  • This is an OLD EPISODE from back in late 2012. Actually this was my first "Exploring" video which went over so well, it started the Exploring series spinoff. Unfortunately at the time when I first did this I was being flagged by youtube and since the episode was longer than 15 minutes, I couldn't upload it here.
    After that was cleared up I thought I brought it over but never did. So now I am rectifying that. Enjoy.

      I have been waiting a long time to see someone defend this movie (and others, Pandorum, Event Horizon, et al). It has become far too easy for others to hop on the hate train than it is for the few who appreciate these little gems to defend their opinions. Being an avid gamer and fan of the Silent Hill series as well as a being a bit of a cinephile I have to say this movie is one of the best, if not the best spiritual translations of the original work to screen. Is it flawed? Yes. Is it an exact translation? No. But it does capture the mood, the atmosphere and the essence of everything I loved about playing these games. Christophe Gans deserves far more credit and appreciation for his acheivement.

    The only thing i disagree with is that Pyramid Head only represents rape. Which while it is part of his symbolization in Silent Hill 2, its not entirely what he represents in both the game and the film. In Silent Hill 2 Pyramid Head was James representation of his need to be punished for killing his wife. This is evident by Pyramid Head constantly killing Maria, and James lines before the final fight with him. In the first movie though, he was really only there because he's the most iconic creature of the Silent Hill series and kind of became it's mascot. Revelations was a little deeper with him sort of being like a protector and executioner for Alessa.
    Just the thing im trying to say here is that Pyramid Head represents a lot more than just being a rape monster.

    • @Fickji
      @Fickji 7 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      If they ever did a 3rd Silent Hill with Sean Bean as the main protagonist they could find a way to tie Pyramid Head to that character. Kinda like doing the games out of order: the first movie is the first game, the second movie is the third game, the third movie could be the second game.
      Would be interesting if when they adopted Sharron, Sean Bean's character did something not yet revealed to bring Pyramid Head into being.
      But this is all wishful thinking and the way Konami is going....

    • @JohnQBrown
      @JohnQBrown 7 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Pyramid Head served several roles. James was tortured by his guilt for wanting to have sex and romance while his wife wasted away--Pyramid Head was the manifestation of that guilt and the Id that would take such relations even though he "wasn't allowed"; PH "penetrated" Maria repeatedly, and the first fucking thing you see him doing is pretty unambiguously raping one of the double-leg monsters that represent James' sexual frustration. It's OK, artistically (and accurate), to regard PH as a rape monster and then some.

    • @JohnQBrown
      @JohnQBrown 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Oh fuck, that seems even darker and more horrifying than ever. That means that PH was in many cases James' Id, guiding him to base survival through Silent Hill even if his methods are...disturbing, to say the least. It's acting out his darker fantasies and still serving the function of impetus to ensure James drives on through the ordeal.
      Yuck.

    • @floydharper4653
      @floydharper4653 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I know what you mean, he does represent rape on a level, but that's far from it, more a general representative of James's shadow side, in Jungian terms. But I will say that pyramid head doesn't really make sense outside silent hill 2, he's very specific to james

    • @maxthescarecrow4038
      @maxthescarecrow4038 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      While I agree that Pyramid head works mostly only with James, there is a Silent Hill comic saying that Pyramid head is actually the protector of the town and it's executioner. Not sure if I am personally buying but it is something to look into.

      It’s hated by mainstream audiences as it sort of requires you to have played the games to fully understand what’s going on. It’s also a very slow paced movie, and audiences didn’t appreciate the filming style, the atmosphere, the creature design or soundtrack.
      This is an example of s videogame movie done right. It was made for fans first, mainstream audiences last, and it smashes it out of the park. The fact it’s classed as Rotten on RT disgusts me as it’s far from bad and is the best videogame movie of all time.

The Sean Bean subplot didn't bother me or slow the pacing and seeing his struggle for answers was cool but wasn't really needed and could be taken out. This movies atmosphere and overall tone creates and captures these realities perfectly and when you finally get some kind of answer it feels worth it and never a build up to nothing! Great video! Hell, just an all round underrated film that I love. Also nice to hear someone acknowledge and say how film adaptations have to change and do different from source materials (great examples by the way) it's annoying that video game fans don't seem to get this, there has to be changes, especially going from an interactive medium to a passive one

Hence why he has a heavy sword that he has to drag as well as the headpiece that keeps his head pulled down. He is also the reimagined form of an executioner from the second game. This is most notable in the movie where Anna (I think that was her name) has her entire flesh ripped from her body. this is a saying from the bible that states that every sin shall cost a piece of one flesh. This is why I actually like his presence in this movie. He actually has a purpose here and isn't just being injected in solely for fan service.

    OMG finally someone who gets it! No seriously, the number of reviewers, self-proclaimed lovers of the Silent Hill series, people I usually really like and respect that gave this movie horrendous reviews because it wasn't perfectly *identical* to the game series is too numerous to count. Fans of the games who clearly had a bias against it from the start or people who clearly did not pay attention enough or simply didn't "get" it...
    Most common misunderstood elements of the movie:
    *- "Why is Rose taking Sharon to toxic fumes Silent Hill in the middle of the night? That's stupid!"*
    She wasn't... She was heading for Brahms, the next town (you see a road sign for it early in the scene, it's not there by coincidence), and would've more than likely taken Sharon to the Silent Hill the next day, but Cybil showing up forced her to change her plans. With the cop chasing her she probably figured her husband had called in a kidnapping and instead of giving up and be arrested right there and then and never getting any answers, she made a last ditch effort to get to the town. She couldn't have guessed Silent Hill was Hell town.
    *- "Why are the monsters and Pyramid Head trying to kill Rose if Alessa wants a new mother? That's stupid!"*
    Did you not notice whenever the monsters got the upper hand - the children overwhelming Rose, PH nearly breaking down the door to get to her, etc - they suddenly stop and disapear? They were testing Rose's resolve to save her daughter. Rose, after these seemingly near death experiences, could've just broke mentally or given up, but she endures. Alessa's biological mother, Dahlia, was a coward with no backbone that did not stood up for her daughter against the cult and instead let them burn her to a crisp. She would not suffer another weak mother. See? There's a little bit more going on than the whole lot of nothing some people claim.
    *- "Being born out of wedlock hardly qualifies as 'witch' material. Such a weak excuse versus the awesome game counterpart!"*
    Can you not use your imagination for a damn second? Dahlia would or could not name the father. Why is that? If naming a father could clear her daughter from suspicion then why doesn't she? Maybe because there isn't one, that the conception was immaculate, you know, like a certain biblical figure... I think this would be consider highly blashemous within an extremely rigid, trigger-hapy cult don't you think? No, Alessa wasn't used to birth an evil god, but the new twist on the story brings up a ton of new implications that are posssibly much deeper than the games. Without going into Christianity necessarily, the first appearence of Dark Alessa at the hospital coud very well be a demon or an evil entity there to corrupt what remains of what should've been a force for good, had it been allowed to mature in a nurturing environment. It certainly is more interesting to look at it this way rather than insisting on it simply being about birth out of wedlock, not seeing anything else implied there, and crying about it... The movie shouldn't have to explain *everything*.
    *- "Pyramid Head was punishing James for his sins in the game. What does he represent here?? He has no point!."*
    You can easily interprete PH representing Alessa's burning (literally) vengeance. He is an executioner, hunting down cultists in the hellish otherworld and punishing them for what they did. I thought it was kinda obvious really...
    *- "There was no reason for the red nurse or the sexy nurses to be there! Much like PH, they are glorified cameos!"*
    Sure, they are elements that have been made popular in later games that were included for recognition, but much like PH, they are still given a purpose. Older burnt and bedridden Alessa knows she will never look pretty or sexy to herself or to anyone and so she resents the nurses she is in the care of for their beauty, she resents the look of fear they have in their pretty face when they look at her. Older Alessa being just boiling rage at this point and long past being kind has no issue tormenting and torturing them in hellish Silent Hill... She punishes the red nurse by gouging her eyes out and she punishes the others by disfiguring them, effectively turning them into a twisted version of "butherface". Again, it's something that needs a little bit of observation and brain matter to put together.
    But of course, if your mindset is the games = perfection and any adaptation = utter crap that could never live up to the source material, I'm sure you'll find every reasons to hate this movie. The same way the Ghost in the Shell liveaction was wildly panned by fans, even though it's the best adaptation of an anime to date... And how many Tolkien purists absolutely hate Peter Jackson's adaptation of the LotR novels. I find it so baffling sometimes.
    But enough ranting...
    PS: Silent Hill Revelation, now *THAT'S* a bad movie...

    • @xen0bia
      @xen0bia 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Zayne simard moore Well, the ironic thing is that the second movie is the result of the producers listening to the complaints about the 1st movie not being enough like the game (because remember game = perfection) and so they fudged up what should have been an original storyline for the sequel to make a re-hash of the 3rd game instead, but with none of the care, passion, production quality, smart writing, etc. of the 1st one. That's why we got an absolute trainwreck of a movie as a sequel. Oh and, JUMP SCARES, because getting startled is truly the scariest sh*t ever... Oh boy.
      Love or hate the first movie, at least Christophe Gans, the director, genuinely loved the game series and it showed, but he still wanted to make this adaptation his own, and I was perfectly alright with that. When you try to make a carbon copy of a game, you get Silent Hill Relevation...

      The people in this thread who like the movie have to mock and demonize the people who don't, and that reflects very, very poorly on them. I do not like the film, and it has nothing to do with wanting the film to be identical to the game. I want to preserve the spirit, the subtlety and the psychology of the series, and on top of that just be a good movie overall. I do not think the first Silent Hill film accomplishes any of these things. In your long comment here you make a lot of leaps in logic in order to defend inconsistencies, but many of your points are just inferences and not actually supported by the film. You want it to be more intelligent than it is, so you make up connections where there are none (the sexy nurses defense in particular is, frankly, laughable) and then passive-aggressively berate other people for not seeing those non-existent connections.
      I would have been nicer, by the way, if you hadn't felt the need to insult everyone who has a different opinion than you. But you did, so I didn't feel like being kind in turn.
      And also, there's nothing wrong with enjoying the film. I don't think it's irredeemably terrible. Different opinions are fine, but if you think the people who hate this movie are being condescending elitists, then be jerks to THOSE PEOPLE, don't just insult everyone who doesn't like the movie. You're acting just as bad as them.

    • @xen0bia
      @xen0bia 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Wveth Oh boohoo, cry me a flippin' river... I never insulted people who simply don't like the movie, but I do take issue with the ones that hate it only because it's not a carbon copy of the game or because they have widly misundertstood it, and clearly I've hit a nerve with you. And you don't think that's most people?? Again, the original plans for the 2nd movie had to be scrapped to give us Revelation instead because fans bitched and moaned how the first movie wasn't enough like the game. What a great success that turned out to be... Yeah, some things *need* to be infered, because the movie doesn't spoon-feed you every bit of information, but it leaves enough clues to let you figure it out. That you choose to see things strictly at face value is your perogative, that doesn't make my "leaps in logic" (lol) any less valid. I hate using the expression "you just don't get it", but saddly sometimes people really don't, to the detriment of the movie, and it's only decades later that some movies get the recognition they deserves.

    My only contention has always been that they replaced Harry and the reason why they replaced him:
    "It quickly became clear however Harry never acted like a masculine character. He was constantly dizzy, fainting, talking to himself, screaming and in fact was very vulnerable. We didn't want to betray the nature of the game by changing the character's feelings and motivations, so we felt it was better to change to a female protagonist and retain all those important qualities. I don't want people to think that I have been "politically correct" because we changed Harry into Rose. There is no political correctness in Silent Hill."
    Apparently only a woman can be vulnerable and acting in a desperate need to find their child.

      Also, some of the violence is very over the top, and a bit silly.

    This one was good. I had to watch it a few times to understand it. Never played the game but this was my favorite movie in 2006.

    I love the soundtrack and the atmosphere of the movie but the plot is probably my biggest gripe along with Harry not being used.

    When you put that photo of Uwe Boll up there I physically flinched. How dare you put that image up there - I hope youtube demonitizes this video for it's use of these disturbing images.

    God, I love this film so much, thank you GoodBadFlicks for giving Silent Hill a great review and retrospective. I'm also a massive fan of the games and have played the main first four. I would've loved to have played the other games in the franchise. Again, thanks very much GoodBadFlicks.

    My favorite horror movie of 2006, but man the sequel was piece of shit.. really, really bad

    • @GoodBadFlicks
      @GoodBadFlicks  7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The sequel happened because the studio thought the original was too complicated and made them simplify it. I thought it had some good production design and they were trying to emulate part 3 of the game series but ultimately, it was undone by meddling. I don't think its terrible but it was a steep drop off from the original.

      GoodBadFlicks it was also made by a different director, and it was the new directors first attempt at 3D. On top of that, switching characters around and not understanding the lore behind the franchise added to the terrible movie it became.

    "...But now is the end of days and I... am... the reaper." I love this movie and that monologue is so awesome. Still the best video game adaptation, in my opinion.

    I disagree that Sean Bean´s scenes are useless, it explains that there are 2 (or even 3) realities: the Normal world, the fog world and the hell world, also the cop that takes him to Silent Hill explains better the things about the cult (before Dark Alessa fills a few holes when Rose gets to the basement)
