  • This video covers the basics of how to use a lensatic compass for beginners. Knowing how to use a compass is a skill I think every adult should know. And the Cammenga 3H tritium compass is an excellent land navigation tool trusted by the US military for years. Thanks to Optics Planet for providing the compass for this demonstration.

    Nice. Technic tip: you can hold your eye to the little magnifying glass, and see your bearing and see the wire (direction) at the same time. You don't need to lift your eye to see the wire.
    Slide the lensatic eye piece into the cover that has the grove to match the lensatic grove. They should be touching.

    Great lesson but you alway have to remember to adjust for your Grid Magnetic Angle which moves slightly every year. It only works out to a few Mils but when walking on a bearing for a long distances, it can make a big difference to where you end up. 👍

      It depends on where you are, where I am in the Eastern US, it’s 12 degrees, much more than a few mils. There are places out west that are much more than that, just easterly rather than westerly.

    I agree with the commenter below, finally a video on compass reading that I can understand... fire the most part. There are lots of things that others don't seem to cover. For example, why would you need to set a bearing? The reason is because on a map there might be obstacles between you and your objective. I'm using a cheaper compass (Brunton), my compass face has two lines... (What is the second line for?) What happens if you get off your bearing as you travel at night? My guess is that you would have to re-identify your location if you got far enough off track.

    As a vet, I was in Field Artillery. In F.A we use mil-radians instead of degree's. 1°= 17.78 mil. 6283 mil in 360°, which when firing a explosive 20 miles or so, the mil factor is absolutely necessary. That's probably the biggest difference between civilian and military compasses. I don't believe some needs such equipment for Hunting or hiking. The military compasses are quite expensive because of the ability to break 360° into mils. Good day too you, thank you for the info. More people need to know map and compass navigation.

    You can do a three legged, or triangular, compass walk. Pick a bearing and count your paces. One count for every time right foot (or left) hits ground. Stop and turn the bezel 40 clicks to the left. Walk the same number of paces. Stop and once again, 40 clicks towards the left. You'll wind up at your starting point, or at least very close. You'll walk an equalateral triangle. Each detent on the bezel is 3 degrees. 40 X 3 = 120 which is each angle of an equalateral triangle. You can turn it either way initially. Your direction of travel will be opposite from the direction you turn the bezel. If you turn it toward the right...it'll send you to the left on that leg. Just be consistent in whichever way you rotate the bezel. Check out "Ranger beads" which help keep track of paces. Also, learn what your personal pace count is per 100 meters. Average is about 65. So every time you count to 65 (or whatever) pull down a bead. Great confidence excersise. Try for one kilometer per leg of the triangle. Know beforehand what direction it is to get back just in case.

    Ok, NOW i understand it. One thing, what you said at the end is a point worth emphasizing, that when you line up the North needle with the yellow bearing marker, you have to keep it there as you walk. If you dont, you wont stay on the bearing and will wind up in timbuktu. Its critical because if you lose sight of some distant target you made at the beginning, like some big rock or something, how would you know you are staying on course towards it?

    Good video on this often misunderstood compass. I’ve always been drawn to the lensatic style compass and owned one like you used in the video.
    However, I began noticing that former military (like you, I am not) had some not so complimentary comments about this style. In fact, the hosts of 2 of my favorite TH-cam channels Corporal’s Corner and Gray Bearded Green Beret (both former military) seem to recommend the Suunto compass you also displayed.
    It would be interesting to see a comparison of the features of both compasses to help guide us in the best direction.

    If you're looking for a US lensatic compass on the cheap try keeping tabs on your local auctions. Especially if they post pictures before hand that you can look through like on facebook or something. I nabbed a 2005 Cammenga tritium compass for $25 and a slightly older Stocker and Yale compass (same compass just made before Cammenga was founded in '92) for $20. Tritium glow on the Cammenga is a little weak now that its 15 years old but for 25 bones it was a steal all the same. Just a tip for ya'll not wanting to spend $80 on a new Cammenga.

    Hi. Do you happen to have a compass (Lensatic) video that doesn't use maps? For instance, if you go on a hike that uses trails but then you find yourself lost due to multiple trailheads and you took one too many. So then you have to get back to your parked car. Or, you are on a drive and have taken multiple small country roads and now find yourself lost. In both cases, no maps seemed necessary at the time.
    Thanks,
    Eric

      I have an older series about several compass topics that you may find helpful. But, if you haven’t kept up with which way you went or have at least a reasonable knowledge of the surrounding geography (some sort of “map in your head”, then I’m not sure a compass is gonna be much help.

      Check out this playlist: th-cam.com/play/PLlvBLL5-fJbjKV34J5pvApsrMrrpJhRzE.html I made those videos a while back. The first one about getting free maps is pretty outdated because the USGS website has changed, but the rest are valid. Honestly, if I need a map I buy it from MyTopo.com. You can create custom centered maps in a variety of scales and get them on water-resistant, tear-resistant paper for about $16 or so.

    Still confused. You oriented your map to magnetic north; you found your direction of travel based on the magnetic north orientation. When did you account for deviation?

    • @SurvivalOnPurpose
      @SurvivalOnPurpose  ปีที่แล้ว

      If you are just planning a route using the map, and the map is oriented toward magnetic north and the compass has not been adjusted for declination (which means the needle points to magnetic north) then there is really no need to account for deviation because your map and compass are speaking the same language.

    If lost in wilderness in Southern Hemisphere do we always travel “North” or “NW” direction? or do we travel “South” Plz help.

    • @SurvivalOnPurpose
      @SurvivalOnPurpose  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That would depend on which direction you need to go. There is no "always travel" direction in either hemisphere.

    I have a lensatic compass and when I hold the compass up horizontally and square the sight slot appears to be out of line with the sight wire. Is this an issue as my other compass appears to line up on the wire better. This is a National Geographic Lensatic compass and the one that lines up better is called Engineer

    Great video on Lensatic Compass use and thank you!! How do you feel about using it in conjunction with a GPS? Transferring GPS magnetic bearings to the Lensatic Compass for navigation? The GPS works great with a baseplate style compass!

I have three of them and they can literally get you lost in Walmart And how do i take a reading from the start of my hiking trip to get back to my car

    What’s the best way to store this compass? I know your not suppose to store it near metals but I was wondering if you could carry it in an EDC but would still it be effected by metals (cars etc) you face everyday even when the magnifier locks the compass?

    • @SurvivalOnPurpose
      @SurvivalOnPurpose  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don’t think storing it around metal hurts it. Just make sure it is not too close to metal while you are using it.

      Archer 001: You can get compasses which only work correctly in the Northern hemisphere OR the Southern hemisphere.....it sounds like you're using a Northern hemisphere one in the Southern hemisphere (hence the back-to-front readings.....your North needle will point South & Vice versa). You can also get a "Global" compass which will work anywhere in the world.

    I would love to have a Cammenga compass. It's a little out of my price range. With that said . What do you think of the Eyeskey millitary style compass? From the reviews I have read they seem to be fairly accurate.
    I'm thinking of getting one till I get the money for a good Cammenga .

    • @SurvivalOnPurpose
      @SurvivalOnPurpose  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have no experience with them. I will say that I need a compass to be more than "fairly accurate". For the same money you can get a Suunto MCB amzn.to/3eqai7M and for about $47 you can get the MC-2, which is an excellent compass amzn.to/2NeBcTY

    7:58 So basically, you WON'T be looking down like that. You will put that lense much closer to your eye such that when you look through the lense you can see the compass dial, and when you look up _through the gap at the top of the lense_ you can see the wire. It is very important to look at the sighting wire through the gap because that allows you to have both the wire and the objects in the background in focus at the same time.

    • @SurvivalOnPurpose
      @SurvivalOnPurpose  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can do it either way. The "eye up close" method is more accurate.
