    Have to be careful, not everyone buys graphics cards for games. I had one of these thrown in with a renewed HP Mini Tower PC I bought online. My main interest is trancoding videos and for hardware GPU encoding I seem to remember it being OK using FFmpeg and h264 nvenc (both under Linux using propertiary driver). Since it was a freebie thrown in with the HP PC I was very pleased with it. I would happily pay a fair price for it.

      Yea it's still a desirable card despite being so old. Def shocked me on that, and people practically throw them away. I mostly use them for real cheap budget pc's and they help sell them real quick, but every know and them people will buy them off of me for like $40-50 for non gaming purposes. Thanks for watching and for the input. Much appreciated!

    • @ozzuneoj
      @ozzuneoj 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      To go a bit further with this, it isn't just about bandwidth either. More modern architectures tend to provide better performance even if the overall specs (including bandwidth) are lower. If you look at some older generations of high end cards they often had very high memory bandwidth, but later generations of mid-range cards with lower bandwidth often have less of a bandwidth bottleneck due to better compression, so they often perform better. The differences between the Kepler and Maxwell architectures are a good example of that. Of course all the other improvements in newer architectures make it hard to pinpoint exactly where the gains are coming from.
      As a general rule, going with a newer chip is better unless there is a huge difference in the overall performance tier (1030 is comparable to a 750 Ti, but an ancient GTX 680 will still trounce either one). This is why it's very important to know exactly what GPU is under the cooler on lower end models. The performance differences between Fermi and Kepler based low end cards are immense, even if the model numbers make them look similar (Fermi based GT730 vs Kepler based GT730). At least with the Quadros you always know what you're getting. :)

    • @themetalprincess
      @themetalprincess 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ozzuneoj You missed the point in your attempt to shine. Everytime someone seems "surprised" by the performance of an old card --almost everytime if you will notice the graphics card will have a bit more bandwidth than expected, and or a few more texture mapping units. Even when you are talking about old DDR3 cards. These two features are how both nVIDIA and AMD manipulate the power of graphics cards without the consumer and "experts" like yourself much noticing. As far as your arguement that "newer" is better because of hardware architcture to a slight degree this is true -- but when you factor in the cost and price associated, not so much. A good example is a nvida GTX1050 ti performance compared to a GTX 680. The 1050ti is 4 years newer and the performance is virtually the same with less than 2% difference LOL. In most cases there is just little to no value for the consumer in BUYING the newest latest hardware outside of bragging rights. I still maintain that bandwidth and texture mapping units are the two most important features you should look for from a performance perspective in a good graphics card.

    • @ozzuneoj
      @ozzuneoj 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@themetalprincess I think there may be some misunderstanding here, and I don't know why you're being so confrontational. Look at what I said. When comparing similar\close GPU models, the architecture makes a huge difference. Look at the performance of the GT740 (rebadged GTX 650 kepler) versus the GTX 750 Ti (first gen Maxwell). They have nearly identical pixel and texel fill rate and bandwidth, yet absolutely no one would dispute that the 750 Ti is a more capable GPU and has aged far better. Likely in part due to the far higher shader processing speed, but the rest of the specs don't seem to be bottlenecking it either. I'd really like to see a comparison of the Quadro K620 or GTX 745 (both Maxwell) to a GT740 GDDR5 (and a DDR3 model), to see how the stripped down Maxwell chip with DDR3 performs next to a seemingly more balanced Kepler based card with 2.5 times the memory bandwidth.
      Also, your comment about the 680 vs the 1050 Ti completely confirms what I said. When comparing vastly different product tiers, the older higher-end one will often still compete or win out due to brute force. Seriously, the 680 has nearly twice the texel fillrate, 30% more shader processing power and twice the bandwidth of the 1050 Ti, yet they only trade blows with each other in benchmarks. How does that prove me wrong? And why was it even necessary to do so? Overall bandwidth is definitely more important than the type of memory, as you originally said, but there is clearly more to it than that.
      It's when you get two chips with SOME similar looking specs then architecture needs to be considered carefully. Absolutely no one would ever say that the 680 and 1060 6GB are even remotely comparable performance-wise, yet the bandwidth (both are 192GB/s) and texel fill rate (128 vs 120-136) are very similar. The pixel fill rate and GFLOPs are much higher on the 1060 of course. If anything, *pixel* fill rate tends to be more indicative of overall performance, but this is highly dependent on workload and isn't always the case across generations. I also made no mention of price at any point. We are commenting on a review of a GPU that many people will get for free or for under $30, remember? It's actually funny, now that I think about it. On a message board 3-4 years ago I made the same observation as you, that a used 680 (then well under $100) was very comparable to a 1050 Ti, so it was a good budget option in situations where efficiency and size were less important than keeping the budget down. They're still not a bad option with current pricing insanity, but now they're approaching 10 years old and if you play AAA titles you're more likely to run into games that need more than 2GB of VRAM or just aren't optimized for Kepler (also, driver support just ended for them, so titles that are affected my never get better).
      Anyway, I think you're on the right track but I don't see why there has to be a disagreement here. In a round about way I think we're agreeing that it isn't about any one particular specification. Either way, you can't dispute the specs of the cards versus the performance they provide. Everyone should do their research and not just look for "GDDR5" or "4GB" or a higher model number, especially when dealing with lower end cards that can vary wildly or be rebadges of previous generations (looking at AMD calling a Terrascale 2 GPU from 2010 an R5 230 in 2014).

    • @themetalprincess
      @themetalprincess 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ozzuneoj theres no misunderstanding or confrontation Ozz. I agree with virtually everything you said. It just seems like anytime you post something online informative someone comes out of the woodwork on TH-cam or Reddit trying to dispute it. I could post the sky is blue on a sunny day, and I would get comments instantly from ppl wanting to argue that Im wrong because im missing the lone grey cloud off in the distance. LOL After awhile it just gets frustrating. Btw the Quadro K620 and GTX 745 are almost virtually the same card only I think the GTX745 has a hair more bandwidth, but somehow loses to the Quadro in performance by about 15-20%. I actually sell both of those cards on ebay, and have the 4GB version of the GTX745 in the low profile pc im using right now. Interesting that you would bring up those exact 2 cards as the Quadro K620 is my favorite low profile card for the money. For around $35-40, you get similar (but slightly less) performance as a GT1030 which people are paying 3x 4x more for. You can even game alittle on a K620 which makes it even a better value. I commend you. You obviously know your graphics cards ;)

      prbly not, this has ddr3 memory which is a real bottlkneck in gaming. the minimum specs this card performs way below it.

      yup, in the video I show Heaven benchmarking with the overclock and it made a big difference. temps would be an issue in a restricted case but this thing can overclock pretty decent and give a decent performance boost.
