Breville Barista Express Solenoid Block Installation

- Time to install the new solenoid block into the Breville Barista Express machine and see if it works.
Be sure to insert the o-rings from the original solenoid block if your new part did not come with them pre-installed. Also, fit a small tie wrap to the silicone rubber hose, you'll want it snug enough to stay in place but loose enough to slide over the hose barb on the diffuser.
As soon as that hose is close to the hose barb, slide it in place before maneuvering the block into it's final location. Install the two machine screws. Then insert the 3 hard plastic lines and clips (saved from the original part). Then install the 6 wires, red on the left, orange on the right. Finally slide the tie wrap down over the hose barb and tighten it up and trim the end off. Double check that everything is connected properly.
Inserting the water valve is tricky. Lay the machine on it's side. Make sure the screws are in the valve body. Get the screw closest to the back started. Then working from the other side, work the valve around until you get the other screw lined up over it's hole and then get it started. Then alternate between the two screws tightening a little on each to work the valve and grommet evenly into the recess in the back. You want that to end up centered and flush with the grommet in the end so the water tank will seal into place. Reconnect the hopper switch on the top panel and put in the 10 screws and you are done.
The sound of these new Ceme solenoids is so nice and solid. I think the higher current coils generate a higher magnetic field.
You're probably looking at US$250 or more to have this repair done at a shop and that may involve shipping the machine there and back. Breville has a ~$250 flat rate repair charge for parts like this.
So it's well worth the time and effort to do this repair yourself.

Thanks, you got me up and running! I was able to order the solenoid block directly from Breville for $45 including shipping. It got to me in less than a week. They needed me to provide the Part Number: SP0020444, they couldn't look it up. I contacted eReplacementparts first, they said it would have to come from the factory to them first and then they'd ship it so I saved a lot of time and their 20% markup.
It leaked a little at first, I took it apart, found the leaks and reseated the o-rings and it fixed it.
Glad you got your machine running. Yes, it does sound like direct from Breville is the way to go for some of the replacement parts. Usually you look up the p/n on the mfg. site and then find it for less at another on-line vendor. But here, you look up the p/n on the on-line vendor site then order it from the mfg. for less. Go figure!
And yes, those tiny o-rings can be a bit fiddly. That's where I ended up making a special tool to insert them.
You helped me get my machine up and running again. After lots of troubleshooting and watching you videos it was determined it was my solenoid that was bad. I ordered it and look about 3-4 weeks to arrive. I also had the screws on the shower head loose so I had to take care of that as well. My machine is up and running perfect now after many months of no use. Thank you again for you guidance in all these videos. I now have confidence opening this thing up where as before when I first saw one of your videos I thought it would be impossible for me to fix anything on these machines.

I paid $100 shipped from a local place in Burlington Ontario, and they had it to me in a couple days. It was a pretty painless fix, and now I'm sipping espresso - most importantly, the wife can have her lattes.

See if you can find out where the leak is originating from. Maybe try reseating the tank a few times and see if the leak stops. Perhaps the hose is loose under the tank. Or maybe the seal where the tank plugs in is out of position. Or if that seal is damaged, replace it:

Thank you for the videos. I just finished replacing the solenoid block on my Breville Barista Express BE870XL/A. But not everything is working as expected. The new solenoid block is on, the water line connected to the back panel and the water reservoir hung on the back. I've not replaced the top or all the screws to button it all up. When powered up the Filter Size single/double lights are alternating flashing. The single and double button servings are now producing water out of the group head which it was not before which is why I replaced the solenoid. The problem I have is that the hot water / steam control is outputting to the group head instead of the hot water spout / steam wand. So no water is being directed up to the hot water/steam output. What do you think? Bad connections? blocked hose? bad new solenoid? All suggestions welcome.

It has lots of troubleshooting information.
Follow where the water is going and see at what point it goes the wrong way and that'll help pinpoint the source of the issue.
Could be the grinder is not fully seated as that can cause the lights to blink. As far as water coming out the wrong place, perhaps the water tubes are hooked up incorrectly or the solenoid wires have been swapped.

Mr. Brown, thanks for posting this. I've had intermittent buzzing that became progressively 100% duty, which sounds exactly like your video, about 3 years ago, but my undisassembled theory is/was that the vibration pump has an aging valve that collected scale deposits on the ball or seat. A single decent decalcification/descaling with a good commercial compound Dezcal, cleared it up 100%. The vinegar descaling procedure (directed by the owners manual) had NO effect.
It is interesting that the same sound may originate in this solenoid block instead, since replacing it seems to have fixed your issue. I may have bought my spare pump for nothing...
Yes, not sure exactly what was the root cause of this issue. My problem seemed to be unaffected by descaling, I've been using Dezcal for several years now.
I saw in the LAI video where he had replaced the solenoids then a short while later had the pump go out. I do have a spare pump on order, it's been on back order for about 3 months now. I figure I'll get it some day and have it ready to go if mine goes out.
Hi Paul! Thank you for sharing your information with those of us that wouldn’t endeavor inside our machines without it! I have what might be a silly question - I’m preparing to buy the solenoid from Amazon, but my number on the back lists BES870, not XL. I’m in the US, should I just assume it is XL and buy the according solenoid?

If so, make sure to get a 220-240V solenoid valve, at least if you're planning to use the coil. Otherwise, the physical valve body is the same, just the voltage of the black plastic coil that sits on top is different, 120V vs. 240V.
Hi Mr Brown, thanks for the video. Very useful, I successfully diagnose the problem and ordered the 2/3 way solenoid and solved the no water from head group issue. However, the steam and hot water came out from the group head as well. I tried to pull out the live cable if the solenoid and the steam came out from the wand. Not sure if it’s another issue instead of the new solenoid? Not sure if it’s controller issue but the original solenoid doesn’t works this way as the new one.( no water from group head with the original solenoid)

Since disconnecting the wire to the solenoid let the water come out of the steam wand, that points to the 2/3 way solenoid coil being turned on all the time. This is common when the driving circuit on the main circuit board fails. Another way to tell is if that solenoid coil (that black cube on top of the valve) get warm or hot after the machine has be plugged in for some time. Normally none of those solenoids should be getting power if you're not running an espresso cycle.

I overpacked my one shot cappuccino and the machine started smoking. I get no pressure and no water coming out from the one shot or two shot but I do have steam and hot water for tea. Do you think it’s the solenoid?
I think the plastic connector on top of 3 way was leaking, it was not very tight when I took it apart.˜Ordered new Solenoid block from ereplacement parts for $58. Now waiting to hear ETA. Current 'replacement' coils on eBay (although missing the 'S' in the part number compared to what's on my unit 6000BHS/G6RU, so a little unsure if exact fit) run about $30 from Germany for just coil or about $60 with valve... with 3-5 week lead time... guess the family is going to learn to survive on drip coffee for a while. Again, without your help, not sure how much longer this would have taken me to solve and feel comfortable with its execution.
You might try adding a few wraps of Teflon tape on the threads atop the solenoid before screwing the plastic connector piece on. That might seal up the leak.
I wish I had checked the connections before reaching a failure point. Unfortunately the coil trips the breaker when it’s activated now, right after temperature is achieved and with no visible water on top of solenoid... I did reassembled with Teflon hoping it may magically ‘come back to life’ but alas, it did not, hence the new purchase... however I’m sure someone in the family will try the unit on a daily basis in hopes that maybe the tight seal, and time for the internals of the coil to dry, leads to some sort of miracle...

It didn't work as I expected though. Can you help me finding out what's going on, please?
So, before I was getting only hot water and steam and when I tried expresso all the water went to the disposal tray. So, I tested the 2 way solenoid with a multimeter and there was no resistance between the red and blue connectors.
After I replaced the 2 way solenoid, the expresso works, but the steam and hot water come out of the porta filter too.
There is no water coming to the diptray as well. Everything goes to the porta filter.
I guess the 2 way valve is always on then.
Do you have any idea of what's going on?

A few options. The tubing from the valves may be hooked up incorrectly or missing an o-ring or something like that. Or, one of the valves could be sticking in one position. If the 3-way valve is stuck on, water will always go out the center of the 2 valves to the porta filter. Or it might be the main circuit board has an issue, such as a shorted Triac that turns on the 3-way valve and that is causing it to stay on all the time. Simple test is pull off one of the power wires to that solenoid and run a cycle. That forces that 3-way valve to be off which should send water only to the hot water/steam valve. You could try the same with the 2-way valve, although it is only involved in the purge cycle at the end of use. It should open for about 30 seconds to vent off excess water/steam to the drip tray.
@@The4Crawler thanks a lot for the quick reply! I made a mistake in my first comment. It was the 3 way valve that's always on and not the 2 way.
With the 3 way valve connected, it stays always on, this I tested with the multimeter. When I disconnect it, I have only hot water / steam. I'll try to check on the main circuit board now.

I also realised that the red wire of the 3 way valve has voltage even when the machine is off and only plugged to power. I have 230V.
Amazing! Do you know how to turn off the auto switchoff?
For the whole machine, I'm not sure. I think that feature is programmed into the firmware on the main controller. You might try contacting Breville support and see if they have any tips for doing that.

Yes, push button coffee again! I got pretty good at making coffee in my french press on the gas cooktop, but that doesn't compare to a shot of espresso.
Hi. I have a 8 year old Breville 860XL that has recently started tripping the GFCI but only when the extraction process is started. The steam and grinder do not trip it. There is probably some current leakage in one of the solenoid valves that is causing this. It functions normally when you plug it into a non-GFCI outlet. Could you tell me which valve comes on during the extraction cycle? Are there any other components that you think could do this? There has been a water leak that has been going on for a while, but only when using the machine. I have a VIZ variable isolation transformer similar to the one you use in your videos, so I could measure the leakage current with the solenoid out.

It's easy to replace the black solenoid on top of the valve, likely yours has damage from water leaking on it or it's cracked:

While it's possible to get these old Olab solenoids working again, I would really suggest getting one of the new solenoid assemblies ordered (it may takes ~2 months to arrive). The new solenoids seem to work so much better than the old ones.
Hi I have same your machine 870XL I change the solenoid valve because its damaged but still there is issue I tried to discover where is the wrong and the buttons all of them light on please if you have any idea respond to me, thanks.
haven't heard of that issue before, so this is just a guess. Try unplugging the machine for 10 minutes and see if that resets it. If that doesn't help, try unplugging it then unplug and reconnect all the connections on the main circuit board. Or contact Breville support and see if they have any ideas.
