline car and an electric car from the same year under the same load
Great and very representative video in terms of "real life situations". We need more stuff like this! It easier for customers to be identified with what they'll get!
I've just had a new pc without an ssd and for the machine to boot up and be useable took 2mins. Now I've installed an ssd and moved everything over to that, 2mins has now been reduced to 27 seconds.
MatthiasRosberg ypu should have typed msconfig in the start run box thing and got rid of all the crap that runs when you start up. 2 mins to start is ridiculous.
+MatthiasRosberg 27 sec boot with a ssd? sounds kinda long imo. My pc goes down and it is up and running again under 10 sec. Although i only have my OS on my SSD and the rest on my HDD that does not boot at the same time
+sangeon park that is just STUPID talk.. TOO Lazy to optimize? It takes 30 sec.. on a HDD =P Hell, MY win7 boot times are under 30 sec because i spent 13 seconds to adjust my boot items. so easy, a cave woman could do it =P
I have learned more back door fixes and standard fixes that have helped keep me going with my buils. Thank you so much for taking the time to build these videos to help other tecs, it's very generous of you. Your information would not come cheap at a omputer store so I hope all that watch your vids appreciate them as much as I do. Priceless information, thank you again and again.
Once you have SSD, you never go back to HDD ;) I have a laptop with SSD that I've had as my daily machine for about 5 years now (Win7/64) and I keep it fairly clean + use autoruns now and again to make sure nothing necessary is trying to start on login The original install was ghosted over to a larger SSD about 18 months ago, but in all that time it's consistently booted up in around 30s and is as fast to use as when installed. The old 128Gb drive I stuck in a caddy and used to safely store video/pics when travelling :)
+Matt D (Frizbee) I had 2 Samsung laptop HDDs (Rebranded Seagate). The first one lasted 9 months and the other one lasted 7. My moms AIO PC has a desktop Seagate and is almost 5 years old and still going strong.
No but you will be in and playing before the other players with regular HDDs. It's fantastic for games like Battlefield, I'm always one of the first into vehicles while everyone is still in the loading screen
Andrew Johnson i still live in my parents hous. but with my own room(half a floor). i basicly rant a room for free. and free food. and free washing. and no water and electric bill.
Exactly, SSD is a gamble, it can last 5 years or more, or it can last at the most 5 years. Where there are still HDD from 1995 PCs that still running the install from that year.
***** From my experience, if I use an SSD extensively, i.e lots of installing/deleting, it dies after 3-4 years. You can get it to 5 years. I'm kind of conflicted on them, but they're getting cheaper so that's good.
Been watching your channel for ages, and I appreciate the extra mile you guys go to help out and provide info that actually helps make real life decisions, IT wise. Love it! Great work as always, Cheers!
I love that there are actually people in these comments arguing that SSDs don't matter, aren't worth it, etc. They are objectively better in every single way that I can think of. It sucks that some of you guys can't afford one or haven't used one yet, but that doesn't mean you need to leave incredibly stupid, un-informed, and simply incorrect opinions laying around the place. :3
Only thing they aren't good for is high-availability, high-load storage. But of course, if you're doing anything like that you're going to be using enterprise grade drives, which will dick on a standard HDD
***** So they are not, in fact, better in any single way you can think of. Your statement is as worthless as the ones you're complaining about. SSDs and HDDs have different strengths and weaknesses and thus lend themselves for different applications. It's foolish to think either will replace the other any time soon.
It still isnt a fair test. The OS, drivers, boot table and softwares may be the same. But the HDD is old and there for its damadged with time (and run a slower SATA i bet). Where the SSD may have the same terrible softwares, but the drive it self is new.
I've done similar tests with a Intel SSD that's about a year old and a western digital black drive that I bought about the same time and got similar results. SSDs really do make a huge difference. its just a mater of if the cost is worth it to you.
John Kempton I know, HDD cant beat SSD, not even the velociraptors from WD. But the test still isnt fair, the age diference do give even a bigger advantage over.
John Kempton I got one in my PS3. And as we know the PS3 is rather limited in many ways, slow chipset, tiny amount of memory etc. But even there things are smoother. And that is a big feel difference, An HDD is just not as smooth.. but an SSD will just smoothly do what you ask it to.
But it's wayy too expensive for me to save all my data and programs on ssd :/ I got my windows on a small SSD and already very happy about the much quicker boot etc
It’s nice having the ssd and hdd combo because all the things you heavily use you can throw on the ssd and the hdd for less important things, pictures and videos, and not have to worry about all the data you store and delete using up your write cycles.
Funny i have an HDD from 1993 who still have my 1999 Windows 95 instalation and it run better then this HDD from slick. But again his HDD has more shit then mine.
This isn't a torture test. If you want to kill these drives, run continuous read/write cycles of the drive's full capacity until one of them fails (Spoiler: It's the SSD).
Even if the speed was the same, I like knowing my data is safe when using my laptop in bumpy places and there is no annoying noise from a HDD while running.
I think this would have been a more interesting comparison if you have given the choice between a new HD or a new SSD. We all understand that the old drive will perform badly. The question would be if I need to replace it, should I buy another HD or an SSD with the price premium that brings.
MrDark21knight No shit, aren't you a genuis. RogerWilco is saying comparing a old HDD to a new SSD (even if it is a clone of the old HDD) is not as fair since the HDD also has years of more wear and tear on it. They should have cloned it to a new, modern HDD than compare that to the new SSD to get a more accurate result.
MrDark21knight Please send me a link or tell me the title because I did not see any other video of them matching the description I gave in my previous comment.
Age is a huge factor as well. If you have a 3 year old HDD and clone to an SSD that's brand new (or not the same age) of course the SSD is going to perform better because it doesn't have all the mileage as the HDD. There's really no fair test to compare SSD's to HDD's unless you install the same exact programs, drivers, games, etc. every single time to both drives for a set time such as 2 years, which who has time for that lol. Cloning doesn't mean it's a fair test
It wasn't meant as a "fair" test. Most people looking to get an SSD have 3-5+ year old HDD in their system that's been used for a lot of things. I don't care about synthetic benchmarks with freshly formatted drives running just windows and bench-marking software, I care about what kind of speed increase I can expect an SSD to give me over the HDD that's sitting in my system right now. This was much closer to showing that than many other SSD vs HDD comparisons.
This test could be fair if - Both HDD and SSD were new with a copy of the old drive's image. All the questions would go away in that case (cause the fact the hdd is old and by some reason they even didn't test it - where is the check on bad sectors of the drive?SMART info? this was a little bit lazy of you.But still thanks for the video
You totally missed the point of this video. Check it out again. They specifically wanted to show what old hdd's are like after heavy use. And what improvement can be gained by upgrading to SSD. I don't get it how so many people have missed the point of video.
jothain Well, you've missed my point a lot. To break it down for you to very a simple statement : there is a Huge difference between healthy old hdd and Not healthy old hdd
Damn, somehow it's pointless to note that healthy old hdd and an old hdd with bad sectors ARE VERY DIFFERENT THINGS. very surprising that is not clear enough to some people. Again. they should have check old hdd on bad sectors and S.m.a.r.t. check
I don't really get the point of the video. We all know that SSD is faster than HDD. If the argument is that HDD slows down over time, I would've like to see the load times for a new HDD or a clean install in comparison.
jockslap I'm using my old HDD for games and such, gonna beat on it until it dies. lmao, but. I would replace all my hdds with SSDs if i had the money to
Actually it would not matter how old the ssd is because they have NO moving parts at all, hdd is full of moving parts that can ware out over time and cause failure to an HDD as opposed to an SSD which has no moving parts, Hints the name (solid state drive) and will not fail under stress and does not get hot at all. So it doesn't really matter which one is new the SSD will always outlast HHD
I love you guys been watching for a year or so I've been a it guy for years finally moving to a sand disk ssd and I love this test there should be more like this sense it shows real world scenarios for true performance
When this video came out, that was understandable... but it's been 5 years man... If you can afford "great hardware", you can afford a proper nvme drive lmao
why does that matter, the guy who was trying to sell me one seemed to think boot time mattered does it at all affect performance of the game or just makes windows and games boot faster?
You're not going to get a bump to FPS with an SSD, but if you're used to a mechanical drive and you switch to an SSD, I can assure you, you won't regret it. It makes a colossal difference in how your computer performs.
Right? Kind of a fucked up comparison - like pitting a high school nerd who is failing gym class up against an experience professional athlete in an endurance competition... yeah, that's fair.
@@BlackieNuff it's testing to see how it fares if you were to upgrade and clone your existing OS full of stuff over, not just starting from scratch with a fresh install.
Medo Gabr Would I lie just to appease people? It boots in 8 seconds... is there anything else you want me to say? I'm running Mac OS X, so that's why it boots up so quickly. Maybe you're used to how inefficient Windows is.
+maccollectorZ (Commenting Account) lol sorry that was my friend i didnt do that. Thats nice tho. Btw i only use mac os x i hate windows 10. I rarely use it but when i do its only for gaming as mac library is very small. Also mac os x will not make your build any faster that depends on your hardware.
Medo Gabr I put both Windows 7 and Mavericks on the same machine; it was much faster with Mavericks. In fact, it was amazingly fast for a Core 2 Duo machine.
King Brad your best option is to buy SSD first it will make just about every other thing fast in your build, buy HDD later unless you need more than 1TB of storage
Ningamer X Depends on how much space you need. Most users get a ssd for the operating system and a mechanical drive for storage. Unless you have a large budget by all means get the biggest ssd you can buy they are vastly superior to mechanical drives in speed and reliability..
Ningamer X I agree get the biggest SSD you can afford for the OS and applications and games and a HDD for storage of the rest of your files. However, even though people see that SSD's don't have a mechanical part and should therefore be more reliable, I have in practice seen many a SSD fail. So be careful SSD's can fail too. Surprisingly to my company and my administrator we have seen more SSD's fail which is kinda a big bummer bc I love them.
I've owned 2 barracuda's. The 1TB I had lasted 3 years but got extremely slow for that last year and eventually died. I went and bought a 2TB one and it has lasted less than a year before experiencing issues. I'm convinced these are some of the worst HDDs on the market. The next build I run will be using western digital HDD combined with a 250gb SSD. Stay away from the Barracuda.
Did you tested and verified the "age" of your Barracuda drives? Some people sell used and "restored" HDD as if they were brand new. Also, check Seagate's site for currently models. Even if it has the same storage capacity and line name, there are many "generations" and models of Seagate and Barracuda drives.
I put a 120GB Samsung 840 evo into my new build alongside a Western Digital Caviar blue 1TB and I am so glad I did. I start up my PC and It's on before I've gotten comfortable!
Teo Tornaci Barracuda drives are pretty good. Mine has been through hell, that being dropped, getting very hot when the fan in my case went out (145F measured with my laser thermometer), and the occasional "spill your morning coffee on it" scenario.
Its a great drive for the price but it could break in one of two years. If you Raid 10 it then GREAT but if you want it for the OS and you use another drive for games, files, etc JUST buy IT
The point of this video is also to show that if you have a old HDD, with maybe around 5 years of usage, is it worth it to buy a new SSD? That's why they compared a old HDD to a new SSD, not new HDD to new SSD.
@ Potato Seems kind of moot - new vs old is kind of a no-brainer ; if you have ANY kind of old drive, then naturally a newer one is gonna perform better. The real test should have been just plain HDD vs SSD, both drives of equal age and use (and other parameters/factors, like capacity), for measuring performance and other practical applications. This biased comparison could confuse a novice or n00b and dupe them into going SSD when in fact their situation might be better off by staying with HDD - even if it's a 5yr old HDD.
Cloning is not bit by bit... And therefore to have the same condition you should have cloned the old hdd on a brand new hdd and put that vs the clone ssd. Part of that booting time increase comes from the clogging of the register. Keep up the good work linus tech tips staff! I really enjoy your content!
They used the old drive and not a cloned New HDD so that they could compare what a HDD is like after years of use. They even explained this in the beginning of the video.
insainllama We know that, but still would have been more fair to include a new HDD as well to see if the difference between upgrade to a new SSD is worth the price and performance difference over upgrading to a new, modern HDD or even a SSHD.
Ray Drouillard a bit... but in some cases, a bit more than the previous "bit"...i will take a SSD, my laptop and i want one, you should take some money to take one too...
Faze Hunter For the sarcasm challenged, we need to note that defragging will have no effect on the speed of an SSD. It can have a huge effect on an HDD, though.
I know it may sound a little stupid, but there are cases where games do run better with SSDs. A couple years back, i was playing batman arkham city, installed on a hdd, as i progress through the city at a fast pace, the fps would suddenly drop, id then notice my HDD light flashing its ass off and my GPU usage dip in MSI afterburner. Loading huge amounts of data during a level can affect game play to an extent, espcially todays games that are huge 30gb files. Another similar scenario is GTA san andreas back in the old days, for people who used to play it on PS2, driving really fast down the road would blur the whole world, and would take 1 minute to load a building once at a complete stop cause the DVD drive couldnt keep up with the rest of the hardware. You could literally hear the laser moving back and forth.
SSD's always result in games running better, unless the game precaches everything while in the hardloading screen (nobody does this anymore :/), which then only the hardloading screen will be longer, and in gameplay would be the exact same 0 loading. and if a game is 30Gigs, it's not all one file. it's split up across some number of files, which certainly helps loading to some degree. so you're right, but you're 'righter' than you think you are.
Games that have assets constantly being loaded will be way smoother in a SSD. Diablo 3 is a good example of that, bad stuttering in a HDD every couple secs, butter smooth in a ssd.
I love this comment, says Huge 30 GB files. games nowadays are around 60-100 GB. I know this is a 3 year old comment but it still is funny. but no matter, you are still correct
A fairer comparison would have been to backup all the data and programs and start fresh with both the HDD and with SSD. This scenario used a probably highly fragmented HDD which had been in use for 5 years(?) vrs a fresh install SSD. My first SSD failed after 6 months and the second one started to show erratic behavior (hanging) so I reinstalled my HDD. It is slower but not painfully so and it's got the luxury of lots of space :-). YMMV.
This is a bit one sided since he even admits his hard drive is screwed up, they should get a new hard drive and a new SSD made by the same company and the same price range to see price and preformance
Noah Johnson I think he's thinking what I am. They should have used the image from the old drive but cloned it to a new HDD and SSD. That old drive probably wouldn't even compare well to a new drive with the same image.
This is wrong linus and slick because that hdd is way older than the sdd to the hdd and the hdd would have been been subjected to more ware and tare than the ssd I think you guys should have bought a new hdd and ssd and used them doing the same stuff for like a week or two then do this test clearly the ssd has an advantage here being younger and just being cloned intead of experiencing it for itself
Yea... I don't think the results would have changed whatsoever. Maybe the hard drive would be faster, but the SSD would still blow it out of the water like usual
Kim Stockton You people are acting as if using an SSD for 2 weeks slows it down. It doesn't. Unless they badly wore out the cells (which takes years with today's SSDs) there is no way the HDD would be much better off.
Oh shit here comes the memess!!!! IT'S JJOOOOOOOHHHHHNNNNN CCCEEEEEENNNNNAAAAA IN A STEEL CAGE CHUTES AND LADDERS MATCH AT THIS SUNDAY'S WWE SSSUUUUUPPEEEERRRRRR SSSLLLLAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAMMMM MLG 420 BLAZE IT 360 NOSCOPE MOTHAFUKAN TELLETUBYS MOAR MLG SHIT WOMBO COMBO IN YO AZZHOLE....
I put up with Linus' quirky sense of humor to see interesting stuff like this. I've wanted to see this comparison for about a year or two but Linus is the only one that I've seen that actually devised this really convincing test. Thanks!
We need more crazy tests like this :o With all the hardware you guys have lying around I'm sure you could come up with some cool tests. For instance, I'd love to see a test on positive/negative air pressure :o Find a couple cases, put some hardware in it, make sure to match the brand and number of fans, make one case have more air intake and the other have more exhaust. Put those two cases in the garage for a couple week, check for dust, compare.
I just bought a Macbook Air with SSD and its boot up time is literally FIVE SECONDS. And it's amazing because with my old computer, a PC, Compaq with 500 HDD, it would boot up in FIVE MINUTES. I definitely recommend SSDS for anyone, students or gamers, to upgrade to a nice SDD for faster and BETTER performance. Although it is expensive, it is worth it!
sponsored by intel 750 ssd. "were using a corsair ssd"😂😂😂😂
Intel 750 fucking fast pcie ssd that's makes Sata ssds cry
but why pcie when m.2 m
M.2 NVMe uses PCIe lane, so those are the same thing (besides the form factor)
And they usually disable SATA ports instead of PCIe lanes used by the PCIe slots, unlike a PCIe SSD.
Also, PCIe-based SSDs, even something like the new super fast 960 Pro with over 3GB/s doesn't really perform too much better at all in the real world over a SATA SSD. It really only performs better for things that do large file transfers like copying large video files for video editing and then that's really only when the file is being copied to the same drive, not another (unless of course there are two PCIe SSDs).
but I don't need the sata port if I'm using my ssd in that m.2 slot .-.

Been rocking an SSD for the past 3 and half years. Once you go SSD for your boot drive, you never go back.
Thanks

Also opening start menu's, using search, loading the list of installed programs before uninstalling. All happen instantly. Just makes using your pc so much nicer.
Totally agree, my main system has had nothing but SSDs for a few years now, just recently I wanted some extra cheap space for game recording and a bit of "scratch pad" storage so I got a WD black, 2 weeks later I had to get a second one for RAID 0 just to help make it bearable to use. Even though all its used for is low use storage it still managed to frustrate the s*** out of me.
i will if you pay for it :/
When you go for speed, want speed (SSD), you really can't go back. Slow (hard disk) is NOT where it's at for those of us who compete in gaming, or even just normal desktop activities... ;) (Hard drives are best for cheap mass storage these days.)
hmm after growing up with playing minecraft with 5-8 fps regurlarly and seeing my laptop(ibm r40) crash when trying to play any downloaded game, i just cant imagine the luxury of having a ssd,and now i am about to buy a 970 evo 500gb m.2 ssd
this is the type of videos we need
I'd like to point out that this is a very unfair comparison.
The HDD, being as old as it is, has a terrible read/write speed compared to a brand new HDD, not just that, because it's so old, the HDD has been worn a lot, making it even slower...
To make this test fair he should have cloned his data to a brand new HDD as well as the SSD; that way he'd run a fucked up OS on 2 brand new drives, rather than on one brand new and one ancient...
Indeed, it is actually less fair than the fresh install tests.
Well, the idea wasn't to get the best of both markets to do a fully loaded, brand new test. The idea was for the average user with a shite HDD, and what performence boost he would get, with an SSD with identical load.
Glisern
Dont make sense as if you update that shity HDD you would still make a fresh install.
To put it in perspective:
What they did in the test was compare a Model T with a modern day electric car, rather than comparing a gasoline car and an electric car from the same year under the same load
Nikolaj Lepka
Also, that barracuda can even be SATA 2 depending on how old it is.
Great and very representative video in terms of "real life situations". We need more stuff like this! It easier for customers to be identified with what they'll get!
YA this far better shows the "quality of life" improvements an SSD provides.
MatthiasRosberg you should check for firmware updates for your SSD and make sure your BIOS setting is AHCI unless your running windows8 or better
+MatthiasRosberg 27 sec boot with a ssd? sounds kinda long imo. My pc goes down and it is up and running again under 10 sec. Although i only have my OS on my SSD and the rest on my HDD that does not boot at the same time
your a liar, not even in sleep mode would you get ten secxonds. more like 5 minutes
+sangeon park that is just STUPID talk.. TOO Lazy to optimize? It takes 30 sec.. on a HDD =P Hell, MY win7 boot times are under 30 sec because i spent 13 seconds to adjust my boot items. so easy, a cave woman could do it =P
Is there a huge difference when playing games?
No. SSD only make fast boot up, read and write files. Nothing more.
Negative
Loading times shrink substantially.
No. The only way it will effect your games is load times.
In Battlefield 4, it makes a big difference in map load time.
"If you don't like the video, dislike and subscribe. We will make something you will like eventually."
Once you have SSD, you never go back to HDD ;)
I have a laptop with SSD that I've had as my daily machine for about 5 years now (Win7/64) and I keep it fairly clean + use autoruns now and again to make sure nothing necessary is trying to start on login
The original install was ghosted over to a larger SSD about 18 months ago, but in all that time it's consistently booted up in around 30s and is as fast to use as when installed.
The old 128Gb drive I stuck in a caddy and used to safely store video/pics when travelling :)
four years later > how is the ssd now and-or how long did it last, signs of failing?
I have 3 2TB SSD for Games,OS,system and apps and a 6TB HDD for pictures, videos, movies, songs and programs can a SSD store much than a HDD?
Wow, a Seagate drive that didn't die after less than a year? Is such a thing possible?
Matt D I have a Seagate HDD for almost 4 years now.
iDian23 Every Seagate drive I've ever had has died after less than a year. I only use WD now for mechanical drives.
My Seagate drive died after 1 year and they made me pay for postage and some expensive packaging to replace it. Costed about $20 in total
+Matt D (Frizbee) I had 2 Samsung laptop HDDs (Rebranded Seagate). The first one lasted 9 months and the other one lasted 7. My moms AIO PC has a desktop Seagate and is almost 5 years old and still going strong.
+Matt D (Frizbee) me 2tb Seagate did do click of death then died after 3 years :(
i am using now WD Green 2tb
Bring a 5 year old SSD to make this comparison equal. SSDs destroy themselves with every write cycle and performance degrades over time as well.
0:15 How fast is a hard drive compared to SSD.
Can i get more fps in all games on ssd ?
You can get much quicker load times though.
nope. As Hannerman said, you'll need a better GPU and CPU to achieve higher performance in games.
No but you will be in and playing before the other players with regular HDDs. It's fantastic for games like Battlefield, I'm always one of the first into vehicles while everyone is still in the loading screen
Nope, But... 0 loading times,
Bought mine for BF4 and went from being last on the map to being first 99% of the time.
once you go ssd you never go back
(unless you lose your job, and dont have much money)
or a student
Andre Cruz I'm a student, and I have an SSD
Andrew Johnson so do i
but i do have a partime job. without i wouldnt have one
rubikfan1 Same here man.
Cool thing about living in a shared house, fuck all living expenses, can still afford nice things
Andrew Johnson i still live in my parents hous. but with my own room(half a floor). i basicly rant a room for free. and free food. and free washing. and no water and electric bill.
How about doing that same test with an actual five year old ssd?
There's no such thing as a 5-year-old SSD. They die after 3 years tops.
But how about using a new hard drive that you copy the os to
NoL Chefo they don't, how come the Samsung ones come with a 5 year warrantee? Stop quoting false facts
Linus hasn't changed
Been watching your channel for ages, and I appreciate the extra mile you guys go to help out and provide info that actually helps make real life decisions, IT wise. Love it! Great work as always, Cheers!
I just started watching his channel and I see the same results!
once you go SSD you'll never go back to a HDD as C drive its not just boot times everything is faster
I agree, but I'd rather get a better CPU/RAM than get an SSD.
I don't care the loading times, I'd rather get up and get a quick snack/drink.
The problem is that I need a lot of storage space, and that isn't something an SSD will excel at. Speed is nice, but storage space is necessary.
And that's why a secondary 1-2 TB HDD for music, pics, etc is a great solution to that.
Yeah it just looks like a plug for corsair
I've done similar tests with a Intel SSD that's about a year old and a western digital black drive that I bought about the same time and got similar results. SSDs really do make a huge difference. its just a mater of if the cost is worth it to you.
John Kempton
I know, HDD cant beat SSD, not even the velociraptors from WD. But the test still isnt fair, the age diference do give even a bigger advantage over.
It's a real world test, showing a user upgrading to an SSD from an old mechanical, and then cloning their old drive.
John Kempton
I got one in my PS3. And as we know the PS3 is rather limited in many ways, slow chipset, tiny amount of memory etc. But even there things are smoother. And that is a big feel difference, An HDD is just not as smooth.. but an SSD will just smoothly do what you ask it to.
So glad this video is now here! I love the very in depth spec comparisons/ reviews!
Ive been needing help with a retro build and these ancient LTT videos are helping a lot, thanks.
As far as I'm concerned. Once you go SSD, you never go back.
Running someone else's system with HDD's is like having your teeth pulled.
Agreed. Sometimes I feel like just freaking paying for one for them because it'll piss me off so much lol.
@@jace_Henderson yeah you're a smart one SSD peasants are like console peasants don't know a shit.
Once you go m.2 you never go back 3 second boot times
Damn, I thought you were literally going to torture them.
Wow, that HDD is like my 107 year-old great-grandmother. It has really gone through everything that could ever happen.
Even AIDS
shingles dont forget shingles
Funny i have an HDD from 1993 who still have my 1999 Windows 95 instalation and it run better then this HDD from slick.
But again his HDD has more shit then mine.
If the HDD didn't get Vista installed on it it didn't go through the worst of it. Let us all remember the drives that did.
LMAO!
Wait..... a torture test?
This isn't a torture test. If you want to kill these drives, run continuous read/write cycles of the drive's full capacity until one of them fails (Spoiler: It's the SSD).
You should test my 200MB HDD from my 486 computer from 1992. It hasn't been formatted since 1998 I think, still running Windows 95 :D
Damn
Windows XP on modern computers with a HDD loads in just a few seconds. Bet you could top 2 or 3 seconds with an ssd and i7.
That's a grandfather
***** He's saying it's damn old.
What the hell is widows 95
Even if the speed was the same, I like knowing my data is safe when using my laptop in bumpy places and there is no annoying noise from a HDD while running.
The real test would be a old SSD filed with Garbage and a brand-new clean HDD I bet the SSD will still out perform the HDD
Thanks for giving us a different, real-world, perspective on the ssd vs hdd comparison. I appreciate guys.
I think this would have been a more interesting comparison if you have given the choice between a new HD or a new SSD.
We all understand that the old drive will perform badly. The question would be if I need to replace it, should I buy another HD or an SSD with the price premium that brings.
RogerWilco SSD would still be faster then the newest HDD. always!
MrDark21knight No shit, aren't you a genuis. RogerWilco is saying comparing a old HDD to a new SSD (even if it is a clone of the old HDD) is not as fair since the HDD also has years of more wear and tear on it. They should have cloned it to a new, modern HDD than compare that to the new SSD to get a more accurate result.
psst waste of time. and they did that in another video...HD got its ass kick
MrDark21knight Please send me a link or tell me the title because I did not see any other video of them matching the description I gave in my previous comment.
RogerWilco buy an SSD, i am using one. OCZ ARC 100. well worth the $
Age is a huge factor as well.
Exactly!
Point is SSD is faster than HDD in general, got the money then go for one :P !
pcie is faster ssd is fast hybrid HDD slow regular HDD fucking slow
It wasn't meant as a "fair" test. Most people looking to get an SSD have 3-5+ year old HDD in their system that's been used for a lot of things. I don't care about synthetic benchmarks with freshly formatted drives running just windows and bench-marking software, I care about what kind of speed increase I can expect an SSD to give me over the HDD that's sitting in my system right now. This was much closer to showing that than many other SSD vs HDD comparisons.
Getting an SSD tomorrow after using an HDD my whole life
Lol I’m getting mine tm
@@michaelsantamaria8306 Got mine today hahahaha It's relatively faster I'm crying.
Kenneth Rae Colipapa lol nice
im getting one next week and never had an ssd before too, cant wait.
UPDATE: I got a 480GB SSD and 16GB ram now my pc runs 10 times faster
yeah , it also happens to me
Yes, please! More of these comparison videos. They are pretty unique on the interwebz.
I was waiting for this video since the live stream.
Thanks for the awesome work!!!
This test could be fair if -
Both HDD and SSD were new with a copy of the old drive's image.
All the questions would go away in that case (cause the fact the hdd is old and by some reason they even didn't test it - where is the check on bad sectors of the drive?SMART info?
this was a little bit lazy of you.But still thanks for the video
:( of course there has been such an obvious suggestion already in the comments :(
You totally missed the point of this video. Check it out again. They specifically wanted to show what old hdd's are like after heavy use. And what improvement can be gained by upgrading to SSD. I don't get it how so many people have missed the point of video.
jothain
Well, you've missed my point a lot. To break it down for you to very a simple statement : there is a Huge difference between healthy old hdd and Not healthy old hdd
Inv Great but its a worst case senarios and a lot of times it will be both unhealthy
and old
Damn, somehow it's pointless to note that healthy old hdd and an old hdd with bad sectors ARE VERY DIFFERENT THINGS. very surprising that is not clear enough to some people.
Again. they should have check old hdd on bad sectors and S.m.a.r.t. check
this test was faulty as the hdd was clearly worn out and the ssd was not worn for the same length. great video though.
Well think, it was from the perspective of upgrading from a hard drive to an ssd, so. what your or I would see.
I don't really get the point of the video. We all know that SSD is faster than HDD. If the argument is that HDD slows down over time, I would've like to see the load times for a new HDD or a clean install in comparison.
jockslap
^ I got an SSD because of this video actually
jockslap
I'm using my old HDD for games and such, gonna beat on it until it dies.
So it doesn't really matter which one is new the SSD will always outlast HHD
and now the same under linux?
holy shit how the hell did i get in a 2014 video of linus techtips
I love you guys been watching for a year or so I've been a it guy for years finally moving to a sand disk ssd and I love this test there should be more like this sense it shows real world scenarios for true performance
Still using an HDD boot drive with great hardware! It's my biggest bottleneck!
When this video came out, that was understandable... but it's been 5 years man... If you can afford "great hardware", you can afford a proper nvme drive lmao
Same, just got a cheap 120gb ssd to save my life.
Just purchased a 240gb SSD waiting for it in the mail I'm so hyped
The boot times are much faster.
why does that matter, the guy who was trying to sell me one seemed to think boot time mattered does it at all affect performance of the game or just makes windows and games boot faster?
You're not going to get a bump to FPS with an SSD, but if you're used to a mechanical drive and you switch to an SSD, I can assure you, you won't regret it. It makes a colossal difference in how your computer performs.
PhuchxpH they seem to be very expensive only downside to me
I'm sold on SSDs.
Luke has gotten so much better in front of the camera, I remember when he first started finishing the videos he was a bit awkward. Nice Job :)
More of these please. REAL LIFE situations are the best examples of what users can realistically anticipate when using any PC.
So a new SSD vs an old HDD wtf?
SacreDro well, realistic scenario...??? I have an old hdd but I’m getting new ssd
a more realistic scenario. i have an old hdd and want to decide whether to get an ssd or buy a new hdd
Yup
I usually format my PC once every two years or so, or just buy a new one lol.
Thanks to my Samsung Evo SSD, my laptop boots in 8 seconds.
Bull.
Medo Gabr
I put both Windows 7 and Mavericks on the same machine; it was much faster with Mavericks. In fact, it was amazingly fast for a Core 2 Duo machine.
+Medo Gabr i just put a 250gb 850 evo in my PC. He's not lying, that thing is fast !
you would like to stress that you overclocked the hard drive because there are 100s of reviews with a standard benchmark. love you linus
This is a great test that still holds up today. Good info for anyone wondering about upgrading from their old terrible hard drive to a new ssd
Nvidia 7000 series ? .. Linus do you know something we don´t O_o ?
yes, there is even an nvidia 7950 =P
it was around one year before the wii and xbox 360 came out
Nope they are old cards, Nvidia series used to be in the thousands and got changed when the 9800 card got rebranded to the 240 gtx
The annotations said he meant the 700 series. If you have them off, you might have missed it.
use google and you shal see. what if I tell you there is a ati/amd 9000 series ?:D
It´s not an annotation, it´s in the video, i was just joking :D
So should it buy a ssd now and a hdd later for my build??
Ningamer X yes or just get both since hard drive are pretty cheap
King Brad your best option is to buy SSD first it will make just about every other thing fast in your build, buy HDD later unless you need more than 1TB of storage
***** damn, forgot to mention "Build"..
Stay away from the Barracuda.
should you trust ssd boss
I've had a barracuda since 2007, did you shoot yours or something?
then why not a SSHD insted?
Did you tested and verified the "age" of your Barracuda drives? Some people sell used and "restored" HDD as if they were brand new. Also, check Seagate's site for currently models. Even if it has the same storage capacity and line name, there are many "generations" and models of Seagate and Barracuda drives.
I put a 120GB Samsung 840 evo into my new build alongside a Western Digital Caviar blue 1TB and I am so glad I did. I start up my PC and It's on before I've gotten comfortable!
I've had an 120GB OCZ SSD for like 8 years now and no problems at all.
Far better than any mechanical drive I've ever had. No errors, nothing!
can you have both in the same computer?
yes
OS on ssd, depending on size even a few favorite games.... Storage on hdd
"We'll make something you like eventually" xDD nice one
5:36 HDD HAS MORE FILES
P.S. Barracuda = WORST HDD EVER NO MATTER WHAT PERIOD
Teo Tornaci Barracuda drives are pretty good. Mine has been through hell, that being dropped, getting very hot when the fan in my case went out (145F measured with my laser thermometer), and the occasional "spill your morning coffee on it" scenario.
You guys should do more "real life tests" videos. This is the kind of testing that's actually relevant to how you use your computer on a daily basis.
This was a great video - real world tests are much more useful than benchmark software
Intel 730 or Samsung 850 PRO?
Intel 730 ☝️
Santiago Ponce de León Thanks bro
+Santiago Ponce de León how bout the BX100 of crucial?
Its a great drive for the price but it could break in one of two years. If you Raid 10 it then GREAT but if you want it for the OS and you use another drive for games, files, etc JUST buy IT
Intel bro. they work great and last long, I have a x25m since 2010 no problems ever
2019 ?
2021 hombre
Why not clone the contents of the old drive to a New HDD as well the New SSD so it'll be a fair test
The point of this video is also to show that if you have a old HDD, with maybe around 5 years of usage, is it worth it to buy a new SSD? That's why they compared a old HDD to a new SSD, not new HDD to new SSD.
How can they win through SSD bias if they actually do a fair comparison? LOL.
@ Potato
Seems kind of moot - new vs old is kind of a no-brainer ; if you have ANY kind of old drive, then naturally a newer one is gonna perform better.
So glad I found this guys videos! Helpful af!
Cloning is not bit by bit... And therefore to have the same condition you should have cloned the old hdd on a brand new hdd and put that vs the clone ssd.
Part of that booting time increase comes from the clogging of the register.
Keep up the good work linus tech tips staff! I really enjoy your content!
do a defrag...
They used the old drive and not a cloned New HDD so that they could compare what a HDD is like after years of use. They even explained this in the beginning of the video.
insainllama yes, because they want to show the difference after an upgrade in a worst case scenario.
insainllama We know that, but still would have been more fair to include a new HDD as well to see if the difference between upgrade to a new SSD is worth the price and performance difference over upgrading to a new, modern HDD or even a SSHD.
RIP Spock
Linus , please do an update torture test video for 2022, high capacity nvme SSD
Great to see a video like this for the common people
So the only way to counter a slow HDD is to get a new one every month? Lmao
Or do raid.
I wonder...
How much would it improve the HD's performance if you were to defrag it?
Ray Drouillard a bit... but in some cases, a bit more than the previous "bit"...i will take a SSD, my laptop and i want one, you should take some money to take one too...
I defrayed my SSD, now it is 1000x faster!
Faze Hunter For the sarcasm challenged, we need to note that defragging will have no effect on the speed of an SSD. It can have a huge effect on an HDD, though.
Ur wrong! SSD's are hard too!
Faze Hunter if you defrag a SSD, it breaks faster.
***** Yep 100% spot on. Pretty sure consoles still use Shader warming to take some load off the gpu, resulting in a longer hardload screen.
Would be fantastic to see the first restart side by side in real time... Otherwise... Great vid & Well done for thinking "outside the box"
You missed the point. Like you didn't even get it a little bit did ya?
Noah Johnson I think he's thinking what I am. They should have used the image from the old drive but cloned it to a new HDD and SSD. That old drive probably wouldn't even compare well to a new drive with the same image.
This is wrong linus and slick because that hdd is way older than the sdd to the hdd and the hdd would have been been subjected to more ware and tare than the ssd
I think you guys should have bought a new hdd and ssd and used them doing the same stuff for like a week or two then do this test
clearly the ssd has an advantage here being younger and just being cloned intead of experiencing it for itself
Yea... I don't think the results would have changed whatsoever. Maybe the hard drive would be faster, but the SSD would still blow it out of the water like usual
I agree with kameel and Nikolaj below, this is a really biased test in favour of the ssd,
Kim Stockton You people are acting as if using an SSD for 2 weeks slows it down.
My friend made a 420 Blazeit pun one day. He called it 720 Donut Glazeit. True story, Not joking!
.
great video on showing the difference that out shined the hdd and what a ssd can handle! thumbs up!
I put up with Linus' quirky sense of humor to see interesting stuff like this. I've wanted to see this comparison for about a year or two but Linus is the only one that I've seen that actually devised this really convincing test. Thanks!
I think this was a great idea. You should of ran some renderings, photoshop, compressing files, etc.
I seriously love his t-shirt with the pups.
That was a very interesting little comparison.
We need more crazy tests like this :o
With all the hardware you guys have lying around I'm sure you could come up with some cool tests.
For instance, I'd love to see a test on positive/negative air pressure :o
Find a couple cases, put some hardware in it, make sure to match the brand and number of fans, make one case have more air intake and the other have more exhaust.
Put those two cases in the garage for a couple week, check for dust, compare.
This is a better intro than the new one
Goes to show how far technology has come in the past 10+ years.
You ran a old hard drive, I feel you should have cloned the old hard drives data into anew ssd and a new hard drive and done those tests
This video is like telling you an adult can crawl faster than a toddler or walk quicker than a child
Thanks for the tip
Loved this video, would have like to see a hybrid in the mix too
I just bought a Macbook Air with SSD and its boot up time is literally FIVE SECONDS.
Apple is great for productivity. Windows is for gamers and editors, But an SSD will definitely up your laptops performance. It's great!
You do its really just because its also running a EFI BIOS? My mobo (ASUS Z97-P) boots up in 7s with a HDD.
