I would appreciate a copy of your LUTs. Your video was the 1st to pop up in relation to Color Grading + Shotcut and has been a big step in getting me going so thank you!
Thanks for the video! 1-minute summary: 1. Enable the Video Waveform and Vector scopes 2. Add a White Balance filter and choose the white from the image. Tip: have something white on your person [that you can show to the camera at a point you don't need to be in the final cut] 3. Add a Color Grading filter which you'll use to adjust exposure: 3a. Drag down the Shadows slider until the "stalactites" in the Video Waveform almost touch the bottom 3b. Drag up the Highlights slider until the "stalagmites" in the Video Waveform almost touch the top 3c. Drag up or down the Midtones for the preferred look 4. Add another Color Grading filter and tweak the colors to minimize the white blob in the Vector scope, especially if any part of it touches the ticks about 1/3 towards the center from each of the 6 colors 5. Or, use predefined LUTs (LookUp Tables).
UPDATE: The order does matter, but it should be "TOP-DOWN." It is best to match the order of operations to the stacking order of top-down to best achieve the anticipated outcome.
@@BenEspanto Great to read this. This video of yours is very inspiring. But yes, it made me think greatly why you insert filters and move new ones from bottom to top. It made me assume Shotcut was applying filters in the reverse order you add them. I made some tests to find out it is not the case. Now it makes sense: you first balance whites and stretch contrast before applying grading. The other way should be more uncertain and probably what it defeats more I think is white balance if grading/LUT apply some tonal shift. So if you can, make it more explicit in your description, your moving filters in the stack advised during the video should be ignored.
This is my third viewing of your videos, and I am again amazed by your presentation skills. The pace is perfect for the absorption of the information. The repetitions and reviews make the videos learning experiences, not just "finding-out-and-forgetting" events. Repeating the process over 3 videos helps retention considerably.
Will this video hit 40K views?!?! Yay! I never thought I'd reach that! This is officially my most watched tutorial. Thank you for your support! FOR THE FREE LUTS: I am giving the LUTs away for free. All I ask is you follow my instructions. If you go directly to the link, Instagram, or any other means, you will not be given access to the files. I only follow up here on TH-cam. Thank you
@@BenEspanto I just updated it. My version was behind. 19. 10. 20, Probably lacked ton of features, because this new one looks a lot more packed. Thank you
I recently finished my one year subscription with Adobe. Picked it up during the pandemic at a discount. It was nice to have but I couldn't justify the cost when there were open source software titles that could handle my amatuer level video projects. I record guitar playing under overhead colored lights with floor level lighting that changes with the beat of the music. I also dabble in photogrammetry and macro photography using a focus stacking method. The only way I learned how to use more than the basic functions of any software was by watching TH-cam videos. It's videos like these that are produced and made available by volunteers that are educating the world with their expertise. It is probably one of the best uses of the internet in my view. I have been asked over the years how I knew how to do all the cool stuff I do, from telescopes, photographing galaxies to building a CNC and milling art. My answer used to be 'They hid it in a book' Today it is 'TH-cam dude!! where you been?' Thank you for creating this series on Shotcut.
Great video showing how to use colour grading in Shotcut and found the discussion on LUTS most intriguing. Can you please send me the LUTS that you created. Thanks

I've been watching a dozen videos about setting colors and finally found a video which tells it all in simple, clear and understandable way. Thank you !
This is how I personally color grade my videos. I know it's pretty simplistic, but it gets the job done. I'd love to hear if you have a better method of doing it
I feel this in my soul bro. I want to sit at my camper and quickly get the days drone footage, boating, beaching etc presentable so I can show my friends, post on social media etc. This is great, subbed, thanks!
Hands down best TH-cam video on color grading using Shotcut! I prefer "efficient" versus "lazy" hahaha. Look forward to watching the rest of your Shotcut tutorials. Please email me your LUTs to . Much appreciated.

Hi Ben. Thanks for this - another great video. EXCEPT, there is a problem with the White Balance part, which is particularly evident in your fishing video. White balance is supposed to be about setting a neutral white. So, if you take the WB from the piece of paper you have stuck to the back of your bag, you will get a skewed result, because you are standing under a tree which is giving that piece of paper a greenish / yellowish colour cast. You can easily see this by looking at the lower part of the sky area in the distance, in the area between the tree which is behind the white gazebo, and the tree to its left. When you click on the piece of paper to use as your reference WB, you can see the area of sky between those two trees has a yellowish pall. Not usual for a day like this. I acknowledge that the overall look of the scene is pleasing, but that patch of sky, and the one to the left of your cap have a very definite colour cast which is not pleasing to the eye. Even with your LUT, those sky areas still have that colour cast. Is it possible to mask those areas and adjust / correct the colours within them? Or, is it possible to take the WB from another white on-screen? If that is the case, you could have a photo of a WB card, bring that up, and click on that with the WB picker.
@@BenEspanto Agreed. but there is no part of your video that provides a neutral white (not neutral colour). As I explained above, you can actually see that the white card on your knapsack was not providing a neutral white (it had a greenish/yellowish colour cast, because you were standing under the green leaves of the tree, and that is why the clouds were affected by that same colour cast). The best way of doing this is to buy a White Balance card, take a photo of it, and then import that in to your video project so that you can use the colour picker to sample that white.

I was using contrast, light and hue and brightness settings to try to get rid of that washed out look. I played around with colour balance, but I didn't try out the sliders. I think it's an easier way to fix a white washed photo. thanks.
Hello Ben, as I already mentioned in a previos comentary, it's nice to follow your videos on Shotcut. It´s makes Shotcut easily understood. I would like to ask a question, Is there a color grading program for fotos much like Shotcut? As you can appreciate, we all have old color fotos that need color grading to at least bring them back almost what they were. We all don't have photoshop nor the time to learn how to use it. Your answer is much appreciated. Many thanks.

Ive been using alot of open source video editing programs. So far ive been using openshot and shotcut. The only problem with shotcut is theres not alot of good tutorials in youtube. This by far is the best channel for any good shotcut turorials. Thank you sir. Subscribed and I would like to have your LUTs please 🙏. Great video tutorial. But I am bit confused about the order of effects. Are the filters applied from top to bottom or from bottom to top? Because if do the white balance and exposure adjustments to the original video and then you put the LUT before these effects, are they still working correctly as the LUT is changing the colors?
I just started on the journey of video editing for TH-cam and was struggling with the concept of color grading. Your videos are helping a lot. I'd appreciate being able to test your LUTS.

Thank you. very informative to this newbie video editor! Our church has had to move to TH-cam worship due to the pandemic and I'm the volunteer video editor so I'm learning lots very quickly. One comment, from my still photography experience would be that picking something that's suppose to be white for setting the whitepoint doesn't always work because it may be blown out already (i.e. RGB 255,255,255). You can use gray to avoid this. Classically this is an 18% gray card that we used to use with a lightmeter, (you can buy them) but you don't need to be that precise. Most any gray with no color tones in it will work. If you would be kind enough to send me your LUT I'd like to check it out. Thanks again.
The sheet of paper I use to white balance against on my person is actually an 18% graycard, but not everyone has it on hand, so in a pinch, choose an area, that's not white, but SUPPOSED to be white. Despite that, when a video is already blown out, it's really hard to bring it back down unless you have a very expensive camera that kept all of the exposure information. In any case, this is a tutorial for beginners who wouldn't know any of this information. Kindly give me an email address I can send the LUTs to.
Great tutorial . atm I am just working out shortcut editing and am not up to colour grading yet for my videos . will do colour grading in future videos once i get quicker at doing all the other editing . then down the track when i become more proficient .i am going to come back to this vid .. This is great - Thanks! Is there any way to mask or select a colored area, say dead yellowish grass, and slightly alter that color only? In your video here for example, the brownish grass to a greener tone? Long story, but I just downloaded Shotcut to my iMac (because Davinci Resolve will no longer open on my computer). So I really appreciate this video.
Hi, can this be applied to a one-shot photo, too? I would like to enhance a flame which has lost its gleam from transfering and cutting into newer videos? I love your LUTs. Can I get your LUT's with your answer, please? thx.

I would appreciate a copy of your LUTs. Your video was the 1st to pop up in relation to Color Grading + Shotcut and has been a big step in getting me going so thank you!
Thanks for the video! 1-minute summary:
1. Enable the Video Waveform and Vector scopes
2. Add a White Balance filter and choose the white from the image. Tip: have something white on your person [that you can show to the camera at a point you don't need to be in the final cut]
3. Add a Color Grading filter which you'll use to adjust exposure:
3a. Drag down the Shadows slider until the "stalactites" in the Video Waveform almost touch the bottom
3b. Drag up the Highlights slider until the "stalagmites" in the Video Waveform almost touch the top
3c. Drag up or down the Midtones for the preferred look
4. Add another Color Grading filter and tweak the colors to minimize the white blob in the Vector scope, especially if any part of it touches the ticks about 1/3 towards the center from each of the 6 colors
5. Or, use predefined LUTs (LookUp Tables).
Hopefully it helps you!

UPDATE:
The order does matter, but it should be "TOP-DOWN." It is best to match the order of operations to the stacking order of top-down to best achieve the anticipated outcome.
is this mean the first one (white balance) should be at the top?
@@azuranjani yes. White balance should be at the top
I've just done my first colour grading ever. Following your video. It turned out looking nice. Thanks.
Glad it helped!
I'd love to see it!
This is my third viewing of your videos, and I am again amazed by your presentation skills. The pace is perfect for the absorption of the information. The repetitions and reviews make the videos learning experiences, not just "finding-out-and-forgetting" events. Repeating the process over 3 videos helps retention considerably.

Wonderful! Do you have a tutorial about how to create a LUT in shotcut?
Unfortunately, you cannot create LUTs inside of Shotcut. You would need to use an external program.
My answer used to be 'They hid it in a book' Today it is 'TH-cam dude!! where you been?'
Thank you for creating this series on Shotcut.

You can take a sample from any part of the video that provides a neutral color
@@BenEspanto Agreed. but there is no part of your video that provides a neutral white (not neutral colour).
As I explained above, you can actually see that the white card on your knapsack was not providing a neutral white (it had a greenish/yellowish colour cast, because you were standing under the green leaves of the tree, and that is why the clouds were affected by that same colour cast). The best way of doing this is to buy a White Balance card, take a photo of it, and then import that in to your video project so that you can use the colour picker to sample that white.

Thank you. very informative to this newbie video editor!
Kindly give me an email address I can send the LUTs to.
it was easy to follow. thank you for the video.
You're welcome
Great tutorial . atm I am just working out shortcut editing and am not up to colour grading yet for my videos . will do colour grading in future videos once i get quicker at doing all the other editing . then down the track when i become more proficient .i am going to come back to this vid .. If you don't mind maybe you can make a video tutorial how to make those luts.
Thank you.
You can't make them on Shotcut. You would need an external program to do so

Unfortunately there is no way to do selective masks so far. Not in the software itself
@@BenEspanto Still, this is really nice software, and I definitely appreciate your helpful videos.
Hi, can this be applied to a one-shot photo, too? I would like to enhance a flame which has lost its gleam from transfering and cutting into newer videos? I love your LUTs. Can I get your LUT's with your answer, please? thx.
