I do have a couple of videos about both of those things, each deesser is a little bit different not sure if my video would be helpful because I don't know which one you're running but I think I do have a couple on how to set those up and one that doesn't comparison on different DS plugins. I do have some videos that include some noise gate setups I mean noise gates really just a cut out the background noise when you stop talking, some of them will even cut out your breathing sounds sometimes if you get a good one but I have a couple of playlists on my channel, I think I have a playlist for all the plug-in videos so you might want to look through that and see if there's anything interesting in that playlist
Thanks I'm glad you enjoyed it, I remember when I first got this compressor I was like oh wow, this has things I've never seen before and then I quickly realize hey I don't need most of these things LOL just set it up like I normally do on other compressors and band sounds pretty good camera but it's got all the crazy features if you need it,
Very nice settings for VO, I couldn't find anything on YT with fabfilter related to VO, mostly music. I moved from very basic audacity and compressor had something like a "make-up gain for 0db after compressing". but I have huge issues figuring out how to set something similar in fabfilter bundle, I tried limiter but it's either too loud or too quiet.
I'm glad that settings are helpful, limiters are great but that's usually the last thing you run, what I do is I set the limiter at like -1 or maybe minus 0.5 decibels, if it the signal goes above zero normally it clips and distorts. So after the compressor I run the limiter send it to like -0.5 And then I use the gain setting on the limiter to turn up the volume to where it's just barely barely barely hitting that 0.5 on the very loudest part, so the compressor keeps everything at a pretty similar volume and then the limiter allows you to get the audio signal as loud as possible without clipping into distorting.. But there's really not a whole lot as far as voiceover on this compressor, This one has some crazy controls and features like I've never seen before on a compressor so this one can be super confusing but It's probably the best compressor on the market then you can get a nice amount of compression will still making the audio sound transparent and like a natural voice. Some compressors can really color the way things sound especially if you over-compress a little bit but I really like this Fab filter a lot, it was a little expensive but I got mine on Black Friday along with the EQ and man It was a heck of a deal and I'm glad I ended up buying them cuz these audio plugins by FabFilter really some nice cam I wish I could afford to buy some more lol I just have the two from them but man if they weren't so expensive I would probably have them all lol
@@dannylightning-audio-reviews For the last 6 months I have been doing complete miracles in my eyes in terms of using eq3. Amazing tools, visuals and dynamic bands saved many of my recordings. This and de-esser is powerful. I still haven't learned what the heck can I do to have similar levels of sound with compressor, in other compressors ratio 3:1 always gives me nice round sound but with this one I still cannot understand how to make it even and normalize to decent level. I found dbx 160 plugin from waves to be nice for VO.
These settings will work great and keep your voice sounding pretty natural, if you want a light natural sounding compression you could probably go up to a 4 to 1 ratio and make the attack little faster and the release a little longer and that may give you more of a podcasty type of sound. And then you can always play with the settings of the drop-down menu where there's opto, classic, clean and vocal, if you choose optto that'll give you some nice results for a podcast type of sound and then you can always play with the attack and the release a little bit but this will give you a very good starting point and then you can play with those other settings I mentioned. Now most plugins have really terrible presets but fan filter did a great job on their preset so if you go into the vocal preset you're going to see one that says pro voiceover or maybe it says Pro VO or something along the lines of that and that sets the compressor up in a really weird way but that's also a fun preset to play with it gives you a great start for an overall natural sound and then you can play around with it from there. not too long ago I actually went into the presets just to see what they had and I was like hey they have a voice-over preset and I tried it and I was like oh my God it doesn't suck, I don't think I've ever had a plug-in with a good preset until I tried some of Fab filters presets. Get some ridiculous thing that's not usable like presets on other plugins Now if you happen to have the universal audio LA2A compressor that gives you a nice amount monex that almost gives you a tube sound, and if you happen to have the waves Renaissance vox (R Vox) compressor that's a pretty interesting compressor that sounds great for podcasting and gives you a very lightly saturated sound. Those are both as simple as it gets when it comes to compression, you don't have very many controls to worry about and they just sound good, The fan filter is amazing but my God it has a lot going on lol
For singing what I would do is set it up like I show in this video and then play the track with the music at that point you're going to take the attack and add more or less until it sounds like the vocals are sitting where you want, a faster attack will probably make the vocal sound like they're out in front of the music a little bit slower might make it sound like it's sitting on top of the music and even slower than that may make it sound like the locals are back behind the music so adjust the attack until you get it setting either in front or right on top and then what I would do at that point once you got that dialed in, is adjust the threshold until it still starts to sound a little bit too squashed and unnatural and then back it off just a little bit. Of course the more you compress by adjusting the threshold your mix is probably going to get quieter so at that point you might want to turn on the Auto game which should make it louder for you as the compression reduces the volume, hopefully that makes sense. Once you have that set up if the vocal sound like the grabbing a little too hard or pumping a little bit too much that's when you play with the release, generally for music the release would be somewhere between 60 and 200 milliseconds, I would probably start with it at 60, do all the other stuff I mentioned, and then if it doesn't sound quite right then play with the release a little bit..
really good, thank you. now i want to know if you have some similar videos about the de-ess'er and noise gate

Would these settings be okay for podcasting and talking head videos?

Video for setting if rapping or singing
