I can clear this up for us. There is a wise saying that "the only way to keep a woman is barefoot and pregnant." You keep her barefoot so she can't run off. You keep her pregnant so that no one else wants her. The relationships that stand the test of time are like that....ALWAYS. She's some poor woman who'd like to leave but can't afford to, and she's got so many kids that no one else wants to rescue her. In summary, your relationships don't work, because they can't work. She's either got her eye on some other fella, or some other fella's got his eye on her. That's the cold, hard truth.
One of the best songs, written. Period. Phenomenal vocals, harmonious unity, smooth pace, pitch, power, unbelievable to the ear, the feeling of joyous music, you are just obligated to enjoy and sing along. Just perfect. Period. - Paul.
PeterClarke3990, ...oh my, to have been there!! Son!, just phenomenal indeed. I've seen the Doobie Brothers, 3 separate times, but all post Michael Mcdonald. Not better, or worse, but still great harmonious joy, lyrics, unity, etc. So very good indeed, my friend.
I will Peter, you as well. Have a good weekend, get rest, enjoy your family, tell you loved ones, they are loved, valued, and appreciated, what they mean to you. - Paul.
if you didn’t know, just the keyboard part Michael is playing is very difficult by itself. the fact that he can sing over it is amazing, and the level he is singing at is as one of the greatest vocalists of all time. truly amazing
i've tried it! it was quite a challenge... the singing part with the high voice was really hard. it's amazing how relaxed he is while performing such a complex song
I've always been baffled by singing bass players (not to discount keyboardists). For me it's like walking and chewing gum. Laying down the groove AND throwing a melody on top. True talent!
Second keys were handled by Cornelius Bumpus who was a recording and touring member of the Doobies from 79-82. (Vocals, keys, sax.) They 2nd keyboard setup was usually a chopped Hammond B3 with an ARP String Ensemble perched on top.
I hate to single out one person. This performance was amazing. Just have to say that Rosemary Butler just stands out and can hold her own on a stage of tremendous talent. I saw her with Jackson Browne during the Running on empty tour.
I watch this just to see and listen to Rosemary Butler! What an absolutely stunningly beautiful girl with an equally stunning voice. And that smile! Made my legs go weak! Songs not bad either!
God I just love this song. Lot of truth to the lyrics if you listen to them. Have sung along with it so many times. That wry little glance to the girl singing along at 3.25 and that smile is precious. Michael Macdonald at 72 is still the sweet gracious man he was when he was younger. The Doobies have been making music for over 50 years. I am not looking forward to the day when they cease to make music...
Incredible live performance. Producer wiz Ted Tempelman second drummer here. Played drums for a local band the Tiki's who turned into Harpers Bizarre. "Feeling Groovy" in the 60's...
Teddy Swims, Hozier, John Legend, Gregory Porter, James Morrison, just to name a very few that come immediately to my mind. I am old enough to have bought the triple LP of No Nukes and I still remember the first time I listened to the brilliant live version of "Power", with James Taylor killing it. But man, there are still great artists out there. You just have to open your ears a bit.
Right up there with Wichita Lineman as a contender for the greatest song ever written. And, the lyric: "As he rises to her apology, anybody else would surely know He's watching her go." Is savage. Cuts like a heartbreak. I've listened a thousand times, and I hope to live long enough to listen a thousand more.
As soon as it was released, this hit exploded on Brazilian radio stations, I was only 9 years old and I got used to appreciating the rise of Mr.McDonald in his beautiful musical trajectory
One day you will understand music...you hear everybody in the band work 24/7 to fill in. It's the bass who not play in those open few spaces that keep this song alive. It's like a breath to the fire. He's the boss
I was 14 in 1979. Monticello's Pizza in Champagne Illinois, Market Place Mall where they had a video game arcade. This song played nonstop and we loved it.
The AMAZING Rosemary Butler on backing vocals! If anyone doesn't know, Rosemary played bass and sang in a female rock group called Birtha in the early 70s.
MM points at his mic 00:00:24 to let the monitor engineer he wants more of his vocal in his monitor. This is the best live rendition of this song I have seen on youtube.
Anybody else just casually watching this... then realising that lady is totally in love with MM and he's loving every minute of it, then realising how much his wife looks like her.
@johnnyholland8765,the woman that he is smiling at, and singing with is his now wife, Amy Holland, who he produced the song,"How Will I Survive". They are still together living in Santa Barbara, Ca. Isn't that even cooler
Thanks a bunch for going through all the tech hassles to bring this out to TH-cam... You did an outstanding job and it was very true to the original source. The other keyboard position I'm not sure but I know that Cornelius Bumpus did a great job playing sax and keyboards and contributing vocals.. just an idea.. thanks again
Peak. And this is my favorite version overall because of Skunk's solo. I am sampling it for a rap song. Michael often surprises you with his twists on the melody. It's funny, I just heard the incredible "Open My Eyes" by the Nazz, and I can't help noticing how clean and clear this is. It's been my favorite 'old song' for over a year now!
@@cecilDisharoon Yep, that's Simmons, not Baxter (he left the Doobies earlier the year of this concert). One tip-off, is lack of eyeglasses. I've never seen an image of Skunk without what I assume are prescription eyewear.

The lovely Rosemary Butler on backing vocals.
She looks familiar...sure enough, Jackson Browne "Running on Empty"!!
yea, that was incredible....i was just wondering who the heck that was
I had a sweetheart that looks like her; that lovely blonde curly hair, deep blue eyes and that little girl smile simply captivating ❤ that’s so Gina
She sang with James Taylor in the 80s.

"She had a place in his life, he never made her think twice" may just be the saddest line in music. Certainly top 5 .
"if love can come and love can go, then why can't love return once more?"
"What seems to be is always better than nothing."

Joyful performance.
She is an angel.
She's cute. I want to enter her.

Great info. Playing all the keyboard parts of this song and singing at the same time is a impossible task, there's always a shadow musician there...😅
is that instrumental harmonies i can hear in the ‘she had a place in his life’ or is that a guitar ?
@@chemsilva yes but Michael is playing the much harder part while singing it, it’s amazing. Cornelius is playing the very simple string part

This song reminds me of good times, boy do I miss the 70's and 80's!

Eu era criança nessa época, meu irmão tinha um carro com toca fitas e ouvíamos muito essa música.❤

I was at this show. 20 years old, sat behind the stage. incredible.
I could listen about that for an hour at least
Wow. Just wow. Must have been incredible.
wow, what a live version.. Band and his singing is just spot on..
For real! His voice is stronger and brighter than any other live version I’ve heard

My god.. this is the best live version I have ever heard..got goosebumps..
Indeed. It's so immaculate I kept suspecting its the studio version audio in part (except the end) superimposed on the video...
Live version is amazing. 👍🎹🎤
Man, what a sound machine. A lot of things have to be going right to sound like that
Michael McDonald looked so amazingly cool here, but then his hair went silver a few years later and he looked even more badass....
The suit and Hawaiian shirt combo, the salt and pepper hair and beard… badass look
If you asked a Genie to make you the coolest guy on Earth he wouldn't be powerful enough to make you this cool
I’m not sure ‘badass’ is the right word here. …’like colonel Sanders.’ Is more fitting.
He ruined the Doobie brothers.......they used to be a guitar band........

I cry every time I hear this. It is so evocative of lost (or never realized) love.

The most painful thing is when a woman rises to her apology. It's worse than an outright slap in the face.
Michael's voice is so smooth and distinctive. Such a versatile musician.

The great Rosemary Butler helping out on that night with her superb backing vocals and Ted Templeman on drums just as on the album version!
I thought that looked like Templeman
Rosie did backing vocals with Arnold McCuller at James Taylor's Boston concert. Lord, that girl can sing!
Thanks - wondering who it was
Man, I miss those days so much.
When was the last time we saw talent like this. McDonald had a killer deep manly voice. You NEVER hear that anymore.

A sidekick; Rosemary Butler was even Jackson Brownes favorite singer. And she was phenomenal! That voice!❤❤❤
You definitely hear Rosemary's voice when the backing vocals kick in and yet her voices blends in so very well.
As much as I loved the DBrothers music, I wouldn’t be able to take my eyes off Rosemary Butler. Absolutely gorgeous woman!
