- Here is a insight into the 1996 Honda Touring car. Absolutely stunning car and full of tech!
Huge thanks to John Danby Racing and the owner Paul for the day.
Track: Brands Hatch Indy
Hey everyone, thank you so much for the engagement and comments. I am aware that I made a mistake with what engine is in the car. I was simply going off the info from a team member which turned out to be wrong. Apologies. H22 indeed it is.
It Is an h22 destroked, to match the maximum liters for the category. The head was also turned 180 degrees for better efficiency
@@Andrea_eTiyeah turning the head around is bonkers to me. It puts the intake side towards the front of the car. Plus the whole moving it down and back thing, making it a front-mid engine car. I'd love to know more about the engineering that went into it all. The suspension, engine, brakes, adjustable roll bars, all of it.
Team member instead of the engineer
@@Patrick94GSR prequel to the K 😁
@@jkatman what? The H engine has very little in common with the K series engines.
Those were the days, watch the racing on the telly box, then straight onto the Playstation to recreate the magic 😂😂
I know! I wish we had a BTCC game today. Really is such a shame
@@jakehillracing Toca Touring Cars was sublime.....compared to modern SIM racing, very basic but for it's time, a true classic and a proper challenge.... Knockhill in the wet anyone?
@@jakehillracing I was really hoping Motorsport Games were going to come good, but alas, it's dead in the water now! 😢
@@jakehillracing Codemasters making a new ToCA Touring Cars is my ultimate gaming dream… that game was my childhood!
It's the engine sounds they managed to nail on the original toca game that did it for me 🎶
When Honda Accords were still slim and agile enough to be used as a base for race cars, the more recent generations of Accords are like freaking land yachts.
I had the last generation v6 coupe, it had a peppy little j series in it but yeah it wasn’t exactly something you sat in and went “yeah this just needs suspension and some tires and we’re set”
@user-gz9tq9fo5bThe 2021 Accord Sport Touring 2.0T is a sleeper. People are upgrading them to 300-450 WHP, lol. Far from land yachts. Electronic front diff as well if memory serves. Defo agree with you.
10th gen Accords are much bigger, but somehow they are still really light, around 1500 kilos. The 2.0T 10-speed DCT variant is surprisingly fast and nimble in the corners, even stock. It still has that Honda feel. I really don't understand why it's not sold in Europe, it's better than all the competition and even much more expensive cars.
Is the nostalgia speaking for you.
The 7th gen is superior to the 6th gen, both mechanically and aerodynamically. The body lines give it a bit more agile look and feeling, the k24a3 is base for any tuners nowadays, being one the most iconic honda engines, and the weight is not bad either for a manual Honda Accord CL9.
The most chunkiest and under-performing Honda Accord I personally believe to be the 8th gen.

Aaand thats why we dont have cool hondas because we have cool škodas though, and i swear to god, i saw a fabia or scala or whatever it was, that pulled like a mf, i was trying to chase it down with a mercedes c230k which is no slouch, up there and even faster than a gti, yet, no, it went like crazy, i gave up the chase and and gave him all fours and flashed while i was still in his visible field, waay behind, stock looking base model is what it was, perfect for a sleeper! Godspees little škoda, may your roads be empty and your rear lights be seen by plenty, oh mighty little Škoda
Modern day BTCC cars just don't have the magic and soul of the 90s super tourers.
Totally agree. However I do still feel the racing is just as good most of the time. But we don’t have 10m budgets like the 90’s
I see the problem with size of today cars. On 90s cars you can feel lightness and steering abilities while new ones are just inflated liveless vehicles.
Like F1, it’s just follow the leader . All cars look the same. I gave up watching several seasons ago.
The super touring era was such a great time to grow up watching racing. This and the Primera were my 2 favourite cars
Awesome Primera feature to come later this year
I agree. I loved it!
The old touring cars where the best 👍
Great content and awesome car but as stated the engine isn’t a b18 it’s a reverse head f20 I’m pretty sure which is basically a de stroked h22 with the cylinder head turned 180 degrease to allow for forward facing intake.. engineering greatness…
Yes, you are correct. The engine is destroked H22A to 2.0 liters. Reverse cylinder head was done by Neil Brown Engineering in UK.
@@edwardclark8808And guess what they did with the next engine evolution in the K series, flipped the head around so that the intake is on the front and the headers can have a better flow out the back. This car/engine design literally changed how Honda did engine design.
Yes, the K series design is big step forward for dohc VTEC engines with VTC on the intake camshafts. The mostly stock K20A powertrain took 1-2 place in the 24 hrs of tokachi race in the 2.0 liter class with Beam Racing Integra Type R. Also, Mugen used destroked H22A engine for Formula 3 engine called MF204.
Also, of that vintage b engines were in civic and integrated whereas h engines were in prelude and accord
It’s more likely he engineered is rotated, not head. These are a slant engine and they slant rearward , it now slants forwards indicating an engine reversal probably to accomodate the sequential transmission. It would also be convenient for heat control. Furthermore, can drive area, rotate head 180, ??
DO YOU KNOW HOW MUCH I NEEDED THIS VIDEO? Seriously, I was searching for 1996 HONDA Super Touring Accord last month because I was thinking how awesome those cars were. And this pops up on my feed. They still are awesome!
man I love these cars. Back in the 90's, Neuspeed ran a similar version of this same Accord (yellow livery), for the VERY short-lived NATCC, driven by Randy Pobst. I can still remember seeing that car on the cover of a magazine back then (probably Sport Compact Car), and it suddenly clicked in my head that those were the cars I liked, at around age 16. Japanese imports, lowered, big wheels, which I thought could still be cool even if they were sedans. I was always drawing cars from a young age, but basically the Neuspeed NATCC Accord is what got me into import cars specifically.
I recently watched an old Best Motoring clip (basically Japanese Top Gear meets Gran Turismo IRL) from the mid-90s where a Japanese Touring car Accord raced against some 90s Japanese Group A and GT500 cars around Tsukuba - it put up a surprisingly good fight and sounded absolutely glorious while doing so!
I remember going to watch these back in the day, such good looking cars and the sound!!👌
Likewise. Gutted really, I was born in the wrong era. All racing in the 90’s was just so much cooler
Bar the BMW of the time that was the car for me. Looks bloody awesome and sounds bloody awesome too.. Thank you for the trip back in time.
Takes me back I'm remember watching this at brands . Awesome car .
So THIS is the inspiration for the Ibishu Pessima touring car!
This is the content! I was a teenager back in the day watching these at Oulton I'll never forget. Thx for posting this.
love the appreciation you have for the 90's JDM legends ;)
Oh mate this is only the beginning
David Leslie was my favourite driver as a kid. Not Plato or menu or rydell ext ext, So sad when I heard he passed. I've always wondered what happened to those old super touring cars. Gorgeous bit of kit. Glad to see it running
that looks H22 with cylinder head reserved. Amazing car!
It is
i always understood it to be a 2.0 variant of the h22

Toca touring cars forever ❤️🙌
old enough to remember the old rs500,s andy rouse an all that but this is still a lovely piece of engineering
For me the most beautiful touring car ever...and ive had the street version coz the shape of this car is just timeless. Thanks for sharing! Great sound even with the dumb silencer (i know, new wonderful times meanwhile)....
Just the best era of touring cars. One thing i always loved with this era is the face the cars looks so like the road going version. I dont think we will ever see an era of touring cars with so many factory built cars.
This era will never be beaten what a great video! 1994 my first year at Silverstone, watching the Volvo 850 estate, gives me goose bumps even to this day!
I agree the cars will never be that level again without the same investment. Although we don’t have the same rivalries anymore I do believe the racing is just as close!
What a fantastic example of how to be smooth yet fast. No drama, the fully car under control in appalling conditions.
Awesome video Jake.
We we're blessed to have the Super Tourers in the UK. Thanks for the video.
Phwoar what a beaut! And that sound! Thanks a lot for sharing, takes me back...
Remember watching these in the 90s and going to the races I’ve recently started goin again been oulton and Croft loved it donington next👌
love this car in dtm racer for playstation.
was a touring car racing game from codemasters
it was hilarious
these 2.0 300hp cars are awesome
great to see someone havin fun with these cars.
That sound!!! I truly fell in love with the Accords (and Honda in general) around then but it was the 98 and newer 99 shape Accords that hold a very special place in my heart, driven by the awesome James Thompson. Really looking forward to seeing these cars in action at Brands at the end of June.
Didnt know you had your own channel Jake. Loving the super tourer content.
What a machine and what a noise that is ❤️ proper nostalgia trip! Loved this era of touring cars, cheers Jake!
Yep we did a good job at MSD, mine and Stuart's wiring still lives on, although I see some electrical panels have been moved, different logging system now as well....hope to see it at Brands soon 👍
Proper Car the super tourer! Great driver is Jake, really hope he wins BTCC title this year..
I saw the Italian fashion brand Enny sponsor on the front and I initially thought it was one of James Kaye’s
8 years on the island and still not bumped into him mind!!
Awesome vid jake! i was at donnington park in '98 and the noise of these cars is something else. Must get to a historic super tourer race at some point to hear them again for real. As an 11 yr old boy i fell in love with them and that sound.
The Glory days 👍🇬🇧🏁
The transmission is amazing
Awesome Vid, 90s Btcc was the nutz to watch. Can't wait for this season to start lol
Epic thank you for sharing my favourite touring car era
Btcc was some of the first Motorsport I watched as a kid. My mom was sick with cancer and my brother and I would just sit around on weekends and watch touring cars. It's great to see this thing out thanks for sharing.
Great car and video, shame about the weather, maybe you should get it back on a dry track and try for some lap times another day. Looking forward to more vids, thanks
The golden era of touring cars
Lovely insight, hope to see plenty more content from you! Great to have youtube content from fully fledged racers 👍
U are the man...watching from malaysia
That generation of accord 94-98 best from BTCC series
Fantastic video Jake. Loved it. Great car from the golden Super Touring era.
Keep up the great work. Great to see you making and posting more videos 👍

Reminded me of the game TOCA 2.
These old touring cars are fantastic , always love them at Goodwood, hopefully catch you at Knockhill this year, good luck for the year ahead
Mega isn’t it. Ah perfect, I absolutely love Knockhill. Fans are mega up there also
These were great cars, looked and sounded amazing
Top class again Jake. Can't wait for the new season all the best 🙌
Great video format, nice and simple - just letting us see the car and then the great onboard. Keep them coming 👍👍👍
Appreciate that. Really just trying to get across how raw and awesome these cars are.
Got to do an Audi super tourer, they took btcc to another level.
What a great car, would love to have a go in one of them. Keep up the awesome videos Jake
I love Honda👍Very nice Car😍
Honda purists are coming after you for saying the engine is a B18 Jake 😂.
Great video thanks
Haha only going off the info given to me by the team, supposedly it’s a B18 bored out to a 2.0. Don’t shoot the messenger 😂
Yeah definitely not a B18 😂 it’s the F20B which was an engine designed specifically for homologation into touring car racing. Closely related to the H22 but not completely the same.
@@jakehillracinghaha not shooting the messenger bud, great to see content on these cars. FYI it's an F20 engine with the head reversed, not related to the B series at all.
Lol shame on them 😂
Jake I can’t wait to see you at brands hatch for BTCC qualifying and race day!
Mega, come and say hello!

Fell in love ❤❤❤with
one cool car as Honda BTC fan. Very impressed! Love the way it's built so much detail for a race car, is it similar to the car, Matt neal would of drove
Very cool. Such an iconic car
We need more videos on the classics like 850 and Audi.
H22. It b18. The head is reversed (like the modern k20) so the intake is in the front. Genius engineering
Great Video - enjoyed that! What a car!
Thank you Richard! Nice to show people all the exciting cars I am lucky enough to be involved with!
ive dreamt of having a go in a super tourer since i was 13 and TOCA came out on the PS1. Would give all my internal organs to have a go in a 1999 Vauxhaul Vectra Super Touring Car.
You and me both. Toca touring cars on PS1 was epic. I would kill to drive the Peugeot 406 Super Touring car

This car represents my childhood❤😂
Legendary car!!!
Raced my Lotus against these in the Arrowpack Euro Saloons series Hondas, Nissan and Fords absolute mega cars.
I'm not an expert but that doesn't look like a B18. Looks like a H series engine and with a little bit of research its a 2.0L aswell. So maybe they destroked a H22?
Brilliant Jake 👌🏻 How does it compare to the modern day touring car with acceleration, speed etc?
Great video, Jake! How does this compare pace wise to your 3 series? Appreciate it’s difficult to tell in the wet but curious to know if it would be any faster
I did not expect it to be "just" a b18. I always thought bttc had a 2 liter restriction.
That noise! Probably the obvious question, but how do these SuperTourers from the 90s compare with the modern day BTCC cars? I'm guessing they're much lighter for a start!
ABSOLUTELY NO CRAPPY INTRO YESSSSSSSSSS
Stunning beaut but B18??
Great video
Great stuff 👍
If you get a chance to check out the 1999 BTCC Nissan Primera and then check the engine size compared to the regs, well i will leave it there............ ;)
I know the car well. I won 4 out of 4 in the Aiello car at the super tourer festival here in the UK. And yes… know what you mean
HONDA VITEC SOUND!👍 Vaaaaaa Va Vaaaaaa Va Vaaaaaa Vaun Vaun Vaaa Vaaaaaa 🎶
Hi jake just subscribed to your channel great content been supporting you for the last couple of years in the btcc as your surname is hill same as mine so looking foward to the new season good luck 👍
Really appreciate that, thank you for support on the channel and with my BTCC program, that’s awesome.
F20b vtec 🙌🙌🙌🙌
How does this compare with the modern Touring Cars that you drive today?
Much much nicer chassis simply because of the weight. Our cars today are over 1300kg and back then they were 1000kg
Jake🙌🤙
Analog era , which ever way you look at it was better…. In my mind .
And you got a good dose of Guns n Roses / Nevarna thrown in with the times and virtually no speed cameras on the roads 😃.
There’s something quite soulless about modern stuff , dunno what it is even though it’s mainly the tech and electronics that have come on leaps and bounds , build quality is better with modern race cars .
Bring back Group C , N/A e36 M3 and a decent GP4 MK2 with a BDG .
Bummer about the noise restrictions FFS . There’s nothing nicer than the sound of a well sorted M3 with a carbon air box wafting past the pit wall ❤
b18? thats a h22 with the cylimder head casted the other way around, the intake face the front of the car
Was that a TVR cerbera dash, maybe I missed you say it
Thats a reverse head H series not b18! Possibility of F20b, h22a, or even a h23a but forsure reverse head h22! ❤
The engine is the h22
H22 engina?
Toca super touring cars where the group B rally cars and group C le man cars of the day just monsters of which we’ll never see again. Memories of mansell in the ford mondeo just mega memories. Feel
Sorry for kids of this generation of the bore fest that is F1 and touring cars today
Reversed h22?
A Car looks familiar)
My god that B18 induction noise, that is just heavenly.
Cams sounded pretty spicy too when it was idling. i wonder if VTEC even still works, or the hot cams are always engaged..
dang,
h series or b series?🧐
1 up 5 down?
