Let's briefly talk about how Rick edited in the audio of "Every Little Thing..." on top of Josh's playing. Josh NAILED the tempo of that well enough from memory that the actual song could be superimposed on top seamlessly. Floored.

I was at the Devo concert in Oakland in 2014 that ended up being the movie "Hardcore Devo: Live". I was wearing a Frank Zappa Lumpy Gravy shirt. I met Josh during the VIP meet and he saw my shirt, telling me he used to play for his Son, Dweezil. I felt honored that he took the time to mention that. Great Drummer, and all around a decent dude. Also, if you ever see the concert movie I mentioned, there is a scene during the song "Uncontrollable Urge" where a guy jumps on stage and then dives into the audience. I'm the guy he landed right into. I have my own footage of that I'll upload sometime.
Can't count how many vandals shows I went to as a kid growing up in the Los Angeles punk rock scene. Great to see him with the foo fighters now. Josh freese definitely payed his dues as a musician and the foo fighters saw that too.

I initially wasn’t sure that Foo Fighters would continue after Taylor’s death, but when I learned that Josh was joining them I knew Dave had made the right choice. Me too!!!
One of the only albums, in which the first single is hands down the best track on the album. The whole album is great too
Absolutely!
Just saw them play it back to back in AZ, between Judith and The Outsider, he totally killed it
I met and know Josh from way back when he played regularly at Disneyland. Saw him last at Westlake Audio in like 1998. He's always been a likeable and dependable guy which is a HUGE reason why he gets the calls.
Cool..I’m sure we crossed paths
I was playing my heart out from 80-00 in the hot bed of it all.
I lived on the strip and survived
Josh has influenced my drumming more than I am even conciously aware. I have incorporated so much of his feel and licks from Mer de Noms into my own DNA without even intending to do so. Thank you for this interview, Rick.
That EFFING cut at 1:11:02 - genius... Also shows Josh' incredible pocket. Right in time with original track!
Absolutely amazing instantly went looking for someone in the comments that also loved this!
YES!
"It felt like someone socked me in the stomach." brought tears to my eyes. Beautiful human.

That would be EPIC.
Yess Grohl Please!

here here
@@toke7342 Yes, where he talks about everything but music. There's not really a lot of interviews, if any, where he gets to that stuff that Rick asks about. It could be very interesting.
Josh clearly has all of the tea but never spills a drop. What a classy dude.
would love a list of those albums he's played on that no one realizes he has
You wanna blow your mind check out the video by the vandals “sweating to the oldies” it will show you his start and paint a great picture of how much ground his talent has covered!!! You’ll thank me haha (note the actual mini doc video produced by the band not the live album under the same title) it’s on here in a few places as part 1,2,3 ext with the dig!
@@tvd1188 My favourite "a random Josh appears" is "I'm just Ken" from the barbie movie. It was just so unexpected
@@soundninja99WHAT
@@santiagourrutia4218 yup, randomly checked the credits for some reason and turns out Josh played the drums and Slash played some of the guitar parts
I can't believe I just sat down and watch an hour and a half of Josh talking, and it felt like 5 minutes, never knew who he was even though I have been listening to all those bands he's drummed in for years, my jaw hit the floor when he started rattling them off. Loved this interview
Big same! Unreal. I'm a huge fan of his and I didn't even know it! Lol
I feel the exact same!!!!
I wanted to hate the new FF drummer, but OMG, I was instantly won over! What a great guy and a great interview. You’ve done it again, Rick.
Love that you talked to Josh!!
Gotta talk to Mr Grohl now 😊
Dave is on every interview, get Nate or Chris, I want to hear more them
@@BimBamZimZam I totally agree. While of course it would be great to have a Dave Grohl interview on the channel, Chris or Nate would both be excellent interviews and give a different perspective and insight into the band dynamics. Dave has always been the major spokesperson for the band so would be cool for the other guys to get the spotlight for a change!
@@AaronRadioStudio agreed! Although I don’t remember Dave ever doing a long form interview with someone as knowledgeable about music as Rick. He always manages to get things out of these guys that others haven’t.
I am hoping for Pat Smear. He is an interesting dude.
@@sailingsvzara aww I love Pat! Such a cool dude and always seems completely stoked during every Foos show I’ve seen him at
"The Noose" drum is my favorite Josh!
Still give me goosebump every single time!
It was Josh’s idea to “flick the switch” on that song. The dynamics leap out at the listener from that shift.
I was about to comment and then I hear him say “infectious grooves”! Man that brings me back. What I was going to say is how much I was always liked Freese. Then, he starts rattling off guys that took a liking to him when he was a kid, Vinnie, Jim Keltner, Jeff Porcoro, Chad Wackerman, etc.. and I’m just blown away who he got to watch and learn from. Then he ends up with one of the greatest bands in rock. Well done, Josh! Very well-deserved. What a tremendous drum life!!
Freese is the modern-day Hal Blaine. He elevates pretty much every record that he plays on! Thank you so much for doing this interview, Rick!
He really is in that upper level of elite session drummers.
On several tracks of New Radicals 1998 Maybe You've Been Brainwashed Too.
Never thought of it that way, but he kind of is!
Hal Blaine! Now that is a legendary throwback!
Love that word ELEVATE
All my heroes did that in their respected bands.
And I can confidently say so did I.
Drummers make all the difference.
Love that part.
Rick: "because everyone has air-drummed that??"
Josh: "YES"
Ha! That's what makes a part 'a part.' If a non-drummer like me knows it by heart and air drums it every time, it's a part. I mean - can you imagine listening to Tom Sawyer without those post-guitar-solo drum bits? Me either, cuz it wouldn't be Tom Sawyer you're listening too...
@@VonHenry70 total agreement bud.
It was the full, whole-hearted "YESSSS!!!!" that Josh responded to Rick's suggestion that made me smile so wide.
Like he was saying "THAT IS EXACTLY THE DEFINITION RICK YOU ARE A GENIUS" lmao.
So thoroughly enjoyed this interview.
@@macdahdi5175 That these guys are simpatico to that extent made this such a joy.
This isn't an interview ....it's just a great conversation. A brilliant insight into Josh Freese's personality and why he gets all the work he does.
And that's what makes it so entertaining.
This gentleman is so well spoken. Every word is well chosen and spoken. He seems a really cool dude. They chose well with him as the new drummer.
I always find drummers to be the most articulate 🍻
Amazing drummer! Legend. Rick we need you to interview the entirety of the Foo Fighters, man!
Somehow this has to happen
YESSSS PLEASEEEEE 🙏🏻
Would love a Steely Dan Beato level breakdown of each member’s one hour long account of that band. Such an interesting history!
These interviews are so great, it makes us greedy for even more of our favorite musicians.
This needs to happen!
I can see how he has a GREAT drumming history with a lot of bands/albums. Hes a delightful conversationalist wow
Know absolutely nothing about drum kits, but I find the discussion of drums kits fascinating
I can't think of anyone better to replace the genius and great character of Taylor Hawkins. Great interview as always.
I hope no kid who believes in Santa sees this though
There are so few interviewers that can execute as seamless, effortless even, as you, Rick. Kudos 👏 👏👏
Drummer with an absolutely fantastic feel. One of my all-time favorite
I saw this on Josh’s IG and I already knew this interview is gonna be one of the best!
i don't think i've ever seen an interview with a musician more down to Earth, honest, and thoughtful as Josh. Loved this interview.
WOW ... I didn't realize he had been involved in so many bands and albums! Awesome. I was only 6+ minutes into the interview and it was clear he was the perfect choice.
Check out his wiki. He’s played on over 300 albums across all different genres.
It doesn’t surprise me at all that Dave picked him.
Wooooo, my favorite drummer!! So stoked for this!
What a great interview. Learned so much about Josh Freese. He seems so likable and relatable and laid back. Enjoyed this thoroughly!
I’ve been a Freese fan boy forever and have listened to every interview I’ve been able to find with him. This is hands down the best.
How do you get any better then a Rick Beato interview? The knowledge he has and he’s so down to earth…. Keep up the good work Rick…
He will always be the Vandals drummer to me! Sweatin to the oldies!!!

Can't count how many vandals shows I went to as a kid growing up in the Los Angeles punk rock scene. Great to see him with the foo fighters now. Josh freese definitely payed his dues as a musician and the foo fighters saw that too.
Anyone who has been in the music biz for a bit knows Josh and knows that he’s 1. A killer drummer 2. A total pro. And 3. A hilarious awesome dude.
This interview is FREAKING AMAZING! Thank you Rick!
I got to see the Foo Fighters for the first time when they toured Australia at the end of 2023, and Josh absolutely rocked!!!
Josh is one of the most FUN drummers to watch. His locomotion is fascinating. Also PF Changs. Also, his Instagram is legendary in like a Twin Peaks sort of way.
Totally agree!
Rick is building up an amazing catalog of interviews that let us, the viewers and the fans, see the human side of all these great musicians but also, we get to learn the craft behind great songs, bands and professionnal path that leads to great career. Thank you so much sir!
Rick you are by far the best interviewer around. Just letting the guest speak… great job man!!
Can't believe it's been 2 years already since Taylor's passing
Foos no longer the same. Miss his intensity, energy and commitment. Songs sound different...
@@ChickenJoe-tq6xd why they didn't have a defrib on hand is crazy...
Never forget Dave Grohl FORCED Taylor to get injected with the covid vaccine in order to tour or he would have been fired, Taylor could be ALIVE today but it was Dave's fault
Clot shot to blame
Dave Grohl FORCED Taylor to get the Clot Shot!
I met Josh when our band Arcade used to play at Disneyland. I was the bass player and Josh was really great way back then. Joshs' father hired me to work in that band.
This was amazing, I could listen to Josh talking all day. Humble, very likeable and professional drummer. Its clear why so many artists want to work with him. Would love to see a part 2 interview with him.
Super excited for this one
I wish him good luck. It can be very difficult to step into the role of a musician that has died.
I don’t know Josh at all…and with this introduction, I am thoroughly impressed!! He’s humble, respectful, and instantly likable! Oh, and with killer talent and his resume of experience, he’s a great choice for the Foo Fighters. Taylor would have been proud of the band’s decision.
Rick, you always do the interviews that I didn't know I wanted to watch. This was so fascinating, and I honestly wasn't super aware of who Josh Freese was until this. I'm so grateful to be alive and interested at the same point in human history as you're doing this. What an amazing thing.
I worked at a studio in LA twenty some odd years ago. Josh was in on a session that unfortunately I was not a part of but I remember the assistant engineer coming out on a break and commenting “Josh Freeze is in there. That dude is a bad ass drummer!”
Glad to see him in the Foos, given the circumstances. He deserves it and is a great fit!
It's insane that he's been in so many bands. The versatility that Josh has in unmatched
I just watched the whole interview and I'm feeling happier.
Thank you for the awesome interview!
I loved Josh Freese just by listening to his music with Perfect Circle. This is the first interview I hear with him. Now I love him even more.
Greetings, Josh. Just saw you play at Sessanta in Dallas 4/12/24. So happy to see you on the throne -- you are one of the all-time greatest.
Agreed! Amazing show!
THANK YOU for this interview. Blessings!
Your a legend too Rick.......keep up the awesome work and hope you continue the channel interviewing these next level musicians.......much love from Wollongong Australia.
Glad he mentioned Big Drill Car. Huge fuck yes!! Amazing band. Great shout out.
I saw BDC play at the Whisky in 1990
Thank you for that. One of my all time favourite interviews. Josh was so humble but fun and talented.
Always amazed at how humble some of the guys you interview are and yet they are some of the most amazing musicians and created the soundtracks to our lives…thank you for what you do Rick!
You think Josh Freese is humble? That's hilarious!

By far one of my favorite people in music and a fantastic drummer. I initially wasn’t sure that Foo Fighters would continue after Taylor’s death, but when I learned that Josh was joining them I knew Dave had made the right choice. Hopefully we get Josh in the studio on the next album, he’s too amazing to be just a touring drummer!
I could listen to Josh Freese all day long !!!
Ricks job is to basically interview the best artists in the world. Talk about a dream come true.
So true!
He worked hard and has the talent for that, I would say it is well deserved
It's a dream come true for the artists to have someone with Ricks knowledge and skillset to interview them!
Absolute genius. Legend. Great interview Rick!! I love how you don’t dominate interviews. So good.
There is so much to learn from Josh Freese. He deserves every bit of recognition.
I don't even have to watch the video to know it's going to be awesome! I loved Taylor and I love how Josh has fit in so well......❤
I love that he still has that sense of wonder about playing. That there's still stuff for him to learn. I love that!
I had no idea who this guy was. Yet I am a huge Vandals fan. I mean I always loved their musicianship and how unique they are but I didn't really know much about the members or his name. Realising he is the drummer behind so many of my favourite songs and parts, and discovering how good of a dude he is - dayum, what a legend. Instant fan here. So refreshing. He's definitely the man for the job.
Josh is one of the best. Such a huge catalog with some of the best musicians of all time.
