I watched that 'Man's Best Friend' documentary showing AIBO funerals on NHK a few years ago. It was fascinating and quite profound actually. It's easy to dismiss this when viewing just the funeral segment out of context on TH-cam as simply another one of those "wacky Japanese" things, but in the actual documentary they interview the monk who conducts the ceremonies and his thoughts on the matter are very poignant and existential. Of course, much of this is down to the inherent animistic nature of Japanese culture and their Shinto beliefs (even though this was a Buddhist ceremony, Buddhism and Shinto coexist in Japan), but there is definitely something more universal going on, as I've seen plenty of Western AIBO owners express similar sentiments. It reminds me of the Star Trek TNG episode "The Measure of a Man" when Data has to prove he's more than simply a machine, after Starfleet orders his disassembly for research purposes. All of this goes to illustrate that Sony's original intent of developing human-robot interaction with the AIBO project has actually succeeded beyond their wildest dreams. I still have my original ERS-110 from 1999 and amazingly he's still working perfectly. As basic as the tech is by modem standards, it's still hugely impressive and stands as a testament to Sony's pioneering spirit. It's always been more than just another piece of consumer tech to me. It's also staggering to me that the original ERS-110 project was actually created at a financial loss to the company. This being a product that sold for $2,500 in 1999! Truly mind blowing. How many other companies would have even entertained such an insane project?! Sony are awesome.
Very well put! That NHK documentary you speak of sounds interesting, so I’ll be scouring the internet for that today 😄👍 As far as machines having a soul & giving them a proper send-away goes.. I don’t believe there’s anything wacky about it. Not sure if there’s a term that’d best fit it, but ever since a young age, I’ve believed that if something is held near & dear to you.. inanimate or not, that is an extension of your very being. Just a looney example of my own… I drive the family kept since ‘03 Toyota 4Runner that I’ve cared for from new to 300k miles currently. That truck has faithfully transported me when I was the most happiest in life and also provided a little cocoon of safe-space when my very existence seemed to be crashing down around me. Nowadays, that old truck is showing her age slightly, yet still runs flawlessly for me & literally me only, it seems like! Its amusing, but also kind of strange, when someone else needs to use it for a bit and things start crazy misbehaving in it (radio refusing to turn on, numerous warning lights starting to light up, etc..) but once returned & driven by myself, everything miraculously is working again 😂😂😂 You cannot tell me that cars are in some way/shape/form, atleast temperamental!

The thing that bugs me about the funerals is as important as these were to people they're getting to the age where they're getting more and more rare, and there must be easily enough parts between all those aibos to get at least a few of them back on their feet.
I believe some people do donate for parts after the funeral. The big problem with old AIBOs is the batteries have no replacements available for the past ten years. Many can be re-celled but some can’t.
@@JanusCycle Im generally curious what would prevent re-celling? Chemistry/Special Chips/Form Factor? (I say this having a giant pile of old batteries of various pdas and computers that will eventually need some TLC)

If they make a version with an SD-card slot, I may consider it. I am still interested in the AI core though. They added an emotion system, even on the "Old" model, which is in my opinion mandatory for an AI.

hello i was very curious where would i get one of the cards you used? i am going to be doing a presentation on aibos and i would love one to use on my 210
Do you mean the WiFi card? The AIBO card is a re- branded Sony PCWA-C150S wlan card. Both are very hard to find these days. Or the programmable pink memory stick? They are also hard to find or expensive.
Hi! I love the video and will be getting my hands on a ERS210 soon for repair! My question is do you know the model number of that Sony wireless card? I would love to install one in my dog but cant seem to find the card online, thanks!
There is an AIBO branded card that is a re-badged VAIO branded card. The VAIO branded card that works is a Sony PCWA C150S. They are very hard to find. You are going to have to keep watching on a Japan Yahoo Auction proxy (eBay as well just in case) to see if one pops up one day. They can only do WEP security so they are not useful for much else these days.
@@JanusCycle Hi I also just acquired a Sony PCWA C150S, and was wondering if I needed any special software (on the dog or PC) to be able to see the dog's sensors as you showed in your video.
@@AlexB-yx5no I'm very pleased and impressed you were able to get one of these, well done. You will need to 'upgrade' your AIBO stick by adding the 'Plus' files found on this page. www.aibohack.com/210/lifeplus.htm You will also need to run AIBOscope, or some of the other programs available on AIBOhack to connect from your PC. www.aibohack.com/210/aiboscope.htm Or you can run Dogslife and AIBOremote on your PC to see and control AIBO. Or run Aibnet to control and re-program AIBO personality routines over Wi-Fi. There are other things you can do with WiFi on those sites, but these are my favourites. I hope this helps, let me know how it goes.
Put the AiboTool CLIE version (from the AiboHack website) into the PALM/Laucher/ folder on your memory stick. It should appear with all your Palm icons and be runable.
@@lucascoster9765 Oh hey, it's easy to miss comment replies on TH-cam, sorry. This is very easy for a Mac to do. Just open the aibotool_clie zip file on your Mac. Then copy the PALM folder that appears over to your memory stick. The Launcher folder will be automatically created and aibotool will automatically be placed inside. Pop the memory stick in your CLIE and you should see aibotool on there. If it doesn't work, or you have questions then let me know :)
Simply copy the English version of the software onto the memory stick, which will overwrite the Japanese version. Maybe make a backup first. It might reset any learning your AIBO has done. Which software are you running? AIBO-Life version 1? archive.org/details/aibo-life-1-english-and-japanese Don't format the stick. Some non-Sony readers might wipe the copy protection. If you want to wipe an AIBO memory stick, delete all the folders and files without formatting.
If you see them as only machines without soul then that could result. Sounds like that could end up a lonely and painful existence. A Buddhist might see the world itself as conscious. If the circuit inside the battery looses power, it will no longer authenticate. It's harder to find a good battery than a working AIBO second generation these days.
now imagine if we connect this to GPT or AutoGPT
hello i was very curious where would i get one of the cards you used? i am going to be doing a presentation on aibos and i would love one to use on my 210
Do you mean the WiFi card? The AIBO card is a re- branded Sony PCWA-C150S wlan card. Both are very hard to find these days. Or the programmable pink memory stick? They are also hard to find or expensive.
@@JanusCycle i meant the wlan card, do you know of any alternatives?
@@francearts9622 I think only these two work due to the driver being in the rom. Also their physical size required to fit in AIBO.
Absolutely mental tech
@@JanusCycle Hi
I also just acquired a Sony PCWA C150S, and was wondering if I needed any special software (on the dog or PC) to be able to see the dog's sensors as you showed in your video.
@@AlexB-yx5no I'm very pleased and impressed you were able to get one of these, well done.
You will need to 'upgrade' your AIBO stick by adding the 'Plus' files found on this page.
www.aibohack.com/210/lifeplus.htm
You will also need to run AIBOscope, or some of the other programs available on AIBOhack to connect from your PC.
www.aibohack.com/210/aiboscope.htm
Or you can run Dogslife and AIBOremote on your PC to see and control AIBO. Or run Aibnet to control and re-program AIBO personality routines over Wi-Fi.
There are other things you can do with WiFi on those sites, but these are my favourites.
I hope this helps, let me know how it goes.
4:56 he mad >:(
How did you get aibo tool on clie? I have the same model as yours and it does not have aibo tool when I put in the stick
Put the AiboTool CLIE version (from the AiboHack website) into the PALM/Laucher/ folder on your memory stick. It should appear with all your Palm icons and be runable.
Can I do it on my Mac? I don’t have windows
If possible please make a tutorial to make aibo tool on my Mac thanks
Hello?
@@lucascoster9765 Oh hey, it's easy to miss comment replies on TH-cam, sorry.
This is very easy for a Mac to do.
Just open the aibotool_clie zip file on your Mac.
Then copy the PALM folder that appears over to your memory stick. The Launcher folder will be automatically created and aibotool will automatically be placed inside.
Pop the memory stick in your CLIE and you should see aibotool on there.
If it doesn't work, or you have questions then let me know :)
Watching try to hump the charger was to much for me
I better get my limb key and start popping parts
what da dog doin
I'm really shocked at the price of these around $500 for one that just about works for the first version 😂
I wonder how to make aibo210 speak human language and set Japanese to English, because my memory stick is Japanese edition. thanks
Simply copy the English version of the software onto the memory stick, which will overwrite the Japanese version. Maybe make a backup first. It might reset any learning your AIBO has done.
Which software are you running? AIBO-Life version 1?

Don't format the stick. Some non-Sony readers might wipe the copy protection. If you want to wipe an AIBO memory stick, delete all the folders and files without formatting.
Having robot friends sounds kinda solipsistic.
If you see them as only machines without soul then that could result. Sounds like that could end up a lonely and painful existence.
A Buddhist might see the world itself as conscious. With all beings, including AI, as a lens through which consciousness experiences.
I prefer the latter myself. Thank you for your insight and interesting comment :)
@@JanusCycle I guess in a way you know everyone you know as your mental "model" of them. Even a completely inanimate teddy could be a person to a child who made up a personality for it.
@@matt92hun Philosophers have wondered about this for millennia, and here we are, continuing that process in the age of the A.I. revolution.
My pipe dream... 😿
Damn that mutt with it's eyes, looks kinda evil
if you put it in VRChat, all the users will call it protogen dog or proto dog
I didn’t know that you could swap out Aibo programs on the older models. Have a wonderful day and may God bless. Jesus Christ loves you! :)
The video was helpful but don't show an aibo butt
Why not
lol dat garbo is 4000 rn looooooooooooooooolllllllll
