    Hi Mary,
    This is just awesome information. I’m a nanny, but a family actually hired me to be a mentor to their 18mo old that at the time was not walking or talking. I have about 30+ years experience working with children and babies in non medical environments so this was a special assessment I felt unqualified for and expressed my concerns but the family asked if I’d just work as a mentor for 3 months so I accepted the position. My specialty is in infant sleeping, table manners, and typical toddler behavior issues. I’ve been with this child now for 3 years and love her and her family so much. Part of my time with the child is to take her to speech therapy twice a week. What I’ve already learned from just one of your videos “teaching imitation” has confirmed what my complaint has been with her therapist. In the 3yrs we’ve changed therapist several times. Most would just show the child a picture of say a dog and say “dog says woof”, more pictures and sounds, putting animals in the barn etc. Well since I’m not medically trained, I had to be careful as not to presume their method but it accomplished nothing in the way of therapy and moving this child ahead. It frustrates me we wasted so much of this child valuable learning time when early intervention of these spectrum issues is critical. I understand how children learn through play, and learn to talk, and I understand their behaviors and their avoidance behaviors just from years of experience. But I mentioned to the therapist one day after weeks of this same ole thing getting nowhere, we read to her at home and play the barn game etc, but her issues at this age and stage seem to be physical in nature. It wasn’t that she didn’t know that a dog goes “woof” it was that either her brain wasn’t connecting the dots to her muscles or her muscles themselves could not make her body produce any words. They would not explore this information from her caregiver, or try any oral implements to help her learn to control her tongue and lips. I read online about the importance of sucking from a straw so I focused on that for many weeks, but her muscle tone was weak and she could not pull any kind of liquid up. I cut the straw smaller but still she resisted. So we worked from the other end. I put the straw in ice cream and fed it to her like a baby bird sucking it off the bottom and within a week she was sucking from the top of a short straw, then on from there.
    We play imitation games a lot sometimes she will follow, I say Ahhhh then “M you do” and she might follow my lead and say ah, but it’s hit and miss. I realize now this step is to advanced and I need to go back to a simpler way to teach her this game of imitation. I’m so glad I found this on TH-cam. I can’t wait to share this new game of learning with her. 😉👍😊

    My 2 year old will just grab the items and throw them before I could even demonstrate what he’s supposed to do with them. What do I do in this case? Do you have any videos on stopping toy throwing?

    Thank you! I’m just finding your channel and loving it. I wanted to ask you (maybe there is a video and I missed it) my son is 6 years old. He is going to first grade. He struggles with being told to do something in a group settings. What I mean is if the teacher is in front of the room and tells the entire class to do something he either is zoned out or doesn’t process it fast enough. He needs to be talked to one on one and face to face to keep his focus. Any tips to help him?

      Perhaps he needs a one to one to support him in this need or smaller group instruction.

    What if he just concentrates on getting one of the items and running away and not imitating?

    • @marybarbera
      @marybarbera  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You will want to pair the table with reinforcement and perhaps start with activities that aren't imitation like shoebox or potato head. I cover all of this in my new book or my online courses. You can take a free workshop here www.marybarbera.com/workshops

      @@marybarbera one more question. My son he likes to walk around snapping his fingers. Also when he sees something he likes he will be snapping his fingers. Any advice of how to make him stop doing that. Does your book have advice about how to help him stop doing that.
