There’s an extra verse when he sings it live:
She runs back down the hallway and through the bedroom door
She reaches for the pistol kept in the dresser drawer
Tells the lady in the mirror, "He won't do this again
'Cause tonight will be the last time, she'll wonder where he's been"

This was his original lyrics but the country music scene made him remove it because it was too violent for country radio at the time.

Garth was and is something special. Once in a lifetime kinda thing. Essentially was the 90s version of Elvis, or the Beatles. He was the biggest star on the planet, regardless of genre. Outselling Madonna, MJ, etc combined. Even people who never liked country, or listened to it at all loved Garth.

    • @bearhall4919
      @bearhall4919 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

Did you just compare Garth Brooks to the Beatles? Really? I mean... yeah, he was a superstar as far as country goes, but I'm pretty sure he didn't change the landscape of all the way the Beatles or Elvis did. Come on now.

@@bearhall4919 You must not have been around in the 90s to see it. Yeah, he was as super as a superstar could be. And for the record, i didn't imply that he was revolutionary, or changed the landscape of music (although you could argue that he did that for country music), just that he was an absolutely insanely massive superstar the likes of which we hadnt seen since the Beatles or Elvis.

I spent the fall and winter of '90-'91 in a tent listening to Country in the Persian Gulf and got well acquainted with some Garth Brooks and other country artists that I wouldn't voluntarily have listed to. Admittedly, some of it was quite good and Garth Brooks had a lot to do with my acceptance of the genre. Back stateside in '91, he released another album that had the 'funny' song "Papa Loved Mama" which dealt with cheating in a very different matter. That one is worth a listen. No one could make that same song today without being cancelled.

Not sure if anyone has mentioned this.... but there is a 3rd verse that was banned. this song is actually about domestic violence.

She reaches for the pistol kept in the dresser drawer
Tells the lady in the mirror he won’t do this again

There was a time that this song and/or video were banned from Country Music radio stations and TV because of its content. Also, there is a whole section missing from this version of the song where the wife gets a pistol and ends the relationship - thus the "banning" or being only played at certain hours of the day/night.
Also, Martina McBride's "Independence Day" was also banned and/or played at certain times of the day because of its "controversial" content of the time it was released.

This song always reminds me of high school. There was a hip-hop/R&B radio station that all of a sudden started playing this song, and only this song, for about a week straight. The thunder would roll out at the end and roll right into the beginning of the song again. Turns out the station was transitioning into a country station so they played this instead of having dead air.

Per Songfacts There's a line about thunder rolling in the song. Garth had been listening to that song - he'd been listening to stuff that (producer) Allen Reynolds had given him. He came in and said, 'What if we write a song about somebody who's cheating on his wife, and every time he does it, the thunder rolls.' And I kind of laughed.
Similar to "Friends In Low Places," this song has an extra verse that Brooks would include in live performances. Unlike "Friends...," the extra verse in this case adds a darker tone to the song - the wronged woman goes to get a gun to kill her cheating husband. To make the song commercially viable, that verse was left out.

One of the complaints of today's music is that they use the same simple chords/melodies over and over. Garth is arguably the greatest musician of the last century.

It's true that it's his voice that makes it "country". All that stuff about thunders and so forth was talking about the relationship can have clashes and so forth. Esp. the girl knowing he was cheating.

The electric guitar does add a heaviness to it. You should check out a metal band called All That Remains that does a great cover over this song.

Im pretty sure he is realtivly unknown in Germany. No concerts, no airtime in the radio and Im not sure I ever saw him in german television.

But hey.. if the irish loved him he must have something. ;)

That is absolutely untrue. Wow like wildly untrue.
It is funny how all of the biggest records are held by country artists though.
Garth Brooks has sold more live concert ticket than any performer of any genre in all of history. That's because his concerts were generally dirt cheap, And even when he had front row seating available he would purposely not fill the very 1st row and then when the concert would start he would instruct everybody in the farthest row back to come up and take the front row, because that's just the kind of guy he is.
But he does hold that record for sure.
Toby Keith makes more money from merchandise sales than any performer in any genre. at any time in history. That is almost exclusively due To his chain of bars that he opened worldwide. Jimmy Buffett is an insanely close 2nd place to him.
And George Strait has more number one hit songs than any artist, of any genre, at any point in history. He's pushing 80 chart toppers at this point and the man is still performing.

Ya'll need to see the ACTUAL MUSIC VIDEO starring Garth Brooks as the Husband.
The video was banned from TNN TH-cam and a few other sources, it's hard to find but it's out there (I have it on Laser disk, that's how old I am).
The video is so powerful, Garth Brooks himself wants it removed... odd, since he is the husband in the video.
The video starts with the husband in bed with the Mistress... and she wants him to stay but he says "get real, I'm a family man"
As he's driving home in the storm it shows his wife and little daughter (maybe 6 or 7yo) waiting up for him... the wife has a huge shiner (black eye)... and as the video goes on, the mistress calls the wife and tells her of the affair.
When he gets home, there's a confrontation and he backhands her sending her flying, the daughter sees all this and he turns towards his daughter and that's when the wife pulls out a gun and shoots him.
This is all in the video, and none of this was in the shortened cleaned up version of the song you reacted to.
I highly suggest finding and watching the video... Garth Brooks himself starred in it and wanted it taken down.
Shows how old I am, this video used to play all the time but in today's world, we have to protect everyone from seeing it.

Garth Brooks is a country singer. This is a country song. The video to “ The Thunder Rolls” has been banned from country video channels in the 90’s, because of graphic nature of domestic abuse against the wife by the husband and their child witnesses this.
It was highly controversial in the time.

Well if you want to check out more country I have a couple of suggestions. It's newer stuff and probably covering a few other genres as well. Turnpike Troubadours - Good Lord Lorie, and every other song they sing, huge energy and a bunch of strings!! Hayes Carll - Drunken Poets Dream, and I really like most of his stuff as well. And last but by no means least The Corb Lund Band - Rye Whiskey, Gettin' Down on the Mountain, they're Canadian but I love them!! And I lied when I typed Canadian I thought of another one, Fred J Eaglesmith - Water in the Fuel, Wilder than her, Alcohol and Pills. I hope you enjoy these, they're all great musicians!!

The extra verse that's not played on radio and only played in live performances:
"She runs back down the hallway
    To the bedroom door
    She reaches for the pistol
    Kept in the dresser drawer
Tells the lady in the mirror
    He won't do this again
Cause tonight will be the last time
    She'll wonder where he's been!"
