Nice work. A bit of history on your knife. It’s from the late 30’s or early 40’s. I have my fathers knife from that period, only made by Boulder Knife from Boulder, Colorado. Upon getting into WW2 we needed everything. The government bought commercial knives like yours (and my Dads) to issue to pilots, sailors...everybody not issued a bayonet. Individuals also bought their own. There were many makers. By 1943 the government got contracts for a similar knife going. Kabar had such a contract. Contract knives had a long 7-8 digit war material board number stamped into the tang. People think it’s a S/N but it’s actually like a part number. One easy tell is pommel. They specified steel as opposed to aluminium. Your aluminium pommel tells you it’s pre-contract.
I have my Vietnam era survival knife by Kabar. Also contract. Sadly in bad shape like that knife of yours. Its even more utilitarian with a steel butt and guard. But it still has the stacked leather washer grip.
Just thought you’d like to know. Keep on keeping on.

  • @TobinHolz

Antique people hate restoration videos because in their minds the antique is destroyed through the restoration because you lose more of the original piece the harder you work on it. An antique dealer (or buyer), normally will want the device with the patina and original sheath... even if that means the antique looks broken and nonfunctional.
The type of restoration you are doing makes the antique look new and reduces the value of the item. If this makes you happy and the piece isn't an overly valuable antique... I say go for it because it looks freaking awesome.
It's your knife! I think you made the right call... now the knife is a user!!!

Awesome work. I have that same knife and love it. Hey I have a question for you. I have the green harbor freight 1x30, and if I ever press even lightly against the area with the steel support (I forget it’s name, the platon?) when sanding the sander seems to start kind of skipping and makes a chattering sound and doesn’t sand smooth anymore

Whatever culture that makes these knives i.e. mexican, German, american, these knives never age well, mine is an old German boyscouts stag knife, the leather stacking at the base of the hilt was the first to deteriorate and now the knife wobbles in the hand. Absolutely take good care of these knives they're great when maintained!

I don't think this is a WW2 pilots knife, I'm pretty sure it's just a postwar hunting knife.
1 I don't recognize this as a pattern issued in USAAF bailout kits.
2 Union Cutlery didn't start using the Trademark across the board until 1952.
3 this appears to be a common woodcraft pattern hunting knife.
