Crazy thing is I always thought that was all synth. Finding out it’s an actual bass blew my mind!
Mark King is an absolute monster on the bass guitar still to this day
Mark's bass playing is impressive! September 2024 anyone?
Yo!
Unreal. Just stumbled on this by accident, the sound quality is just out of this world! Nasty bass player!
No easy feat indeed playing bass and singing like that especially with those 30 pound Alembic basses, damn he makes that thing sound great!
AWESOME bass player!🎸 how about listening since this came out on the radio📻 still over almost 4 decades, also impressive
ZERO autotunes, zero melodyne, zero iPhones, zero bullshit, JUST GREAT MUSIC and atmosphere enjoyed by everyone. I wanna go back to the 80’s.
me too.
But obviously prerecorded tracks like the synth in the intro at 0:12 either sequenced or more probable played back from a mini disc.
Amen brother!
Right on!!!!!!!!!❤
WELL STATED. You said what I was thinking. These days everything is garbage. Modern times doesn't hold a candle to the 80s or the 90s
There is something you about you that keeps me back to the 80's ❤ Still listening in 2024 😊
@kimberlyfinch6055 God Bless U Too Then
I love this!! Kimberly!
One of the best songs from the 1980's, and seeing Mark King snap and pop that bass with all those cool lines while singing... as others here have noted, it's not an easy feat at all. And he pulls it off so effortlessly. I remember when this was a hit. The sun shined a lot brighter back then.
This is a super cool song about the complexity of love.
great song defo, terrible lead guitar though.
Absolutely agree one of my best too! Love the 80 my best moments! ❤️
One of the best songs of the ever
Brilliant alwyas loved this
The 80's were the greatest decade of the millennium! Real musicians, real instruments, real class, real Good! Wish I could go back!
Amen
The UK brought it hard in the '80s
damn skippy it did
They truly did!
Absolutely! LEvel 42, The Police, Eurhythmics, etc.
Then Bad poetry with a beat (Rap Crap) happenned..
Dude is whaling on that bass and singing incredibly well....insane talent
Yes, amazing. That is by no means an easy bass line to sing over. But he makes it look so easy.
Mark King
Hes Mark King, the guy is so underrated
Mark and Noel Redding, 2 of the Worlds best Bassists.
Insane right?
Loved it then, still listening today 12/21/2023. Great #classic track here and thanks for sharing, posting @Level42 Almost 2024, anyone else listening too?🔥
No autotune just pure talent!!!
Is anyone else here to relive the 80's?
Nah, just really big Mark King fan. I do miss the 80’s though 😢
I time traveled from 1985 to comment 'yes' in 2024
The lead vocalist and bassist is truly talented. No one really knows just how hard it is to play an instrument and sing a different melody simultaneously. The guy is truly a badass.
Do know. More manageable than you might think.
Just like Sting with the Police...killing it on bass and incredible singing!
He is one of the best bassists ever....great musician.
The whole band is amazing....every one of these guys is incredible.
Playi g bass and singing lead is a bloody nightmare..I’m still struggling
@@bloodandashes75 it sure is.
Back when pop music had real musicians...
Taylor Swift is everything wrong with the world. Talentless and can’t do much of anything but make every 13 year old girl fish-hook daddies wallet
True so so true
@@jeffsparey9585 Damn right !
Or musicians. Plain musicians. Real musicians being a luxury. The 80's am I right?
Yup! 'member dat?😎
A song from my youth. The 80s were truly the best.
Agreed! GenX
Impossible to slap
like that on keyboard
Everything about this is pure perfection
Sound of my youth.
Being in your 20's in the 1980's was simply the best time to be young and alive
Fuckin' A!
being a teen wasn't so bad either. this was the year i turned 16.
Amen to that!🍻
I was a teen and it was pretty damn good
❤❤❤❤FEEL SO BLESSED FOR HAVING LIVED THOSE YEARS. I WAS FINISHING SCHOOL AND STARTING UNIVERSITY BY 1989, SO I COULD REALLY ENJOY THE BEST MUSIC EVER EITHER IN ENGLISH AND SPANISH ❤❤‼️
TODAY I'M REACHING 51 AND I STILL FEEL BLESSED FOR THAT AMAZING MUSIC. WE DEFINITELY WERE LUCKY FRIENDS, REALLY LUCKY❤❤❤‼️
BLESSINGS FROM BARRANQUILLA, COLOMBIA 🇨🇴💖👍‼️
I won tickets from a radio station in Chicago for the Madonna concert, the only reason I went was L42 was the opening act. One of the best sound of the 80’s.
Good reason 👌🏽
...I BOUGHT tix to that same tour because Level 42 was opening...
I went to Walmart this morning and heard this song. I thought "wasn't this band Level 42"? Came home and sure enough. The ironic part is that I just turned 42 this morning.
...A Very Most Deliciously Musical, Happy Belated Birthday... Level 42 Style!!!
LONG LIVE MUSICAL JOURNEYS!!!♥️🎉🤘🎶
@@alejandronovela3280 Thanks!
Hope you played the lottery 🎉
So YOU'VE reached Level 42? Well done
When you were born I was spinning the 12 inch remixes of this song in da clubs.
When the artist sounds like the radio version while on stage...
Outstanding!
Damb Straight on that, Level 42 Baby......
It's amazing isn't it
That and also they probably wanted the album to capture the "live" performance
Shows how amazing they were. Hit it perfectly
Hating them is a meme but Nickleback also sounded near identical to the studio albums; was a great concert. Hinder, Papa Roach and Saving Able were also great on that ticket. Pretty good first concert.
Today october 18 2023, 38 years ago and still sound great this song
Level 42 are incredible, and Mark king is from another planet.
I have played bass for over 30 years, and I cannot begin to tell you how difficult it is to play and sing at the same time, let alone playing the way Mark King is and singing a slower melody line.
Outstanding talent.
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
You are so right! Watching him do this is otherworldly, singing one harmony, and playing another simultaneously, simply the best!
There's something about him.

Mark King is an amazing bassist AND a great singer AND a great songwriter. Triple whammy.
And a really likeable , and decent bloke ❤
I think people forget the incredible musicianship of a lot of the synth-pop hits of the 80s. The arrangements are impressive. A lot going on there.
One of the best songs of the decade!
Of the decade and in general. In my top 10 songs ever. Love these guys.
Agree
1985 was an all-round good time for TV, Music and Movies.
One of the best songs period
Always was my favorite in my 53 years of living!
There's something about this song 🤩🤩🤩😍😍🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
I remember buying this cassette back in about '86. Couldn't get enough. Dude is very talented
One of the most underrated bands at the time but one of the best 👌🏻
Back to a simpler time when music was still performed by true artists.
I saw them at the Ritz in NYC on this tour. Hardly anyone in the place. Unreal! I stood at the foot of the stage looking up at Mark King and was stunned at his ability to sing and play those phenomenal bass lines. The whole band was beyond incredible. The best show I have ever attended.
They were not well known in the USA. I saw them in San Francisco. Thank goodness better attended.
I think I hate you...
@@adc2327 I knew them and I'm from San Francisco. If I knew they was there I would have went. I have a crush on Mark...Since I was a teenager... When I used to party hard I would play this song, and my folks loved this song... They played this video on MTV and VH1 all the time...
LEVEL 42 ......ORO MACIZO🙏👍👍👍🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🇨🇱🇨🇱
Epic!
80s are a bookmark of your life which can never be relived. All good things must come to an end.
Best time ever 🎉🥳🍾
We still have the music!!!!
I know…. I was born in 1970…. And my best times were in the middle to late 70s and of course growing up through the 80s as teenager ! Love your life because it really goes by fast 💨!!!!😊
Love this band! Mark King is a fantastic singer and even better bass player!
The dude plays like a beast, sings, and is literally chewing gum too
Does anyone see my comment? THIS SONG MAKES ME FEEL SO YOUNG!!!!!!!
We see it bro.....🎉
@@draven1844bro .. Im sista!! And thanks for the comment😊
Thanks bro! ❤
Makes me feeling 15 years old))
So fucking great my friend
No backing tracks or auto tune just lots of talent!
I noticed at the beginning of the song the keyboard part of the song is heard but Mike Lindup can be seen but appears not to be playing, I was wondering if they use a second keyboard player when playing live ? I noticed this a on a few Level 42 live tracks but I cant seem to see another keyboard player on stage, they aren’t using in ear monitoring so any augmented tracks would have to be played through the floor monitors. I’m not complaining or taking anthing away from this great live band, just wondering how it’s done.
Live and accomplished. When folks in the charts could actually write and play songs. Excellent!
This was a top 10 hit and it has amazing instrumental parts all through it
a
Are you insinuating that dress wearing wankshaft harry styles doesn't have a modicum of talent 🤣
Right! So true! Late 70’s & 80’s were some real talent! What year was this released?
They sounds just as good as the record ❤ I love mark’s Vocals🔥 fantastic
Life was perfect. I miss the 80's.
That was the best decade of all in my lifetime.
I agree 1000%
@Adam Marshall I must have said something right I’ve had several-replies in agreement with my statement
A very underrated and almost forgotten gem of a song😊
This song was destined to be a classic the moment it was written.
I cried, of happiness, thank you! Growing up in the 80s this is one of my first musical memories
Boy, the years went by in a flash didn't they? No matter, all music is a time machine and we are all back in the eighties....at least for a little bit.....and that's all I need to get me through the day.
Yeah for sure, I was in my early teens when this first came out, now 52 I shake my head how fast time flies but I never for got this song...even back then It grabbed my attention and Instantly loved this song.
My fav song of all time💘
They are so young here, but 100% masters of their craft.
We were all young then, not anymore lol
Hiya. For the benefit of those who aren't English, this band had an uphill struggle during their infancy, because I think they appealed to the Lads and Ladettes community of music lovers. A kind of weekend lager louts culture. Even when drunk, they could still appreciate what a tight and talented outfit Level 42 were. The rest of our country were kind of split into techno, new heavy metal, U2 Goth etc. But Level 42 kinda stood out on their own. And rightly so. Because I still think to this day, the original lineup are unsurpassed, and my respect to Alan's contribution acknowledged, Mark King was at the time, England's finest bass player, and not a bad vocalist if I'm honest. 🎸🤓
When I get my time machine working, I know exactly which era I want to revisit.
i know right! soooo many underrated bands who are never spoken of in the mainstream of 2022
My thoughts exactly - take me back to the 80’s!
Can I book a ticket?
I call shotgun!
Mark King playing bass guitar like a master, and singing like Boz Scaggs at his very best. One of the best songs of the decade.
Man this is so 80's... the perfect definition of that decade
Alguém ouvindo esse som maravilhoso em 03 de janeiro 2024... Eu adorooooo!❤❤
Such a great live performance!
“These changing years they add to your confusion …” This song. That band. The time. Something about you.Timeless brilliance !
The 80s were so special. So lucky to have lived through it as a teenager.
When musicians are actual musicians!
THAKYOU!
...and yet, infuriately (and bizarrely) they spent the next several years lip synching performances of this and other singles all over the place (among the reasons Boon and Phil left). As a fan in the US at that time i never saw them on TV playing live like this. So...the "era" like every other, no doubt was still full of media industry bullshit that devalued talent and musicianship over whatever TF they think marketing to make money is....
I'm glad clips like this exist.
This song is simply a masterpiece! The music, the lyrics, the arrangement. Just fantastic!
Absolutely fantastic. 1985 (aged 14), the year I discovered Level 42 and became a life long fan.
Amanda Hodgkinson Same as me 14yo 3 days before this performance. Bass sounds great
was 24 and have never stopped loving them. been to many of their concerts. never a bad one. Something about You was my wedding march lol. and Heaven in My Hands was my daughter's Mum/bride dance 3 years ago at her wedding.
Same here! Same age too!
I was only 3 and I discovered this band around the 00s thanks to a friend of mine who had a blast in this decade. Shame on me for being so young.. Greetings from Colombia South America..
I was 11, saw them on MTV, that was it for me. Been a fan since. This song is one of my all time favorites period.
What an amazing performance! Mark and Mike were vocally on fire!
This music was the soundtrack to my teens, a brilliant blast from the past. Thanks for posting👍
I agree, awesome song. I love 80s and early 90s music. Some people tell me to let go of the 80s, I'm like no. That was an era of awesome music and pop culture
But, these same people lisren to today's Country. Ughhh lol.
@@susanmeadows8795 I'm like you and will never stop listening to 80s music! I like some of the 90s music too. And today's country music isn't country.. there are a few country artists out there who are keeping traditional country music alive, but they aren't played on radio these days, very sad
hola corazón como estas y como sigues del puente
Totally agree 😁👍
You are obviously in good company.
Pop perfection and musical virtuosity
They’re actually playing live too! Awesome!!!
I ❤ Level 42
This video is a time machine! Love it!
I probably heard this song like 10 thousand times back in the day...
It ought to be a criminal act to not show more of the bass work on camera
Truth.
A total 80s classic,sounding note-perfect! Love it!
Mike has a super voice. He and mark are perfect on these songs.
I'm hyperfixated on this song!!! I remember it from when I was a kid and just found it again. So good!!!
One of my favorite songs of all time! Mark King is easily on the best bass players ever. Wow!
De beste die er ooit is geweest
When you are so many years "later" and pulling up every version of the sing there is, i.e. remixes, 12" & 7", extended, and anything Shep Pettibone put his hands on.
I really loved this song
The most technically sophisticated songs of 1985 and an incredible live performance.
I love this song❤❤❤❤❤
The Professor of Rock YT chan has just posted a vid that this is his favourite EVER 80's song (July 2022)…I intuitively sensed this was the perfect, archetypal pop song back then, 37 years ago…Nothing since has changed my mind…Though every day I welcome in musical inspiration…Just glorious! 😚
As soon as I saw the video's title I immediately thought of this song!
Thank you Boon for the lyrics to this brilliant classic song! 🙌🏻 #rip
R.I.P. Level 42 Guitarist Mr. Boone Gould.
He was a legend RIP
L42 and Mark King! He was said on MTV back in late 80's to be the best bassist of all time due to this unorthodox style and how he could multi-task singing and playing. I agree............He was LEGEND!
Oh such happy days that I can never forget.
Thank you guys and love you.

LEVEL 42& Mark King one of the most underrated groups of the 80’s!! REAL MUSIC….🎼 I
So true !!!!
Phil Gould on drums - the perfect finishing touch to Mark's bass. Stunning!
Phil, after part of Re-flex and drumming on the song, the politics of dancing
My man is playing the bass pretty well along with singing great
This right here is still my all time favorite 80’s baby❤🤙🏽
Beautiful music 🎶👏👏👏👏👏👏🎸🎻🎹🪕🎷🎺🎶😍👍
Wow what Magnificent performance so happy to have had the privilege of growing up in the 1980s
I saw them open for Madonna at the King Dome in Seattle. What a great show!
Love the 80s, when you could be unique and nobody cared. This is how genuine individuality is done.
... best in the business ...
Finally a TV show that isn't lip synching!!!
Well sung, I enjoyed that. It's on my play list now.
I used to really look forward to The Tube, on telly on Fridays, It was the perfect opener for the weekend.
Level 42: Great musicians. Mark King is a legend and the whole band and their stage show are second to none. Knowing how to craft songs and knowing how to present them live is special.
This band were true talent. A classic track! This live performance is incredible!
Little known fact, all sax players in the mid 80s were required by law to have a luxurious, blown out, mullet.
Simply gorgeous.
The penalties were serious. They included being transported to 2024 and being forced to listen to the music.
@@stuartdryer1352 and fed a steady diet of monotone rap.

Sweet BASS!!!
How impressive it is to discover and watch this day 18/10/2020 this song recorded live 35 years ago ! Thanks for memories !
This song changed my life back in 1985
I don’t know how Mark can sing and slap bass, he’s a genius!! ✌️☺️
Total respect for the band, Mark, you are a Bass hero to me!
This band was WAY ahead of their time! Wow, incredible live performance, and the sound mix was perfect.
