  • This is a 1000km (600 mile) snowmobile trip that I took with three friends up the North Coast of Labrador (Canada). It took a total of 5 days to complete and it was well worth the ride. Amazing sights at all angles at all times. What an experience and a great challenge. The Skandic SWT took me through with ease and great comfort.

    Great trip. Do you prefer pulling the Pelican sled or something on skiis? payload in 1/2 ton truck enough or you prefer 3/4 ton HD? You have 900 Skandic wide track but do you think I can get by off 600 wide track Skandic, saves me some money on 15k machine. Do you carry ramps and a winch in truck bed in case no snow bank to load the snow machine?

    • @ChuckPorterEverythingOutdoors
      @ChuckPorterEverythingOutdoors  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Tony
      I prefer the Pelican sled hands down.
      I would prefer to have the 3/4 ton truck but very expensive. I compromised and put an extra leaf spring in the back and a lifter in the front.
      I owned a 600 ace for many years before the 900’s came out. Suited me just fine. Unless you’re into carrying huge sleigh loads of gear, carrying a person in back with you a lot, or riding in deep deep snow, a 600 would be just fine. For my lifestyle, the 900 suits me better
      I carry A folding ramp with me all the time. No winch. Often times I just use a bank of snow.
      Cheers bud👍

    • @ChuckPorterEverythingOutdoors
      @ChuckPorterEverythingOutdoors  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No not at all. Roughness isn't really an issue at all. In fact, I have the upgraded struts which could in theory make it rougher again....but not an issue

      My first and only sled was a 1979 5500 Blizzard with leaf spring front end suspension. It does not get much rougher but I never spent much time thinking about how rough the ride was. I was 18 at the time so my body would have a different opinion at 50... Great video. I would take this over a tropical island vacation any day of the week. Very few women share that opinion, including my wife.

    • @ChuckPorterEverythingOutdoors
      @ChuckPorterEverythingOutdoors  ปีที่แล้ว

      I guess I don’t do much side hill driving other than it I’m trying to access a rough area. It’s certainly not built like a mountain machine. The swt is designed for travel in deep snow and carrying heavy sleigh loads. Worked perfectly in that realm.

    I know this video was made a few months ago, but I just found & enjoyed it immensely. I especially enjoyed the scenery, wide open spaces, and those awesome little villages. Are these Natives/Inuit's settlement? Other than fishing/hunting, how do people make a living? I'm from Northern Ontario, all we got here is trees, trees & more trees. While going for a sled ride, we burn, almost, as much gas on chainsaws, cutting the blowdowns, as we do on the snowmachines...:-). Final question, if I may: Did you ever have a chance to compare your SWT vs. a WT ? Awesome video, new subscriber. Thank you Sir.

    • @ChuckPorterEverythingOutdoors
      @ChuckPorterEverythingOutdoors  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the detailed comment! Yes it was quite the trip and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves for certain. Most of the communities along this coast were primarily Inuit and innu. There are fish plants in some communities and just outside of Nain there is a huge nickel plant (Vale). Beautiful people who would give their heart to anyone.
      To answer your other questions regarding WT vs SWT: I had three VK 540 (Yamaha) snowmobiles and out approx 65,000 kms collectively on them. They were awesome machines but then I acquired a SWT (600 ace) in 2013. I was absolutely amazed at the difference the wider track made (plus the four stroke engine etc). I used that machine for 5 winters and then upgraded to the 900 ACE SWT. I honestly don’t think I’d ever be able to downgrade now. I think a WT would be more than sufficient in an area where there wasn’t much snow, but we have so much here and the temps never go below zero degrees and therefore it stays quite powdery. So we need a machine that will “float” better to keep from getting stuck.

    • @ChuckPorterEverythingOutdoors
      @ChuckPorterEverythingOutdoors  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ps. The VK 540’s were WT, not SWT

      Wow! I didn't expect such a quick response, especially while commenting on an older video. Thank you so much. I've been to NS & PEI, always wanted to visit NFL, but couldn't make it. Life & work got in the way. Seeing your videos, makes me sorry that I didn't. I own a 2017 Vk540, it's ok, the price was right, it floats in powder snow. Takes a football field to get it turned around...not ideal in heavy wooded areas. Sorry for another lengthy comment. Take good care.

    I can’t pick between the skandic 900 the tundra 600 or the voyager 550 opinions

    • @ChuckPorterEverythingOutdoors
      @ChuckPorterEverythingOutdoors  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Personally I would go with the Skandic 900 as I know it's capabilities. The tundra's are relable as well. I dont have much experience with the Voyager....maybe others could chime in here?Two main factors are what type of snow you get and and what you intend to do with the machine (haul heavy loads, trail vs off-trail, etc). Here in the North, we have 6 feet average of powdered snow and I haul a sled at least 50% of the time. Hence i went with the Skandic 900 as its a work horse, and with teh 24" track, it keeps me from getting stuck when off-trail. I'd definitelt go with a 4-stroke as they are so quiet, easy on gas, no fumes, and very relaible with less maintenace.

    • @ChuckPorterEverythingOutdoors
      @ChuckPorterEverythingOutdoors  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Roughly 15 mpg but highly depends on the load you’re hauling and the snow conditions. Some days with no sleigh and on groomed trail I get better. However hailing a sleigh full of firewood in powdered snow would be much less

      I’ve used many John, but this one came with the snowmobile. It is a Garmin Montana 680t. It certainly isn’t the newest/largest one on the market, but I find it very, very easy to use and I’ve followed it for thousands of kms now. Coupled with this is the nice mount that comes with it and it starts/stops in conjunction with the machine starting/stopping.

    Hello Chuck. I am seriously considering getting a Skandic. The local dealer has a 20 inch track with a 600 ace. I will use it for recreation plus hauling some wood up a moderate hill. I want to buy the right thing the first time. Would I be ok with just the 600 or would it be a big advantage to get the 900?

    • @ChuckPorterEverythingOutdoors
      @ChuckPorterEverythingOutdoors  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey Dean. I used a 24” SWT skandic with a 600 ACE in it for 5 winters and found it great. Although there were times when I wished I had more power, it always handled my towed loads. Our snow in Labrador is powdery for the most part and if we make a track beforehand, it usually hardens fairly quickly. Given those situations, I could haul any load of wood I wanted. Having said that, the 900 Ace bridges the gap I was looking for and now I really am left with no wants at all. Check out this video where you see us hauling wood with my old 600 Ace (yellow hood) and my newer 900 ace:

    Why was the hitch pin being installed upside down?

    • @ChuckPorterEverythingOutdoors
      @ChuckPorterEverythingOutdoors  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      John Leon you lose WAY less pins by putting it on in this manner. It’s a little hard to explain but with that style of hitch pin, sometimes the snow flap will “fold upward” and strike the pin (when going over bumps or deep snow mainly). If the flap strikes it the wrong way, it will in essence undo the pin by pushing it up through the hole and thereafter unhooking the spring latch. Conversely, if you put the pin bottom up, and the snow flap comes up and strikes it, it just pushes the pin up against the hitch plate-the spring latch is safely out of the way on top of the hitch altogether. (Hope this makes sense)

    • @johnleon9475
      @johnleon9475 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for the explanation. I came from the old school where you let gravity help bolts stay in. Seems to me there ought to be a way to " Houdini Proof " that hitch pin. Cheers, John
