      I think it's ironic those things cheap out on the sat nav, despite being the only kind of vehicle desperately in need of ones which show the next charging station. In my old car, I just use google maps from my phone.

      plus cold weather really kicks range in. my Corsa E is doing well now the weather is warmer, below 0 degrees c i was getting 120miles a charge which is a lot less than the 'claimed' 209miles which i've never achieved! it does what I need and I expected the range to be no where near what they claim but it's really misleading for people new to EV's that don't understand electronics and/or batteries

    As a former van driver I'll tell you part of my job was long days covering many miles up and down the motorway and flying around town getting distance and jobs covered in the quickest time possible. To that end these vans are totally inappropriate.
    Great job Mercedes and VW NOT !

  • @DanteTheAbyssalBeing
    @DanteTheAbyssalBeing 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    Seems a little sketchy topping out at 50mph on motorways. You'll spend all day being overtaken by HGVs and that's pretty hairy. You'd think mid-size vans would be prime candidates for EV conversion; electric motors make tonnes of instantaneous torque and vans have big flat rear bays to shoehorn in a large, low profile battery pack.

    • @MadIIMike
      @MadIIMike 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The Motors have big torque, but this just means manufacturers skip out on transmissions meaning you don't have much torque on the wheel.
      Personally, I'll never buy a EV with Lithium Batteries or let one park in my garage but for anyone in the market for those: Those Batteries last the longest if you only use small amounts of their max. capacity between recharges, you'd typically want them above 3/4 charged (more=better).
      However, they usually load slower near the top-end, so most people will drive them dry (kinda logical with ranges as the ones mentioned) and fast-charge them for 30~ minutes when they have to extend the range... so buying one used doesn't sound like a good idea either.
      Back to the topic: EVs also hate drag (also why most have fairly low topspeeds around 120~140, which is more notable here in germany), so it's gonna be a big challenge for that tech to even give you decent mileage at speeds that don't make you a obstacle in traffic.

    • @NZUK1979
      @NZUK1979 ปีที่แล้ว

      By the time you get on a motorway, you’ll be out of battery. Range is bollox.

    • @kimekholm7178
      @kimekholm7178 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MadIIMike "You'd typically want them above 3/4 charged (more=better)" This is wrong, so wrong. The ideal SoC (charge stage) for lithium batteries is ~20-80%. This range is also where they typically charge faster because electrons flow more easily when the pack isn't full or almost empty.
      All vehicles hate drag, it's just that it is more noticeable in an EV where the motor efficiency is much better than in an ICE. Look at consumption numbers on an ICE, they go up massively with higher speeds too which is mainly a result of drag.

    • @kimekholm7178
      @kimekholm7178 ปีที่แล้ว

    I’m sorry but as much as we need to move away from ICE in commercial vehicles, this is ridiculous in 2022. A lot of vans do 100s of miles a day so these are effectively useless once you put anything inside them. 56mph top is dangerous and impractical.

    the place I work at amongst many other vans we have a 2021 electric vw crafter, and I ahave to say that the quality is abismal. the whole vw range is an terriffic dissapointment over last few years, the quality of materials has plummeted severly over last few years, reliability has become a thing of the past and the whole brand persona has been totally diluted, but the sales are still high due to the general publics idea that these are quiality and affordable vehicles from years gone past. quality, logic and good old common sense have been totaly replaced by gimmicks noone needs, but many are somehow convinced they actually want, and the value of what you get for the money is ridiculously low. the interiors of most new entry to midrange german cars are far worse, that those of cheap korean cars that these same brand snobs were joking about 10 or 15 years ago. but people still keep on buying vw and skodas as status symbols in the poorer parts of europe, as if they ever were. I'm at all not surprised that the company that I work at is starting to buy and use vans and commercial vehicles from less known brands from asia, and we are far happier with what they offer

    Are the Fifth Gear presenters blind? The VW has a much nicer interior than the Vito, bland as it is. I'm not saying the VW's interior is premium because it just isn't, but the interior of the Mercedes is just horrible; for starters the screen is much more dated and has worse navigation, the plastics on the dashboard look and feel worse, and the Mercedes Vito's steering wheel doesn't even have any buttons! Mercedes have really cut costs on their Vito van, which is such a shame since its sibling the V-class has a way nicer interior that genuinely feels like a Mercedes.
