Great video! I just followed this step by step and the noise stopped; however, I realized I couldn't get the machine up to pressure for about 5 shots. Then I realized I had some leakage somewhere. I opened it up again and saw water and condensation on the majority of the machine. Would this be from the hose at the reservoir or somewhere along the solenoid? I got all of the o-rings back in place with the pins above the brass piece on the 3 hoses of the solenoid. I also got a zip tie on the main vein to the left. I'd love some help troubleshooting!
Best answer is to leave the back of the machine open and peek inside with a flashlight while you run a cycle and see if you can catch the source of the leak. If it's wet now, leave the back open until it dries out so it's easier to find where the water or steam is coming from. You need to leave the bottom of the back cover close to the base of the machine so the water hose reaches, but you can leave the top of the back cover angled outward. Just be careful poking around inside with the machine is plugged in/running as there's exposed live electrical connections inside.

Thank you! This was a great video. The only thing I wish was there was a video on how to put it back together. I did succeed, but the one thing I learned was that the orange rubber seals in the old solenoid need to be placed on the pipes rather than just seating them back into the new solenoid, otherwise the pipes don't go in and the clips are hard to get in. Otherwise, this was great. You saved me a ton of $$ not buying a new one.
Good tip. I found the opposite, that installing the o-rings in the fittings first worked better for me. But for sure, try out each way and use what works best.
Thanks for this video. Replaced the solenoid bar yesterday and all good today. Great step by step. Two of the three screws holding the back on at the bottom broke off, corrosion around the screws. It took about an hour.
Glad you got the machine fixed. I also had one screw that was badly corroded. Not sure what material those screws are made of. I initially thought they were stainless steel but the rusting issues seem to say otherwise.

Hi, i have the exact same machine but i bought it at a flymarket and i also have no pressure , and when i push the button for coffee i notice that the water not filling the cup but instead the water poors out of the bottom of the machine? I already open the machine and checked the pomp and it works. The same thing happens when i open the steam (water poors out of the bodem of the machine) ? Any suggestions ???? if i remove the water reservoir and then when you push for steam or coffie there is no water coming out.... when is use steam then i get some steam but also notice water that poors out of the bodem inside the machine ???

Great Video on the problem and how to fix it. I get this buzzing sound and lack of pressure every time I clean and descale the machine with diluted White Vinegar. Do you know if descaling could block these small valves? This is very puzzling to me.
My issue is the right elbow is leaking where it attaches to the rest of the block. (Right where the pin is.) Is it possible just to replace that? Or is there ring inside where they are attached I could replace?doesn’t seem like I can just remove the elbow. Too cramped. Oddly, it still pulls a good shot but it’s leaking bad enough to saturate the bottom where the ground wire it.
Thanks for this video (and the water flow video). My 870XL started losing pressure and I was finding water build up in the bottom reservoir. Your video was extremely helpful. I'm finding that if I turn the Selector Valve to hot water. I get very little hot water coming out and it also comes out of the group head. seems that replacing the solenoid group would possibly remove the issue. Would you agree? I tested the pump and it seems to be working fine. Seems the Solenoid group block is on back order from replacementparts. Bummer!

Could be either. Hot water and steam work with al the solenoids off. Espresso needs the 3-port solenoid to fully open for max. pressure. If you're seeing lots of water into the drip tray while pulling a shot, that's the valve leaking. Could also be the over pressure or safety valve leaking or it could be the pump: th-cam.com/video/i8GGZHKNxPo/w-d-xo.html If you can, open up the back of the machine and peak inside while pulling a shot (be careful, live wires inside). Look for water running into the diffuser from either the solenoid block or the safety valve. If none seen, it's likely the pump. Can be replaced or rebuilt.

Thanks for posting these videos very helpful. I have the same machine and recently had the solenoid block replaced, had I seen these videos first I would've done it myself. I recently descaled my machine using dezcal descaling solution, I'd used this solution before but this time the water started coming out a blackish purple color from the steam wand. I've rinsed it out with water several times and there are tiny black specs of material (not sure i'f its rubber, plastic or metal) coming out mostly when I use the steam wand. I called Breville and they said to descale again (using something other than dezcal) so I used vinegar and i'm still getting the same tiny black specs. Any idea what this could be? I thought maybe the thermocoil was corroded by the solution or something but its an expensive fix. My machine is only 4 years old.

Hi R Brown thanks for sharing your repair videos. I have recently picked up a BES860 unit which apparently has kept tripping the power mains. Would you happen to know what i should be looking for first?
Likely something inside is shorted to ground or line to neutral. If it was tripping an RCD or GFCI breaker, it's likely a ground fault, if it's tripping an over current breaker, it may be line to neutral. An ohm meter between the 3 pins on the power cord might reveal which side the short is on. But could be the incoming power line, the power switching circuit on the main PCB or could be the boiler or thermo-block inside. If you can get a low resistance ohm meter reading, try unplugging/disconnecting parts inside the unit until the resistance jumps up higher.
Hi. Thanks for the explanation. I've had a similar issue and I just replaced the right handside solenoid. However, now I'm getting pressure on the gauge when pulling a shot but never up to max, e.g., when I try to pull a shut with the bascket completely blocked. Any idea what else could affect this? I am getting good steam on the other ends

My bet is that your left solenoid/valve isn't closing fully. Here's why. If you are looking from the rear of your machine at the solenoids, the heated water enters from the right. The first solenoid/valve is a three way that can divert the water to the steam wand. That works for you. When you pull an expresso, that valve lets the water flow left to the middle T that goes to the group head AND the left solenoid/valve MUST close to block the drain. Yours doesn't fully close, so some of your pressure is going to the diffuser, not the group head.
Just put a new one in & it’s buzzing..not getting any steam through the top of the right solenoid (where steam should come out) with steam knob turned on. It just comes out the group head?
Probably worth checking the new solenoid, maybe it's got something inside preventing the slug inside from moving all the way and sealing off one or the other port. With no power to it, hot water/steam should flow out the top port to the manual valve. If it's buzzing, that means it's getting power and there should be no power to either solenoid during hot water or steam function. Might also be the switches from the manual valve are not connected right or there may be an issue with the main control circuit board as it's the thing that turns the solenoids on and off.
@@The4Crawler steam comes out with the blue wire off (open), so I guess it’s a board issue if that’s where the power is relayed on/off to the solenoid, as the power is constant to the right solenoid but not the left. Where’s the manual valve?
@@17th_Street_Preacher I would suspect a problem on the main circuit board. I added some indicator LEDs on my machine (separate video) and I see those faintly glowing at night with the machine plugged in but otherwise turned off. I suspect they use something like a Triac to switch those solenoids on and off (sort of like a light dimmer). That glowing shows there's a slight leakage current and you wouldn't see that if it were something like a relay controlling the solenoids. Triacs can fail open where they don't turn on at all or they can fail shorted and thus stay on all the time. You might first try unplugging and then reconnecting all the connections on the main board to see if that changes anything. Otherwise, a replacement circuit board might be the fix. Breville support might have some other troubleshooting ideas.
Maybe something was hooked up incorrectly when re-assembling the machine. Pop the back cover open and bit and look inside while running a cycle and check for leaks. Check the hoses, make sure they go to the right place and are not leaking, make sure the solenoids power wires are not swapped. Thanks for an excellent video. I strongly suspected a solenoid problem - no steam from the wand, no hot water from the hot water dispenser - so I ordered one, which came in a few days. It was also the Ceme brand, packed inside a Breville bag, so I'm comfortable that it's what Breville uses now. Based on the time of your video I figured it would take about 15 minutes to remove the defective one and replace it with the new one. Then I factored in my personal rule of repairs, which says that I should expect that any repair will take 10 to 20 times as long to complete as my best estimate. Five hours after starting, including a visit to the Home Depot to buy a package of zip ties and a package of lock washers (yes a washer disappeared, as expected - another one of my rules of repairs), I tightened down the last screw, plugged it in and tested. First got steam, then got hot water, then decided to make a cup. It might not have been the most delicious cup of coffee I've ever had, but it was certainly the most satisfying! I give your video 10 stars out of a possible 10. Thanks again!
Hey the 4 crawler nice video thanks. Did you test the voltage? I have 240v from the one on the left and around 13v from the one on the right. I'm wondering if that's normal. The issue is no water coming from brew group. I've take. It apart a few times and descaled with strange results none solving the issue. One time steam came from group. I think replacement is the way forward...
Theory: The buzzing isn't the solenoid, it's the sound of your piston pump pumping against zero resistance BECAUSE the solenoids/valves aren't working. So, water isn't routed by solenoids to the group head or steam wand, but just draining right into the diffuser.

Like others have echoed, great video. I think it was mentioned before but group head stopped pulling shots although steam wand hot water were just fine, I replaced the whole solenoid assembly and now I can pull shots but when I turn on hot water or wand they all go through the group head, any ideas if there is something else that needs to be replaced?

Could be plugged somewhere between the valves. Or power could be getting applied to that 3-port valve and that will send water to the group head.

I have watched the video but I’m not sure what I’m missing, I have replaced back the old solenoid assembly and then I get the steam wand and hot working just fine but when I put the new solenoid assembly the group head works but the steam wand and hot water when I turn it on go through the group head, I even tried replacing the 3 way valve only from the new to the old assembly and same thing happens, I feel like there is a flow issue that is mixed up, any idea??
@@jjletsgetiton As mentioned earlier, the tube out of the top of the 3-port solenoid valve sends water to the hot water/steam valve. That port is normally open, meaning if the 3-port solenoid is not energized, water should flow out that tube. Easy test is to unplug the wires to that solenoid and then see if the hot water/steam works. If it does, that means that 3-port valve is somehow being energized. If disconnecting that valve doesn't make the hot water work, then the tube is either hooked up incorrectly or there is a clog in the top of the valve, the tube or in the hot water valve.

@The4Crawler Same machine here. Creating zero pressure to the group head. I've ran the tests with the dual wall basket and cleaning disc inserted for backflush, and still no pressure. When pulling a shot only the top of the espresso puck gets wet and no water comes through the bottom of the basket. Should I replace the Solenoid block first, or does this seem like a pump issue?

Could also be electrical, the solenoid coil could be defective (see link to photo album with testing information in the pinned comment) or the drive circuit on the main circuit board is defective.
My machine is started doing buzz metallic sound yesterday and stoped working (no water and no pressure nothing).. Where I can find those CEME 397 3/2 way 230v/50hz solenoids to buy? Im from brazil and its almost impossible to get this solenoids here and when I found they ask somethink around 200 us dolars for entire assembly kit, I payed 440 dolars for the entire machine, this price is insane
I've never found a good source for those valves myself. Try eBay and don't limit the search for matching voltage, as you can swap your coil from your old valve to the new one if it's still in good shape. Also, contact your local Breville support folks, they often have the replacement parts available.

Great video, helped me replace both of the valves. Buzzing stopped but no still no water through..so guess im onto the pump next being the issue? Did you find the solenoids fixed your issue or have some also had to replace pump?
The solenoids fixed the no water issue, but I still had low extraction pressure so in the end replaced the pump as well: th-cam.com/video/i8GGZHKNxPo/w-d-xo.html Check and make sure none of the small tubes are clogged and that water is not passing out the overpressure valve.
i have no water going to the brew head. i replaced the pump, still no difference. i've got water coming out of the steam wand but not steam. i'm wondeirng if it's a solenoid, but i don't hear that noise like yours is making i'm at my wits end and have been without my espresso machine for a few months now. :(
You might try popping the back of the machine open enough to take a look inside while running a shot. Be careful as there are live electrical connections exposed. See if you can see where the water is flowing, whether it be out the over pressure valve or out of the hot water steam valve and into the drip tray. Is it generally the black solenoid housing that goes or the internal mechanical plunger? Just wondering if I can get away with replacing just one part? Anyone know?
All depends on the problem. The black part is the coil of wire that makes the magnetic field. Easy enough to test with a multi meter if you have one: photos.app.goo.gl/bN1ugnLPYwvyDcr59 They'll either measure 0 ohms (short circuit) or infinite (open circuit) of they be in the 500-1000 ohm range. Other sign of failure is if they get damaged by leaking water and short to ground, this will cause a GFCI/RCD type receptacle/breaker to trip. If the coil is OK, then it may be the mechanical bits inside the valve that are gummed up, cleaning may help: th-cam.com/video/eljHS_BRJXk/w-d-xo.html Or the internal seals in the valve may be leaking in which case replacement would be the solution.

I disassembled my machine Solis Grind and infuse Pro (the same Breville) (thanks to your videos), and I found that the solenoid ( CEME serie 588 Ac 230 V 50 Hz 3.5 VA) is burnt, and it is clear that there is a water leakage from the upper output of the valve. at the electrical input of the Solenoid i noticed that there is a bridge rectifier (b250c 800) and I would ask you why the added this bridge rectifier.
Glad it helped. Perhaps that is a DC solenoid and thus needs the diode to rectify the AC current to DC. The pump in these machines works that way although is uses a single diode to produce a half wave rectified voltage and that causes the pump to oscillate 50 or 60 times per second, in order to pump water.
@@The4Crawler thank you very much for your response, from the informations printed, it is a AC 230 V solenoid and they used this bridge rectifier only for the first solenoid (3 ways valve). For your informations, 2 years ago I returned the machine under warranty to fix the pressure and water flow problem and I think they added this bridge (I am not sure but I noticed the traces of disassembly). The solenoid is burnt and its plastic part is melted. I am afraid that this bridge caused this problem.
@@hachimazzahhafi3440 Hard to say on the diode addition. AC and DC coils are buiilt a little different, so maybe the AC coil was affected by the diodes. The solenoid coils are fairly easy to replace, you can often find the separate, or get a new valve (same brand and size) and unscrew the top, slide the burnt coil off and put a new one on.

Assuming the new solenoid is good, then something is causing it to not operate. That "something" is likely the Triac component on the main circuit board that has failed, perhaps that was the source of the smoke you observed earlier. One way to check that is to see my video where I fitted indicator lights to the solenoid coils so that I can see if they are getting power. You might also be able to check that with a volt meter if you're careful. The photo album link I have posted in the video description has details on where that component is on the circuit board if you are able to replace it. Or pick up a replacement circuit board. Or, if you want an alternative work around, you could add a switch to manually turn that solenoid on and off when you wanted to brew coffee. That switch would connect to a power source on side and to the live/hot terminal of the solenoid on the other side.
This video was fantastic! It really help me solve the problem of the buzzing solenoid. I watched both of your videos and that gave me the confidence to go ahead and do it myself. I ordered the part from Genius Coffee N' Espresso out of Canada. Including shipping it came out to $78 dollars. The part I found most challenging was cutting the zip tie without clipping the water hose on the left side. I was able to maneuver in-and-out the solenoid without removing the water hose at the bottom, since you said in your video the screws were kind of a pain to deal with. Overall, it took about 60 minutes. I suggest doing this when you are not pressed for time, and you have full concentration on the project. Thank you again for posting the videos!!
Yes, as I posted in a follow up video, it was just the 3-port valve that was sticking: th-cam.com/video/yYJRQu3ZUik/w-d-xo.html I cleaned that and restored it to operation. But at the time, I had the 2 valve assembly in hand and it was easiest to swap that out and get the machine working again.
I cannot thank you enough for this extremely useful video. Thanks to the very clear demonstration and narrative, I was able to remove my old solenoid valve, order a replacement and reinstall the new one. Its so nice to have the buzzing noise sorted out and be drinking good coffee again! I've kept my old solenoid valve and will see if I can clean it using your other video in due course. Thanks again!!
Great video sir! My problem is that there is no water coming out of the steam wand (or the hot water pipe). When I switch the steam wand (or hot water) on, water starts coming out of the portafilter housing instead of the steam wand (or hot water pipe). Do you think this could be a problem with the Solenoid valve, or is it something else (and if so, any ideas what I should be looking for)?
Follow the water: th-cam.com/video/9lMw6ooiqPI/w-d-xo.html Either the hot water/steam valve is clogged (inside) or the tubing is plugged or the solenoid, while new, may not be fully closing and sending water to that valve or a combination of those things. For hot water to get to the group head, the 3-port solenoid has to be open, which seals off the passage to the hot water valve. If everything else checks out, it may be that the main circuit board is sending AC voltage to that solenoid all the time. Try unplugging that solenoid and then test the hot water. Hard to say. Hot water steam flow is out of the top of the 3-port solenoid and that should be off during that operation: th-cam.com/video/9lMw6ooiqPI/w-d-xo.html Could be inlet filter is blocked, pump isn't producing enough pressure, safety vale is stuck open and sending water to the drip tray. Solenoid may be clogged such that it doesn't seal off the group head passage or it may be getting powered all the time or perhaps some of the tubes are hooked up wrong or clogged or maybe the hot water/steam valve is clogged.
Hey so i replaced solenoids and coffee is extracting but my steam arm is not working all the steam is coming through the group handle? Do you know guys what this is?

Or wiring was mixed up or the new solenoid valve is somehow stuck open or was installed backwards. Water should flow out the top of the 2/3 way valve unless a brew cycle is running. Quick test is unplug one of the wires to that solenoid and if how water works, then that solenoid may be getting power when it's not supposed to. In that case, it may be the main circuit board has a shorted driver for that valve and needs to be repaired or replaced.

Water should come from the thermo -coil to the side of that right side valve then out the top to the hot water / steam valve. If you disconnect one of the wires to the black solenoid coil and try the machine, that will make sure no power is going to the solenoid (be careful as there are live electrical connections inside the machine, so unplug and then wrap some electrical tape around the connection you pull off. If steam works then, something is causing the solenoid coil to turn on. If it still doesn't work, the valve inside may be stuck open.
I have a Breville/Sage Barista Express BES870XL- the water coming out of the wand just stopped. Motor sound comes and goes. What’s wrong? What can I do to fix the machine.

@@marycash3532 Oh, I thought you said you had some water/steam out the wand. If the pump isn't running, it might be the switches on the hot water/steam valve that are either disconnected or not working: th-cam.com/video/9lMw6ooiqPI/w-d-xo.html Those are what tells the machine what position the switch is in. In hot water mode, it runs the pump continuous, in steam mode it raises the temperature and the pump runs intermittently. Might be the wires from the switches need to be re-seated at the main circuit board for example.
Thanks! I had no water coming out of the brew head, but water coming through the steam wand and hot water spout. Ordering and replacing the whole solenoid unit completely fixed my Breville Infuser
😢 Hello. In sage, I replaced the gasket because during high pressure cleaning, the gasket shot and popped out. I replaced the gasket with a new one and the same thing happens. When cleaning under pressure, it shoots and the gasket pops out of the mount. Water flows sideways and cleaning cannot be completed by descaling. What should I do, help. Sage is no longer under warranty.
Never ran into that exact issue myself. Some ideas are to pull out the rubber cleaning disc and make sure the small hole isn't plugged and that it's nut stuck down to the filter basket. I've had that happen before and nothing would come through on a cleaning cycle. Also check that the over pressure valve above the pump is not stuck closed, that should open and let excess pressure out of the system. Then double check that the gasket on the group head (what I assume is blowing out on your machine) is installed properly. Have heard of folks having an issue with a loose screw or something up there that can cause it to leak.
@@The4Crawler I disassembled the machine and the screws are well tightened. Everything should work fine in my opinion because nothing is clogged. Unfortunately, when cleaning the machine, it does not withstand the pressure and water pours out of the seal, because it blows it out
@@AliceWIrlandii The pressure during cleaning is generally not very high in normal conditions. The only time I see high pressure during a cleaning cycle is when either the cleaning disc is clogged or if I'm using a dual wall filter basket for cleaning, that small orifice in the filter basket is clogged.
@@The4Crawler I have this express two years, there have been no problems so far, even during cleaning. I've checked all possibilities and I have no idea why it's blowing the gasket.
@@AliceWIrlandii Try some variations on cleaning. Use different filter baskets (dual and single wall) for example. Or skip the cleaning disc and just use a dual wall filter for example. See if you can narrow down what is causing the high pressure. Like I said, I've only seen high pressure (no blown gasket on my machine) when either the filter basket or the cleaning disc is clogged. I just had to unclog my dual wall filter basket last week because it was clogged and would flow no water. If I ran that in a cleaning cycle, the pressure gauge would run up to the top and sit there with no water flowing.
I have a Breville Duo-Temp.I get 1.5 cups of water that comes over the coffee grounds. How do you reduce the water flow. Too much water. Does a part need replaced? What can we do to fix this problem.
Likely similar to the Barista Express that I have. There's a small water flow meter between the tank and water pump. It should be the only thing with wires coming off it down there: th-cam.com/video/9lMw6ooiqPI/w-d-xo.html That senses the water flow and compares that to what you have pre-set. First try resetting the water volume on the machine, see your Owner's Manual for details. If that's OK, then try running a descaling flush or two and see if that will free up the flow meter. It has a little paddle wheel that spins as water flows through. If that gets gummed up, it spins too slow or not at all and the machine doesn't know how much water has been pumped.
@@The4Crawler I located a white circular plastic disk with three wire coming out of the top-white, red and green wire. This is located to the bottom left - looking into back of unit. Hi, your video was helpful in replacing the solenoid. After I replaced it, then water wasn't coming out of the steam wand or the hot water spout. They were working before the solenoid was changed. Now the water and steam comes out through the grouphead when you switch to hot water or steam. The hoses are all clean and not clogged. Any suggestions?
Could be the tubes out of the middle and top of the solenoid block are hooked up wrong: th-cam.com/video/9lMw6ooiqPI/w-d-xo.html Or, the 3-port solenoid valve is stuck open or perhaps it's being powered by the main circuit board all the time. Easy test for that is unplug the wires to that solenoid and see if the hot water/steam work OK. If so, the main board may have a failed Triac that's sending power to that solenoid coil all the time.

To remove, you need to pull out the steel clip that holds the end of the tube in place, one on each end. Then the tube should pull out, it has a small o-ring inside the fitting the seals it. Thanks for the video. Helped me pinpoint the source of low pressure. However, trying to put it back together I was left with extras (unexpected, right?): a red washer (5mm), and a white plastic shoulder washer (6mm, 9mm at the shoulder). Have you got a clue as to where they might belong?

Thank you. This video gave me the direction and confidence to replace our faulty solenoid block without removing the pump (or the water connection to the back). Being a series 1 there was just the single hidden/capped screw in the centre of the back - however there were additional screws on the bottom that had to be removed to take the back off. The clips were very hard to uncouple so a lot of force was required. All works well now but there was debris coming to the steaming wand that required flushing. Our decade old+ machine is working again. I had to use tape on the end of my non-magetic screwdriver to put the block mounting screws back in (used a magnet to ensure they didn't drop when I removed them). Clips and O-rings fiddly but manageable.
Hello, So I found your page when looking for info on fixing my Breville Barista, Ive watched I think all your videos on it (very helpful). I have replaced my pump and the solenoid block. My machine is still just sputtering out a tiny bit of water. Ive about givin up hope. Is there anything else I can look into?
Follow the water: th-cam.com/video/9lMw6ooiqPI/w-d-xo.html Either the hot water/steam valve is clogged (inside) or the tubing is plugged or the solenoid, while new, may not be fully closing and sending water to that valve or a combination of those things. Also, look inside and see if water is flowing out of the over pressure valve, if so it may have some debris inside holding it open, that would bleed off most of the pressure and send that water to the drip tray. For hot water to get to the group head, the 3-port solenoid has to be open, which seals off the passage to the hot water valve. If everything else checks out, it may be that the main circuit board is sending AC voltage to that solenoid all the time. Try unplugging that solenoid and then test the hot water. @@briandierks8668 Could be the over pressure valve on top of the pump venting water out to the drip tray. Or it could be the 3-port solenoid valve not opening fully. That will cause the top port not to seal off fully and send water up to the hot water valve and down into the drip tray. Interesting, you had OLAB assembly but you got it replaced with CEME. Does this make any difference? I do have OLAB as well, trying to find a replacement as the assembly is not available now so buying parts only
That's what I got when I ordered the replacement assembly a few years back. I guess Breville is now using the Ceme valves instead of the Olab. I think the Ceme might have a bit stronger solenoid coil, it think its rated 14VA compared to 10.5VA on the Olab. The Olab valves are nice being all metal, so I'm holding onto my original valves in case I need to replace the Ceme valves. The Olab valves seem to be in greater supply on places like eBay, at least the last time I looked, likely because they're used in other brand machines.
Same problem, but instead of ending up replacing the whole solenoid block, I disassembled the block and removed several blockages with a small pick. After re-assembling everything back into the machine, flushed it with citric acid solution and all is well now. Guess de-scaling every couple of years just isn't enough where we live (hard water)..
Congrats, sounds like a good repair. Yes, I don't think the descaling solution gets into enough places long enough to clean out all the hard water deposits. My old valves responded well to a long soak in citric acid based cleaner.
My BBE has just started to make a brief buzz before it goes into warm up sometimes, is this the death knell for the solenoid valve or would a descale maybe help? I had one cycle where I tried to steam milk but it was still pressurising the grouphead. I powered down cleaned everything up, ran a shot and it went back to normal and steamed the milk fine.

Great video!Quick question, I have a bes860xl the previous version of your machine. I've ben using it for a solid 10 years now multiple times per day. About a year ago I stated to get intermittent solenoid buzzing when i hit my brew button. although it always eventually kicks in and works fine (seems to really hate the cleaning cycle as well) . Recently the buzzing has gotten more regular and can last longer, although it still hasn't fully failed still brews decent shots. Given your experience with the machine do you think its worth replacing the solenoid on mine, or are there other issues on my doorstep given its age. I recently needed to replace the silicone gasket for the water tank. I'm in Canada and it looks like I would need to spend about 125 on the full solenoid assembly and I'm just not sure its worth it.
I had trouble with my pressure gauge not going up and the pump would work inconsistent. I took my breville espresso apart and cleaned all solenoids and hoses and nothing seems to work, any advice?
Does the pump turn on and run? Do you hard the solenoid valves clicking on and off? Is any water flowing anywhere, like to the hot water dispenser or the drip tray? Could be the inlet water filter is clogged. See my video on the water flow in the machine and try to trace the water from the tank to wherever it's going or not going.
Breville Barista 1870 years old. No longer allows for programming of coffee and grinding of bean size, only works if manually stopped, currently experiences new issues with extracting the coffee. What could be the reason for us experiencing these issues, the machine is only 4 years old.
No expert on that issue, but common factor of all those features is the main controller board (PCB), so that would be a good place to start. Try unplugging the machine for a while and see if that resets it. Also try resetting the brew amounts to the factory default, consult owner's manual. If not, contact Breville support and see if they have any other troubleshooting ideas. PCB can be replaced if needed. Other causes might be the water flow sensor (see video on the 870 water flow in this channel) that can affect brew quantity. Bean setting is just a timer function, there's no sensor involved other than the setting on the dial.
In case it's of interest, I took the power supply / controller board (RPBBV187000) apart, some of the electrolytic capacitors are Teapo, a pretty cheap brand...
Great information, thanks for posting. I've not removed that main PCB yet to have a look. Yes, low cost electrolytic caps are a potential source of problems when they start to dry out.
Before you rush out and buy solenoids take them out (they are a one piece unit and only 2 screws to remove it after disconnecting the hoses and wires) and inspect the tube/hose sockets. I found a broken o ring in one of the hose sockets and a piece of the o ring was lodged in the hole blocking the water flow. Surprise! Its best to pry out all the o rings and make sure they are all in one piece. Also check the hose sockets to where the hoses plug in on the other end of the hoses. Bottom line is if an o ring is broken or dislodged it can block the water flow causing the same symptoms as shown in this video. Anyone want to buy a spare solenoid set for a barista express?
Good point on checking out the old parts. That wasn't the problem in my case, which I cover in later videos in this playlist. Thanks for all the detailed videos - exactly what I needed! Unfortunately I can't find the parts available anywhere in Canada and even US/overseas - seems to be a global shortage of coffee machine parts according to a local repair shop I contacted. I might be able to purchase the 2-way OLAB solenoid and the CEME 3-way solenoid separately; the issue is the OLAB have a metal base that isn't compatible with the CEME without valve modifications. Do you think it is possible to simply re-use the existing OLAB armature and take off the OLAB 9200H solenoid and put the CEME 3-way on the armature? Hope this makes sense!
There seems to be a lot of similarity in these sorts of parts among different mfgs. and I suspect that the coils can swap between different makes. Reason being is they all use the same thread size and thus the same diameters on the tubes that the coils fit over. They make coils of different voltages for different applications, 24V, 120V, 240V, etc. and the coil is often the only difference between a 120V and a 240V valve for example.
Thank you so much for this video. I pulled out my solenoid valve and tried cleaning the valves and soaking them in vinegar like others have suggested. This didn't work for me. In the end I got a replacement from big warehouse spares in Sydney that arrived in two days and was easy to install following this video. The machine is running great again.
@@The4Crawler Yep, if you try a cleaning when you first start hearing the solenoid complain....more likely a cleaning will do the trick. It you let the buzzing go until the solenoid(s) fails....much more likely to need a replacement. Thank you for the video.
Such a helpful video, R Brown! I wanted to share my "WHAAAT?!?!" moment from when was trying to get the back panel off of my BES870XL, as it might help others. Mine might be an older model because on the back of the unit instead of the five screws up top and three (with plugs) on the water reservoir level (as you discuss at the about the 1:50 mark in your video), my unit had five up top, two on the bottom of the unit, and three clips on each side. Confusingly, Breville put a screwhole/plug in the center position (right next to the water reservoir bracket, like your model) but it's a dummy: there isn't a screw down at the bottom of the four inch recessed hole. It took me about 45 minutes of not-so-nice language and confusion to figure that out! Eventually I was able to find the right screws to remove the back panel. The insides are exactly the same as in your video, so everything else went perfectly. Anyways, it's up and running now, and it now operates so quielty and smoothly that my only regret is that I'd repaired it sooner. Happy espresso time, everyone!
I have the BES870XL as well. I found the two screws on the bottom, but can’t figure out how to remove the back plate. I managed to pop out the clips, but the panel still seems attached at the bottom and I don’t want to break it /: did you find anything else that needs to be removed?

Can the solenoid block issues be fixed by simply cleaning the block? I'd like to just soak the solenoid assembly in a cleaning solution if that would fix the issue.
Hi Sir. I have the BES 860 XL and like your machine the original solenoids are OLAB instead of CEME. I did the order and receive the CEME and after the installation the 3 way solenoide was not activating. I noticed a difference of TF in the specifications. The OLAB TF is 135 vs CEME TF 145. Can be that the main reason to avoid the activation toward the group head ?
I think the TF specification is the "fluid temperature", so that should not be an issue. The water temperature will be around 100C. It may be you have a bad connection or broken wire on that solenoid if both the old and new solenoids were not actuating. You can test the solenoid: th-cam.com/video/yYJRQu3ZUik/w-d-xo.html Or you could hook up something like an indicator or test light or a volt meter to the solenoid wire and see if it's getting power: th-cam.com/video/9cC-m3a-oXY/w-d-xo.html If all is well with the solenoid and you are not getting power to it, the main circuit board for the machine may be defective and need to be replaced.

Thanks for your video. Is the solenoid the same for 2 way or 3 way valve? In your video, the CEME solenoid of 2 way valve has different Vxxxxx...number from the solenoid of 3 way valve.
As far as I know, they seem to be the same, as in the plastic solenoid coil. I didn't disassemble the Ceme solenoids but they both had the same VA rating. On the Olab version, they are identical. All the coils do is create a magnetic field that pulls the iron slug inside the valve up. Same thing in the 2 or 3 way valve, just in the 2 way, it only opens the bottom port. In the 3 way valve, it opens the bottom and simultaneously closes the top port. I think Ceme must add the valve p/n onto the coil, while Olab has the coils marked with the coil p/n.

I'm sure my solenoids do need replacing, but for now...the pressure is not an issue. The machine keeps switching off randomly. Having stripped the machine, cleaned it thoroughly and removed any potential blockages, I'm thinking that the the on/off switch may be worn. Any suggestions here?
The switches on these machines are more of a soft switch. They just send signals to the main circuit board that controls the machine. Might check out this page for some troubleshooting ideas: siber-sonic.com/appliance/800Electrical.html It's for an earlier model but apparently all the 800 series machines are quite similar. Likely guess is a loose connection some place or something like a faulty capacitor or similar part.
I did try that in a subsequent video: th-cam.com/video/eljHS_BRJXk/w-d-xo.html I had already ordered and received the new Ceme solenoids and put those in directly so I could get the machine back working. The new valves seem to be a better design than the older Olab parts. No coffee in the valves but the 3-port valve was a bit gummed up with something, maybe hard water deposits. I'm keeping those valves, now cleaned, as a working replacement.
Hi there, I am trying to repair my BES870, it has one of those plastic solenoid assemblies rather than the metal one like you use in your cleaning video. Is it still possible to pull them apart and descale/clean them? My machine has no water at the group head and no pressure. steam wand works fine, hot water works but not great.
I never tore my new Ceme/plastic valves apart before I installed them. Not sure it they can be taken apart or not. Maybe another viewer can chime in if they have done so.
@@The4Crawler I did manage to pull them apart in the end. Undid the bolt at the top and battled the circlips off and they popped open. In the end, my issue (no water at the group head) was a blocked water dispenser. I noticed when I pulled the tube that ran to the water dispenser/group head out that the o-ring was filthy, so I used a straw brush to scrub that out and I got a small flow of water before it stopped again.. so did it again more thoroughly and it started flowing from the group head. I have a working machine again! Thank you for your videos, they were really helpful!
@@edmz1234 Good to know those valves are serviceable. I guess the circlips are more suited for the Ceme plastic housing than the threaded parts on the Olab brass valves.

Now that I replaced the solenoid block, my initial problem is fixed (making good shots) but the steamer and hot water is no longer working. Could there be any other possible issues other than the solenoid? I would appreciate any input.
Perhaps the hoses were not reconnected properly after the solenoid replacement? By default the hot water/steam feature works off the normally open port of the 3-way solenoid: th-cam.com/video/9lMw6ooiqPI/w-d-xo.html So unless that port is blocked or the solenoid is stuck fully open, I would check the plumbing inside.
Mr. Brown, thanks again 🙏🏾. I have checked the hoses for proper connectivity, the problem remained. I then swapped the new 3 way solenoid coil with that of the old OEM one then reverted back to the original problem 🤣. I now have the seamer and hot water working well, but no espresso shots (I.e., no pressure or water coming at all). I am thinking the problem could be elsewhere... any thoughts? BTW, prior to the problem - failing to make espresso shots, there were numerous occurrences of power tripping when I tried/pushed to make espresso shots.
@@himbol7531 See if you can open up the 3/2 way solenoid and see if it's plugged inside on the upper port as that's the one that hot water/steam flows out of. The other test would be to try blowing in the lower right side port and feel for air coming out the top port with no power connected to the solenoid. That's the normal flow direction with the solenoid not energized.
Thank you so much for this video! We waited patiently for a replacement three way valve and replaced it just now. Our original problem of no water down the group head is fixed, but now the steam/hot water come out of the group head instead of the wand. I flipped back to the old three way valve and now the wand works but no water down the head group. I read through the comments and noted the gentleman who mentioned unplugging the upper blue wire from the solenoid - that worked but as soon as the plug went back on, the water/steam started coming back out of the group head instead of the wand. Any idea on what to do to try and fix the machine?! Thank you in advance!
Water flows to the ground head when the 3-way solenoid is powered. It flows to the hot water valve when it's not powered. This video explains the water flow in the machine: th-cam.com/video/9lMw6ooiqPI/w-d-xo.html Check the new valve you got, unpowered you should be able to blow air into the right side port, where the right angle fitting would be. Air should come out the top port with no power applied. Also, compare the printing on the solenoid coil between the 2 valves and see if they are similar rating for voltage. @@tonyjarjoura4343 Yes, a toggle switch would do the job for an inexpensive repair. Otherwise, it could be something like a bad component on the circuit board that's sending AC power to the solenoid all the time. It's supposed to only get power during an espresso cycle.
Hey mate, did you ever get a chance to pull apart, see if it was salvageable? Just about to do this on mine after running descaler and now getting no flow!
I did go through and clean the inside of the valves and I think they're fully operational now. But since I have the new valve block installed and that's working great, I don't want to tear the machine apart to test the old valves. If the water isn't flowing, check out this video: th-cam.com/video/9lMw6ooiqPI/w-d-xo.html and see if you can find out where it's going. Maybe some tubes are hooked up the the wrong places or a valve is stuck open or closed or the over pressure valve is passing water to the drip tray, etc. Pop open the back of the machine and peek inside while running a cycle. Be careful as there are live electrical connections inside. Usually you can see where the water is flowing.

I went a bit rash, just bought a new BES870 instead as to be fair, I inherited this 870 from mum a couple of years back and they got it from someone else... who knows the history of it! Getting the local repair agent to check it over, confirm the fault and I'll either fix it myself or get them to fix it and either use the machine at work or sell it on to offset the newy! R brown would you know someplace where I can purchase a non pressurized 54mm double shot basket? Breville is sold out and most breville parts stores are out too. I tried a non oem one from Amazon, no good did not work, zero pressure, it had a bigger circumference, even though it fit my machine, luckily I did not damage my unit. If anyone has information where to source an original breville 54mm basket I would appreciate it.
I haven't looked for that part myself. Probably keep checking with Breville, lots of parts shortages these days with the current situation going on. I've run into random parts shortages with my business the last 6 months. Not sure when you say the filter basket you tried had no pressure. In the non-pressurized, single wall filter basket, all the pressure is generated by the restriction to the flow of water of the packed coffee grounds. @@The4Crawler i was using a nonpressurized basket from Amazon, a knockoff. It didn't work, no pressure at all, when I checked circumference its was bigger than original so it did not lock in like it should, all pressure gone. Went back to my original oem filters and pressure came right back. Amazon filter is junk dont buy.
Had same problem. Wasn’t pick up pressure and noising. Replaced same parts and still have not pressure. Did a test with covering in plastic for “clean me” rubber stuff and it raised pressure this way. When did it with coffee, then it not raising pressure. Any suggestions what can be? Thank you.
Is this with the single or double wall filter basket? If using the double wall basket, it may be the coffee grind is too coarse or not packed firm enough. Or try the single wall basket, it'll create some pressure drop regardless of how the coffee is ground. Might also be the pump not putting out enough volume/pressure, if those other things don't help. I have a video in this playlist on replacing the pump. That helped my low pressure issue.
R Brown R Brown just look over and did descaling. Never done it in 4,5 years. Always was using water from store and wasn’t use machine for around 6 month due to moving and after turn it on it starts buzzing and then change solenoid and it wasn’t pick up pressure. After descale process, pressure start rising again and machine works like new.
@@isane4ek87 Glad you got it working again. I imagine with good purified water, the machine may go a long time between descaling cycles. Water may have started to dry out during those 6 months and led to some excess build-up.
Hello and thank you for your time making these videos. I bought same unit knowing that “steamer and extractor not working”. Brought it home, performed clean cycle with tablets and vinegar 10 times or so. Steamer started to work just fine. When I run coffee thru it-won’t give any pressure(just a few hair thin movements) but when I leave cleaning rubber “plate” inside the portafilter and run “double shot” through it-gives me beautiful 11-12am pressure on a gauge. Could you please direct me what’s need to be changed?
Are you using the single or double wall filter baskets? The double wall will give you some pressure, regardless of the coffee grind and compaction. It won't be high but it should register on the gauge. With the single wall baskets, you need to dial in the grind and compaction of the coffee to get the desired pressure. Finer grind setting and higher compaction will generally raise the pressure. See the videos in this playlist for explanations of the filter baskets and grinder settings.
@@romeoivanovcom You might try the double wall filter and see if that does anything different. It has the built in orifice to create a pressure drop. With adjusting the grinder, it does take a few baskets of grinding to see the change come through unless you go in and clean out the inner passages each time. You're shooting for the texture of regular table salt.
Thanks for the video, needed help in getting the machine apart so i could look into a leak, so infuriating though because I still can't find it. My machine works fine except that it leaks a ton with every cup, took the machine apart, and as far as I can tell, it looks like new inside, not a drop of water or moisture inside the machine, and yet every cup of coffee I make uses 1L of water and spills it all over the counter, resorted to this because the price went up with covid and everyone buying up the machines so i had hoped that i could fix it but it's beyond me, Thanks for the informative video anyway.
I assume the water is leaking out into the drip tray6 and overflowing there onto the counter? @@The4Crawler That Video has really helped me understand the machine more thanks I appreciate it a lot, I think I have it figured out, The drip tray isn't full but the leak is coming from the diffuser area of the machine, I think that the hose that outlets into the drip tray has somehow been pushed up or the diffuser outlet pulled out and the water is instead going to the cavity above the drip tray and is coming out the side of the machine
Great video with clear explanation ! I had the buzzing issue and no water was coming out. After I opened back of machine I noticed there is (lime)scale on the body of 2/3 way solenoid valve. I guess there was a leakage and it damaged the solenoid. I only changed the OLAB 2/3 way solenoid instead of changing whole block and it fixed the problem. Thanks for sharing your video !!!

I changed the solenoid valve. This time I have a new problem, the group head is leaking hot water and when I try to use the steam, nothing gets out of wand. Instead steam gets out of group head. I have tried another brand new solenoid block and another brand new solenoid. But still I have the same problem. I am hoping you have a solution for me :)

For hot water to get to the group head, the 3-port solenoid has to be open, which seals off the passage to the hot water valve. If everything else checks out, it may be that the main circuit board is sending AC voltage to that solenoid all the time. Try unplugging that solenoid and then test the hot water. That's the 3 port solenoid valve most likely. Make sure it's plugged in well. The coils are all the same, but maybe one is weak. Yes, it could be the pump although the pump sound when working or not working is about the same, maybe a bit more muted when the output pressure is low. The solenoids make a nice sharp click when they work and a loud buzzing when then don't.

Hi Sir, my barista express is.working fine for 1 year. Today tried to pull a shot but only hot steam comes out of the group head and hot water outlet. There is no steady flow of water coming out but just strong hot steam. Do you have any idea whats happening? The machine is also very hot to the touch at its top. Please help!
Might try contacting Breville support since the machine is fairly new and may still be under warrantee. It could be the temperature sensor on the thermo-coil has gone bad and it's getting too hot. Other thing to try is resetting the water temperature back to factory default (see the user manual for instructions).

Great video! I just followed this step by step and the noise stopped; however, I realized I couldn't get the machine up to pressure for about 5 shots. Then I realized I had some leakage somewhere. I opened it up again and saw water and condensation on the majority of the machine. Would this be from the hose at the reservoir or somewhere along the solenoid? I got all of the o-rings back in place with the pins above the brass piece on the 3 hoses of the solenoid. I also got a zip tie on the main vein to the left.
I'd love some help troubleshooting!
Best answer is to leave the back of the machine open and peek inside with a flashlight while you run a cycle and see if you can catch the source of the leak. If it's wet now, leave the back open until it dries out so it's easier to find where the water or steam is coming from. You need to leave the bottom of the back cover close to the base of the machine so the water hose reaches, but you can leave the top of the back cover angled outward. Just be careful poking around inside with the machine is plugged in/running as there's exposed live electrical connections inside.

Thank you! This was a great video. The only thing I wish was there was a video on how to put it back together. I did succeed, but the one thing I learned was that the orange rubber seals in the old solenoid need to be placed on the pipes rather than just seating them back into the new solenoid, otherwise the pipes don't go in and the clips are hard to get in. Otherwise, this was great. You saved me a ton of $$ not buying a new one.
Good tip. I found the opposite, that installing the o-rings in the fittings first worked better for me. But for sure, try out each way and use what works best.
Thanks for this video. Replaced the solenoid bar yesterday and all good today. Great step by step. Two of the three screws holding the back on at the bottom broke off, corrosion around the screws. It took about an hour.
Glad you got the machine fixed. I also had one screw that was badly corroded. Not sure what material those screws are made of. I initially thought they were stainless steel but the rusting issues seem to say otherwise.
Some of mine are badly corroded as well, I think they are zinc plated steel or similar.
What did you do to replace the broken screws. Two of ours broke when replacing and now the part won't sit right.

Great Video on the problem and how to fix it. I get this buzzing sound and lack of pressure every time I clean and descale the machine with diluted White Vinegar. Do you know if descaling could block these small valves? This is very puzzling to me.
It might be that the vinegar is breaking loose small flakes of scale in the thermo coil and then that's getting into the valves.
My issue is the right elbow is leaking where it attaches to the rest of the block. (Right where the pin is.)
Is it possible just to replace that? Or is there ring inside where they are attached I could replace?doesn’t seem like I can just remove the elbow. Too cramped.
Oddly, it still pulls a good shot but it’s leaking bad enough to saturate the bottom where the ground wire it.

I'm finding that if I turn the Selector Valve to hot water. I get very little hot water coming out and it also comes out of the group head. seems that replacing the solenoid group would possibly remove the issue. Would you agree? I tested the pump and it seems to be working fine. Seems the Solenoid group block is on back order from replacementparts. Bummer!

Could be either. Hot water and steam work with al the solenoids off. Espresso needs the 3-port solenoid to fully open for max. pressure. If you're seeing lots of water into the drip tray while pulling a shot, that's the valve leaking. Could also be the over pressure or safety valve leaking or it could be the pump:

If you can, open up the back of the machine and peak inside while pulling a shot (be careful, live wires inside). Look for water running into the diffuser from either the solenoid block or the safety valve. If none seen, it's likely the pump. Can be replaced or rebuilt.

Thanks for posting these videos very helpful. I have the same machine and recently had the solenoid block replaced, had I seen these videos first I would've done it myself. I recently descaled my machine using dezcal descaling solution, I'd used this solution before but this time the water started coming out a blackish purple color from the steam wand. I've rinsed it out with water several times and there are tiny black specs of material (not sure i'f its rubber, plastic or metal) coming out mostly when I use the steam wand. I called Breville and they said to descale again (using something other than dezcal) so I used vinegar and i'm still getting the same tiny black specs. Any idea what this could be? I thought maybe the thermocoil was corroded by the solution or something but its an expensive fix. My machine is only 4 years old.

Hi R Brown thanks for sharing your repair videos. I have recently picked up a BES860 unit which apparently has kept tripping the power mains. Would you happen to know what i should be looking for first?
Likely something inside is shorted to ground or line to neutral. If it was tripping an RCD or GFCI breaker, it's likely a ground fault, if it's tripping an over current breaker, it may be line to neutral. An ohm meter between the 3 pins on the power cord might reveal which side the short is on. But could be the incoming power line, the power switching circuit on the main PCB or could be the boiler or thermo-block inside. If you can get a low resistance ohm meter reading, try unplugging/disconnecting parts inside the unit until the resistance jumps up higher.

However, now I'm getting pressure on the gauge when pulling a shot but never up to max, e.g., when I try to pull a shut with the bascket completely blocked. Any idea what else could affect this? Might be the safety valve is leaking or the pump is worn. I replaced both and got full pressure back on my machine:

My bet is that your left solenoid/valve isn't closing fully. Here's why. If you are looking from the rear of your machine at the solenoids, the heated water enters from the right. The first solenoid/valve is a three way that can divert the water to the steam wand. That works for you. When you pull an expresso, that valve lets the water flow left to the middle T that goes to the group head AND the left solenoid/valve MUST close to block the drain. Yours doesn't fully close, so some of your pressure is going to the diffuser, not the group head.

Just put a new one in & it’s buzzing..not getting any steam through the top of the right solenoid (where steam should come out) with steam knob turned on. It just comes out the group head?
Probably worth checking the new solenoid, maybe it's got something inside preventing the slug inside from moving all the way and sealing off one or the other port. With no power to it, hot water/steam should flow out the top port to the manual valve. If it's buzzing, that means it's getting power and there should be no power to either solenoid during hot water or steam function. Might also be the switches from the manual valve are not connected right or there may be an issue with the main control circuit board as it's the thing that turns the solenoids on and off.
@@The4Crawler steam comes out with the blue wire off (open), so I guess it’s a board issue if that’s where the power is relayed on/off to the solenoid, as the power is constant to the right solenoid but not the left. Where’s the manual valve?

@@17th_Street_Preacher I would suspect a problem on the main circuit board. I added some indicator LEDs on my machine (separate video) and I see those faintly glowing at night with the machine plugged in but otherwise turned off. I suspect they use something like a Triac to switch those solenoids on and off (sort of like a light dimmer). That glowing shows there's a slight leakage current and you wouldn't see that if it were something like a relay controlling the solenoids. Triacs can fail open where they don't turn on at all or they can fail shorted and thus stay on all the time. You might first try unplugging and then reconnecting all the connections on the main board to see if that changes anything. Otherwise, a replacement circuit board might be the fix. Breville support might have some other troubleshooting ideas.

Maybe something was hooked up incorrectly when re-assembling the machine. Pop the back cover open and bit and look inside while running a cycle and check for leaks. Check the hoses, make sure they go to the right place and are not leaking, make sure the solenoids power wires are not swapped. Check if the safety valve is leaking into the diffuser.

Thanks for an excellent video. I strongly suspected a solenoid problem - no steam from the wand, no hot water from the hot water dispenser - so I ordered one, which came in a few days. It was also the Ceme brand, packed inside a Breville bag, so I'm comfortable that it's what Breville uses now. Based on the time of your video I figured it would take about 15 minutes to remove the defective one and replace it with the new one. Then I factored in my personal rule of repairs, which says that I should expect that any repair will take 10 to 20 times as long to complete as my best estimate.
Five hours after starting, including a visit to the Home Depot to buy a package of zip ties and a package of lock washers (yes a washer disappeared, as expected - another one of my rules of repairs), I tightened down the last screw, plugged it in and tested. First got steam, then got hot water, then decided to make a cup. It might not have been the most delicious cup of coffee I've ever had, but it was certainly the most satisfying!

Hey the 4 crawler nice video thanks. Did you test the voltage? I have 240v from the one on the left and around 13v from the one on the right. I'm wondering if that's normal.
The issue is no water coming from brew group. I've take. It apart a few times and descaled with strange results none solving the issue. One time steam came from group. I think replacement is the way forward...
Theory: The buzzing isn't the solenoid, it's the sound of your piston pump pumping against zero resistance BECAUSE the solenoids/valves aren't working. So, water isn't routed by solenoids to the group head or steam wand, but just draining right into the diffuser.
A combination of both I suspect. The solenoid valves themselves do make a buzzing noise when in this condition:

I think it was mentioned before but group head stopped pulling shots although steam wand hot water were just fine, I replaced the whole solenoid assembly and now I can pull shots but when I turn on hot water or wand they all go through the group head, any ideas if there is something else that needs to be replaced?

I cover the water flow in the machine. The tube out of the top of the 3-port solenoid valve sends water to the hot water/steam valve. Could be plugged somewhere between the valves. Or power could be getting applied to that 3-port valve and that will send water to the group head.

@@jjletsgetiton As mentioned earlier, the tube out of the top of the 3-port solenoid valve sends water to the hot water/steam valve. That port is normally open, meaning if the 3-port solenoid is not energized, water should flow out that tube. Easy test is to unplug the wires to that solenoid and then see if the hot water/steam works. If it does, that means that 3-port valve is somehow being energized. If disconnecting that valve doesn't make the hot water work, then the tube is either hooked up incorrectly or there is a clog in the top of the valve, the tube or in the hot water valve.

@The4Crawler Same machine here. Creating zero pressure to the group head. I've ran the tests with the dual wall basket and cleaning disc inserted for backflush, and still no pressure. When pulling a shot only the top of the espresso puck gets wet and no water comes through the bottom of the basket. Should I replace the Solenoid block first, or does this seem like a pump issue?

I've never found a good source for those valves myself. Try eBay and don't limit the search for matching voltage, as you can swap your coil from your old valve to the new one if it's still in good shape.
Also, contact your local Breville support folks, they often have the replacement parts available.

Check and make sure none of the small tubes are clogged and that water is not passing out the overpressure valve.
i have no water going to the brew head. i replaced the pump, still no difference. i've got water coming out of the steam wand but not steam. i'm wondeirng if it's a solenoid, but i don't hear that noise like yours is making i'm at my wits end and have been without my espresso machine for a few months now. :(
You might try popping the back of the machine open enough to take a look inside while running a shot. Be careful as there are live electrical connections exposed. See if you can see where the water is flowing, whether it be out the over pressure valve or out of the hot water steam valve and into the drip tray. That's how I found a water leak in my machine:

Is it generally the black solenoid housing that goes or the internal mechanical plunger? Just wondering if I can get away with replacing just one part? Anyone know?
All depends on the problem. The black part is the coil of wire that makes the magnetic field. Easy enough to test with a multi meter if you have one:

They'll either measure 0 ohms (short circuit) or infinite (open circuit) of they be in the 500-1000 ohm range. Other sign of failure is if they get damaged by leaking water and short to ground, this will cause a GFCI/RCD type receptacle/breaker to trip.
If the coil is OK, then it may be the mechanical bits inside the valve that are gummed up, cleaning may help:

Or the internal seals in the valve may be leaking in which case replacement would be the solution.

I disassembled my machine Solis Grind and infuse Pro (the same Breville) (thanks to your videos), and I found that the solenoid ( CEME serie 588 Ac 230 V 50 Hz 3.5 VA) is burnt, and it is clear that there is a water leakage from the upper output of the valve.
at the electrical input of the Solenoid i noticed that there is a bridge rectifier (b250c 800) and I would ask you why the added this bridge rectifier.
Glad it helped. Perhaps that is a DC solenoid and thus needs the diode to rectify the AC current to DC. The pump in these machines works that way although is uses a single diode to produce a half wave rectified voltage and that causes the pump to oscillate 50 or 60 times per second, in order to pump water.

2 years ago I returned the machine under warranty to fix the pressure and water flow problem and I think they added this bridge (I am not sure but I noticed the traces of disassembly). The solenoid is burnt and its plastic part is melted. I am afraid that this bridge caused this problem.
@@hachimazzahhafi3440 Hard to say on the diode addition. AC and DC coils are buiilt a little different, so maybe the AC coil was affected by the diodes. The solenoid coils are fairly easy to replace, you can often find the separate, or get a new valve (same brand and size) and unscrew the top, slide the burnt coil off and put a new one on.

This is on the older brass/Olab valves, but I think it's similar on the newer Ceme valves.
When I hit the double cup the water just dispense to the bottom pan
Assuming the new solenoid is good, then something is causing it to not operate. That "something" is likely the Triac component on the main circuit board that has failed, perhaps that was the source of the smoke you observed earlier. One way to check that is to see my video where I fitted indicator lights to the solenoid coils so that I can see if they are getting power. You might also be able to check that with a volt meter if you're careful. The photo album link I have posted in the video description has details on where that component is on the circuit board if you are able to replace it. Or pick up a replacement circuit board.
Or, if you want an alternative work around, you could add a switch to manually turn that solenoid on and off when you wanted to brew coffee. That switch would connect to a power source on side and to the live/hot terminal of the solenoid on the other side.
This video was fantastic! It really help me solve the problem of the buzzing solenoid. I watched both of your videos and that gave me the confidence to go ahead and do it myself. I ordered the part from Genius Coffee N' Espresso out of Canada. Including shipping it came out to $78 dollars. The part I found most challenging was cutting the zip tie without clipping the water hose on the left side. I was able to maneuver in-and-out the solenoid without removing the water hose at the bottom, since you said in your video the screws were kind of a pain to deal with. Overall, it took about 60 minutes. I suggest doing this when you are not pressed for time, and you have full concentration on the project. Thank you again for posting the videos!!

No need to change both of the electrovalves..Usually the flow restrictor has the problem and with a good citric acid u fix the problem..

I cleaned that and restored it to operation. But at the time, I had the 2 valve assembly in hand and it was easiest to swap that out and get the machine working again.

Great video sir! My problem is that there is no water coming out of the steam wand (or the hot water pipe). When I switch the steam wand (or hot water) on, water starts coming out of the portafilter housing instead of the steam wand (or hot water pipe). Do you think this could be a problem with the Solenoid valve, or is it something else (and if so, any ideas what I should be looking for)?

Either the hot water/steam valve is clogged (inside) or the tubing is plugged or the solenoid, while new, may not be fully closing and sending water to that valve or a combination of those things. For hot water to get to the group head, the 3-port solenoid has to be open, which seals off the passage to the hot water valve. If everything else checks out, it may be that the main circuit board is sending AC voltage to that solenoid all the time. Try unplugging that solenoid and then test the hot water. If it works normally, then it may be the circuit board:

Could be inlet filter is blocked, pump isn't producing enough pressure, safety vale is stuck open and sending water to the drip tray. Solenoid may be clogged such that it doesn't seal off the group head passage or it may be getting powered all the time or perhaps some of the tubes are hooked up wrong or clogged or maybe the hot water/steam valve is clogged.

It might be water tube connections were mixed up when reassembling the machine. Or wiring was mixed up or the new solenoid valve is somehow stuck open or was installed backwards. Water should flow out the top of the 2/3 way valve unless a brew cycle is running. Quick test is unplug one of the wires to that solenoid and if how water works, then that solenoid may be getting power when it's not supposed to. In that case, it may be the main circuit board has a shorted driver for that valve and needs to be repaired or replaced.

@@kacpertuchel9442 " tube which goes from coil to solenoid". is that the tube out of the top of the 2/3 port solenoid valves or the one that comes into the side of that valve? Water should come from the thermo -coil to the side of that right side valve then out the top to the hot water / steam valve.
If you disconnect one of the wires to the black solenoid coil and try the machine, that will make sure no power is going to the solenoid (be careful as there are live electrical connections inside the machine, so unplug and then wrap some electrical tape around the connection you pull off.
If steam works then, something is causing the solenoid coil to turn on. If it still doesn't work, the valve inside may be stuck open.
I have a Breville/Sage Barista Express BES870XL- the water coming out of the wand just stopped. Motor sound comes and goes. What’s wrong? What can I do to fix the machine.
Might be plugged up, try a descaling flush or two running solution through the hot water and steam wand. May take a few cycles to unclog it.

Those are what tells the machine what position the switch is in. In hot water mode, it runs the pump continuous, in steam mode it raises the temperature and the pump runs intermittently. Might be the wires from the switches need to be re-seated at the main circuit board for example.

😢 Hello. In sage, I replaced the gasket because during high pressure cleaning, the gasket shot and popped out. I replaced the gasket with a new one and the same thing happens. When cleaning under pressure, it shoots and the gasket pops out of the mount. Water flows sideways and cleaning cannot be completed by descaling. What should I do, help. Sage is no longer under warranty.
Never ran into that exact issue myself. Some ideas are to pull out the rubber cleaning disc and make sure the small hole isn't plugged and that it's nut stuck down to the filter basket. I've had that happen before and nothing would come through on a cleaning cycle. Also check that the over pressure valve above the pump is not stuck closed, that should open and let excess pressure out of the system. Then double check that the gasket on the group head (what I assume is blowing out on your machine) is installed properly. Have heard of folks having an issue with a loose screw or something up there that can cause it to leak.
@@The4Crawler I disassembled the machine and the screws are well tightened. Everything should work fine in my opinion because nothing is clogged. Unfortunately, when cleaning the machine, it does not withstand the pressure and water pours out of the seal, because it blows it out
@@AliceWIrlandii The pressure during cleaning is generally not very high in normal conditions. The only time I see high pressure during a cleaning cycle is when either the cleaning disc is clogged or if I'm using a dual wall filter basket for cleaning, that small orifice in the filter basket is clogged.
@@The4Crawler I have this express two years, there have been no problems so far, even during cleaning. I've checked all possibilities and I have no idea why it's blowing the gasket.
@@AliceWIrlandii Try some variations on cleaning. Use different filter baskets (dual and single wall) for example. Or skip the cleaning disc and just use a dual wall filter for example. See if you can narrow down what is causing the high pressure. Like I said, I've only seen high pressure (no blown gasket on my machine) when either the filter basket or the cleaning disc is clogged. I just had to unclog my dual wall filter basket last week because it was clogged and would flow no water. If I ran that in a cleaning cycle, the pressure gauge would run up to the top and sit there with no water flowing.
I have a Breville Duo-Temp.I get 1.5 cups of water that comes over the coffee grounds. How do you reduce the water flow. Too much water. Does a part need replaced? What can we do to fix this problem.
Likely similar to the Barista Express that I have. There's a small water flow meter between the tank and water pump. It should be the only thing with wires coming off it down there:

That senses the water flow and compares that to what you have pre-set. First try resetting the water volume on the machine, see your Owner's Manual for details. If that's OK, then try running a descaling flush or two and see if that will free up the flow meter. It has a little paddle wheel that spins as water flows through. If that gets gummed up, it spins too slow or not at all and the machine doesn't know how much water has been pumped.

Hi, your video was helpful in replacing the solenoid. After I replaced it, then water wasn't coming out of the steam wand or the hot water spout. They were working before the solenoid was changed. Now the water and steam comes out through the grouphead when you switch to hot water or steam. The hoses are all clean and not clogged. Any suggestions?

To remove, you need to pull out the steel clip that holds the end of the tube in place, one on each end. Then the tube should pull out, it has a small o-ring inside the fitting the seals it. Sometimes it can be hard to pull out of that o-ring if it's been there for a long time. We have replacement o-rings available:

Thanks for the video. Helped me pinpoint the source of low pressure. However, trying to put it back together I was left with extras (unexpected, right?): a red washer (5mm), and a white plastic shoulder washer (6mm, 9mm at the shoulder). Have you got a clue as to where they might belong?

Thank you. This video gave me the direction and confidence to replace our faulty solenoid block without removing the pump (or the water connection to the back). Being a series 1 there was just the single hidden/capped screw in the centre of the back - however there were additional screws on the bottom that had to be removed to take the back off. The clips were very hard to uncouple so a lot of force was required. All works well now but there was debris coming to the steaming wand that required flushing. Our decade old+ machine is working again. I had to use tape on the end of my non-magetic screwdriver to put the block mounting screws back in (used a magnet to ensure they didn't drop when I removed them). Clips and O-rings fiddly but manageable.

@@briandierks8668 Could be the over pressure valve on top of the pump venting water out to the drip tray. Or it could be the 3-port solenoid valve not opening fully. That will cause the top port not to seal off fully and send water up to the hot water valve and down into the drip tray. Interesting, you had OLAB assembly but you got it replaced with CEME. Does this make any difference? I do have OLAB as well, trying to find a replacement as the assembly is not available now so buying parts only
That's what I got when I ordered the replacement assembly a few years back. I guess Breville is now using the Ceme valves instead of the Olab. I think the Ceme might have a bit stronger solenoid coil, it think its rated 14VA compared to 10.5VA on the Olab. The Olab valves are nice being all metal, so I'm holding onto my original valves in case I need to replace the Ceme valves. The Olab valves seem to be in greater supply on places like eBay, at least the last time I looked, likely because they're used in other brand machines.

Same problem, but instead of ending up replacing the whole solenoid block, I disassembled the block and removed several blockages with a small pick. After re-assembling everything back into the machine, flushed it with citric acid solution and all is well now. Guess de-scaling every couple of years just isn't enough where we live (hard water)..
Congrats, sounds like a good repair. Yes, I don't think the descaling solution gets into enough places long enough to clean out all the hard water deposits. My old valves responded well to a long soak in citric acid based cleaner.
My BBE has just started to make a brief buzz before it goes into warm up sometimes, is this the death knell for the solenoid valve or would a descale maybe help? I had one cycle where I tried to steam milk but it was still pressurising the grouphead. I powered down cleaned everything up, ran a shot and it went back to normal and steamed the milk fine.
Probably worth running a descaling cycle or two and see if that helps. The valves might be starting to stick internally.

Great video!Quick question, I have a bes860xl the previous version of your machine. I've ben using it for a solid 10 years now multiple times per day. About a year ago I stated to get intermittent solenoid buzzing when i hit my brew button. although it always eventually kicks in and works fine (seems to really hate the cleaning cycle as well) . Recently the buzzing has gotten more regular and can last longer, although it still hasn't fully failed still brews decent shots. Given your experience with the machine do you think its worth replacing the solenoid on mine, or are there other issues on my doorstep given its age. I recently needed to replace the silicone gasket for the water tank. I'm in Canada and it looks like I would need to spend about 125 on the full solenoid assembly and I'm just not sure its worth it.

I had trouble with my pressure gauge not going up and the pump would work inconsistent. I took my breville espresso apart and cleaned all solenoids and hoses and nothing seems to work, any advice?
Does the pump turn on and run? Do you hard the solenoid valves clicking on and off? Is any water flowing anywhere, like to the hot water dispenser or the drip tray? Could be the inlet water filter is clogged. See my video on the water flow in the machine and try to trace the water from the tank to wherever it's going or not going.
Breville Barista 1870 years old. No longer allows for programming of coffee and grinding of bean size, only works if manually stopped, currently experiences new issues with extracting the coffee. What could be the reason for us experiencing these issues, the machine is only 4 years old.
No expert on that issue, but common factor of all those features is the main controller board (PCB), so that would be a good place to start. Try unplugging the machine for a while and see if that resets it. Also try resetting the brew amounts to the factory default, consult owner's manual. If not, contact Breville support and see if they have any other troubleshooting ideas. PCB can be replaced if needed. Other causes might be the water flow sensor (see video on the 870 water flow in this channel) that can affect brew quantity. Bean setting is just a timer function, there's no sensor involved other than the setting on the dial.
In case it's of interest, I took the power supply / controller board (RPBBV187000) apart, some of the electrolytic capacitors are Teapo, a pretty cheap brand...
Great information, thanks for posting. I've not removed that main PCB yet to have a look. Yes, low cost electrolytic caps are a potential source of problems when they start to dry out.
Before you rush out and buy solenoids take them out (they are a one piece unit and only 2 screws to remove it after disconnecting the hoses and wires) and inspect the tube/hose sockets. I found a broken o ring in one of the hose sockets and a piece of the o ring was lodged in the hole blocking the water flow. Surprise! Its best to pry out all the o rings and make sure they are all in one piece. Also check the hose sockets to where the hoses plug in on the other end of the hoses. Bottom line is if an o ring is broken or dislodged it can block the water flow causing the same symptoms as shown in this video. Anyone want to buy a spare solenoid set for a barista express?

That's also why I prefer to insert the o-ring into the fitting first and then push the tubing into the o-ring and fitting than putting the o-ring on the end of the tubing and pushing that into the fitting.
Thanks for all the detailed videos - exactly what I needed! Unfortunately I can't find the parts available anywhere in Canada and even US/overseas - seems to be a global shortage of coffee machine parts according to a local repair shop I contacted. I might be able to purchase the 2-way OLAB solenoid and the CEME 3-way solenoid separately; the issue is the OLAB have a metal base that isn't compatible with the CEME without valve modifications. Do you think it is possible to simply re-use the existing OLAB armature and take off the OLAB 9200H solenoid and put the CEME 3-way on the armature? Hope this makes sense!
There seems to be a lot of similarity in these sorts of parts among different mfgs. and I suspect that the coils can swap between different makes. Reason being is they all use the same thread size and thus the same diameters on the tubes that the coils fit over. They make coils of different voltages for different applications, 24V, 120V, 240V, etc. and the coil is often the only difference between a 120V and a 240V valve for example.

In the end I got a replacement from big warehouse spares in Sydney that arrived in two days and was easy to install following this video. The machine is running great again.

Such a helpful video, R Brown! I wanted to share my "WHAAAT?!?!" moment from when was trying to get the back panel off of my BES870XL, as it might help others. Mine might be an older model because on the back of the unit instead of the five screws up top and three (with plugs) on the water reservoir level (as you discuss at the about the 1:50 mark in your video), my unit had five up top, two on the bottom of the unit, and three clips on each side. Confusingly, Breville put a screwhole/plug in the center position (right next to the water reservoir bracket, like your model) but it's a dummy: there isn't a screw down at the bottom of the four inch recessed hole. It took me about 45 minutes of not-so-nice language and confusion to figure that out! Eventually I was able to find the right screws to remove the back panel. The insides are exactly the same as in your video, so everything else went perfectly. Anyways, it's up and running now, and it now operates so quielty and smoothly that my only regret is that I'd repaired it sooner. Happy espresso time, everyone!

I have the BES870XL as well. I found the two screws on the bottom, but can’t figure out how to remove the back plate. I managed to pop out the clips, but the panel still seems attached at the bottom and I don’t want to break it /: did you find anything else that needs to be removed?
@@mllecoeurdelion It's been a while, but I honestly don't recall that there were any other screws on my model to remove other than described, and also the clips. I hope you were able to remove the back plate!

Hi Sir. I have the BES 860 XL and like your machine the original solenoids are OLAB instead of CEME. I did the order and receive the CEME and after the installation the 3 way solenoide was not activating. I noticed a difference of TF in the specifications. The OLAB TF is 135 vs CEME TF 145. Can be that the main reason to avoid the activation toward the group head ?
I think the TF specification is the "fluid temperature", so that should not be an issue. The water temperature will be around 100C. It may be you have a bad connection or broken wire on that solenoid if both the old and new solenoids were not actuating. You can test the solenoid:

Or you could hook up something like an indicator or test light or a volt meter to the solenoid wire and see if it's getting power:

If all is well with the solenoid and you are not getting power to it, the main circuit board for the machine may be defective and need to be replaced.

Is the solenoid the same for 2 way or 3 way valve?
In your video, the CEME solenoid of 2 way valve has different Vxxxxx...number from the solenoid of 3 way valve.
As far as I know, they seem to be the same, as in the plastic solenoid coil. I didn't disassemble the Ceme solenoids but they both had the same VA rating. On the Olab version, they are identical. All the coils do is create a magnetic field that pulls the iron slug inside the valve up. Same thing in the 2 or 3 way valve, just in the 2 way, it only opens the bottom port. In the 3 way valve, it opens the bottom and simultaneously closes the top port. I think Ceme must add the valve p/n onto the coil, while Olab has the coils marked with the coil p/n.

I'm sure my solenoids do need replacing, but for now...the pressure is not an issue. The machine keeps switching off randomly. Having stripped the machine, cleaned it thoroughly and removed any potential blockages, I'm thinking that the the on/off switch may be worn. Any suggestions here?
The switches on these machines are more of a soft switch. They just send signals to the main circuit board that controls the machine. Might check out this page for some troubleshooting ideas:

It's for an earlier model but apparently all the 800 series machines are quite similar. Likely guess is a loose connection some place or something like a faulty capacitor or similar part.

I had already ordered and received the new Ceme solenoids and put those in directly so I could get the machine back working. The new valves seem to be a better design than the older Olab parts. No coffee in the valves but the 3-port valve was a bit gummed up with something, maybe hard water deposits. I'm keeping those valves, now cleaned, as a working replacement.
Hi there, I am trying to repair my BES870, it has one of those plastic solenoid assemblies rather than the metal one like you use in your cleaning video. Is it still possible to pull them apart and descale/clean them? My machine has no water at the group head and no pressure. steam wand works fine, hot water works but not great.
I never tore my new Ceme/plastic valves apart before I installed them. Not sure it they can be taken apart or not. Maybe another viewer can chime in if they have done so.
@@The4Crawler I did manage to pull them apart in the end. Undid the bolt at the top and battled the circlips off and they popped open. In the end, my issue (no water at the group head) was a blocked water dispenser. I noticed when I pulled the tube that ran to the water dispenser/group head out that the o-ring was filthy, so I used a straw brush to scrub that out and I got a small flow of water before it stopped again.. so did it again more thoroughly and it started flowing from the group head. I have a working machine again! Thank you for your videos, they were really helpful!
@@edmz1234 Good to know those valves are serviceable. I guess the circlips are more suited for the Ceme plastic housing than the threaded parts on the Olab brass valves.
Thanks, Mr. Brown! I had the same problem, however, the steamer and hot water was working fine. Now that I replaced the solenoid block, my initial problem is fixed (making good shots) but the steamer and hot water is no longer working. Could there be any other possible issues other than the solenoid? I would appreciate any input.
Perhaps the hoses were not reconnected properly after the solenoid replacement? By default the hot water/steam feature works off the normally open port of the 3-way solenoid:

So unless that port is blocked or the solenoid is stuck fully open, I would check the plumbing inside.
Mr. Brown, thanks again 🙏🏾. I have checked the hoses for proper connectivity, the problem remained. I then swapped the new 3 way solenoid coil with that of the old OEM one then reverted back to the original problem 🤣. I now have the seamer and hot water working well, but no espresso shots (I.e., no pressure or water coming at all). I am thinking the problem could be elsewhere... any thoughts?
BTW, prior to the problem - failing to make espresso shots, there were numerous occurrences of power tripping when I tried/pushed to make espresso shots.
@@himbol7531 See if you can open up the 3/2 way solenoid and see if it's plugged inside on the upper port as that's the one that hot water/steam flows out of. The other test would be to try blowing in the lower right side port and feel for air coming out the top port with no power connected to the solenoid. That's the normal flow direction with the solenoid not energized.
Thank you so much for this video! We waited patiently for a replacement three way valve and replaced it just now. Our original problem of no water down the group head is fixed, but now the steam/hot water come out of the group head instead of the wand. I flipped back to the old three way valve and now the wand works but no water down the head group.
I read through the comments and noted the gentleman who mentioned unplugging the upper blue wire from the solenoid - that worked but as soon as the plug went back on, the water/steam started coming back out of the group head instead of the wand. Any idea on what to do to try and fix the machine?! Thank you in advance!
Water flows to the ground head when the 3-way solenoid is powered. It flows to the hot water valve when it's not powered. This video explains the water flow in the machine:

Check the new valve you got, unpowered you should be able to blow air into the right side port, where the right angle fitting would be. Air should come out the top port with no power applied. Also, compare the printing on the solenoid coil between the 2 valves and see if they are similar rating for voltage.
You might also try cleaning the old valve, that's likely why it's not opening fully to send hot water to the group head:

@@tonyjarjoura4343 Yes, a toggle switch would do the job for an inexpensive repair. Otherwise, it could be something like a bad component on the circuit board that's sending AC power to the solenoid all the time. It's supposed to only get power during an espresso cycle.
Hey mate, did you ever get a chance to pull apart, see if it was salvageable? Just about to do this on mine after running descaler and now getting no flow!
I did go through and clean the inside of the valves and I think they're fully operational now. But since I have the new valve block installed and that's working great, I don't want to tear the machine apart to test the old valves.

and see if you can find out where it's going. Maybe some tubes are hooked up the the wrong places or a valve is stuck open or closed or the over pressure valve is passing water to the drip tray, etc. Pop open the back of the machine and peek inside while running a cycle. Be careful as there are live electrical connections inside. Usually you can see where the water is flowing.

I went a bit rash, just bought a new BES870 instead as to be fair, I inherited this 870 from mum a couple of years back and they got it from someone else... who knows the history of it! Getting the local repair agent to check it over, confirm the fault and I'll either fix it myself or get them to fix it and either use the machine at work or sell it on to offset the newy! Your videos have provided a lot of extra info where I had doubts, so this is great. Cheers again!
R brown would you know someplace where I can purchase a non pressurized 54mm double shot basket? Breville is sold out and most breville parts stores are out too. I tried a non oem one from Amazon, no good did not work, zero pressure, it had a bigger circumference, even though it fit my machine, luckily I did not damage my unit. If anyone has information where to source an original breville 54mm basket I would appreciate it.
I haven't looked for that part myself. Probably keep checking with Breville, lots of parts shortages these days with the current situation going on. I've run into random parts shortages with my business the last 6 months.
Not sure when you say the filter basket you tried had no pressure. In the non-pressurized, single wall filter basket, all the pressure is generated by the restriction to the flow of water of the packed coffee grounds. Maybe try a finer grind setting, make sure the basket is properly tamped and filled to the proper level:

@@The4Crawler i was using a nonpressurized basket from Amazon, a knockoff. It didn't work, no pressure at all, when I checked circumference its was bigger than original so it did not lock in like it should, all pressure gone. Went back to my original oem filters and pressure came right back. Amazon filter is junk dont buy.

Had same problem. Wasn’t pick up pressure and noising. Replaced same parts and still have not pressure. Did a test with covering in plastic for “clean me” rubber stuff and it raised pressure this way. When did it with coffee, then it not raising pressure. Any suggestions what can be? Thank you.
Is this with the single or double wall filter basket? If using the double wall basket, it may be the coffee grind is too coarse or not packed firm enough. Or try the single wall basket, it'll create some pressure drop regardless of how the coffee is ground. Might also be the pump not putting out enough volume/pressure, if those other things don't help. I have a video in this playlist on replacing the pump. That helped my low pressure issue.
R Brown R Brown just look over and did descaling. Never done it in 4,5 years. Always was using water from store and wasn’t use machine for around 6 month due to moving and after turn it on it starts buzzing and then change solenoid and it wasn’t pick up pressure. After descale process, pressure start rising again and machine works like new.
@@isane4ek87 Glad you got it working again. I imagine with good purified water, the machine may go a long time between descaling cycles. Water may have started to dry out during those 6 months and led to some excess build-up.

Hello and thank you for your time making these videos. I bought same unit knowing that “steamer and extractor not working”. Brought it home, performed clean cycle with tablets and vinegar 10 times or so. Steamer started to work just fine. When I run coffee thru it-won’t give any pressure(just a few hair thin movements) but when I leave cleaning rubber “plate” inside the portafilter and run “double shot” through it-gives me beautiful 11-12am pressure on a gauge. Could you please direct me what’s need to be changed?
Are you using the single or double wall filter baskets? The double wall will give you some pressure, regardless of the coffee grind and compaction. It won't be high but it should register on the gauge. With the single wall baskets, you need to dial in the grind and compaction of the coffee to get the desired pressure. Finer grind setting and higher compaction will generally raise the pressure. See the videos in this playlist for explanations of the filter baskets and grinder settings.
I’m using single wall, played with the grind all the way from 15 until 3 and still no pressure. Pack coffee hard and using measuring plate.
@@romeoivanovcom You might try the double wall filter and see if that does anything different. It has the built in orifice to create a pressure drop. With adjusting the grinder, it does take a few baskets of grinding to see the change come through unless you go in and clean out the inner passages each time. You're shooting for the texture of regular table salt.

Thanks for the video, needed help in getting the machine apart so i could look into a leak, so infuriating though because I still can't find it. My machine works fine except that it leaks a ton with every cup, took the machine apart, and as far as I can tell, it looks like new inside, not a drop of water or moisture inside the machine, and yet every cup of coffee I make uses 1L of water and spills it all over the counter, resorted to this because the price went up with covid and everyone buying up the machines so i had hoped that i could fix it but it's beyond me, Thanks for the informative video anyway.
I assume the water is leaking out into the drip tray6 and overflowing there onto the counter? If so, that's a sign that the 3-port solenoid valve is not fully closing off the upper port that send water to the hot water/steam valve where it runs down to the drip tray:

@@The4Crawler That Video has really helped me understand the machine more thanks I appreciate it a lot, I think I have it figured out, The drip tray isn't full but the leak is coming from the diffuser area of the machine, I think that the hose that outlets into the drip tray has somehow been pushed up or the diffuser outlet pulled out and the water is instead going to the cavity above the drip tray and is coming out the side of the machine

Great video with clear explanation ! I had the buzzing issue and no water was coming out. After I opened back of machine I noticed there is (lime)scale on the body of 2/3 way solenoid valve. I guess there was a leakage and it damaged the solenoid. I only changed the OLAB 2/3 way solenoid instead of changing whole block and it fixed the problem. Thanks for sharing your video !!!
Yes, solenoid coil damage is somewhat common and easier to repair than replacing the whole valve.
@@The4Crawler Oh well I got a new problem ! :) So I changed the solenoid valve and all was well for couple of weeks. Then, there was a leak inside the machine .... I was happy to know the solution. I changed the solenoid valve. This time I have a new problem, the group head is leaking hot water and when I try to use the steam, nothing gets out of wand. Instead steam gets out of group head. I have tried another brand new solenoid block and another brand new solenoid. But still I have the same problem. I am hoping you have a solution for me :)

Either the hot water/steam valve is clogged (inside) or the tubing is plugged or the solenoid, while new, may not be fully closing and sending water to that valve or a combination of those things. For hot water to get to the group head, the 3-port solenoid has to be open, which seals off the passage to the hot water valve. If everything else checks out, it may be that the main circuit board is sending AC voltage to that solenoid all the time. Try unplugging that solenoid and then test the hot water. If it works normally, then it may be the circuit board:

That's the 3 port solenoid valve most likely. Make sure it's plugged in well. You can test it out as follows:

You could try swapping the solenoid coils around between your old and new solenoids. The coils are all the same, but maybe one is weak. Or it might be something inside the 3 port valve causing it not to open fully:

Maybe the main circuit board is bad and unable to supply enough power to the solenoid coils.

Yes, it could be the pump although the pump sound when working or not working is about the same, maybe a bit more muted when the output pressure is low. The solenoids make a nice sharp click when they work and a loud buzzing when then don't.

Hi Sir, my barista express is.working fine for 1 year. Today tried to pull a shot but only hot steam comes out of the group head and hot water outlet. There is no steady flow of water coming out but just strong hot steam. Do you have any idea whats happening? The machine is also very hot to the touch at its top. Please help!
Might try contacting Breville support since the machine is fairly new and may still be under warrantee. It could be the temperature sensor on the thermo-coil has gone bad and it's getting too hot. Other thing to try is resetting the water temperature back to factory default (see the user manual for instructions).
