    200+ channels of hyper-produced crap on tv and I find myself strangely compelled to watch your self produced channel of everyday stuff! Crazy!!
    Quick tip: Next time you need to set a utility pole, try this. Because the poles are tapered from top to bottom, a regular level will automatically give a false reading. Stand back from the pole 20 or 30 feet, holding a plumb bob at arms length. Site the center line of the string to the center of the pole. You can even do this while sitting in the excavator. Of course you’ll still have to get out and site the other direction, but you’ll be surprised how incredibly accurate it is.

    Andrew can I just say, there's a lot I love about your videos, but the absolute best thing that sets you apart from anyone else is how you only upload the video once the project is complete, even if that means waiting months to finish a video. You started this project in the snow, waited until it melted, then finished the job and packaged it together in one long video, where any other youtuber would have said "subscribe to see me finish this project once the snow has melted!". I absolutely love your videos for that.

  • @kctyphoon
    @kctyphoon 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The basics of setting a telephone pole - rule of thump for hole depth is 10% of the length of the pole, plus 2 feet.. so 40’ pole - 4’ plus 2’ = 6’ hole. 45’ pole - 4.5’ plus 2’ = 6.5’ hole.. all the poles we set, level is done by eye.. most poles are bell shaped, (tapered) so wider at bottom and thinner at top, and its common for them to come with a warp even when new. There should be a brand on the pole with the length and class (thickness). Smaller the class #, the thicker the pole. (Just like wires and gauge). If you ever have to do some again - dont use that type of hook on the chain again. Either use some type of sling or a chain sling that chokes the pole. At the very least buy a sliding choker hook. (3/8 grade 80 choker hook is like $20 on eBay/amazon) A hook like the one you used can come undone easily (as we saw) if weight is taken off the pole in a NOT ideal moment - (bottom of pole touches something, like the ledge of the hole as you’re trying to get in it) allowing what could be a 2000 pound piece of wood to come falling down. With the poles being thinner towards the top, if the chain you used slipped when the pole turns upright, theres a good chance it would continue to slide - since the further the pole drops in that type of setup, the thinner the pole is getting ad what you used was not ‘self tightening’ . You want something that chokes it, so the sling will always grip, even if it slipped a few inches when turned upright. Also - once the pole is set, the pressure on a chain sling will release by itself as soon as the weight is off, and you can just let it slide down to the bottom of the pole to remove it. Simply by lowering your boom. When done, the brand on the pole should wind up about 4’ above the ground level. Always leave extra dirt around the base of the pole - the ground will always sink a little as dirt settles. As far a utility goes - the power or phone company can own the poles out on the street. You should see a tag on the front, with letters and numbers on them. That will determine who owns which one. There is no rhyme or reason to who actually owns it (at least here in NJ, or in the NYC boroughs) Ownership can commonly alternate even on the same street if theres 8 poles, 4 may be power’s, the the other 4 might be telepone’s. Or they could all be owned by telephone, or all be owned by power company. . The letters on the tag will reflect either your local power company, ( like JCPL/PSEG )- or phone company (Verizon). Pole # JC1234 - owned by JCPL. BT1234/VZ1234 - owned by Verizon (formally Bell Telephone). and just FYI - wood IS a conductor, just not a very good one. The wetter the wood the better it conducts. Primary voltage is around 18,000 - 23,000 volts. If you were setting a pole and it hit existing primary lines - it WILL conduct electricity, burn, smoke, catch of fire. Don’t ever let anyone touch a pole (without approved rubber gloves) when setting near power, or lean on or touch whatever equipment you’re operating. The machine WILL conduct electricity. It doesn’t take much to stop a heart. Few years ago the power company here in NJ lost a 19yr kid working for them when he picked up a primary line that was CUT at both ends. Even CUT - the wire stored enough energy inside (like a battery) to stop his heart. - which is why you might wanna think about grounding your building, esp with that giant metal roof you just installed.. concrete conducts power at high voltage. It’s exactly that reason why lineman have rubber blankets to jump onto when jumping off their trucks, god forbid something bad happens and the truck becomes electrified. Lastly, the longer the winch line (or chain in your case) you use, the less control you have over the pole. Shorter is ALWAYS better. It limits how much it can swing around on you. But yea - nice job.. no way I’d be out in the snow on my own time putting a pole up.. lol

    I'd defiantly recommend replacing your lights to led's. I'm not someone who is an environmentalist crazy person but when the bulbs pay for themselves in 1 1/2 to 2 years they are well worth then your Savin money and get brighter lights. I recon mend for normal lights the Philip ones at Home Depot that are around 3-6 bucks a bulb. We've replaced almost every single bulb in our house

      Andrew Camarata the lights you use the most are worth switching out the sooner the better but the ones you don't really use just replace as you go when we did the lights in my bedroom and the kitchen and hallway lamps to start my mom saw a roughly 10-15 dollar drop in the electric bill right away and that is only about 5-10% of all lights in the house

    • @andrewlyon6834
      @andrewlyon6834 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Andrew Camarata the spirals (fluorescent bulbs) are energy efficient compared to incandescent but the leds are the most energy efficient plus fluorescents tend to flicker and you have to let them warm out and have a humming that gets annoying. Also the LEDs don't get hot either. The flood lights you had looked like in a descents which LEDs will be way more energy efficient and also slightly brighter

    • @AndrewCamarata

    Constructive informational purposes only:
    Plumb the pole with a plumb bob at 45 degree angles.
    Tamp around the pole as you backfill.
    For safety sake always have at least two people when you set utility pole.
    Thanks for the gear videos Andrew.
    Always entertaining and educational.

    Hi Andrew. My name is Bob, I've been sick since a week before Thanksgiving, it started as Covid19 and progressed to maybe a lifelong illness and hasn't let up. I have a window washing business that's at a halt with nobody to trust to keep it going so I'm home 24/7. Your videos are awesome to pass my time. Thanks for sharing everything you do.

Great job with the pole. I love the drone work very creative the Castle is outstanding and I love the way you just nonchalantly take on any task or job. Please don't stop your the best man.
