Cammenga 3H Tritium Compass Review

  • The Cammenga 3H Tritium is an excellent lensatic compass. It has markings in radians and degrees, a sightwire, and a magnifier. It is beyond a doubt the best compass you can get.
    The dial has Tritium parts that allow the compass to glow in the dark without the need of light charging for over 10 years.
    See why this is one of the best compasses to have here: www.trekwarrior.com/best-comp...
    Manufacturer's website: cammenga.com/product/compasse...
    Correction note from Steve: The printed "date code" mentioned in the video is "13 10 77", which actually means "Year Month Lot". This example stands for "2013 October Lot 77". So while its not year 1977, it is year 2013.

    When the tritium no longer glows in the dark you can send it back to cammenga and they will completely change out all the tritium for fresher newer set
    P.s. I work at cammenga I’m the ones who installs the bezel and works on the alignment

      Hey there! Do you know if the ones on the market are different from the usgi ones? I bought one and the thumb loop was super loose and I remember it being quite sturdy. I know Bass Pro or Cabela’s also sells them but I want to make sure I’m buying what I used to use. Let me know! Thanks

    It should be noted that the 10-12 year half life means that after 10-12 years it will be half as bright as it was when new. It doesn’t mean it will go out like a light bulb or stop glowing altogether

    The dial is more that just locked in place; it is lifted off the needle as well. And, the model IS the same as the military NSN stock numbered item; the last number pair (77) is the lot number, showing the compass was surplus or outside of the military contract. You won't find any difference between your compass and the military issued ones of the same year (Oct 2013), right down to the peculiar end knot on the nylon cord. No oil inside, the needle dampening is "induction dampening." A magnet turning inside a copper coil or enclosure produces a current in the coil --- the generator principle, but at cost; the coil or enclosure puts a drag on the moving magnet. Hence the white part is actually a coated copper "cup" which reacts with the magnetic needle to settle it quickly.

    Looks to be identical to the one I used in the Army. I can’t see any differences. Awesome review though man! I highly recommend the Cammenga 3H to anyone unsure about it. Get one. Youll never buy another compass. 🤘🏻🇺🇸🦅

    Hi, thank you very much for the video, yesterday I ordered a Commenga H3 and I'm waiting anxiously to get home.
    The ring according to what I saw on the web is aluminum but by the type of epoxy paint feels like plastic, but it is made of aluminum.

    What's the story if I live in the southern hemisphere (Australia)? Is this compass only suitable for the northern hemisphere?

    • @francissobotka8725
      @francissobotka8725 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The compass only works in the USA and its territories ....I hope you sense the sarcasm ...It works everywhere ..It would work on another planet as well ,Not sure about the moon though .

    • @ngiorgos
      @ngiorgos 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      In their website, Cammenga offers the option for a south hemesphere balanced version of their compasses

    • @ngiorgos
      @ngiorgos 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@francissobotka8725 their question is actually legitimate. The magnetic field of the Earth is not pointing solely horizontaly.
      In the north hemjsphere, magneric north points sligtly down and in the southern hemisphere, it points slightly up.
      So compass manufacturers and users need to take that into account or the needle might be off-balanced and tilt excessively

    Served US. Army 1993-2013….20years. Two combat deployments to Iraq 2004-2005 and 2008-2009. I trust my life to no other compass but this one. I’ve used Suunto, Brunton and generic others. None hold a candle to this compass. Bought my own 3H a few years back I use for hiking and camping. It’s become a family heirloom.

    To demo. the tritium illumination, why didn't you turn the light off to get the full effect.
    You didn't have a dot-point list for the presentation.

    Actually the tritium doesn't glow, the beta particles strike phosphorus causing the glow.

      Yeah, tritium costs $30k a gram, so if you see any compass selling for less than $75-100, it's not tritium.

      @CristiNeagu 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@caseykelso1 It isn't. You're supposed to keep the lid open at a 90 degree angle, put the lens to your eye, and then you can look through the notch on top of the lens and use the wire in the lid to sight a target (the notch allows you to have both the wire and the background in focus at the same time). You then look down through the lens at the compass face to read the azimuth.

    • @caseykelso1

      @@CristiNeagu both work , I guess its just a coincidence that the tabs fits perfectly into the top of the compass. And works mint. That's the way we were taught I guess everybody has different ways of teaching how to use a compass. 🍻 cheers
