    The image of Luthor riding piggyback on Dr. Octopus was so memorable that it got worked into, of all things, Avengers Forever in a sequence about alternate universes. That's a book that doesn't even feature Spider-Man but Kurt Busiek couldn't resist having Carlos Pacheco draw them in.

    17:00 I kind of imagined them meeting in jail like this:
    Dr. Octopus: So what they get you for?
    Lex Luther: Giant robot, try to steal something, foiled by superhero.
    Dr. Octopus: *scoffs* Same.
    Lex: Superheroes am I right?!
    Doc Oc: Tell me about it.

    • @BlackINKim

      Yes, as a matter of fact, in 1976, Gerry Conway was heard having this conversation with Dc's and Marvel's editors.
      "Listen, I know the segmentwith the African tribes doesn't relly contribute to anything, but hear me out: imagine, for a second, in less than a couple of decades, computers all being linked together in a sort of interconected system that spans around multiple countries, a "World Wide Web", if you will.
      If such a thing happened, I'm sure that this joke about Superman being culturally insensitive will be the thing we need to secure this books success as a classic!
      Also, do you think you can reconsider your decision about cutting the two dick jokes during Sup and Spidey's fight? I really think it adds something to the overarching plot!"

      Because DC and Marvel have what’s called a sliding timescale basically it DC and Marvel just refused to let their characters age past 20 or 30. This is the reason why Spider-Man and Robin the first one remain teenagers for so long and only recently allowed them to become adults as they did not want to age up their characters so much in the fear of having them be retired, so anytime DC and Marvel a redo characters origins but several characters from the 1940s such as for DC the justice Society of America and for Marvel the invaders are from the 1940s so when the question is asked of when did Batman and Superman debut and when did the marvel age began depends on the time the origins are being retold in marvel is said that 20 or 15 years have passed since the marvel age began as for DC. It’s been 20 or 30 years. The problem is when you have 60+ years of history it cause problems for marvel since it never had a reboot, a successful one you have to make recon certain things like for example read reacher and Ben Grimm fought in World War II in older tales well characters like Wolverine can get away with this well upper characters cannot so they have to make up new wars like with Iron Man who has to push it to whatever war is happening at the time this is most the reason why comics of the big two is hard to get into you have so much history and backed in the Internet did not exist

      @LaurianeG. 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@JinxProductions Well while I think for what it is it has better execution, a few things to remember. First, it's basically an extended episode, and as such it's animation quality is that of cartoons of the time (not they are much better now but still), but what suffer the most is the directing. It's.... kind of basic. The same goes with the writing. It's tight, but it lacks ambition. It's just "two popular superheroes fighting a villain", it lacks any sense of themes and ideas. Now, don't get me wrong: I think Batman V Superman UTTERLY FAILS at executing it's ambition, and despite some impressive shots, the directing also suffer from a lot of issues. I'm not trying to say it's any "good", nor that the TV special was bad, I'm just saying that comparing the two seems....... Out of place. They clearly do not have the same ambitions, and the most we can say is that one fails while the other succeeds.

And I gotta say, I did love this crossover in spite of its flaws like having the Marvel characters a bit sidelined on both the hero and villain front. Which does make me sad they don't do these anymore. Heck, I would pay for a "World's finest" style miniseries where you have Spidey and Supes instead of Bats and Sups, with each complimenting each other.
    On a second note, spider web is stronger than steel, and I am inclined to believe Peter's is at leas as strong if not stronger than natural spider web so... superman basically made peter webbing's worse. Man, Silver Age supes really was a Nightwing, if you catch my drift.

    Well, if they just shot Superman with the red sun radiation... yeah, that'd temporarily depower him, but then there wouldn't be someone distracting Spider-Man. Making Spidey able to match blows with Supes for a while keeps them both busy with each other and thus out of the villains' hair. And there's the added bonus of the fight potentially damaging the heroes' cred.

    • @GeneralKenobi75
      @GeneralKenobi75 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Except that there's no need to distract Spidey because they're both hidden and Spidey has mad on for Superman. My biggest question is, if Luthor has so much red sun radiation at his disposal, why is Superman still such a problem?

    • @ZeldaTheSwordsman
      @ZeldaTheSwordsman 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      GeneralKenobi75
      "They're both hidden" doesn't mean that Spidey wouldn't try to FIND them, idiot. They obviously wanted to both distract and bait Spidey because, if you'll recall, the *reason* Spidey has a mad-on for Superman is because of Luthor-disguised-as-Supes seemingly vaporizing Mary Jane!!!

    I agree with you, Linkara. I hate it when superheroes spend the whole time fighting each other rather than the villains. Particularly Batman and Superman fighting because they have "different ideologues" when that is strait crap. They have different (methods), yes but they have the exact same ideology. A symbol to strike fear in to the wicked and inspire hope in the good and innocent. Just because they go about it in different ways, Bats though the shadows and Supes in the light if day, doesn't mean that their end goals are any different and I am sick of bad writers and dumbass fanboys thinking that it does.

    • @alucardyoici
      @alucardyoici 8 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I don't think Superman aims at striking fear, most of the time he gives speech about the villains being better than they are and rethink their life while Batman simply break bones, and knowing that a guy dressed as a bat punch criminals at night isn't really inspiring hope.
      They might respect each other but with all the kryptonite traps and superbots army in the fortress of solitude they will have conflict between the two

    • @Zxzero36
      @Zxzero36 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +alucardyoici Well superman does strike fear because he's unstoppable.
      Batman can't engage people with guns as easily as supes can so he has to knock them out and that means breaking bones in the process in some cases

    • @Zxzero36
      @Zxzero36 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +alucardyoici That and Gotham is different that Metropolis. Gotham is that bad part of the neighborhood you have to stay out. So batman helps by being ruthless.
      If anything I like that phrase from the Noland movies. Batman is the hero that Gotham needs as it needs someone to clean up crim ans act better than the police bit it's not the one it deserves as batman's methods can be a bit harsh

    • @alucardyoici
      @alucardyoici 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Zxzero36 yes Batman needing to break bones because he is weak kind of stopped making sense when he made a battle armor that can spar with superman. And if if being unstoppable was all it took to strike fear every heroes including batman would scare criminals after the third time they beat darkseid

    • @Zxzero36
      @Zxzero36 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      ***** Oh yeah cause batman is impervious to bullets and can just whisk the villains away with out harm can he? Its allways better to make sure your opponents cant fight back.
      Thats why beanbag guns are used sometimes they also can break bones mostly ribs. Tear gas is horrible but it gets the job done with out loss of life.
      Power armor is bulky and is an easy target. Batman works in the shadows.Remember the hell-bat armor can kill him which is why he doesn't use it.
      Not everyone in comics is smart you know

    Jimmy Olsen in 1976 was a junior reporter, he wasn't a photographer, and had been since 1940. This is probably due to one thing, Superman: the Movie! Jimmy Olsen was introduced to a very large non comic reading audience and his career was staff photographer. One would think that this change would influence the comics somehow, being that it seems to be the thing, to do these days to make the comics more movie like, with the comics these days constantly revamping the looks and attitudes to better match their on screen counterparts. This didn't happen here, from 1978 and on, Jimmy was a reporter for the Galaxy network and while occasionally grabbing a camera and snapping photos, it would take 15 or so years and one comic reboot for this to become his most remembered and closely associated career. It wasn't until 1991, when Jimmy fired from the Daily Planet due to budget cuts, and living out of his car, found a camera, and took pictures of a battle occurring, that Jimmy found his calling, a photographer.

    Here's a tiny side-note regarding this Comics title in other countrys: They actually renamed Spider-Man in Germany for this comic. Yes. Just for this one comic he got renamed. Just look up "Super-Man VS Super-Spider". Again, yes, I'm not kidding. Sadly there are no official informations why this change was made, but if I would have to guess I think that the German editorial maybe had a similiar problem with Spideys adjectives and then decided to even it out in some way.
    Still very weird, esspecially when you consider that Spideys name was already changed up to beginn with in Germany. Nearly ever published Marvel Hero got a translated name for the German speaking market.
    For example, Spider-Man was changed to "Die Spinne" (Which translates back just to "The Spider") and Iron-man was known as "Der Eiserne" ("The Iron-One") until the mid-90s.

      I could picture the crossover starting off on a very bad start. Superman friends & Goku's friends are scattered across a battlefield. Some are dying or severely injured, Superman & Goku are fighting a new villain. Who is this villain? I can't think of a name, but the new villain is more than a match for Superman & Goku. Goku & Superman look at each other & (without uttering a word) wonder if this will be the one fight they wont win. After a series of events, Superman & Goku triumph. With senzu beans & Dende's help, everybody is healed.
      Goku: Before me & my friends return home, I would like to say that its been an honor to fight along side you.
      Superman: Likewise.
      Goku: Though we come from different worlds, let us part as brothers.
      Superman: I agree.
      Superman & Goku shake hands & the credits roll.

    Maybe it's my Marvel - bias talking, but I feel that the story isn't very good once you get past the novelty of Superman and Spider-Man meeting. After his fight with Superman, you could digitally erase Spidey from every panel and the story would be more or less the same. All the obstacles and problems the duo faces are solved by Superman, while Spidey just stands there and drools over how awesome Superman is. The scene with the computer even completely ignores both spider-sense and the fact that Spidey is super-genius. What is even the point of making the story a crossover, if one of the heroes is going to be completely useless?
    Also, a fun fact. In the Finnish translation of this comic, Clark Kent's workplace was changed to Daily Planet and his boss to Perry White.

    You know I just realized something about the DC and Marvel Universes. In the DC universe every superhero (or at least every big named superhero) has their own city where they fight crime in. Batman Gotham, The Flash Central City, Superman Metropolis. And another thing about they have in common is that, with the exception of Metropolis, their all fictional. Compare that to the Marvel Universe where all the big shot superheroes are all station in New York City. Fantastic Four, Avengers, Spider-Man. And to top it all off I don't think New York City is ever mention in the DC Universe. At least from the comics I've read.

    What's your beef with JLA/Avengers?
    *SPOILERS FOR THOSE THAT DID NOT READ IT!*
    I thought it was pretty good, the heroes acting irrationally made sense given the device centered around their confrontations was based on their ability to take the most powerful macguffins of the opposing universe, so everyone being more on edge and quick to act made sense, not to mention that not all the heroes were going for each other's throats, Batman and Cap knew something was wrong, and even teamed up. And the big team up battle on the Galactus fortress with all past incarnations and members of the respective teams was awesome, Thor and Superman tag teaming, Wonder Woman having the chance to battle alongside her mother against Surtur, Supes weidling Cap's Shield and Mjolnir to break down Kronas' fortress. I know with how much you hate Cry for Justice, you would get a kick out of Cap pummeling Prometheus like nobody's business. Hell, the opposing philosophies that drive the Avengers and the Justice League almost literally go head-to-head. With Supes seeing the Avengers as ineffectual and almost neglectful (the Avengers trying not to meddle with the lives of citizens) while Cap sees the Justice League as just another Squadron Supreme (with how much more involved the JL is in their world), ready to take over another Earth. It was actually the book that got me into reading comics.

      Well, they DID have George Perez in charge of art. I’m also willing to let JLA/Avengers get away with that since it’s the last crossover Marvel and DC have had and it’s almost 20 years old

    My library had this when I was a kid. I recall enjoying it back then.
    Another crossover I recall was good was a Captain America/The Bat-Man crossover from about 20 years ago. The Joker and Red Skull are after the Gotham Project, and Captain America needs the help of Gotham's resident vigilante to save the Allied War Effort.

      I generally do like Simonsen's work. It isn't the *best* I've seen, but it is a good constant quality. I'd say George Perez really sets the bar (Crisis on Infinite Earths).

    “Team-up” is written on the cover before “vs“ is. They didn’t keep pretenses for long, lol.

    I misunderstood Normandy Invasion as Norman Invasion and thought you were talking about the battle of Hastings rather than D-Day. Was thinking "how's an event from almost a thousand years ago getting snubbed for battle of the century?"

    I own that Superman Fantastic Four issue. I didn't know it was call treasury format and never saw of issues like it. I learned something today.

      Cheshire Kat Spider-man is basically a Green Lantern but with webbing instead of light constructs.

    In the DC Versus Marvel/Marvel Versus DC crossover from the 90s they explain that the DC & Marvel universes occasionally merge slightly, explaining away these kinds of crossovers while the ones where they cross dimensions is a different backstory. I wonder who owns Access now?

    The buildings being empty reminded me of that one DBZ dub.
