It's amazing how civilised and respectful the Aibo community is. Even with all the tooling available, piracy was not a problem. If everyone was like that, we could have nice things again (no DRM protected software, games without kernel mode anticheat to allow them to run on Linux)
It becomes a lot more complicated when piracy sometimes is the only way to preserve something. I wonder how AIBO community is managing this as I'm genuinely concerned that some personalities might just lost forever due to the community being "civilized and respectful". Flash memories die. They all do. When no one backs them up they will be lost. It's just a matter of time. Saying the robot itself has less durability isn't an excuse either since one could theoretically make an AIBO emulator that runs a virtual version in VR and can use the personalities for example.
Almost every AIBO personality has in recent years been uploaded to the Internet Archive. I had been looking after many as well for years just in case. I just wasn't sure how/when to release them. I was then relieved to find that someone already has.
Aibo was a name i gave to a Robotic dog character, in remembrance... Sadly i cannot afford a real aibo (unless i go to Japan where "junk" is sold very cheap)
this is truly an interesting story about a fascinating piece of technology. The Japanese really never cease to surprise or impress, they really were and still are ahead of time. while the US and Europe were making cell phones smaller and smaller, Japan was out here making robot dogs with AI. Can we have more aibo videos? When i was a kid i had somthing simulator to this toy dog, mine was called poo chi, aibo definitely seems like a neat little toy dog :)
Thank you. I've been thinking about doing a more philosophical look at AIBO's personalities and our relationship with them. With some good tech and programming details as well.

My AIBO has never had DHS. If/when it happens I'll be doing the fixing myself. Though I have not had a detailed look at the procedure and I'm hesitant. I do have some head shakes now and then, so taking the head apart and cleaning will have to happen one day. I think contacting Aibovet is a good option. Though I've never used those services, we have chatted and the owner seems dedicated to helping. The good news is you would only need to send the head. I would offer to help you myself, but I suspect I would be slower and cost more than an experienced repairer.
This video was very informative. And I enjoyed it a lot, I will soon buy a Sony CLIE and a nice blue memory stick sometime. And add some cool programs to them and use them to play around more. And impress the family 😂!
I'm really glad you are expanding your 210 software. I hope you have downloaded all the stick images from archive.org. If you need any help let me know.
@@JanusCycle Yes, I have it and it's now broken. It kept hitting its head on everything. A click developed when it moved its head. The other day, something snapped and it can't raise its head. I have to send it in for repair. Save your boxes it came in.
I bought a re-celled battery about ten years ago. I've been using all my knowledge of looking after a li-ion battery when using it and storing it over that time. I don't run my AIBO that often. So far it still seems to be at 90% condition. I did try and re-cell my old battery but the control board had failed. I don't know why.
I only know bits about the various models. This is my own perspective from what I have gathered over time. First generation ERS-110/111, These don't have voice commands. There is some third party software but not too much. I think the second generation is a worthwhile improvement over this model. If I had one I would certainly appreciate it and look after it. Second generation ERS-210/220, These are the most common with the most units sold, with lots of third party software and tools. The best for tinkering with and programming in my opinion. I love my second generation as you may be able to tell from this video. I want to get back to making my custom personality that I started making many years ago. ERS-310/311, A slightly physically simpler and cuter version of the ERS-210/220. But with less custom software available. The ERS-210/220 can run ERS-310/311 software, but many software functions don't perform well on the ERS-210/220. This model has the least appeal to me. They are cute though. I would care for one if I had one. ERS-7, The third generation. Has all the functions of the second generation models plus a bit more. All their software seems to come on just one stick called AIBO MIND. Less third party custom software though. Plays with a bone, as well as the ball that all models have. I've never really watched these much in videos. They are the most mysterious model to me. The above models were all discontinued in 2006 ERS-1000, The modern AIBO from 2018, very expensive and also requires an ongoing subscription. Paid with a Japanese or U.S. credit card for full AI performance. Looks really nice in videos with fluid movement and up to date specifications. I would love to get one. But I'm actually quite poor, I own no assets except all the wonderful junk I've collected over the years. I'm also living well below the poverty line in Australia. But I love exploring technology and making these videos. So I'm determined to keep trying to make a real TH-cam channel.
One more very important note on the second generation ERS-210/220. They don't have build in WiFi. For full tinkering and programming it's best to get the WiFi card that slots into AIBO. Either the AIBO branded WiFi card or the VAIO branded equivalent PCWA-C150S. These both appear to be almost impossible to find. I was extremely lucky to find out in a forum post many years ago about the VAIO equivalent card working in AIBO. Then to actually find one for sale.
@@Raptor50aus Sure, there are no memory stick restrictions on the first generation models. If you get it with a good battery, original memory stick and sound mechanic function then you have a robot dog. You also have a classic piece of history and something to look after.
it is possible to change the ERS-210 language? I now have a second ERS-210 coming from Japan with the charging base etc and I presume it will only understand japanese?
Yes, it's easy to do. Simply copy the English version onto the memory stick. The copy protection will recognise it as the same software and it will all work fine. I've done this myself when I wanted to experience the difference with the Japanese version.
@@Raptor50aus Yes, these are English versions. Backup the Japanese software if you wish and delete the files. Don't format the card, just delete them. Then copy the English version of the same software to the card and it should run fine.
I love your video! I'm so glad I stumbled upon it! I am wondering though if it will be possible to use Sony's OPEN-R API to control custom robotic pets? I did a bit of research and in theory, it would be possible with OPEN-R SDK. I am thinking to make a hexapod pet and OPEN-R would definitely make it easier.
Those 2xx batteries are difficult to re-cell. If they cells go completely dead then the internal board dies completely, preventing re-celling. I don't think the 111 battery has that problem and I'm not sure about the 7 battery. There are some experts out there that can do the re-cell process, but I have no experience with using them.
The AIBO was discontinued years before Rolly. But I expect some people from the AIBO period probably did work on Rolly :) Maybe also on the Sony BSP60 moving Bluetooth speaker as well :)
My understanding is these early AIBOs use a very simple finite state machine used to select the pre-determined behaviours from all the available inputs. The result is each AIBO does develop it's own personality that you can have a unique relationship with. Just don't expect anything complex to emerge.

@@JanusCycle thank you!! I’ll come back for more information when the time is needed ☺️
i need an AIBO NOW
Aibo is nostalgic
I had a Aibo ERS-210 but I lost it :/
I'm sorry for your loss :(
@@JanusCycle but hey I’m getting another one for Christmas
That's cool but... Why is he so scary like who would want such a thing in their house.... Imagine waking up to the red eyes of a robot dog...
You make a fair point. But Willow is cute when she is angry and you get used to that :)
WARNING! I have 7 different robots that have lasted for over a year. My Aibo broke down twice in 45 days. $3000 was an expensive investment.
Do you have the new AIBO model? I’m keen to know what happened.
@@JanusCycle Yes, I have it and it's now broken. It kept hitting its head on everything. A click developed when it moved its head. The other day, something snapped and it can't raise its head. I have to send it in for repair. Save your boxes it came in.
Just goes to show you how the Open Standard helps people enjoy tech for cheaper and longer.
What the Dog doin'?

6:03 I can't stop laughing
Didn’t know these sony dogs went this far back 😮
I must admit, this tiny machine is kinda cute...
Did you have to replace Aibo's battery? I see the prices online are quite good. Which model is best?
The above models were all discontinued in 2006
ERS-1000, The modern AIBO from 2018, very expensive and also requires an ongoing subscription.
@@JanusCycle ok so is the first gen model ok ?
ERS-111?
@@Raptor50aus Sure, there are no memory stick restrictions on the first generation models. If you get it with a good battery, original memory stick and sound mechanic function then you have a robot dog. You also have a classic piece of history and something to look after.
Even as a child I found these robo pets junky and slow and this is because cartoons and movies where robots were much smoother in movement
imagine one day a software to run aibo with a virtual body in VR
From where does one buy an AIBO these days?
AIBO can be bought new from Sony in certain countries or old ones from eBay or Yahoo Japan Auctions via Proxy in other countries.
it is possible to change the ERS-210 language? I now have a second ERS-210 coming from Japan with the charging base etc and I presume it will only understand japanese?
Yes, it's easy to do. Simply copy the English version onto the memory stick. The copy protection will recognise it as the same software and it will all work fine. I've done this myself when I wanted to experience the difference with the Japanese version.
@@JanusCycle where do I get the English version from ?
@@Raptor50aus drive.google.com/drive/folders/1icD1RyThArcYLeUw5SG8S5CJ0JCJTfLr
@@JanusCycle do I dl the file from the website your linked in the video ?
@@Raptor50aus Yes, these are English versions. Backup the Japanese software if you wish and delete the files. Don't format the card, just delete them. Then copy the English version of the same software to the card and it should run fine.
get that poor aibo out of that CAGE
she got out eventually
I love your video! I'm so glad I stumbled upon it! I am wondering though if it will be possible to use Sony's OPEN-R API to control custom robotic pets? I did a bit of research and in theory, it would be possible with OPEN-R SDK. I am thinking to make a hexapod pet and OPEN-R would definitely make it easier.
Unfortunately I don't know. I'm still slowly working through doing things with the more basic R-code scripting language.
I have a 111, two 210s, two 220s and 0ne 7
12 batteries and none of them will run Aibo for more than 2 minutes.
Is the Sony rolly developed by the same team who developed aibo?
The AIBO was discontinued years before Rolly. But I expect some people from the AIBO period probably did work on Rolly :)
Maybe also on the Sony BSP60 moving Bluetooth speaker as well :)
I wonder if one could bring their AIBO into a simulated space on their computer... 🤔
Which model Sony Clie do you have?
I have a PEG-TJ27. I believe almost any CLIE will work with Stikzap, as long as it has a full size memory stick slot.
Thanks
Thank you!, Willow will now have to return for another video one day :)
What i just witnessed
Does Aibopet still make hacks for aibo?
Unfortunately Aibopet has retired from tinkering. He does have a new model AIBO though.
2:18 what happend to that aibo?
the one wiggling about on the ground? normal dog things apparently
I assume that robot is not using artificial neural network? If yes how many parameters? 10k ? ;P
My understanding is these early AIBOs use a very simple finite state machine used to select the pre-determined behaviours from all the available inputs.
The result is each AIBO does develop it's own personality that you can have a unique relationship with. Just don't expect anything complex to emerge.
