  • Statements by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg and the President of Israel, Isaac Herzog, NATO HQ, Brussels, 26 January 2023.
    🗣 | NATO Secretary General:
    President Herzog,
    Dear Isaac,
It is a pleasure to welcome you to NATO Headquarters, and a pleasure to see you again.
    This is an historic visit.
Marking the first time that the President of Israel addresses NATO Allies in the North Atlantic Council.
This is a sign of our deepening partnership.
For almost 30 years, NATO and Israel have worked closely together in many different areas.
    Including science and technology,
    Counter-terrorism,
    Civil preparedness,
    Countering weapons of mass destruction,
Women, Peace and Security, and many more areas.
Today, I look forward to discussing ways to strengthen our cooperation further.
Including on climate change, innovation, and new technologies.
And also to discuss our support for Ukraine.
The Ukrainian people are bravely defending their homeland.
And NATO Allies and partners are helping to support their right to self-defence, as enshrined in the UN Charter.
To ensure Ukraine prevails as a sovereign, independent nation in Europe.
This is also about defending our values.
Iran is delivering support to Russia.
Including drones that are used to attack civilian infrastructure, homes and hospitals in Ukraine.
In return, Russia is stepping up its support to Iran.
And at the same time, stepping up its cooperation with other authoritarian states, such as China and North Korea.
As we see growing cooperation among authoritarian states,
it is more important than ever to stand up for freedom and democracy.
    So President Herzog,
tomorrow we will mark International Holocaust Remembrance day here at the NATO Headquarters.
To remember the unspeakable horror of the millions who suffered and died during World War Two.
    We will never forget them.
Dear Isaac, thank you again for coming. I look forward to our meeting.
And to strengthen further the cooperation between Israel and NATO.

So Israel understands Ukraine's plight, but does not condemn Russia and does not give armed aid to Ukraine. Israel sees Iran as a threat and asks NATO to join the fight against Iran. Iran is Israel's arch-enemy, and Israel has developed effective air defense systems against Iranian missiles and drones. However, Israel has not wanted to sell them to Ukraine.
Israel is carefully considering its relationship with Russia because of Syria. The relationship is working, and Russia has allowed Israel to bomb Iranian forces in Syria. Israel also has a large Russian-speaking population, which is important especially during elections.

You should remember Israel is surrounded by enemy states who wish to make it disappear from the face of earth. It has had to constantly fight the threats, not only from Iran, also from other gulf states like Syria, Yemen, Libya, Iraq and Qatar/Kuwait/Saudi-backed terrorists such as Al Queda and Hamas. Russia has been sending "advisors" and arms to middle east too and the Israelis don't want to draw their ire by condemning the Russian War in Ukraine. Russia may not b Israel's friend but they don't want them as enemy either. They already have their hands full with the enemies they already have.

We do condemn russia most of the time, the reason we decide not to give to ukraine weapons is because we don't want russia to give syria and iran advanced AA systems.

Can't comment on the actual subject matter that was discussed among the leaders, but the president's speech here seemed mostly centered around drawing attention towards the involvement of Iran and "terrorist attacks on Israel by muslims," which is the same old rhetoric that's been going on for nearly a hundred years. When I hear him talk about stability in the middle east, I can't tell if he's speaking sincerely or just talking about supporting Israel against rising powers in the middle east that they have problems with.
Don't get me wrong, there's no question that the methods of groups like Hamas are often terrible, but Israel itself has a long history of suppressing minorities with horrendous violence and much of it is fairly recent. Everyone in that conflict is at fault. It's much less clear cut than the unjust war in Ukraine.

Israel's been less than enthusiastic about supporting Ukraine. But now that their old enemy, Iran, is officially an ally of Putin, this might change (though don't hold your breath). Putin will no doubt reward Iran's timely weapons supply to Russia with nuclear technology and/or actual nukes in the not too distant future. Clever of Stoltenberg to (obliquely) press that button early in his speech. Unfortunately, however, Israel values its relations with Russia more than its relations with Ukraine. It also likes to sit on the fence, which has left a well-worn crease on its posterior. Notice how Herzog almost ignores the Ukraine issue and directs his speech at the despicability of the Iranian leadership instead.
