NIN is one of the most prime examples of a human playing along with a drum machine in flawless harmony.. The human gives the AI the soul and the AI give the human technicallity. Its also very similar in case to a band like Ministry, or KMFDM.

I saw him with A Perfect Circle years ago and at the time had a broken right foot…so he played all the base drum parts off the double bass pedal with his left foot…and you literally couldn’t tell the difference. The only reason I knew is because Maynard told everyone.

I believe John used a Jeff Ocheltree 8x14 Paiste Bronze Spirit of 2002 snare on this tour. The same snare Danny Carey uses. The thing is monster. But add a trigger and you get the greatest snare tone out there.

Here’s a perfect example example or Josh showing versatility that Taylor could never reach.
Granted Taylor didn’t need this type or skill set with Alanis or FF but Josh is an alien on the highest level.
It’s likely that Dave Grohl is never going to fully comprehend what he has within his band now & what level that Josh can take his band.

I saw Josh drumming with A PERFECT CIRCLE in Melbourne years ago. He was so tight and clean (with a degree of showmanship), staying in the pocket all night. Exceptional session drummer responsible for many good drum tracks, on many albums for many top bands.

There is a trigger and a mic on the snare ;) that´s how you get that sound! i´ll bet this sound is 80% trigger, 20% mic. i usually use the mic for attack with a hard compression and the nice warm and clear body of the triggersignal and because there is no bleed in the trigger signal, you can add as much high end as you like without having a ton of hihat bleed being raised too. There is always a little latency between mic and trigger which you´ll have to manage. either with a little bit of input delay or getting rid of the attack in the trigger signal and just use the sustain, where a few millisec. of latency just doesn´t bother.
this way it will also always sound natural, because you have a real live played attack, so the snare sounds different with every hit....like an natural snare. ;)
    love your vids!!

Snare drum- He's using a trigger. They change it up on almost every song, and blend it with the acoustic snare. You can actually hear him catch a little more rim when he goes to the hat.

Precise like a machine, was really happy to see him nail it at the taylor hawkins tribute in London. He could be a totally credible candidate to fill in with the foo fighters.

If you watch the Wish video you can see a trigger on the snare next to the microphone. They are likely mixing live with a well designed velocity sensitive sample. Doesn’t take away from his playing at all, we just know that Trent demands the highest quality live sound he can get.

“The snare tone is so consistent it sounds like a sample” it is a sample. There is an internal trigger in the snare drum triggering a sample.
