I know I'm very late to the party here, but I want to thank you for all your hard work. Having done translation of poetry in graduate school from another language (not Irish Gaelic, but an ancient language) to English, I know what a complex, demanding task it is. I've also written phonetic speech guides. This is truly hard work, and your dedication & care deserves respect & appreciation. No translation can be an exact 1:1 correlation because the connotations & context are never exactly alike between any 2 languages. This is especially true with poetry of which song lyrics are part, because of the creative use of words to evoke &, call to mind other uses of the word which don't exist in English. Since I don't know Irish Gaelic , your efforts here made a very great difference to me in listening to & appreciating this beautiful song!

Irish is such beautiful language to hear. Especially from Enya. English speaking Irish people should stop speaking English and start speaking Irish. I wish all of Ireland will speak Irish.

Irish would have an easier time if it didn't hold on to syllables no longer spoken in their spelling. There's an actual linguistic term for that that - several languages have the same problem, but it ends up making the language harder to learn for non-native speakers. Since there's no impetus beyond the language's beauty to learn it, and it's difficult to learn, no one who didn't grow up speaking it bothers to learn it. That's a death spiral for a language.
What a beautiful song. The language sounds as something romantic. And more, there's a bagpipe, the only instrument that really touches my heart so deeply.
Hi there are several types of pipes across Europe. Scottish ones are bagpipes. However these are not bagpipes in this song, they are the Irish Uileann pipes
@@shanemolloy6873 Uilleann Pipes ARE bagpipes. The term bagpipes refer to a broad class of instruments which use enclosed reeds fed from a constant reservoir of air in the form of a bag. Uilleann Pipes have bags which the piper presses with his or her elbow. The well-known Scottish version is actually called the Great Highland Bagpipes. There is another lesser known Scottish bagpipe called the Lowland Pipes. There are many types of bagpipes, from the aforementioned Scottish ones, to the Irish Uilleann Pipes, the Northumbrian Smallpipes of England, the Musette de Cour and the Cabrette in France, the Polish Koziol Czarny, the Bulgarian Gaida, The Spanish Gaita, the Latvian Dūdas, the Turkish Tulum, the Greek Tsampouna, The Italian variant of that called the Zampogna, to the other side of the world in Southern India where you will find the Sruti Upanga in Tamil Nadu, and in Northern India the Mashak. Of these are bagpipes. They all look alike.
Enya: "In reference to ‘Na Laetha Geal M’Oige’, for example, it would be difficult to sing that in any other language, because of the particular Gaeilge phrasing it has." The Irish/Gaeilge language is incredible. Just listening to these words, they really have some power. For example the Irish version of the 'Stroms in Africa' from the same album, gives you so all kinds of feels. The English one feels flat in comparison.
By far the best Enya song esp. if you understand the Irish language.Reminds me of my own laetha geal m'oige. An incredibly beautiful Irish childhood spent in the equally incredibly beautiful Irish countryside .Unforgettable days and I'm not just being nostalgic.Enya,go raimh mile maith agat.

I adore this music. Enya's song is amazingly beautiful. I could listen to it over and over again. Enya's music sends me into a world of peaceful bliss. Thanks for sharing this video. Peace be with you.
E perchè no, anche i bretoni in francia.

What she sings about is her youth is past and she is sad and remembering her bright youth. (borrowed her explaining from other video, I do not not know the language as well)

Language makes us children of a place. The feeling of belonging is touched by each syllable emitted above all in the songs. May each one of us, be anywhere on this planet, be able to understand the reason for our passage here, because, who knows, one day we will speak a single language and emit a single feeling, that of love, in the fullest of vibrations! PS. I miss u Éire.
How would you like it if I told you (and I'm not kidding) Enya does everything herself - and I do mean everything (in regards to all the musical instruments & vocals).

The lack of a phonetic spelling system was a serious contributor. Mongolian had the same same problem until they switched to the Cyrillic alphabet. Sylllables no longer pronounced are appended to words, making the language difficult to say, even if you have a translation guide..
It should be noted that the classical Mongolian alphabet is intricate and beautiful, but the refusal to change spellings to match the way people spoke led to its demise.
Unfortunately many English speakers have had an "English Ueber Alles" attitude. The destruction of the Irish language and the shaming of the people who speak it is part of the centuries' long genocide that the English have only recently acknowledged. So don't whine about people putting down English. It is not in peril like the Celtic languages it has steamrolled over.
@@peternolan4107 You are 100% right. Anglo-saxons expand their "democracy" around the world/ As a result - no indigenious languages, no national cultures/ By the way English is not at all beautiful phonetically. It cannot express the nuances of words like ancient Greek, German or Russian

An bealach mór a bhí romham anonn
Bhí sé i ndán domh go mbeinn...
Na focal as Gaeilge.
Ag amharc tré m'óige
Is mé bhí sámh
Gan eolas marbh
Bhí mé óg san am,
Anois, táim buartha
's fad ar shiúil an lá.
Ochón 's ochón ó.
Na laetha geal m'óige
Bhí siad lán de dhóchas
An bealach mór a bhí romham anonn
Bhí sé I ndán domh go mbeinn, slán, slán.
Anois, táim buartha
's fad ar shiúil an lá.
Ochón 's ochón ó.

Na Laetha Geal m'Óige: "The Bright Days of my Youth." Go h-anmhaith!
Precioso 💖❤️
This song is also the picture of the lament of my life.
I wish more Irish was would embrace their mother tongue
What she sings about is her youth is past and she is sad and remembering her bright youth. (borrowed her explaining from other video, I do not not know the language as well)
I heard Enya sing in Gaelic once before. One song here and ya got me. I subscribed and turned on the bell as well. If that be a pub at the end I was so lookin' forward to being takin' in. . . . . .then to me let down you stopped. Oh well. 😩. Thank you for uploading this video.
That is her late father Leo Brennan's pub in Gweedore Donegal
This is my favorite song. Enya i love you♥️
Language makes us children of a place.
Excelsa melodia
It's soul stirring. I would love to b know the meaning in English, but I would it would sound nearly as beautiful.
I love it Enya you are the best💗💗💗💗
How would you like it if I told you (and I'm not kidding) Enya does everything herself - and I do mean everything (in regards to all the musical instruments & vocals).
she is a perfectionist
the bright days of my youth...

Don't know what she says but makes my eyes leak.
This song feel so deeply
It's a very beautiful song
so sorry this beautiful language has been set aside for English..
The lack of a phonetic spelling system was a serious contributor. Mongolian had the same same problem until they switched to the Cyrillic alphabet. Sylllables no longer pronounced are appended to words, making the language difficult to say, even if you have a translation guide..
It should be noted that the classical Mongolian alphabet is intricate and beautiful, but the refusal to change spellings to match the way people spoke led to its demise.
as if English itself isn't also beautiful...while Irish is amazing, I wish people would stop belittling English.
