      I'm so glad eveyone's feeling the same way about Josh, there's no resentment towards him like there has been when someone's had to replace a deceased band member. Everyone misses Taylor but is welcoming Josh for being the beast that he is

    • @wotmate
      @wotmate ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@joesretrostuff When so many bands replace a band member, some of them make the mistake of trying to find a clone. INXS did it and failed. The best way is to honour your fallen comrade, but let the new person be themselves, like AC/DC did. They didn't try to find a Bon Scott clone, they got Brian who had his own style.

    I'm not sure the Foos could have gotten away with a drummer less than Freese. Nobody can slide into Taylor's slot. Josh is a rock. He's solid. He's distinctive. He's not Taylor - which is the best of all. Nobody could take Taylor's place, so they've gotta be able to stand on their own, solid, and fit in. Josh ticks all the boxes. I can't imagine the emotional rollercoaster Dave, Pat, et al. have been on.

    From the first split second, you can feel just how much Freese is PUSHING the band. I don't mean the tempo - which was so freakin' punk rock - I mean the FEROCITY that it brought out in everyone's playing. It's the POWER in the drumming that you could hear everyone pushing themselves to rise to.
    And more than ability, I bet that's why he got the gig. They've been doing this for a long time, and have explored a lot of musical directions. So much of that was driven by the relationship between Dave & Taylor. Without that, it would be natural to just lose that fire. They could easily coast on everything they've done and finish out their careers in complete comfort. Bringing in Freese shows that they didn't want to do that. Taylor's PERSONALITY pushed Dave to go to new places. Freese's DRUMMING is going to fill that same role, MAKING the band be the absolute best they can be.

    Josh brings a definite punk energy - back to Foo roots. In the show I saw, Dave mentioned meeting Josh during his Scream days. The concert I saw in May was great! A couple of moments of still getting to know each other. In all, like a new battery was put in. I also noticed that Chris and Nate were both doing backing vocals more which was pretty cool. I expected Chris - Nate was a surprise. The band seems to do better with someone who challenges them to be better. That wasn’t where they were with Taylor. I’ll always miss him. For the band dynamic, I’m glad of the choice.

    It’s like you said - Respect. Josh Freese has the utmost respect for Taylor, for the band, for the music, for everyone in the Foo Family. It’s obvious the guys feel the same about Josh. They have full confidence in Josh. He has given them exactly what they needed - a rock solid foundation with a boost! Seeing all the guys having fun while pushing each other to a higher level was SO GREAT to see. He brings a different feel to all the songs, but to me, that is necessary.
    Taylor Hawkins was one of a kind. We all loved him so much, still do, always will. That will never change.
    This is a different band now. Same name, but many things are different. Josh Freese as the drummer of the Foos sure seems to be the perfect choice.

    Josh is an insane drummer! And playing alongside a great drummer is like the energy of being next to a freight train as it whizzes by. You're either on that train or you're off that train. So many things to say about this, many of which I've kept to myself for fear of getting my ear chewed off, but I'll start by saying well done for a really insightful analysis. My immediate reaction when watching the 'Preparing Music for Concerts' stream (is that what it was called?) where they announced Josh, was that the different sound of the drums/mix stood out like a sore thumb. I thought Josh's drums sounded woeful compared to Taylor's and it's the only time in my life I've ever been screaming to have Zildjians back. I immediately hated the snare sound, but by the end of the stream I'd grown quite attached to the snare sound Josh is getting. I still think the cymbals are missing compared to Taylor's versions, and in this particular track I am waiting to hear the cutting bell of the ride cymbal kick in and it never comes.
    I'm a big, big, big Taylor fan, although whenever I've tried to mimic playing anything Taylor's done I actually hate playing it, his style and mine don't overlap - something about that snatching power where his beats arrive only just at the right time that sounds staccato or something, he had such a different physical movement when playing which mechanically, how he ever played like that for hours on end I'll never know. I'm not a great drummer, but I know enough to know my mechanics and his sound don't cross over. The energy he had was relentless, so I'm not sure I'd quite agree with your intimation that Josh brings more intensity - how could anyone have more intensity than Taylor, but you're right in that somehow the band is bouncing along like mad men tight AF all the way through that stream. Same goes for the snippets of their gigs I've seen.
    I haven't agreed with anyone who's said they could do the gig - there's a galaxy sized difference between being able to play their songs and being able to drive *that* band along in a manner which would do Taylor justice. Not just any band, but THAT band. And then to do it night after night live in front of massive audiences, it was always going to be the biggest seat in drums and a SHORT list of possibles. For me the bit that stands out regarding Josh is that he makes it look easy, and I don't care how physically fit he is, he's still 50 and that's impressive. And tellingly, he takes parts which aren't just recordings you know, but sounds etched into you like muscle memory, played by two of the biggest rock drummers ever, and makes them different, makes them his own but doesn't change the song for the worse. You just KNOW Dave would have some pretty high standards for tinkering with the drum parts on all of these tracks and to just change the sound, bring in double bass drums and not piss him off would take some doing. Massive admiration and respect for that. Do I think this will be an awesome new era and better? Not sure - while I never gelled with Taylor's playing from a personal level, it was undeniably iconic and perfect, almost irreplaceable for many of their tunes. Time will tell if Josh does the same - at the moment it feels different but I respect it.

    "You could get just anyone..." to replace the universally loved Taylor Hawkins and play in a band fronted by Dave f***in' Grohl? Taylor's energy and feel was unique, you can't replace him but you can only bring your own chops and be able to work with the rest of the band. His take on Monkey Wrench was appropriate to the song, he wasn't trying to replace Taylor because that's impossible.

    I quite enjoy the discussion portions of these videos (the rest of the video too of course). Great stuff though. Sparking thought and healthy debate. Always educational and enjoyable/entertaining etc. I can enjoy watching with my son and at the same time take away something constructive. Its a true win-win-win.

    Josh Freese got the gig based upon his skill/time... but I believe primarily because of his energy. Foos play for 2 hours plus at a live gig, you need athlete level stamina to do that and smash it on every song for the entire set. That is a skill in itself and it's incredibly rare.

    I was a big Taylor Hawkins (RIP 🙏) fan even before he joined the Foo Fighters and was over the moon when he did. I saw the FF play monkey wrench hundred of times but this version with Josh Freeze is just perfection 😱. I loved the way you explained it 👌. People don’t realize how high is the level of a drummer like that. So thanks a lot for the video 👍

    In addition to all your great points. Freese comes from the same Punk pedigree as Dave, Nate, Chris and Pat. I'm going to say it, he is around the same age as all these guys so they all can relate to similar life experience growing up and being musicians around the same timeline. Finally, he's probably a nice guy. Someone you can sit in a tour bus with for hours rolling from town to town. He probably connects with the band on a whole other level. He's the perfect convenient package. Looking forward to new music with his creative input.
    I was somewhat hoping Omar Hakim would be the guy. He would take the Foos to some interesting places sonically. We can dream right? Great content. Thank you.

    What really shows that he was the perfect choice was the the reaction from the band..and if you watch the entire clip leading into that performance you'll see a brief conversation between Josh n Dave. You can see the personalities just click properly. Having the chops is one thing, personality and mentality is what makes perfect.

    So, my name is Andrew. I was the drummer for Reel Big Fish. Another band from Orange County CA that made it. I had the chance to play I. This scene for a long time. We played dozens of shows with the Vandals. I was on the warp tour in Sidney Australia when Chad Sexton broke his hand. I was actually playing catch with some of the guys in 311 with our bass player Matt Wong when his hand broke. Oddly enough Dave from the Vandals asked Matt and I to go play nine holes of golf. So we went. I get back and Nick Hexum walks up to me and says. "Where were you, Chad broke his hand?." He knew I was a total 311 junky at the time. He said "JOSH" played most of the set. I was close with Tim Mahoney the guitarist for 311 at the time. It was horrible and inspiring all at the same time because here goes one of my heroes in Chad Sexton. Waited for months to watch him play everyday and all of the sudden he is gone and Jody Foster Freeze is laying it down for 311. Chad's compositions are second to none. Some how Josh just turned the heat up a bit. Got on top of the groove and drove it. He is a special drummer. When friends and family say oh dude your just as good as these guys. I appreciate the sentiment. But, I know the truth. I have walked amongst the giants. Josh Freeze, Chad Sexton, Travis Barker, Gill Sharon, Darren Pfeiffer and my replacement in Reel Big Fish Carlos De la Garza. And it did not surprise me at all that probably the biggest gig in the world went to Josh Freeze. As good as you think he is he is better. The crazy part is... there are a lot of dudes(male and female) that I can say the same thing about. God bless. Great video.

    To anyone saying he should sound 'just' like Taylor or being sad about changes he makes to the song or fills...Why would you want the new drummer to play everything exactly the same? It's almost certainly a choice - if a band gets a new singer, no one expects them to change their voice to sound like the old guy. He has a different style and different sound, just as Dave and Taylor did.

    • @flor9389
      @flor9389 ปีที่แล้ว

      I kind of think that Dave needed someone to change the songs up a bit. He associates songs with memories and the changes enable him to play the old songs without being overwhelmed by the memories of his best friend.

    Josh sounds like a steadfast studio musician. Taylor sounded like a garage drummer. I looked up a live clip from 2022, Argentina, and the tempo Taylor played was intense but slower and sloppier, almost garage like. Josh was butter on this tune. But he was controlled and his professional, world class chops, are just head over heels above Taylor's. It's not a bad thing because Taylor was great. This guy is world class.

    The deal with Pat and the breakdown part was that they were talking about the guitar part just being played by down picking only instead of up and down. It gives a crunchier sound but it's harder to do. The 'no you can't do that' was when he switched to up down to 'cheat' for fun.
