He's the only Joker that has actually made me laugh, don't get me wrong I was always a fan of the character and Mark Hamil's voice is legendary but watching Jack Nicholson as Joker was the first and so far only time I caught myself thinking "Wait a minute, this guy is actually pretty funny 😂"
@thorbat I think Jack is funny in virtually everything he's done, even in some of his darker roles ( Cuckoo's Nest and the Shining ), he still carries that humorous demeanor, simply because he's Jack 😆
In terms of visual appearance, performance and mannerisms- absolutely. That said killing the Wayne’s is a big divergence from the comics. Ledger got that Killing Joke “one bad day multiple choice origin” down right along with the dynamic with Batman and Joker
I absolutely love how Nicholson had different laughs for Joker. Especially in this clip, his reserved laughter is almost way more unsettling than his big laughs later in the movie.
The slow build of this scene was brilliant. From the time that Nicholsen entered the room, still cloaked in shadow, he was still Jack Napier. You hear the anger, the rage, the sense of betrayal in his voice. When he comes into the light, all of that fades away. Napier's character is completely overwritten by the maniacal lunacy that is The Joker. They just don't make movies like this anymore.
That acting coach video assessing Batman villains really elevated this scene for me: "When you have defeated somebody that has been keeping you down, you celebrate, and Jack celebrates here. But the thing that I love about what he's bringing here is the liberating madness. This is something that, believe it or not, adds humanity to the character. We all wish that we could just go mad, and say or do whatever we want. This Joker sets the bar for anybody that wants to play Joker from this point on."

Yeah, then fewer people nowadays would think Joker is just wearing makeup because of the Heath and Joaquin versions, even when they watch him putting human makeup over it. Though I will say that while I knew Joker wasn't wearing clown makeup, I didn't realize until much later that Nicholson actually was wearing that second "human" layer over it in the scenes after his transformation; when Joker wiped his human makeup off, I thought it was an illusion done by Nicholson by wiping white makeup on.

I know I will always love Joaquin phoenix’s Joker of how society is nowadays being very relatable but jack Nicholson’s joker had a special charm to it similar to the Batman animated series and this movie was made before it.
One of the BEST scenes in this entire movie! And one of Nicholson's best moments! His crazed laughter as he playfully shoots the guy dead is what sells it.
I remember the first time I saw the Joker reveal. A friend of mine had the movie on VHS and we watched it. The lighting was so low that you couldn't even see Jokers face, he was a full silhouette. It was only until just before the big reveal that I saw the smallest hint of his face, then he stepped out of the shadow.

I think Nicholson was the best Joker, had the best look (IMO), he was creepy but funny, he is a clown after all, he had a large variety of deadly gadgets and with Nicholson killing Batman's parents in this version, gives Batman's hatred for The Joker more weight, also his death was satisfying and I loved the "You wouldn't hit a guy with glasses would ya'?" bit, cracks me up.
I heard that before Nicholson was cast as joker that robin williams willem dafoe (that would of been a good one) Tim Curry (he ended up playing a clown anyway) even robin williams auditioned. Nicholson played this role to PERFECTION

The acting in old movies is so corny in my opinion. The angry reaction of "Your life won't be worth spit!" after Jack pointed his gun, then "Jack, listen, maybe we can cut a deal" none of it is convincing, feels very rehearsed and forced. I will say though, that the way they used light and shadows to build suspense for Joker's face was quite genius and uncanny. The music was really good too!

I don't know, Health Ledger actually is better in my opinion, don't get me wrong I love Jack Nicolson it just Health Ledger Joker is for my taste

It took me awhile to appreciate Jack's Joker but I see now how legendary his performance really is.
