Do we finally have an iPad DAW that can replace our computers?

I have been wanting to review the Logic Pro app for iOS for a while, and after spending a few months with it, I must say I am fairly impressed with it. This is as close to a full fledged DAW we get on mobile devices, and it might prove itself to be very useful for music producers on the go.

Thanks very much. I just got this app and a new ipad to run it and i was getting upset there was no volume envelope avail. But here you explained it , its an automation. Thats new for me coming from ACID PRO. I will checking out your content. Great video!

I use Logic Pro on iPad. It works great, and it has an amazing built in tutorial.
However my biggest gripe is IO connectivity to my outboard. I’d like to connect it to my 18i20 interface and MRCC midi interface.
I must keep it on a dongle which is currently a 1x input 16x midi channel dongle interface. Editing in desktop mode is not very ergonomic and can become tiring (at least with my current setup; where I have a low keyboard tray my midi keyboard above that, with iPad behind midi keyboard), there are so many micro tasks that are done a lot faster with keyboard + mouse.
I like to lounge or lay down with iPad, which is great for a more relaxed creative mood for editing. But you must disconnect outboard to do this.
I would love for Apple to create a WiFi paired audio+midi+usb hub so that we can freely utilize free roaming with iPad while working on DAW.
The app is not 100% stable. I’d have crashed it a few times / though it usually only crashed while stress testing it.
Logic Pro for iPad is not capable of doing Orchestral type projects (80+ tracks with 50+gb of samples).
It may crash if playing chords on 128th note arpeggios on one or more tracks. It may crash if using midi effects exceeds polyphonic limit. It may crash if using too many reverbs and effects.
One thing I do appreciate is when it does crash, recovery takes less than a minute and it gives you an option to recover last saved or last back-up before crash.
In mean time, I will stick with Mouse + Keyboard.
And lastly is battery, I currently can’t charge AND dongle my iPad at same time so I’m looking for a solution to that.

Oooh, I would switch to the iPad Pro M4 then. I mean .. The only reason I still carry a laptop around is because I need it for Reaper in my garden studio shack. :) .. and Reaper > everything.

I’ve used ableton for a long time over 12 years but it’s just more chill and easy work on iPad I use FL studio but the drums never sound good, Lofi and small and very digital sounding. Ableton drums I can make so realistic that my friends don’t know if it’s a real drummer or digital. Wish iPad had good drum sound options. I’ll buy any app but never will do a subscription

I just got the push 3 standalone 😂, so will work with that as my “portable “ daw for now, but man , wish Ableton will release a iPad app beyond their Note app, that connects with push.

I Am just getting in to using my Ipad for som simple beats and backin tracks for my piano training etc. Dont know what daw to use, but I have used Garageband & some Logic as well for long tima ago. Have you used Garageband, and what do you think of it?

Logic Pro iPad has a really nice built in tutorial section just for Garage Band users in its help menu. :)

Awesome vid ; as a lover of the op1 myself can I ask about the delay of your Bluetooth keyboard and what brand is it ?
Edit I just read the description … I ve got one more question. Do you use monitor or just like air pod and do you have latency ?

Hi! Thank you for watching and commenting! So the latency for the keyboard is very low, unnoticeable really. Since it is just sending MIDI, it sends less data which results in less delay. When monitoring with Bluetooth audio, there will be too much latency, so I never use Bluetooth for that. In the beginning of the video, I just monitored using the iPad speakers, and after that I monitored throught the audio interface. However, if I don't feel like using an audio interface and I'm not planning on recording audio, I'll just use usb-c headphones (like these amzn.to/3YTKF7q )
