"Shout" would be a great next song as you'll get to hear Roland Orzabal (the guitarist) sing lead. It was a very popular song so I know you won't be disappointed!
Tears for Fears are an English pop rock band formed in 80's. Their 2 biggest hits are "Everybody Wants To Rule The World" & "Shout". They had other songs such as "Mad World", "Change", "Pale Shelter", "The Way You Are", "Mothers Talk", "Head Over Heels", "I Believe", "Sowing The Seeds Of Love", "Woman In Chains" etc.
Their second album is Songs From The Big Chair is a stunning album. It’s sounds like a greatest hits album. Every song is killer. They were huge in the ‘80’s.
TFF are such an underrated band. Okay mostly we knew the hits from them, but these are great tunes, have a perfect production and a marvellous voice, too. But the more unknown songs and deep cuts are worth the listen.
Musician and singer here. I play piano 🎹, guitar 🎸, bass guitar, percussion and harmonica. Written by Chris Hughes, Ian Stanley and Roland Orzabal. Released in 1985. Classic 🙌 1980s song 🎵. 40 years 🎂 next year, 2025! 😎 Polyrhythm? No. This song still is in 4/4. A triplet on the synth starts. Hughes programmed a shuffle on a drum machine. Hughes suggested that Orzabal strum 2 chords 2 times throughout Verse 1 and Verse 2. This got him bored! 💤 😴. He preferred additional keyboards, backing vocal and Guitar Solo 1. Yeah they are 1989 band and played all the time on MTV. i like your enthusiasm during your reactions. I too am a drummer now 64 years old so this was music I was listening to back when it came out. I still have my 1970 Rodgers/Slingerland drum kit from back then although sadly it does not get played by me due to life circumstances. But I'll always be a drummer.
Nice to meet you my fellow drum bro! 🥁 You got a beautiful kit there! That’s awesome!! Thanks for the kind words and so glad you are enjoying the channel! Have a great one! 😄
Tears for Fears were the 80's they were everywhere! The Hurting 1st album 83 3rd single Mad World they gained a following. Songs from the Big Chair were their biggest album. 10 million in sales. They were part of the 2nd British Invasion. Awesome, band!
At first I wasn't sure what to think of this one as I was busy at work. Radio was on and I was busy as a one armed wallpaper hanger lol. Later on that day I had the time to listen to it. Great song!
These guys blew through the 80's like a beautiful storm. So many great hits, and as a GenX part of the landscape of my youth. One of the first albums I got from Columbia house...lol
Oh yeah, one of the standout bands of the '80's. 'Shout', 'Mad World', 'Head Over Heels', so many hits but all their albums were amazing (still have every one on original vinyl). They were Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith, the two singers you saw, and they had various other musicians play with them throughout their career, which is still going by the way. Hope you get to hear some more of them. Loved the reaction. ✌❤
Bad Mans Song is my fav from them check it out live its the song that changed my mind about them From a 80s radio band to holy shit they are great They were a friends fav band i found out why after hearing Bad Man Keep rockin dude
Band has fantastic sound, huge group of the 80’s and then again in 2022. At the end of the 80’s early 90’s Kurt moved to California and Roland continued to live in the UK. They had a huge fight, neither one of them talked to one another for like 12-14 years. Then one day out of the blue, Roland called Kurt, after his wife passed away and since then they’ve gotten back together, introduced a new album in 2022 (The Tipping Point) and started touring again. I just missed their tour last year. I hope they tour again, fantastic band.
Tears For Fears are unique in that both guys sing lead vocals. You've just heard Curt doing a great job singing Everybody Wants To Rule The World, but a lot of people would say that Roland has the more powerful voice. Songs to check out with Curt singing lead, Mad World, Change, Pale Shelter, Advice For The Young At Heart, Break The Man, Long Long Long Time, songs to check out with Roland on lead vocals, Shout, Head Over Heels, Woman In Chains, Sowing The Seeds Of Love, Badman's Song, Closest Thing To Heaven and Rivers Of Mercy. TFF released a new album in 2022 called The Tipping Point, the title track is about the death of Roland's wife in 2017, both Curt and Roland sing dual lead. Last week they released another new single with Roland singing lead, the song is called The Girl That I Call Home and is taken from their album due to be released on October 25th and entitled Songs For A Nervous Planet, the album is essentially a 2cd live album with 4 new studion tracks.
Bith have extremely silky smooth voices... but I would agree that Roland's voice has a little more low register oomph under it. I can't figure out to describe it. Almost like there are bass undertones to his voice even while matching the higher tenor.
Blows my mind 🤯 that you don't know this song! I thought everyone & their aunty had heard this. This song has to be one of the top 80s tunes. HUGE, HUGE song. Loved it back then, love it still today. ❤🎼
The guy in pink is curt smith. The guy in blue with the guitar is roland orzabal. They are tears for fears.they write their own songs. They met at school in bath where curt lived and where Roland's family moved to from Portsmouth when he was in primary school. They formed the band in 81 whrn they were 20. The album this came out on came out in 85. There are lots of songs to listen to but i would suggest mad world. It came out before this and the sound is totally different. After you react to it i would suggest the cover by gary jules that was used for movie donnie darko.a totally different take on it. Of course being an 80's band means the videos are part of the experience of the songs and creative as that's what the 80's were known for.the video era.
80's . Singer very unique? ,Yes! Everyone wanted to sound different, who would of thought? Synthesizers made the bands sound full. 80's was all about Dance songs and having fun! Dance clubs were very popular and everywhere. Great reaction!
That's an 80s signature song (mid 80s). Simple Minds had a comparable Sound ("Don't you forget about me" or "Alive and Kicking") Other great songs are Pale Shelter, Mad World, Change, Shout, Head over Heels, Seeds of Love and not to forget one of their newest songs (2023) The Tipping Point.
The entire song is in 4/4. what throwing you off with the beginning guitar intro is that he's playing syncopated triplets. At the start it leaves it ambiguous where 1 is so when the drums start it is between the triplets played by the guitar.
Nothing can beat the 80ies! You wanna hear some more? So listen and react to "Shout!", "Mad world" (also re-interpreted by Gary Jules!), and "Woman in chains". Masterpieces, all of them!
2 songwriters, 2 lead singers. t4f were big in mid 80s, thoughtful lyrics n gd musos, try shout, mad world, head ovr heels, women in chains, pale shelter, sowing v seeds of love,
Yes part of the drumming was from a programed drum machine that they used and got some of the rhyme from Simple Minds (water front) and then Michael Jackson used it in (The Way You Make Me Feel) a few years later! Surprised you've never heard of them or this song, this guys have to many hits to recommend so I'll leave it to other viewers lol but anyway enjoyed your reaction!
The new wave pop revolution was happening back then. Tears for Fear fell in between. MTV was in the middle, playing hard to soft rock, new wave utilizing techno & synthesizers.
Can I give you a suggestion by Tears For Fears that I can guarantee you will absolutely love? Especially as a musician. It's one of those perfect songs that you never forget after you hear it for the first time. It's got incredible bass, iconic guitar sounds, and killer vocals. It's titled "Raoul and the king of spain" I can assure you, it will instantly become one of your favourites.
My thimbleful of musical knowledge hears Triplets in 2/2 time? Probably not even close. I loved that you mention Metric Modulation. I have a son-in-law who was a percussion professor, and he did some teaching on that subject.
Great band and this was one of the defining songs of the 80's. They did another version called Everybody want's to run the world as the anthem for Sport Aid which was a global 10k charity run following on from Live Aid - I still have the T-shirt! I don't think they've made a bad track on all their albums, The Hurting and Songs from the big chair are pretty much perfect imo. Sowing the seeds of love from their 3rd album is a real trip with other notable tracks - Woman in chains, Advice for the young at heart and Tears roll down. Cheers
This video location is along Interstate 10 near Indio, California. The dinosaurs in the background have been there since I was a kid, around 50 years ago. You used to be able to go up into them, maybe you still can, and one of the dinosaurs had a gift shop inside it. A scene from Pee-Wee's Big Adventure was filmed there, too.
Wikipedia-In an interview with Mix magazine, Hughes said that "as a piece of recording history, [the song is] bland as hell". Orzabal's unimpressed reaction to the track during their songwriting sessions prompted Hughes to convince him to record it, in a calculated effort to garner American chart success. After completing their sessions at 6 p.m., they would spend an hour reviewing each recording many times; this helped Orzabal to create the song's guitar figure and change its title. Orzabal acknowledged that the shuffle beat used in the song was "alien" to their way of writing music, stating it was "jolly rather than square and rigid in the manner of "Shout", but it continued the process of becoming more extrovert." Curt Smith, the song's lead singer, said the themes were "quite serious - it's about everybody wanting power, about warfare and the misery it causes.
Also without checking your list another band to me that was similar to Tears is Simple Minds they do the Breakfast Club song Don't You (Forget about me.)
In answer to your question, EWTRTW is in 12/8 and a tempo of 112 bpm. I suggest Head Over Heels” next and react to the video as well, which was entertaining to see on MTV back in those days. 🙂 These guys were the soundtrack of my high school years, I graduated in 1986. Both Roland and Kurt have similar voices imo and blend very well. They have had a very long, successful career and released their latest album just a couple of years ago I think. I know the song I did hear from it “No Small Thing” was outstanding.
Love that you found this another one of my faves, Kurt and Roland are amazing, Please listen to my demons from their album the tipping point. I believe the original working title was everybody wants to destroy the world.
It’s been transcribed as 12/8, although I’ve also seen 4/4 with lots of triplets. The bass and snare really lay down a solid 4/4 feel if you ignore the hi-hat. Then it’s a question of whether you transcribe the hi-hat (and guitar riff) in 12/8 or 4/4 triplets.
A couple of years back a guy called Ted Yoder went relatively viral for playing this song on hammered dulcimer and the band actually stopped by his place and sang it with him. It's a fun little video.
It's in 4/4...it may ALL be drum programmed. I've played this live about dozen times and it's tough to maintain that shuffle beat smoothly with those accents on the hats and the constant steady beat staying in the pocket.
Even though my thing is Rock and Metal I also loved listening to this stuff too during the 80's when I needed that break from the intensity of rock and roll. The music during that period was just so different (I know we always are biased to our generation) but that period mid 70's through the 80's was just great. I had taken drumming lessons when I was about 10 and I didn't catch on and didn't put the work in so that was on me I never did go back. You being a drummer is cool for me to watch your vids when you point out drumming parts. I am 57 and lately just started listening to music with more than a tin ear LOL I think this Holiday season I will treat myself to a decent set of headphones for audio as I am a gamer and I use cheap Xbox headphones with Dolby Atmos but they are ok for gaming not so good for audio. Have a good day Steven
Have a great day and thanks for hanging out! Such great music that came out of that era! Definitely get you some good quality headphones as it will make the listening experience so much better! 😁
Their name alone is pretty perfect. They were very popular in the 80's and still to this day. They do have other songs: Sowing the Seeds of Love, Shout, etc. This band had its own sound. Their songs have a habit of becoming a little bit likable!...chuckle with that one.
I would suggest you not listen to "Sowing the Seeds of Love" until you have heard "I Am the Walrus" and "All the Young Dudes" so you can hear what they're doing melding those musical ideas.
Yes lol, this is 80s. One of the decades biggest hits. I almost thought you were trolling when you said you've never heard this cause it's one that for a time you had to live under a rock to not know about this one haha. SHOUT, Sowing the Seeds of Love and HEAD OVER HEELS are three more songs you should check out of theirs.
Haha 🤣 Not trolling! I listened to a very limited number of bands and alot of rap/hip-hop growing up. Having a blast listening to some great tunes and meeting some awesome people! Thanks for swinging by and have a great one! 😁
I am def the wrong person to be asking those questions. Something poly...polyester? 🤣😂 I'll stick to what I do know. This was a huge hit and they had quite a few more, just don't remember. And secondly, we had a friend that kinda looked like the lead singer and he hated when we said it, mentioned it to strangers, anything. Plus the songs were everywhere!🤣🤣
Whoa man. Awesome reaction. You must check out Badman's song or Woman in Chains. They're both even better than this jam. Welcome to the tears to fears club!
I'll ask my cover band drummer friends if they know. Maybe the guitar is playing half note triplets against 4/4 and the drummer comes in with eighth note triplets over 4/4 (12/8)? Or is that what you said? I'm just a trumpeter!
@@kenrobins6262 Awesome! Yeah maybe my ear is deceiving me but I think that guitar part may be in 3 over 2 and then it cycles around! 🤷🏻♂️ I just hit things so what do I know! 🤣😂 Thanks and have a great day!
Just a note, MTV was new , so videos sometimes didn't match the songs, it was artistic expression of director..some hit some missed...but the music lasts.

"Shout" would be a great next song as you'll get to hear Roland Orzabal (the guitarist) sing lead. It was a very popular song so I know you won't be disappointed!
Hats in 3's, kick & snare in 4's - so subtle. Tears For Fears are probably the best pop/rock band of the 80's - great songs and 2 lead vocalists.

Also anything from the Tipping point
Absolutely one of the greatest songs of all time, IMO. Unique vocals, great groove and great solo. Stands the test of time.
I can't tell you how popular this single was in the mid 80s, it broke through the regular top 40 POP ,...it still stands today.
Next year, it'll be 40 years old...but actually, it NEVER gets old. Neither does the album.
40 years young.
Check out some of their concert videos. They are a really good live band.
Shout, head over heels, sowing the seeds of love
Manny Elias is the drummer. They have two singers, Kurt is singing here and Roland , the Guitarist sings
Their second album is Songs From The Big Chair is a stunning album. It’s sounds like a greatest hits album. Every song is killer. They were huge in the ‘80’s.
MONSTER hit from the 80's..was everywhere
Love Tears For Fears! Shout, Mad World, Head Over Heels, Sowing The Seeds Of Love, and released in 2022 The Tipping Point❤️❤️❤️
TFF are such an underrated band. Okay mostly we knew the hits from them, but these are great tunes, have a perfect production and a marvellous voice, too. But the more unknown songs and deep cuts are worth the listen.

Rulers of the 80’s….Great drums on “ Shout”.
Shout is another song of theirs that is arranged really interestingly and also has a cool solo at the end. Thanks for the video!
"they had to fade it" refers to a previous song they recorded. Got to do "Shout" and "Head Over Heels" (official videos).

Everybody wants to go to war
This is one of Rick Beato's favorite songs to analyze.
@@irmaoksanen6830 Oh really?! I have to check that out! Is it on his channel?
It’s been transcribed as 12/8, although I’ve also seen 4/4 with lots of triplets.
The bass and snare really lay down a solid 4/4 feel if you ignore the hi-hat. Then it’s a question of whether you transcribe the hi-hat (and guitar riff) in 12/8 or 4/4 triplets.
fantastic group from the UK
A couple of years back a guy called Ted Yoder went relatively viral for playing this song on hammered dulcimer and the band actually stopped by his place and sang it with him. It's a fun little video.
It's in 4/4...it may ALL be drum programmed. I've played this live about dozen times and it's tough to maintain that shuffle beat smoothly with those accents on the hats and the constant steady beat staying in the pocket.
Yes. Linn Drum Machine on most of the record.
Welcome to the Tears For Fears rabbit hole, the soundtrack of my younger years that never went away 😂
I'm hearing "cut time", 2/2.
It was a simple 12/8 shuffle rock shuffle. Nothing tricky about
Even though my thing is Rock and Metal I also loved listening to this stuff too during the 80's when I needed that break from the intensity of rock and roll.
I am 57 and lately just started listening to music with more than a tin ear LOL
I think this Holiday season I will treat myself to a decent set of headphones for audio as I am a gamer and I use cheap Xbox headphones with Dolby Atmos but they are ok for gaming not so good for audio. Have a good day Steven
Have a great day and thanks for hanging out! Such great music that came out of that era! Definitely get you some good quality headphones as it will make the listening experience so much better! 😁
mad world by tears for fears
You should have checked out the live version they did a few years ago.
Their name alone is pretty perfect. They were very popular in the 80's and still to this day. They do have other songs: Sowing the Seeds of Love, Shout, etc. This band had its own sound. Their songs have a habit of becoming a little bit likable!...chuckle with that one.
Tears For Fears released 1985
I would suggest you not listen to "Sowing the Seeds of Love" until you have heard "I Am the Walrus" and "All the Young Dudes" so you can hear what they're doing melding those musical ideas.
❤❤❤❤❤
12/8.
Lopez Christopher Perez Anthony Williams Michelle
Count from the first note and you'll see it's all in 4 but the opening fill starts at an off time
Yes lol, this is 80s.
@@setonhillstudios I would've thought the mullets, ponytails, preppy clothing and synthswould have been a dead giveaway as to the decade lmao.
@@DickTrickle-d6w 🤣😂🤣
I am def the wrong person to be asking those questions. Something poly...polyester? 🤣😂 I'll stick to what I do know. This was a huge hit and they had quite a few more, just don't remember. And secondly, we had a friend that kinda looked like the lead singer and he hated when we said it, mentioned it to strangers, anything. Plus the songs were everywhere!🤣🤣
😂🤣😂
Ok I investigated...it's a drum machine with the drummer playing over the top of the sequenced shuffle. Sorry for all the comments!
$1.45 per gallon at that gas station......lets get back to "drill baby drill"!
its in 12/8 time.. also known as a shuffle beat..
Whoa man. Awesome reaction. You must check out Badman's song or Woman in Chains. They're both even better than this jam. Welcome to the tears to fears club!
Appreciate it and thanks for hanging out!
Two words: Badman's Song
I'm hearing 6/8 and 12/8.
I’m still hearing that guitar part in the intro and the turnaround playing overtop of that in maybe a 3:2 rhythm? Could be tripping though! 🤣
Similar to Duran Duran vocally and musically
It is real, groovy MUSIC forget 'samples' etc!
In the 80's. Many songs they would like to hit on the off beat so to speak. It's 4/4 time. Just a type of syncopation.
Sorry this isn't good.... As a bartender if you play this shit in my bar I Hit the skip button...and put on some Ac/Dc or some Kiss
🤣😂🤣
And you’re deaf. And that’s coming from someone who has dedicated his life to KISS.
