    Its funny looking back over this. For me the magic of masterpiece from MP10 was that they represented how I remembered the characters, not how they actually were. Which was amazing. The erosion of this to be more accurate to the toon is a downturn in my opinion.

      Agreed. I'm so disappointed in the change in aesthetic direction of the Masterpiece line. Maybe some collectors like it, but I don't. Now I'm going to end up with a collection that doesn't match. They're even changing the faction symbols now. Bummer.

      Agreed. I loved that there was a balance between toy and cartoon aesthetics mixed in with some "real world" details. I'm definitely looking forward to his review of the official Megatron.

      While I do agree that it makes the MP figures less of a luxury/collector item and more of an expensive kid toy, I wonder if Takara/Hasbro decided to go more cartoon to fill a demand for pure cartoon looks that 3rd Parties may or may not be able to reproduce for legal reasons (just my opinion and probably has zero actual truth to it). I'm not as a perfectionist as some people, but I like my figures to look amazing first, then cartoon accurate. That's why I preferred Backdraft's detailing to Inferno's cartoon accuracy (and to be honest, seeing the arms in alt mode, even if it is carton accurate, was the main turn off). These days, it seems like four or five companies get together and decide which character to release then we have a multitude of the same character, making it easier for us to pick which look we prefer instead of blindly buying a figure only to rebuy the same character from a different company.
      All that said, if they want to be as close to 100% cartoon accurate, good for them, but that will make for some very bland and cheap looking figures. Good things for repro labels.

    • @charvelgtrs
      @charvelgtrs 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I feel the opposite. The G1 cartoon should be the standard for what modern G1 figures should strive to aim for. Obviously, I'm not against toy lines that try to enhance what the characters looked in the cartoon, but we should have lines that represent how the characters looked in the G1 cartoon as faithfully as possible. Like if you are a fan of the cartoon why wouldn't you want figures that represent those designs as accurately as possible. As I'm looking at my Transform Element TE-01 Optimus Prime, its like the character literally jumped out of the cartoon.
      I don't understand why some people frown about toon accuracy for the MP line, doesn't make sense to me at all. How is accuracy a bad thing?

    I'm glad you opened the discussion, but as far as "evolution of the line", you make a few good points, but much of the video is a piece by piece assessment of toon vs toy comparison, and how the line developed its own aesthetic, inspired by toon, but even better, if I may paraphrase. I think toward the end of the video you are missing some key discussion on the evolution of the line, and again, more hung up on this assessment of the individual toy. Ultra Magnus and Star Saber, IMO, though maybe not perfect in execution of the toy, were incredibly bold risk in the evolution of the line. These were BIG, EXPENSIVE toys that represented major investment in molds and production for individual figures (no major repaint/remold opportunities to offer more sales volume) that began to chart the direction that Takara was going to take some risk, invest in the line, and expand into all types of unique characters, even if profitability would be much less than an MP-11 mold, or a Datsun mold, for example. This is the moment when the line started to show some big ass balls!!!

    great stuff so far. i look forward to where this is going. my 2 cents: to me a masterpiece figure should be a modern UPDATE of the original toy/animation model. let's face it all the animation stills you showed are horrible looking by today's standards. so why try to create a figure based on extremely outdated animation models. as you pointed out from Prime up until Magnus they were giving us figures that looked like the character they were trying to portray but had been updated for a more modern adult aesthetic. they looked to me like what a masterpiece should be. the current trend of trying to recreate a figure based on an outdated oversimplified animation model is incredibly frustrating because you get an oversimplified product. that's just my opinion. I'm really happy for the individuals who want strictly cartoon accurate figures. I just wish Takara allowed themselves some room for updating those designs like they did earlier in the line.

    I'm for the cartoon-accurate camp for the vehicular toys but I'm not liking the prices TT is charging for less detail and paint apps. However, I'm a big Beast Wars fan and paradoxically, the two figures from that line are cartoon-accurate but impressively engineered and are quite high-quality.

    1st video I've seen where I find myself in complete agreement with everything mentioned. Well done and well said my friend. For me personally, I like the aesthetics the line presented with MP-10 and continued after his release until Ultra Magnus came out. Luckily many 3rd party companies have since stepped in to fill that void... So my collection can continue as I had previously planned and hoped for.

    Why would you want a MP figure to have anything similar to the G1 toy? The G1 toys by todays standards are pretty crap if you take off your rose tinted glasses. They were great back when we were children, but as an adult they are just way too simple, lack articulation and just for the most part weren't great representations of the cartoon designs. Honestly the only original G1 toy I still like is Soundwave.

  • @Alzeal07
    @Alzeal07 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    To me they were a mix of toy and cartoon in the way they were built. Cartoon based robot yes, but the realistic vehicules, the chrome and paint, and especially the transformations come from the toy. MP10 transforms like the g1 toy, but better. Starscream, sideswipe, wheeljack etc transform like the g1 toys. The more recent Mps like Optimus, megatron, starscream or Sunstreaker have a realistic vehicule, but a very cartoon bot, so the transformation is not an aspect of the toy anymore, it's just the way to go from one to another mode. Old MP were built around a transformation, like the g1 toys, where the new ones go fot 2 modes that has to transform. Very different philosophy

    The MP-24 honestly had to be more in line with the cartoon with the already stylized proportions, not being all that different from the toy, and etc otherwise outside of the loose joints its noy that bad, and the lack of paint was honestly a good thing with mp star saber after seeing all the mps released later (mp megatron 2.0, ratchet, and etc) since it meant it was less likely to endure paint chipping which overall it benefitted from. And the reason is mostly plastic was because it was made by a gunpla designer

    Oh man, this vid ends on a suspenseful note. Excellent analysis, Bobby. Even though it had less detail, Ultra Magnus really appealed to me, it was like "because it's Season 3 and this were simpler the MP can be a bit simpler too", but the fact this simplicity carried thru to the Season 1/2 line afterwards was a concern to me because I liked the original balance of toon/tech and didn't want the completed Season 1/2 line to have inconsistencies. That said I am still collecting and enjoying MP overall.

    I've never really agreed with the notion that MP-10 was the "beginning" of the current scale and design aesthetic for the MP line. Honestly, the scale that the current MP line is based on really started with the original Masterpiece Starscream, MP-03. In fact, the only other figure that was in the same scale as the original MP-01 was MP-05, the original Masterpiece Megatron. All of the other MP figures were in the current scale (though one could argue that Grimlock should have been a little bit bigger, but his size was never portrayed very consistently in the cartoon). What MP-10 represented was Takara's full commitment to making that scale consistent (as much as possible) for the entire MP line going forward.

  • @Trebleshot
    @Trebleshot 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I would argue the balance between toy and cartoon wasn't solely for the robot mode. I always saw the line trying to get the robot mode to match the cartoon, while getting the alt mode to match the toys. And in that sense, I think the line was on track. And with that in mind, I don't think there is anything wrong with Bumblebee's feet. They are completely reminiscent of the toy, which is something you said wasn't present. I would also point out that the licensing actually helped in that regard.
    Of course, I do see an issue with the MP line moving more towards toon accurate vehicle modes - at least with regards to Inferno and Grapple. But it works for Hot Rod and Shockwave, who never had realistic alt modes anyway. And who knows? This may allow them to do Brawn, Gears, Huffer and others from early G1 that wouldn't work at all due to unrealistic alt modes. Anyway, just my thoughts.

    For me, Masterpiece line , at least originally, ran on the line between the toy and the animation based look, getting really nice toys for collectors that captured all the essence of this toy brand. Advanced toys with G1feel and modern japanese-mecha look. High Tech-details, and nice posing. Eventually, the brand has derived to bigger animation-accuracy, causing all the Third parties that were doing even cooler and more detailed versions, have finally gone to the animation-accuracy. The lack of details on the last models is specially sad.

    I kind of have to disagree with you on the Cassettes, personally they were half the reason I got Soundwave(well, Soundblaster in my case, but you know what I mean) I think the fact they got all of them in the same size of the original G1's is impressive as hell, the Frumble mold is an awesome little desk toy, Ratbat is simple but effective, Laserbeak/Buzzsaw like you mentioned, are damn near perfect, and Ravage is...well... I would like mine if he wasn't so loose in areas, but yeah, hes the weakest link for sure. I also like the play pattern, I just wish the 3 cassette storage thing actually worked well, strangely, my G1 cassettes work perfectly and almost never get jammed. I am extremely bummed we never got to see repaints of them, I'd love a Sunder and Glit from the Laserbeak and Ravage molds, or really even more cassette molds that feel as nice as Takara's.
    If we were talking favorite Masterpieces.... I am a little torn. I want to say Star Saber, but almost entirely despite of the actual toy, its the toy I always wanted, a huge, poseable and heavy Star Saber, in theory, it should be my all time favorite toy. but its just... not, something's missing, before I put reprolabels on him I honestly kind of disliked him entirely, and even now he just feels kind of... eh. if he was just done with a little more fit and finish he could have easily been in my top 5 toys ever, but sadly, I still prefer my beat up G1. I think my favorite would have to be MP01, just because of how weighty and well done he is, but if we're only talking post MP10 stuff, then I totally agree with you, Soundwave all the way.

    news.tfw2005.com/2014/08/03/takaratomy-staff-interview-shogo-hasui-on-masterpiece-180877 In the designers own words: "The toys in the 80s are not even close to the modern toys in terms of refinement, but I think the fans who followed Transformers back then used information obtained through various media such as magazines or the cartoon to supplement the image in their mind.
    I believe MPs are meant to be the embodiment of that image. Neither making the cartoon version into a three dimensional form nor making it as realistic as possible is a good idea." Now, you may or may not agree with that. It's up to you; but the designer wanted a blend. These new MP's steer away from Hasui's original intent.

  • @Freak80MC

    I don't know what the general consensus is with G1 fans on if they like their masterpiece figures looking cartoon accurate or not, but I have to say as a person who grew up on Beast Wars, I pretty much expect those masterpiece figures to look cartoon accurate and if they didn't I would never consider buying them. But maybe that's just because the animal forms were super expressive in the shows so getting realistic ones would be kind of off putting.

    Loving this! I've been waiting eagerly for this discussion and it is not disappointing. Its really interesting to see everything at once like this compared to the toon models and see that evolution occur. MP12 was my real eye opener for how big this masterpiece line was. I was seeing the character I loved as a kid in a true to life form that still held onto the cartoon look and more importantly feel. I was hooked from there on! I had Soundwave and Starscream already and that release made me go back and look closer at them and appreciate them more. Pretty hard to compare an F15 and a tape deck to real life counterparts, but a car, that was much easier to do. Ultra Magnus was the first time I used the whole set of reprolables on an official release, and it was because of that finish, or lack there of. It was also the first MP I upgraded with that shoulder articulation kit. That was my wakeup call to see a real split in what was and will be the future for the line. Can't wait for part 2, thanks for doing this documentary!!

  • @jon9550

    When looking at how the G1 toy informed the design of MP-10 you could have looked at the vents above the grill on MP-10's stomach. The "ladder" sculpted into the forearm. The wheels that are on the sides of the legs. The windshield wipers, etc. Sure MP-10 pulls most of it's design references from the cartoon version of the toy, but if you really look you can see how a lot of the details that were on the G1 toy but not the cartoon model are nicely represented.
    Looking at Starscream you see a lot of these same little references to the toy. The most obvious elements included on the Masterpiece toy that were pulled from the G1 toy are the little blue details above the feet. The tail fins on the feet are also more like the G1 toy than the cartoon model. The molded-in details on either side of the crotch area and I am sure a half dozen other small things that existed on the G1 toy but not the simplified cartoon model.

    Personally the aesthetic change is perfect. For me, the line has always been trying to get the figures to resemble as closely as possible that of their cartoon counterparts. That's just what it is for me. I want more boxy shapes, less linework, more solid paint apps and make up with that loss of detail with things like more die cast, better build quality and accessories. I wish the line had had the new aesthetic from the start. Not to say all in the new version of the line are great, the new Hot Rod is my least favorite MP ever.

    Late i know but i just wanted to add that a good argument for not going toon accurate is that the toons looked bad cuz they were restricted to what could be detailed on screen. Now we have to deal with all these plain af masterpieces coming out, i mean you expect in a way to get one in hand and say; wow this is what it SHOULD look like as it's not animated badly. I think this is why they put the details on them in the first place. As for mp13 i was upset at how cheap the plastic felt and i hate the hip joints.

    I could care less if something was cartoon accurate. I want my figure to look good first, and if they can make it cartoon accurate, then it's a bonus. It's when they try to force a cartoon accurate design when it doesn't work that kills it for some people. Not to mention that trying to reinvent G1 is difficult, seeing as the cartoon designs weren't as detailed as their third party toys are.

  • @stryderlao
    @stryderlao 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think Takara is goin more to the cartoon version because they can cut sum corners with the detailing. I enjoy the modern style look to the masterpieces until Tracks, Ironhide, and Hotrod came out. I think tha twas the time Takara got new designers to develop the toys and it shows in their works. I do love the beastwars masterpieces tho and the detail on them are amazeing compare to figures like Inferno.

    I can see Takara going back to the previous MP's that didn't have that cartoon accuracy and re-doing them little by little. either way I like the direction they are going in but I do miss the older direction as well. they might as well release two versions of everyone (cartoon accurate and detailed) so us collectors can choose which route to take.

    I think in the end, what MPs share with the G1 toys is the Alt Mode more than the Bot Mode, the G1 vehicles are spot on their real life counterparts and part of their appeal. Bot Mode is mirroring more the Cartoon. That in and of itself is why MPs are a fantastic blend of new and old as well as nostalgic.

  • @scrapheapshuffle9130

    The original G1 toys looked like vehicles that just happened to change into robots. The Masterpiece toys look more like robots that happen to change into vehicles.

    I have to say so far so good on this.
    I also noticed the change around Ultra Magnus. While I own him, I MUCH prefer my KFC Citizen Stack. Stack is dynamic, whereas Magnus feels more static and plain.
    I, for one, am not a fan of the cartoon accuracy über alles mentality. It is in fact the main reason I did not buy MP Inferno. While I love the transformation, and Inferno is a personal fave, the lack of detail is appalling. His bottom half looks like he is wearing footie pajamas. I will get the MP Grapple because there is more detail on the legs and in general. (I ended up going with Maketoys Hellfire for my Inferno character.) It's also why I will not buy the MP Thrust, instead going with the iGear version. Yeah, it's older, but it still surpasses the newer Takara take...

    I honestly don't care about how accurate to the toon are the Masterpiece toys, the only thing I care about, is that the quality of the toys, please don't give me something like MP-44 when you have the price at $500...

    oh man you stop inn that sour note... I guess it's as good a phase as any. I feel like this conversation should include mp01 and the alternators line. out seemed like they wanted to do a line that appealed to this same group of g1 fans.

    I prefer their new design approach. I like the more simple cartoon look and less chrome options(hate chrome) with replaceable bits. The only problem is how you have all these older releases that look out of date

    I mostly stopped buying Official Masterpieces after MP-24 Star Saber. I ordered Tracks and RoadRage before I got it, but I still haven't gotten around to shipping them. I really need to contact Anime-Export to find out what exactly my options are on that. I don't expect I could get a refund at this point (they were preorders before they came out), but considering how long it has been I have no idea if I could still even get them shipped. I did spend the money after all.
    After that the only MP I've purchased is Ironhide, and that was the Hasbro Asia reissue that came with the diecast drill accessory, that with all the other accessories he came with was enough to tempt me.

      I guess technically I did get Clampdown after that as well, but it is a repaint of an earlier mold so I don't think of that the same way.

    SO looks like the mp10 needs chrome upper legs to be almost spot on to the g1 toon image...I think it would weird AF tho...But you never know

    • @tatt4music
      @tatt4music 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The upper legs are actually white. As are the gas tanks on his legs. They never used silver in the animation. But I think MP-10 is perfect how he is myself.

    • @N3RFTHIS
      @N3RFTHIS 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      His smoke stacks are also white, however the white is meant to represent chrome. Yeah they are white in the image, however they cant really do an accurate job of illustrating chrome back in the 80s. In the movie the did a slightly better job of making them look chrome.

    • @AdriaCalais
      @AdriaCalais 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      MoarPower yes I call this white and off white as opposed to chrome or silver a misunderstanding of the source material. Which is why I hate that grey and white faces are trickling into third party as well. My major flaw with backdraft is that the face is grey. It's even silver ON THE BOX!! hahaha I really can't put myself in the shoes of someone who looks at Optimus Prime and thinks that the smokestacks should be white... um. Have you ever really seen a truck or just a cartoon? Hehe.

    • @aviatordanz
      @aviatordanz 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'll be 100% honest with you, Earthrise Optimus is a better figure than MP-10. It has more sculpt work, less paint, less die cast, but objectively better articulation. Plus you can get upgrades for the trailer and a axe and still be 1/10th the price of MP10

    Great discussion Bobby. I know you don't respond to comments but I was hoping you might could answer a quick question. I know there's a difference in the Hasbro and Takara Soundwave. The Hasbro has yellow eyes where the Takara has the cartoon accurate red eyes. Do you know of any differences between the Hasbro and Takara Prime?
